I'm really surprised by the reviews that rated this place poorly. But reading their complaints, I think it's a them problem, not a Zacatlan problem. Service was impeccable. Welcoming, warm, attentive. I was given the choice of sitting in the main dining room or on the covered porch (fully covered) and I chose the porch. They opened the window for me so there would be a light breeze. Anyone who complains about this beautiful, light-filled porch, again, it's a them problem, not a Zacatlan problem. Menu items for breakfast/brunch include: buttermilk pancakes, Atlantic salmon, Mary Tierra Benedicts (crab meat, Canadian bacon, bennies, and more), burritos, omelets, chicken and waffles, avocado toast. At the servers recommendation, I had the sopecitos, which are corn cakes served with chicken Tinga (chicken, obvi), cochinita pibil (pork), rajas (roasted poblano strips) with lettuce, crema, and queso fresco. It was savory and authentic. Very rich and well seasoned. The veggies served along with it were also great. Their margaritas are on point. Options for dinner: bone marrow, various salads, achiote prawns, branzino fish al pastor, lamb shank barbabcoa, vegetarian Chile relleno, fried snapper, pork shank, 16 hour braised short ribs, and more. I would love to try this place for dinner. I vacationed in Santa Fe solo. I think I'll bring my husband back here for a laid back few days. read more

I expected a much better meal and service that what we got at Zacatlán after reading the Yelp reviews. We oddly were seated in an empty second dining area when there were ample seats in the main dining room. The presentation of the food was a bit over the top. Happy Cinco De Mayo! We were the first ones there this evening and arrived 20 minutes before our reservation. We were seated right away and ordered cocktails. She had the Cadillac Margarita and I ordered the Hibiscus Margarita. Both were very good. We ordered the yellowtail ceviche with the blue corn tortilla chips. The presentation and portion was impressive. This was put together very well and the freshness of all the combined ingredients were spot on. What a great start. We ordered our entrees and inquired about the wine by the glass selections. Unfortunately, this is where things started to go South. Our nice young server (first night serving) didn't know anything about the wines. They had wines from various regions that we were unfamiliar with the names and profiles. My wife chose a Malbec from Argentina which we are somewhat familiar with and I rolled the dice and selected a Sauvignon Blanc from Baja California. We asked for a sample taste of each and our server left and didn't come back until 5 minutes after our entrees were served. Fortunately both wines were good so they came back soon after with full glasses. My wife ordered the elk chops with crimini mushrooms and bacon on top of a black garlic mash potato. The presentation was beautiful. Her first bite and instantly her face looked like she was about to hurl. Apparently the first bite was grissle. She reluctantly pushed on and was careful on the next bites and said the elk was chewy. This is not how elk should be. I cook game proteins often. Elk should not be chewy. I checked it out and saw one chop was a little overcooked (medium) and the other chop was cooked proper with a hard sear and medium rare. She did say the few mushrooms and bacon she had were good. LOL! I had the whole fried red snapper with crab risotto and broccolini. This was impressive looking when it arrived and the fish was fried perfect. Unfortunately the risotto under the fish was al dente, pasty, and a little dry.. The cook did not use enough broth to cook the rice through gradually and reduced down and repeat with the broth like a good creamy risotto should be cooked. My wife hardly ate her meal and was still hungry and ordered their churros. You can't go wrong with homemade churros. When they arrived, it looked promising, but that first bite was very sweet and the exterior was over fried and the interior was doughy and not a good texture. If I had to guess, the oil was too hot when they fried them. What a bummer. Everything seemed disjointed and not executed correctly after the cocktails and appetizer. Perhaps it was an off night because there are a lot of good reviews. I wish we could have gave a good review because everything was presented so nice. read more

Some friends recommended Zacatlan, so we decided to try it for dinner. My wife and I shared the rice paper Ceeasar salad, then she ordered the lamb shank barbacoa, and I had the duck legs confit. Both dishes were excellent, with lots of flavor, although each was slightly overcooked. As you can see from the photos, the portions are large. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. We will definitely dine here again during our next trip to Santa Fe. read more

Rating 3.5, putting 3 since Yelp wont allow me to do half stars. We were staying in Santa Fe and were recommended to try this place by the concierge at our hotel. We thought we would give it a shot, and were pretty disappointed. We tried the Pork Belly, the Caesar salad, the chile relleno, the lamb shank, and the churros. Overall, the flavors just weren't there for me. The pork belly was tender and well cooked but was not that flavorful at all. It was also paired with a strawberry rhubarb tamal which I thought would be interesting but didn't pair well with the pork in my opinion. The lamb shank was perfectly cooked and fell right off the bone. The sauce, beans, and green rice were good but somewhat muted in terms of flavor. I will say the hot sauce that is paired with it, was a nice touch. The churros were the redeeming factor for me and the reason for the 3.5 versus a 3. They were absolutely delish. The caramel and chocolate sauce were really good and the churros were even filled with a cinnamon sugar middle. The service was not on par with what I would expect from a highly regarded restaurant like this. For example, we waited over 20 mins for the churros after placing the order and were not offered dessert options until we asked for the menu. You could almost tell the server was annoyed with us even though we didn't do anything to warrant it. Superb ambience. Superb food. The vegetarian tower was delectable - who knew marinated tomatoes, eggplant, Avacado, and pesto was so good you'd eat it off the floor!!!! The Robin's Egg was a piece of art. Coconut outer shell. Inner strawberry and raspberry compote. Whipped cream. And the yolk was a hand made mango gelatinous ball that "broke and oozed" just like the yolk of an egg!! We will return the next time we're in Santa Fe to try their other menu items. While in Santa Fe for work, my dad's business colleagues had a meal at Zacatlan and we got to tag along. We were so thrilled with our experience. First and foremost, the staff were wonderful. They were kind, patient, and helpful. We had a lot of split check requests, as well as a birthday celebration request. They handled all requests with grace, kindness, and professionalism. Thank you!!! Second, the space is darling! Quaint and intimate, the restaurant has a surprising amount of space for tables and is filled with delightful local art and character. We loved the overall ambiance and general vibe. A perfect reflection of Santa Fe and New Mexican art and architecture! Next up, the drinks were great! With a wide selection of signature cocktails, wines, and local beers, there is a lot to choose from! My spouse got the 7K IPA from Santa Fe Brewery and I got the Hibiscus Margarita. Both were scrumptious. Several other folks got drinks and enjoyed their beverages. The food was the star of the show. Several folks started with the burrata and that was a crowd pleaser. I got the elk medallion special and it was DIVINE and very filling. My spouse got the duck and LOVED the spicy mole sauce. My parents shared the lobster Mac and cheese and loved the flavors. Our first restaurant- for brunch- after arriving in Santa Fe. Our friends wanted to try this spot and we were seated right away. The sauce is a converted home with side dining areas pocketed off the small room where you enter. Ambiance is tastefully decorated Mexican and southwestern with sunlight pouring through windows in late morning. We started with a basket of excellent homemade crisp tortillas, house made salsas and guacamole. Our table ordered molé negro, huevos rancheros rojos and scrambled eggs with heirloom cherry tomatoes, wilted arugula and salsa. All of our dishes were filling and tasty but not over the top. Now to the entree.. the whole red snapper, I was so excited about this, I love whole fish bone, head and everything. However when the fish arrived there was so much going on with the meal (sea photos) , I can't even articulate it well. They have a nice Wine List and make a delicious Spicy Jalapeños Margarita that made my husbands eyes roll!! The next time you are in Santa Fe make a reservation, you will not be disappointed! Although he had some difficulty locating my reservation for a few minutes upon my arrival, my server, Jose, was pretty attentive from the moment I sat at my table til I left. Hearing everything he had to share about their top selling apps and entrees, I decided to order their bone marrow app and red snapper meal. Their bone marrow app was on point! A rather generous portion with four marrows and I liked their flavorings. Their red snapper entree, not so much. It appears that they used a frozen snapper and as someone who buys fresh fishes to cook frequently, I could tell that the fish was frozen. Such a shame as I had higher expectations with zacatlan being a James beard semifinalist. Add to the insult, I feel that their cocktails were not given the proper they deserve - they were diluted for the price you pay (I ordered their house margarita & red sangria). The octopus (pulpo enamorado a la plancha) was the best in town as we did a pulpo comparison of three restaurants over the last two weeks. Ceviche with homemade blue corn tortillas was really good. What a home run! This delightful place is tucked in a quiet neighborhood with modern design and chef inspired menu that offers regional flavors, a great wine list and tasty appetizers. Judith was our server and she is excellent. Friendly and made us feel right at home. We started with onion rings, moved on to lobster bisque and French onion soup, then finished with Cobb salads (we were trying to eat light.) The service is sweet and attentive. We shared two appetizers (porched pear salad and ceviche). The ceviche was the best I've ever had. Cold, fresh and citrusy. The pear salad was also delicious. The entree, Cochinitas Pibil was incredible. I was not a huge mole fan, but this... Oh it was very flavorful, without being heavy. You betcya, now I am a mole fan! Hands down, the best meal in Santa Fe on our last trip. I had the prawn, which didn't have the weird sweet flavor and texture I usually associate with shrimp. It was spicy and unique. My husband had the carnitas starter, and I am usually not a fan of carnitas but this was next level. Instead of the usually bland flavor of carnitas I am used to, this was juicy and bursting with it. We visited SF a little over a month ago (pre high tourist season) and had a reservation at Zacatlan for one night mid-week. We found street parking fairly easily (drove around the block a couple of times to scope it out) and had an easy walk to the restaurant. It's a cute place with a tasteful decor. We were seated on the patio, which was a great spot in early May with a nice, cool breeze coming through doors and windows. They have a full-ish bar. Beer and wine, plus a small list of alcohol. I started with a margarita. The Hubs ordered a bottle of wine and started with a glass of it (of course we both finished it with dinner!). After perusing the menu, for starters The Hubs ordered a soup that was a special, I think Passion Fruit Gazpacho. I started with the Pulpo Enamorado a la Plancha (came with Citrus Tartare, Avocado, Capers, Papas Bravas). Both starters, wine and margarita were excellent! For entrees, we both decided on the Whole Fried Snapper (assembled with risotto, sautéed kale, broccolini, and veracruz salsa). We both ordered this after seeing photos of it online and thinking that it was something we hadn't had anywhere before. I'd say that the dish was just OK. I wouldn't order it again. I didn't take a photo, but if you look at the ones other people have posted, it's a whole fried fish (duh) presented on your plate in a 'U' shape with the head and tail pointed up and the filleted fish, risotto, et al in the center. The concept is great. The execution - not so much. It was OK, but not as tasty as I was hoping for. Everything kind of 'mushed' together in the middle. Anyway, for dessert, we had the Flan de Elote (custard, freeze-dried corn, caramelized popcorn). It was tasty and enjoyable. Overall, we had a nice time. Our server was fine, not great (wasn't around when we needed something). I might be inclined to eat here again and try some of the other entrees, but it won't be my first choice when I book a reservation. read more

I have to say everything about this experience was fairly mediocre- atmosphere, food, service. We got the fish tacos (grilled) and sopecitos. The fish tacos didn't seem grilled at all, they seemed lightly fried with an odd curry-flavored seasoning. It literally tasted like curry. Otherwise it was completely bland. So I just felt like i was eating plain fish with curry seasoning. The sopecitos were ok but nothing stood out about them. There is no real vibe there, the atmosphere was like... unpolished? Incomplete? The music, decor, just the general appearance of the inside, nothing felt fully thought out or quite complete. I want to eat here for every meal! Not only are people who work here are wonderful and welcoming but the food is phenomenal! I came at lunch time wanting to try the well reviewed chile relleno but that's on the dinner menu. So I chose to try sopecitos per the waitress' recommendation. I was really impressed. There are 3 of them on the plate and each one with a different topping. The corn base was really good and thick, actually was too much for me because I had to eat all 3 on my own, with no one to share:( One had chicken, one had pork and third was vegetarian. All 3 were delicious. The radish on top was a great addition. The sauce (thankfully served on the side) was super spicy for my white girl tastebuds. But I tried it and it's full of flavor. Nom nom! I came back for dinner to try the chile relleno. It was worth it!!! I was savoring every bite. And even though it was just veggies and cheese inside, everything tasted really good together. The mole was pure heaven. I don't think I've ever had mole but I feel like I'll be comparing every mole from now on to this one. The whole dish tasted so well balanced with amazing roasted flavor. Im already planning to come here for at least one meal tomorrow which is my last day here. I would come here every day if I was local. read more

We had the Robin Egg for dessert and it was yummy and the most unique dessert we've ever had. The mezcal margaritas were very, very good. Our waiter was delightful, friendly and prompt. We had a reservation for 8:45 - was not seated until 9:15. No explanation beyond "just a little backed up" and no apology or offer of a drink while we waited. Service went downhill from there. Once seated, the waitress provided no explanation of menu items or suggestions. Unusual for a restaurant like this. Had to ask for water to be refilled and was not asked if we'd like another cocktail. Given the service, this is a restaurant I would not return to even if everything else was prefect. But it was not. Atmosphere is meh. There is no character. It could be any restaurant. Also, while a small thing, if every entree is over $40, there should not be paper table covers. Cheapens the entire experience. Food was the star here but not amazing. If I was grading food only, this would be a 4 star review. It was solid. Service needs a major overhaul. read more

We were there for a celebration dinner and found that our phones in reservation was recorded for the wrong day. The hostess was gracious and found us a table on the patio (enclosed in the winter). Service was great, Gracie was thoughtful, attentive and made great recommendations. Can't speak highly enough of the lamb shank, pork shank, and duck entrees -- each with a different mole. Starters of pear salad and carnitas were excellent as well. Portions were large (we took some home) and we didn't have room for dessert. Passionate Chef Eduardo Rodriguez's Zacatlan was a nominee in 2022 for best new restaurant of the southwest region. He is always thinking about food and is inspired by his family. The name Zacatlan was inspired by his birthplace in Zacatecas, Mexico, which is defined as "the habitants of the land where grass grows." The flavors of Zacatlan incorporate both Southwestern and Mexican influences. G and I came to Zacatlan to celebrate our anniversary and the staff was incredibly humble and sweet. We ordered a variety of items including the ceviche, the stuffed squash blossoms and the chili relleno. The dishes were very unique and flavorful but not overwhelmingly spicy. The interior of the restaurant is lovely and comfortable. We were seated at a table at which the noise level was not too loud and we were able to enjoy our dinner intimately. For a small town restaurant, it is excellent if a bit pricey. Compared to restaurants in a big city, on the other hand, it is a good value, but the food misses in a few places in my opinion. In particular, some dishes, emphasize aesthetics and neglect flavor. Like the chile relleno - a beautiful dish, but the pepper itself was definitely undercooked. And the cochinita pibil came with a "tamal de holla" consisting of polenta in a chili sauce, but the ratio was weird - like a tiny teaspoon of polenta swimming in sauce. The different pieces of the "vegetariano" starter didn't really marry for me, it was too saucy yet not very flavorful, and the eggplant was undercooked (the skin of the eggplant was a little tape-y and would have benefited from more cooking or charring or something I think). The meats were cooked really well, the portions were generous, the ingredients seemed good quality, and the sauces were tasty and really New Mexico-y.
