Zachary's is the first and ONLY place I've ever had deep dish pizza at. Why? Whenever someone I know gets deep dish somewhere else - whether it be in the Bay Area or even in Chicago - my first question is: "Is it better than Zachary's?" I've yet to receive a "yes" in response. Even those who've had Chicago deep dish hesitate. And from that alone, I can tell that my love of Zachary's isn't just a short-sighted, never-been-anywhere-else type of thing. I had Zachary's for the first time when I was a kid. As a I grew up, I kept going back. I went to college near one and continued going. I even broke some major life news to my parents at this very Zachary's location. And even now, decades removed from that very first time as a kid, I still find myself hunting for any Bay Area Zachary's that I happen to be near. The spinach and mushroom deep dish is my go-to. But really, any deep dish is delightfully delectable. Heck, even their thin crust pizzas are tasty if you're hankering for a change. Maybe one day I'll find another place that has deep dish as good as Zachary's. Until then, I'll keep asking my friends if their new deep dish spot matches up to the best. And if it doesn't? I wanted to follow up my review with a note that it was great that the manager, I think, reached out and apologized and gave us a coupon for 50% off for a pizza. It was funny though as we went in next time and they made a mistake on our pizza at the restaurant and so gave us 50% off of that pizza also. I don't mind so much mistakes, as they do happen, and any restaurant that admits them and tries to fix them is great as far as service is concerened for me. I first heard of Zachary's through a friend. He had actually brought some pizza to me from his day trip to the Bay Area. One taste was all it took. I was determined to visit this place for a whole pie. This was honestly the best way to top our day trip. My daughter and I spent the afternoon flying kites by the Golden Gate and popped in on our way home. First thing I have to tell you is that it's difficult to find parking. Zachary's is part of a little downtown strip of restaurants, cafés, and shops. We drove up and down for probably 20 minutes looking for a spot. Eventually, we found a space out in the residential area a couple blocks away and around the corner. I will warn you. We spotted some deer roaming around people's front yards. Yes. DEER. The place was busy and for good reason. I immediately loved the decor and atmosphere. The inside was stacked with red bricks. The entire wall of the dining room was decorated with awesome artwork from various local artists. I loved it. It was great to sit and admire. We had a pepperoni because that's my daughter's favorite. When it shows up, it's propped up on it's own stool, giving it the respect it deserves, and sliced right in front of you. The cheese pull off of one of these slices is heavenly. I could jump rope with it. Be really careful you don't burn your lips on that sea of sauce. It is piping hot. It was so good. And these pies are filling. We had to box it up and take that massive thing home. I felt like I was carrying a box of mashed potatoes. The staff was slammin' and jamming' the entire time we were there. The experience and organization was apparent. Everything was handled so well and in such and orderly fashion. I loved being there. I haven't had a dish deep pizza in so long so I've kinda been turned off to the idea of eating one (team thin crust). BUT Zacharys was SO good! It didn't feel super greasy or heavy like I thought it would. All of the ingredients were perfectly layered. You get a perfect crust that's isn't too thick, a nice filling of toppings, not too much cheese but the perfect amount, and a delicious layer of tomato sauce. Seriously the sauce was so good. I was in town for the Berkeley Half Marathon and all I could think of that weekend was the post race pizza that I would be eating here! After I was seated, I ordered their small chicken special stuffed pizza. *Small 10 inch Chicken Special stuffed pizza* Bring your appetite because even for a small pizza, it is still a lot of food for 1 person. It took about 30 minutes from the time it was ordered for the small pizza to come out. I love the combination of chicken and basil in this pizza. There's no doubt that if I'm ever in the Berkeley area again, I'll definitely be coming here for another stuffed pizza. I don't understand why all these pizza places are so popular. I keep trying to find some really great pizza but if I have to be honest with myself, Round Table usually beats most of these local places. I had the Zachary's Special, WTF was that? Where was the cheese? I guess there was some cheese but it was mostly sauce, and salty sauce at that. I've had Chicago style pizza before and the best thing about it is the abundance of cheese and toppings. That's not the case here. I think this place is profiting on herd mentality. Everyone pretends they like it because everyone else is pretending to like it. It's a shame, I really wanted to like it, but I have to be honest with myself, I wish I had gone to Round Table. This place is great! Especially when you are craving deep dish. We ordered the house special Spinach and Mushroom and got artichoke as well. We got mushrooms on half of the pizza because I personally do not like them unfortunately :/ The great thing about this specific pizza is that you can taste how good the cheese is, and the combination is on point. And the sauce, they really put a lot, which I love so much! And it tastes good at the same time. The bottom layer is crunchy while the rest is topped with tasty goodness! However, it is only located in Berkeley/Oakland, so if you are in the area you should definitely get it, but if you are elsewhere, especially in South Bay, Patxi's is definitely a good option which tastes almost as good. Deep dish is my favorite type of pizza, and the deep dish here doesn't disappoint! From the reviews, it seems like usually there is a pretty long wait around dinner time, especially on the weekend, but my friends and I were able to get seated immediately during prime dinner time on Saturday. Apparently we came during the right weekend, that awkward time after graduation but before any summer activities have started, so there were very few people around. Score! We ordered two large deep dish pizzas for the seven of us and that was just enough. One of the pizzas we got with vegan cheese to try it out, and while it was decent, I still preferred the real deal. Of the two pizzas we ordered, my favorite was the Carne pizza, which is very appropriately named as it comes with chorizo sausage, pepperoni, salami, chopped bacon, and mozzarella. The best part about the whole pizza was the thick and hearty layer of tomato sauce that smothers the rest of the toppings. Now that's what I call a real deep dish pizza! The other pizza we ordered was the spinach and mushroom, and while that was good for a vegetarian pizza, the carnivore in me much preferred the meatier Carne pizza. The pizza here is really filling. I ate two slices and walked out stuffed, and was still pretty full when I woke up the next morning. (or maybe that's just me) Parking is all on the street. There were multiple spots open less than a block away from Zachary's, but again that's probably due to the scarcity of people around. The total pp came to about $15 which is a crazy steal for how filling this meal was. Definitely want to come back again and try their other pizzas! read more

Oh Zachary's how I love you. If you like deep dish pizza, Zachary's is the place for you. I've had a lot of deep dish pizzas in the Bay, and Zachary's is by far the best. Zachary's is perfect for a fresh baked pie or a half baked pie you can take home and bake when you're ready to eat it. The hardest things to get right, with deep dish, are the crust and the sauce. Zachary's sauce is perfect. It is thick with tomatoes and has the perfect blend of salt and spices. They cover a bed of cheese and toppings and come on a perfectly crispy crust. Although you can eat this with your hands, this isn't a folding New York pizza. This is a gut busting Chicago style slice. My favorites are the Zachary's special and the meat lovers, but the bbq chicken and the spinach and tomatoes didn't disappoint either. The pies are epic but Zachary's also has a great selection of beers to wash down your pizza. Be careful on Cal game days, it gets crowded, but stop on by for a cold one and a slice or pie. This is my favorite pizza place in Berkeley, and I'm heavily biased because deep dish is my favorite! I love the gooey layers of cheese and heaping amount of tomato sauce on top! Pros - lots of vegetarian options such as bell peppers, onion, garlic, mushroom, spinach. As well as plenty of meat lover toppings. I love that the toppings are embedded in the pizza instead of just on top. My favorite is the mushroom spinach vegetarian one. - the pizza serving is huge and leaves me feeling full and satisfied. I can usually eat 2-3 slices and am stuffed - great for sharing with friends since it feeds so many people - the tomato sauce is my favorite it has a perfect blend of sweet and tartness - you can freeze leftovers and the pizza is just as nice later! Pop them in the oven and it's good as new Cons - the line and wait can be ridiculous at times going over an hour!! - it's packed so service can be very slow - the pizzas are the on the pricey side but it's worth it for deep dish. As I'm getting older I can't eat the way I used too. Tonight I had a slice of thin crust and had a hard time liking it. The pizza was supper salty and there was barely any sauce. We had ordered takeout since it was late and I was in no mood to cook. The pizza was however piping hot and smelled delicious when we got it. The person over the phone was very courteous and gave us the amount for the pizza and time for pick up. When I was half my age I could eat a slice of the thick crust pizza and be happy doing it. I used to love the crust It was something new and waiting in line was no problem. Thanks to getting older and having less tolerance for things I just can't do it anymore. read more

Filling, tasty, and a single slice is basically a meal. Good sauce, a lot of cheese and I kind of enjoy that it isn't a ton of crust. All their specials are great, and it's certainly a place I take people to when they love pizza as it will be a new experience for them. The pizza's seem pricy up front for the cost, but for how much you get and how filling it is they are actually quite reasonable. If you haven't been? Go. At least once. The restaurant- Walking into Zachary's in Berkeley, you really get the feeling that it's a historic building that's being kept alive with good people and good food. Really cool and casual decor (please see photo collage) and the amazing inviting smell of baking pizza really pulls you in and hints at the delights waiting for you. Lots of fun pizza based artwork on the walls by some really legit artist/ fans. The pizza- We ordered a "standard" (non-deep dish) cheese and olive pizza and also a deep dish "Zachary's Special" which is a "combo pizza" of Italian sausage, green peppers, onion, mushrooms and cheese. As is the case with most Chicago style deep the "toppings" go on the bottom (on the dough) and the tomato sauce goes on top. I really like the way the sauce gets real heat from the oven and mellows the acid in the tomato sauce. The restaurant space is rather cozy. An ingenious way to delivering your deep dish pizza to your table is by placing it on it's very own wooden stool next to your table! This is such a great idea! (Pro tip- it also lets you oogle what other people are eating so that you get a free preview before you decide what to order) The standard olive and cheese pizza was good...but I'm not sure I would say it beats any handmade pizza at many places. The deep dish however is a different story. So thick and rich and the flavors blend so well. So filling. I would say this is super good deep dish pizza! Absolutely delicious! The neighborhood- This area of Berkeley is super cool. Really easy to walk and see some neat things. You might plan on spending an hour or so checking it out. We had a blast visiting a really neat bookstore, and enjoyed handmade premium ice cream for dessert at iScream! What a great day in a great neighborhood. The service- Super nice employees. Great service. At one point a random dog just ran into the restaurant through the front door. A quick thinking employee used an apron to quick fashion a "leash" to take the dog outside. She gave the dog water, and went about trying to find the owner. So nice to see the caring. It's work going to the Zachary's website and reading about the "employee ownership" policy and how the restaurant was founded. Check out Zachary's for that pizza fix! Our Zachary's journey goes back to 1984, at the College Ave site just before the birth of our daughter. We have been going mostly to the Berkeley one in the past decades. And now that same daughter brings us to the Pleasanton site as a frequent customer. Wife and I took that deep dish love to Chicago to try Mainati's. Frankly, we prefer Z over M, even though M goes further back. So, Z has our vote for deep dish with stuffed mushroom and spinach as the favorite. read more

My first visit here was positive, but not necessarily representative of what this place can do. There is upside. My wife and I stopped by here while doing a long walk through Solano and Berkeley. I give her credit for spotting Zachary's and knowing that it has a pretty solid pizza reputation. We did not have a big appetite so we opted to try a slice. Unfortunately this place only makes the thin crust pizza available by the slice (but I am thankful that they made this available). Pepperoni thin crust pizza: 3.5/5. The crust was the highlight, which was a little crispy on the bottom, and the right amount of chew. The toppings were okay, but honestly, due to the simple toppings, this is a touch one to hit a home run with. I would like to return and try one of the thick crust pizzas. read more

Great experience again at Zachary's Pizza! Yeah it's a bit pricey $32 for a small, however a small pizza fed both of us and we had 2 pieces left over. Ingredients are fresh and they offer vegan cheese. The crust was perfectly cooked with a great flavor. The only downside was, they couldn't make the Mediterranean vegan because they mix the feta with the veggies. The service was great. We called our order in and picked it up to go. I highly recommend calling in if you're getting deep dish because it takes a good 30 minutes to cook. read more

So! Def enjoy eating this place . I understand that many others do too, making it a busy place. But, I find myself and my family waiting for a pick up waaayyyy loooonnnggeeer than what I was told. I ordered ahead being told that it would be 30 -40min for the pick up,and I arrived five minutes after our given time. Upon arrival, I was told my order wasn't ready and it was going to take another 10 minutes. Turned into 20 min ( I don't think my order was ready because I saw them making It ) actually took an hour and 15 min to get my pizza. From when I spoke with the associate. Idk if they're slammed then tell me it's going to take an hour instead Of 40 min. I'm over here waiting for a pizza with a baby crying, cause of poor customer service. Great stuffed pizza place! Went with a group of 4 for Saturday lunch. No line to get in. We ordered the Stuffed Zachary's Special, which took about a half hour to get (be prepared to wait, maybe order some appetizers). It tasted delicious, and was about enough of a serving size for everyone (except for me, which was a bit smaller than I wanted).
