It had a mild hotness, when I make it at home, that is not there is the off-the-shelf Japanese curry spice. I did not try, but a popular item, especially in Summer is Japanese shave ice dessert. Seating is small inside, there are several cafe tables on the sidewalk, and the food can be take out, though doubt the shave ice will travel far. Came here with a couple of friends for lunch. None of us had been here before. For some reason,…read morewhen I think of Thai food and noodles, I think of Pad Thai. To my surprise, they do not have that here. I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't order my usual go to dish. What do you mean I actually need to look at the menu and pick something new? The menu was simple: decide between a rice dish or a soup-based dish. If you choose a soup-based dish, remember to pick your noodle type, or the default will be the "See Mee" (very thin rice vermicelli noodles). After a long debate, we picked the recommended dishes: 21) Guay Tiew Ruea ($16) and 12) Braised Pork and Rice ($15). To my surprise, both dishes had wonderful flavors, and the ingredients complemented each other well. My Braised Pork and Rice was wonderful. The pork was delicious, tender, and melted in your mouth without being too dry. The sauce mixed into the rice was super yummy, but lesson learned: MIX before you EAT! Otherwise, the sauce settles at the bottom and half of the rice misses out on the flavor. I also absolutely loved the ginger and pickled mustard greens in my dish, which were not mentioned on the menu. It was a lovely surprise because they paired very well with the dish. I would also like to mention that the food here is not greasy or oily either. I approve. They have a paper menu for you to look at, but you place your order through the table's QR code. Payment is through the QR code as well. Ice water is self-serve at the water station, along with to go containers when you're done. They will bring your food to the table and buss it when you're finished eating. Service and interaction with the staff are very minimal. Street parking is available. You'll need to pay at the meters or through Parking Kitty. Food came out pretty fast. One hour of parking is a little tight but doable. If you want to hang out with friends and enjoy a relaxing meal, I'd recommend planning for about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes of parking. I will return to try some of their other dishes soon!

Guay Tiew is a newer Thai noodle shop with a lot of good press in recent weeks. It was intriguing…read moreenough that we decided to visit for lunch on a Sunday while we were down in Portland. Walking in a couple of minutes after they opened, we were the 3rd party to be seated. We found the the interior to nicely designed with a kitchen that actually does look like a hawker stall. They expect orders via QR code at each table, but they don't have wifi. Also, when we visited, I think the servers didn't have the table numbers memorized yet - there were multiple mishaps delivering food and drinks to the incorrect tables. One last comment before delving into the food - Guay Tiew gives really high quality disposable chopsticks. They might actually be reusable. 27. HOUSE CURRY, Egg Noodles ($17) - The star of this dish has to be the broth. In this case, rich and heavenly with a strong curry paste base mixed with a umamiful porky flavor. It has a slight spice component, barely noticeable as a small amount of warmth, but then descends into a somewhat overwhelming sweetness. It's so, so sweet, very similar to generic Khao Soi broths that can be found all over in American Thai restaurants. I have a feeling that most places use the exact same ratios of coconut milk, curry paste, and sugar, because at this point, the taste feels so generic. I've never visited Thailand before, but I can't imagine this dish is this sweet in Thailand. Just as a comparison point, I find Malaysian laksa in the US to be way sweeter than in Malaysia. In this dish, the only hint of acidity is from some pickled mustard greens, but there's such a small amount it basically does nothing. There are also some raw bean sprouts, fried garlic soaking in the rich broth, and yu choy, still very vegetal and crunchy from being only briefly blanched before adding to the broth. Otherwise the dish comes with a virtual cornucopia of meats, which differentiates Guay Tiew from other American Thai noodle shops. There are a couple of spirals of crispy pork cracklins, then another couple of short julienned-like pieces as well. There's the expertly braised pork, so tender it almost falls apart by itself. There are pork "meatballs" - basically tender and slightly bouncy pork cubes, almost resembling a Vietnamese cha lua ham, but a bit less bouncy and without the fish sauce umami. There's finally a slice of minced pork, mixed with rice vermicelli, a bit softer than spam in texture, with plenty of porky umami. The egg noodles are recommended and go perfectly with the dish. They are thin and curly, probably only 1mm in width, giving plenty of eggy bounce to the dish. (4/5) 21. GUAY TIEW RUEA, Thin Noodles ($16) - I have not eaten Boat Noodles before in the past. After getting this dish, I think I know why. Guay Tiew's menu states the broth is a "rich, spicy herbal brown broth." Upon getting to the table, I could smell a somewhat funky, yet umamiful dish. The broth is dark brown, the color of rich soil. My first thought was tamarind paste given the color and propensity of this ingredient in Thai dishes. Then the taste - oh yeah, this is pig blood. I've eaten my share of pig blood, mostly due to being polite at Dim Sum places, and I can emphatically say that I don't like the substance. And that's probably why I've never ordered Boat Noodles before - my guess is other restaurants actually describe the dish as using a pork blood base. Anyways, given my dislike, I can't actually properly rate the dish. The broth is spicy, salty, tangy, sweet and full of umami. It's smoky, it's porky, it's mineral forward, rich with an undercurrent of medicinal herbs, but that blood taste really gets to me! In this dish, the minced pork patty actually soaks up a lot of the herbal and blood flavor. Otherwise, it comes with pretty much the same toppings as the house curry other than the pickled mustard greens. We ordered this with the thin noodles, which surprisingly came cut up into small segments. It makes the noodles easy to eat with a spoon, I suppose, similar to Katong Laksa. It's always nice seeing a place open up that tries to specialize in a small number of dishes rather than offering up a huge menu as most American Thai restaurants do. It helps give Guay Tiew a distinguishing factor that separates it out from the competition. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms.

They had just the right amount of spice with tons of flavor. Service was quick, no line and you order up the counter and they will bring your food out. They offer indoor seating and outdoor seating. I also got a palm soda, which was refreshing, while my friend had an iced Burmese tea, which she described as a mix of milk tea and thai tea. It had a nice fragrance & wasn't overly sweet. The main downside is we opted to sit outdoors and got a few bug bites, so that is something to keep in mind (depending on the time of the day or season). Portions were good and we had trouble finishing our dishes. Pricing for our food and drinks seemed reasonable.
