Was driving on the main road and noticed that there are literally 4 chicken restaurants in a row. I wanted to give this place a try and I'm happy I did! Even though I prefer knowing what I'm getting myself into (good or bad), I really hate when I have to sift through such strongly opposing reviews to a place. Such is the case at this Zankou Chicken, and I can't lie... it scares me a little to have read so many glowing reviews with so many harshly critical reviews, too. Yet, for some crazy reason, we still decided to be open minded and give them a try. First, I tried to place an online order, and it failed miserably. The website refused to allow me to order more than 1 of something (one of the entrees). I tried three times to add TWO schawarma and tarna combo plates, but it wouldn't let me... no matter what way I tried to add them, so I had to call in my order instead. However, I had a huge problem with that because the young man with a very thick foreign accent who answered the phone either didn't understand me, or he couldn't hear me. I'd order a SMALL item, and he'd say back to me, "you want a medium?" I'd say again, NO, SMALL. This happened THREE SEPARATE times. Then I asked him to read back my order, and that was met with expected disaster. Somehow, we made it through the phone call, and I'm still trying to reserve judgment... but I'm not gonna lie. I'm really starting to sweat bullets and wonder what did I get us into here? Yikes. The food will be here soon. The moment of truth. Okay, we got the food, we ate it, and here's my assessment. At least with our food order, I can't give it 5 stars, and not even 4. I'd probably give 3.5. It was definitely decent. Nothing noteworthy, but decent. My daughter and I had ordered a chicken and beef combo, and while the meat was tasty, it was a tad dry. Not horribly dried out, but a little. I got ample portions of chicken and beef, ample portions of hummus (really good!!!) and tahini, ample pickled parsnips (or were those turnips?), but only a scant few pieces of lettuce and tomato..... and no cucumber salad. I would have much preferred to get the cucumber salad and/or more lettuce and tomato, and maybe even some dressing on the lettuce and tomato (if better represented). I was surprised that no rice was included, and that, I knew ahead of time. I'm just used to Mama's Hummus down the road a bit from this place, and they give the salad with dressing, the rice, hummus, garlic sauce, and whatever meat I choose. Anyway, I'm just saying. Yes, this place is closer to where I live. Yes, the food is decent, and I "might" be inspired to go back (my husband is not), but I'm still on the fence about it because I know I can consistently do better elsewhere. read more

I'm not much of a beef person unless it involves high end steak, but I would order this again! It goes great with the Jazmin rice! The service was great even with it being Superbowl Sunday....the manager did mention that they're still working on adding it to the app. Currently it only list the other city's that they are established in. Let me start with; I know this location recently opened so..... I understand there are some growing pains with the speed and service levels and we certainly faced those during our visit on this cold and rainy Tuesday evening. As for the food - I had always heard that is was a great place for not only rotisserie chicken but for the tarna plates, the shawerma, and for the kabobs. I had the Shawerma & Tarna Combo ($14.99) - the chicken was moist and seasoned beautifully, the beef was dry and resembled carne seca. The accompanying hummus, tahini, and salad were all great. The pita was warm and fresh. Other members of my party ate the Chicken Tarna plate ($14.49) and the Chicken Tarna Wrap ($11.99) - all with positive reviews. The plates are a much better value to the wraps -as the plate had ample food and two pitas - certainly enough for two people. I look forward to returning again - hopefully when the wait after ordering is less then the 15 mins it took this evening. I just left this location about 20 minutes ago and I had the worst experience. I was trying to feed a big family and had a few questions about portion sizes and what sides would go best with my order since I am not familiar with them. Besides not being greeted or feeling welcome at all, these questions were never answered and I received no help. She also had a frown down to her knees and I clearly was just an inconvenience. I told her very sweetly that she should smile. I was trying to cheer her up. I have written only 7 Yelp reviews in my 63 years and they were all 5 star reviews. When I have a negative experience with a service or business, I usually shrug it off however in this situation I just can't do it. My wife and I walked in and all of the tables were dirty as well as used napkins on the floor. Our wait was abnormally long and they placed our food on the counter without even having the decency to let us know that it was ready. When others had their food plated and placed on the counter the cashier would call their number but not for us. In regards to the food, I only took one bite as the meat was burned and dry and I couldn't finish it. It's obvious that the meat was burned and not suitable for consumption. Why would they even have the conscience to serve it. There are many restaurants and dining options on Moorpark Rd , Janss Mall, and The Oaks Mall so I would strongly suggest to the owner that if they wish for repeat customers it is imperative to have a training meeting with their employees. I wish I had read reviews before stopping here. Next, the falafel was overcooked and almost burnt. The tabbouleh and baba ghanoush salty. Rice was just alright (kind of hard to mess that up). I frequent Zankou Chicken restaurants. This weekend was the first time we visited this location. The ambiance isn't as maintained as other Zankou restaurants. There was a curtain in the dining area separating storage boxes and what looked like the employee lounge from the customer dining? We tried to find a clean table and not many were wiped down. The have a napkin dispenser by the trash so I wiped down our own table. The place needs a renovation bad. The bathrooms...the dining area... need a facelift. The cashier was nice. I'm not sure how she could tolerate all the heat coming from the oven. It seemed so close to her. We felt the heat from the cooking area and weren't as close as she was.
