I went the Montebello Zankou Chicken to enjoy a delicious meal and support a local eatery...unfortunately I was disappointed. I walked in and the two clerks were sitting at a table away from the counter. They both looked bored based on how they had their hands holding up their heads. I was not sure if they were guests waiting for their order or if they were employees. The clerk whose name I unfortunately did not get did not have gloves or a mask on. I looked around and noticed that only one of the two cooks had a mask on. I asked the clerk who was assisting me as to why they were not wearing a mask. She said to me that they do wear masks but it is hot and difficult to breathe through so they took them off. I did not know the Corona Virus avoided people who were hot or found it difficult to breathe through a mask. As a guest I would expect that they would consider my safety which I was obviously wrong. The COVID-19 is something they don't take seriously yet they have a jar labeled "hazard pay". I would say that based on their lack of safety precautions there is no hazard and hence no need for the jar. Needless to say I will not be back as long as this pandemic is around. read more

I went here at around 5:30 pm to grab dinner and was surprised that there were already people dining in. I was really happy that there is a Zankou Chicken opened up near my house (only ten minute drive) compared to the thirty minute drive (locally) to Pasadena. So, I know that there are several Zankou Chickens in the area, but I've only been to the Pasadena one. I thought all the Zankou Chicken restaurants look the same, but the Montebello Branch is totally different. The decor is really, really nice. The menu placed on top was black with white lettering. I was actually stumped on what to get because I usually order the Chicken Tarna Plate at the Pasadena one. The menu had no pictures and I was "restaurant-shocked" (think Culture shock). But, anyway I found it on the menu (it's called Tarnas Plate instead). The cashier girl was really, really sweet and I didn't need to wait long for my order. When I opened my box, I thought okay - it looks the same as the one in Pasadena. Then I tried the chicken. The chicken was sooo dry, hard, and cold. It only took me ten minutes to get home, I doubt the meat would become so brittle and flakey already. The chicken was not marinated and it tasted very bland. The sesame sauce was watery, and they did not give enough garlic dip. The hummus and the salad (turnips, tomatoes, lettuce) was the only consistent part, unfortunately. The falafel was okay, had better. I wanted to like this place so much only because the Pasadena one was really good!! Although the setting is much nicer and the staff were friendlier, I still prefer the run-down Pasadena joint. Besides, it makes eating the food so much greater, too. read more

So I have to say, the food was amazing I mean really amazing! However, the service was horrible. I have a baby with nut allergies, I asked several times if they used nuts in any of there food dishes. They told me no. I even explained that my baby has severe nut allergies and they still told me no. I fed my 17 month old baby some of their food and within minutes his face was swelling up. We called 911, he was transported to Presbyterian Hospital then after 6 hours there, he was transported to CHOC Children's Hospital in the PICU unit. After he was finally ok and released from the hospital I called the restaurant and spoke with an employee, she had a very careless attitude about everything that had happened. I had again asked her, do you guys use nuts in ANYTHING AT ALL. She then told me well we cook our falafel in peanut oil but you didn't order falafel... I was dumbfounded. Then I called back and spoke to the manager, I told him I wasn't calling to start trouble, I was calling because my son could have died. Whenever food is made even in the same factory as nuts it can cause someone with nut allergies to get anaphylaxis. He had no knowledge whatsoever about cross contamination. He just kept arguing that he'd never heard of it in all his years. It was so frustrating and heartless that they didn't once ask if my baby was even ok?No apology nothing... I'm not writing this to say not to eat here. I'm writing this because I don't want this to happen to anyone else and it wasn't taken seriously by the restaurant at all. For quick middle eastern food to go this is a great place. I used to always eat their rotisserie chicken but would get this heavy feeling in my stomach after I would eat it. I later found out their secret family recipe includes marinating the chicken and other meats in a lot of BUTTER so its not like the chicken at California Chicken Cafe. So if you are trying to lose weight, don't go here but think of it as a nice cheat meal place! read more

Our family has been going to Zankou chicken for years in Glendale and Pasadena. Now, two of my kids live in Whittier/Montebello and we found this Zankou. The woman at the counter was very friendly and helpful. She had worked previously at the Zankou in Pasadena. We got the half chicken with rice, salad and hummus. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the skin was amazing. Of course we adore the garlic sauce. Everything was super fresh and delicious. When I come to visit, this is where we will go.
