Zankou is an LA institution. This isn't the original murder chicken location in East Hollywood, but honestly that's a good thing. This Sunset location feels cleaner and actually maintained. The original spot feels like whichever side of the family runs it just stopped caring years ago. I've actually never eaten inside this location. It's always been a pickup spot for me. I have eaten inside the North Hollywood location dozens of times though because I have a friend who, for some reason, always gets the tri-tip. One thing Zankou does really well is packaging. Everything is sealed up properly, organized, and survives the trip home better than most takeout places. My biggest wish is that they'd make their own pita bread. Imagine getting this chicken with fresh baked bread coming out of the oven instead of packaged pita. That would elevate the whole experience to another level. Somehow none of the locations do that. So yeah, if you're choosing between locations, I'd point people toward this one or one of the newer stores instead of the original spot. The chicken is still the chicken. From the first time I took a bite from Zankou Chicken, I feel I love... let's say it was love at first bite. The chicken is so juicy and very flavorful, you can choose your sides to make your dinner your own. We choose rice,cucumber salad, tabouli and eggplant hummus. Crazy to think I've been enjoying Zankou since 1999 at original South Pasadena location.....First time at this location in Hollywood off Sunset! Amazing chicken!!! I believe the skin is marinated with citrus and absolutely delicious!! My favorite is the tri tip kabob extra juicy!!! Ordered a chicken kabob plate with rice, hummus and a garden salad. The chicken kabob was great, mix of light and dark meat. The garden salad was also very fresh and full of tomatoes and lightly dressed. I was surprised to see the plate came with 2 full size pita breads too. Prices are killing once what I regarded as a good deal, but in part do to inflation,, this place is not such a steal anymore. I ordered the chicken shawarma bowl. At almost $18 and the portion of shawarma you receive, I do not believe these prices to be justified when you can easily go to a mom, n 'pop shawarma spot that's gonna serve food with a bit more love. I will say, the chef gave me a bigger portion of shawarma sfter I had confronted them over the shrinkflation issue. Shawarma was marinated , but not as tenderized. Rice was under seasoned and the hummus was a bit oily and mid. Not sure if I'd be back here again. The only reason for. 3/5 as opposed to a 2/5 is solely by the fact they gave me more meat. Oops! How did I omit a review for one of my go-to LA fast food faves?? I'm a creature of habit and like swallows returning to Capistrano, my order is consistent and I recommend it no matter which satellite Zankou you're eating from. The Chicken Tarna plate is my hands-down vote, look no further (altho the beef shawarma is wonderful). The chicken is layered, breast over breast, on the rotating skewer causing all the rendering juices to cascade upon each other. Then a serrated knife comes along to slice strips off the leading edges; crispy bits mingling with juicy bits. Heaven. Your order will come with a couple of pitas, soft and fresh, a ladle each of hummus and tahini, pickled sliced beet, and a tomato and romaine salad sliced into ribbons. Be sure you get two taco cups of their famous garlic sauce- this is why you came. No really. My method of construction is to halve the pitas into a basic taco shell structure. Smear the interior with the garlic sauce, then scoop the sliced chicken, then each side into your Mediterranean taco structure. Top with salad and devour. The Greeks spoke of ambrosia being the food of the Gods. I'm convinced they meant Zankous Chicken Tarna plate. If you're flush with dough, get a beef shawarma to go, for later. read more

As a small business owner I try not to leave bad reviews based on one bad interaction because I know reviews have an impact on a business, and I assume even the best businesses have bad days. Sadly, a bad day here and there is not what you get when you're dealing with the female manager at Zankou. To say she's terrible at her job would be an understatement. For management I am specifically speaking about the female manager who worked at 8p on Sunday, June 7th at the Sunset location. Every single time I order thru Postmates there is an issue with the order; any time I try to make an adjustment, even when I offer to pay more, the manager refuses to do it. My order is normally $50, and the manager absolutely refuses to make my order all dark meat instead of white and dark, because she says they charge $1 more for all dark meat. I said great "I'll pay", she says there's no way to do that. I offer to just pay for a whole new piece of dark meat, "no, we can't do that". I ask "what can I do", she says I'm sorry I can't help you. She's literally turning down money because she's too lazy and apathetic to offer any solutions. She's rather lose our business than make a $1 adjustment or figure out a way to change the total to charge me more. What's funny is that whenever I interact with any other employee they are ALWAYS helpful, except for the female manager. The food is awesome and all the other employees are amazing, but dealing with the female manager is so exhausting and she's insufferable that next time I'm just going to order something from Panda Express or a Nick the Greek. read more

Wow! I have to give a shout out to Zankou on Sunset near Fairfax... and the Assistant Manager Roberto who helped me with a food order serving 30 people. I was impressed. I am of Armenian descent... I eat at all the Armenian restaurants around Hollywood, Glendale and Burbank. I was going to have 30 family and friends over and wanted to serve some kebobs, sides and salads on a Monday night. Many of my usual go-to restaurants are closed on Mondays. I don't normally think of Zankou as a place to get kebobs and to be honest it is not a place I have been to in a while... but they are open on Mondays so I decided to give them a taste test by doing a takeout order for two people, one of whom has many allergy restrictions. I went in to make my order and as good luck would have it Roberto was there at the register. I asked him a lot of questions about ingredients explaining I needed to be very careful about food allergies. Without hesitation he confidently knew exactly how Zankou's food was prepared and with what ingredients. He was friendly, seemed to care about my allergy needs, knowledgeable, professional. Even though I was just making an order for two, he gave me a lot of attention. I brought the food home and I was impressed with how everything tasted. I always liked Zankou's whole chickens... but I didn't remember Zankou's other items tasting this good. In fact, their Chicken and Lule kabobs, Mutabbal, and Hummus were as good as many other Armenian Lebanese places I usually frequent. The Lule kabob and Mutabbal were eaten by someone with allergy restrictions and they had no adverse reactions. We enjoyed the food but what made me really want to go back to Zankou with my 30 person order was the expert treatment I got from Roberto for just a 2 person order. I went back a few days later and Roberto was there. He helped me put together my order and assured me that everything would be packed securely and separately to protect the people at my gathering who had food allergies. Two days later when I was picking up my order, everything was packaged just like he promised and the order was ready right on-time. Roberto went through my huge order with me, double checking that everything was there... which it was. Everyone at my gathering was impressed. The food was tasty and fresh. We had the chicken and beef lule kabobs, hummus, mutabbal, rice, cucumber salad, cabbage salad, garlic sauce, falafel and tahini... plus plates/utensils etc. Many Armenian restaurants in L.A. are closed on Mondays... but not Zankou. Utensils are consistently never included even when the option to include utensils is literally checked yes on the app. Am I supposed to eat meat and rice with my hands? Why is it assumed that I would just have a fork wherever I'm at? This time, however, the presentation and cooking were poorly executed, and the difference was immediately noticeable. Conveniently my favorite location aside from the original in East Hollywood!! The rotisserie chicken well done cut into 6, with a bunch of garlic sides, pickled turnips, chiles and a mountain of their fluffy, simply savory rice and the family is feasting. Super simple and purely delicious. Zankou is an LA classic. The shish kabob skewers are great with flavor throughout the meat not just the surface. The marinade is delicious and I like to ask for it well done cause it creates this crisp on the outside that is to die for!! Zankou is, in my opinion, the #1 place to go if you want a healthy, filling, reasonably priced takeout meal in WeHo. My personal favorite menu item is the shish kabob skewer which is tender and packed with flavor. Their half chicken is huge with yummy seasoning too. The meals come with 2-3 sides and pita bread (if you get a kabob meal, it also comes with onions and a grilled tomato). Their cucumber salad and tabbouleh are amazing. Portions are very generous. Try the picked turnips and mint lemonade too. My only criticism is that some of the menu pricing doesn't make any sense - why is a side of hummus $6? They'd probably make more money offering a smaller portion for $1.50 - $3.00. They have parking and the staff are always super friendly. read more
