In short: Zeke's blew me away. I had read about it, saw groupons for it, saw advertisements and never really made an attempt to try it out but my husband wanted to try something new so bought a groupon and decided to try it out. We walked in and looked over the menu at the counter. I was more distracted with the cooks breading, battering, and frying huge slabs of fish. Anyways, when i could tear my eyes away from the fishes being fried i noticed that they had an appetizer of clam strips (my absolute favorite!). I decided on a 5 piece order of chicken strips and my husband got the cod special which was two pieces of cod, fries, and hushpuppies. All I can say is O-M-G. This place isnt pretty, the staff arent there to be your best friend but that food was freaking amazing. This is the third time in a row I've been burned by Yelp's ratings and reviews. Maybe this place gets high marks because of nostalgia, or perhaps it's just that the people who eat here don't know much about good food. The place is a bit rundown and there were flies buzzing around our table. The fries were soggy and the fish was soaked in grease. I don't think they are frying at a high enough temperature. Listen if you are a fan of fried food, especially fried seafood, then you need to check out Zeke's. They've got all the classics like catfish, cod, shrimp, oyster, etc. I got the cod and it was awesome. The batter was thick but by no means overly doughy. The fish was cooked perfectly, moist and opaque meat. The portions are huge so it's a good bang for your buck. There are plenty of sides to choose from to round out your meal. They aren't going to win any decor or ambiance awards but it is a joint you walk into and know you're going to get some legit food. Well personally the divey joints have worked out well for me. Upon arriving and finding that Zeke's was a total dive, I was a bit excited and ready for some good food. We stood at the front counter waiting to order, ignored for several minutes "enjoying" the ambience. The manager was busy arguing with a patron on the phone who had just picked up a to-go order. They claimed to have not received their entire order, pieces of fish missing, etc. The manager disregarded their concern, told them they were incorrect and that all parts of the order were included. *click* He then proceeds to complain to the kitchen staff about the customer and how full of &#%* they were. He returns to the counter and takes our order....2 cod & chips combos. A very nice older woman then places a basket of complimentary hush puppy sticks on the counter. Before we can accept the basket, the "cheery" manager snatches it back, removes several hush puppy sticks and snaps at her "there are only 2 people on the order." We are handed our much less complimentary basket of hush puppy sticks. Our food arrived fairly quickly and looked pretty good. The fish batter was a bit dark because of older oil that it was fried in, but it was fairly late into the evening so I won't hold this against them. The fish was moist and flakey, complimented with the zing of some malt vinegar. The fries were soggy and greasy, leaving much to be desired. Another in our party had some banana pudding for dessert, which was filled with the most brown, slimy bananas you have ever seen. A friend asked me to go to lunch with him to Zeke's the other day; I'm generally not a fish and chips kind of guy, but whatever, I like to keep an open mind. And I must say that I liked it! Had the lunch special ($11.99)--2 pieces of fish (your choice of cod or catfish) with your choice of two sides. I ordered cod and for my sides I had the coleslaw and fried zucchini. Initially I felt that $11.99 was a pretty steep price to pay, but once the food came, turns out it was a pretty good deal. The two "pieces" of fish were huge! They came right out of the fryer and, best of all, they didn't have that old, "fishy" smell--the fish was really fresh! The sides were good too. All in all, i left satisfied. My girlfriend and I were over in Ft. Worth the other day, and we were deciding on a spot to eat. She suggested, being a TCU graduate, Zeke's. It was a spot that she used to frequent back in her college days that served great seafood then, and they are upholding the tradition to this day. The building is not easily visible from Camp Bowie, so be on the lookout for it or you may easily pass it. Once you enter, you order at the window and then go find a seat, they will bring out your food once it's prepared. If you go, definitely get the cod. All of the rest of the food is real good, nothing spectacular, but real good. They keep it simple, fried seafood that is done right. I ordered the catfish and shrimp basket, which was good, but I ended up liking what my girlfriend ordered more...the cod! Real good stuff! Put some malt vinegar on it, and I'm in heaven! What the heck? How can the crust on every fried object at a Fish n' Chips joint in Fort Worth, Texas be so good? I brought some family from out of town here... because I had a Groupon. When I have to feed some kids on a low budget, why not utilize a cheapskate's best friend.... collective bargaining? Zeke's has a very straightforward menu, but nothing jumps out at you at first. Why would I drive out to Fort Worth to indulge myself in a menu that appears to be very similar to good ol' Silver's? And that costs twice as much? Us 5, even with 2 kids, ate nearly $40! It is so worth it. The platters are not enormous, but everything is so tasty and so fried. Heck, don't those two attributes always go hand in hand? The only disappointing aspect of our experience was the pricing on the soups, which were not anything spectacular, probably due in part to the fact that gumbo is found in New Orleans and Clam Chowder is best on the East Coast. Why eat either in a city known as none other than Cowtown? The catfish is crispy and not fishy at all. I don't enjoy fishiness. Furthermore, the cod is so light in flavor that it benefits so much from Zeke's very yellow, thick tartar. The cod crust borders on some of the best I have had in terms of fishy crusting. My favorite sauce is actually the dill. The cocktail sauce boasts a nice tanginess. Good sauces, for sure. Sides are also superb. The fries were definitely disappointing, not offering much crispiness. Looking past that, the hush puppies, oddly formed into a thin cylindrical shape, were good and doughy. The corn nugget were crispy, creamy, and well seasoned. Lastly, the cornmeal-breaded and fried (tasted baked, for some reason) zucchini boasted a moistness that was just phenomenal. In Fort Worth, this is definitely a long-standing eatery that cranks out some fantastic grub. I heard about Zeke's from someone who lived here in the 70s, and I'm pretty sure nothing has changed since she used to frequent this dive. According to a poster on the wall, "hippies are welcome." I don't know about you, but when I think hippie I think of yogurt and granola--not deep fried everything, which is what you get at Zeke's. My tummy can only take so much grease, but the prices are great and I was pleased with all the vegetarian sides (all fried though). The corn nuggets are especially good! read more

Wait staff in my multiple experiences here has been 40% success rate of good ones, the rest are just having a bad day. Food, stick with the fried fish and shrimp, deviate from that and you are on your own. We have been eating here for years and years. The fried cod and all of the fried sides are the best. The catfish is solid but with the cod around, I would never be able to order the catfish. I have seen a couple of reviews of the side vegetables stating these are bland. The reason for this is their homemade "ranch" or actually a dill sauce is packed full of flavor and meant for your sides. The remoulade for the fish is great as well. Vinegar resides on the shelves in the back right corner or ask your server. Yes, we are supposed to leave tips for the servers. This place is everything you hope for when someone says fried fish or fish and chips. They are NOT messing around. My boyfriend and I both got the cod combo which comes with two pretty large perfectly battered cod filets and two veggies of your choice (by veggies I mean fried deliciousness!). I had the okra and cod nuggets while he had the okra and French fries. First off the cod is the stuff of dreams. Crispy crunchy outer layer with soft flaky perfect fish inside. We also shared a cup of the creamy shrimp gumbo which was delicious. Not only is the food here fantastic but the outdoor seating is fun when the weather is good and the staff seem to really know and care for one another. My Zeke's cheer!: 1-2-3-4! Fish and chips for $12.34? Ok, so I'm still newish to town and am still looking for a place to claim as my own. Zeke's has the uniqueness I'm looking for an the right amount of grunge. Hey, you even have the quirkity of having to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. I like that sort of feel, that they're just making do with the space they happen to have. The kind of feel that you can get from walls with 14 layers of paint from the last eighty years. Every chip reveals a rainbow. Now the fish was good. Unrivaled? No. Fries? Nobody's really expected to do too great on them anyway. Hushpuppies? Maybe I'm too much a Floridian to have understood these weird things. But for that price? Really? Maybe 7 or 8 bucks, but not for 12. At least they had RC on tap. Partially redeeming. In the end, Zeke's has some of those elements that would make it my local spot, but they couldn't close the deal for me. It's more like visiting someone's spot and wandering what they like so much about it but you're too good a friend to voice your opinion. Zeke's fish and chips are the only ones I've tried in Fort Worth and I gotta say they're huge, crispy, and full of meat. They go great with cocktail sauce. I'm not the biggest tartar fan and I really enjoyed the one they carry. Don't get any other sides except for fries. They offer three sides with one or two pieces of fish but it'll become a huge overload on fried food. Moderation is key here. I suggest one piece of fish and the fries. It's a little hole in the wall but it was absolutely amazing ! I got 1 cod 3 shrimp combo with okra and corn nuggets and it was the perfect amount of food for me. I can't believe I've lived in Fort Worth for over 25 years and never been to this place! We went tonight and it's definitely a dive, but has fantastic food. I had the fried catfish with fried shrimp and french fries. My wife had the boiled shrimp salad and my son had a fried shrimp burger. All of us agreed that we'd definitely be back for more to check out the rest of the menu especially because we didn't get a chance to try the fried cod. The hushpuppies were a little disappointing because they were the typical long frozen variety, but I've grown up on homemade ones with onions and jalapenos. A little pricey but we've grown to expect that around here for seafood unfortunately. This place has obviously been around for decades and definitely for good reasons. You know you're at the right place when people are line up out the door. Zeke's is a modest restaurant with a cute outdoor seating area. The staff was down to business but very accomodating. I was standing in like debating whether or not gamble on the slaw when a worker spontaneously handed me a small cup with a spoon so I could taste-test. Good people. I ordered the 2 cod fish, 2 "veg", hushpuppy combo. I put veggie in quotation marks because nothing on that list would pass your mother's criteria for a vegetable since it's basically all fried. The "veggies" that I ordered were fries and fried zucchini. My husband ordered okra and slaw. I ordered two cod pieces *tee-hee* because the same meal with one piece was called a snack. I figured the fish pieces must be rather small. No.... that is a lie. They are rather large and I wish I'd ordered the snack because I couldn't even start on the second one. The breading was delicious and the fish was perfectly fried and it really sang when I topped with malt vinegar. I have never had fish and chips that was so delicous. On to the sides, the "chips" were great, the slaw was what I'm always looking for in my slaw it was mayonnaise'y not too dry with a nice vinegar punch. Okay, those were the delicious sides and what I will order in the future. The other sides were not quite as great. The fried okra wasn't that great even though most people love it. It reminded me of a crisper version of the okra they serve in the school cafeteria. The fried zucchini was the greatest failure of execution in a dish that I've encountered in quit a while. Large round cuts of thin zucchini were coated in catfish cornmeal breading that was so thick and dry it was similar to biting into a poker chip. Had enough zucchini and mushrooms to share. The shrimp were really fresh, cod was cooked perfectly. If you like beer battered, fresh fish, oysters, or shrimp, Zeke's is the place to go. However, it is warm in there. It's crowded, and if you're waiting on a to go order, you feel as if you're always in someone's way, either customers or staff. Well, in my previous review update, I said I'd give Zeke's another chance, because of the multiple previous visits when I had gotten very good fried cod (the sides have never been anything special). So I did go back and give it another shot. I'll keep this brief. Once again, it was sadly just not worth the time or money. Once again, I'm pretty sure the fish had been cooked earlier, then "re-cooked" for my order. It just didn't look or taste fresh. It was greasy, overcooked, and bland. Ahoy! Set your sails for Zeke's Fish and Chips While I have known Fort Worth legendary hole-in-the-wall Zeke's Fish and Chips since I moved to town 14 years ago, I had not actually experienced Zeke's until today. Walking into the 40-year old unpretentious restaurant you are immediately greeted with the "Order Here" window and the friendly, yet purposeful, staff. For those who are new to Zeke's the menu can be overwhelming. Fortunately the line of patrons waiting to order (always a good sign) provides the opportunity to review the paper menu available for pickup on the counter. Once you order and pay for your food you are guided to a moderately sized 1970's lime painted dining room, home to 15 four-top tables. In addition to the dining room, Zeke's has a patio which would be a pleasant escape on a fall or spring day. Zeke's food is fresh and prepared to order which means you must plan to wait a few minutes before your food is delivered, but the complimentary hushpuppies keep you occupied while you wait. While these puppy sticks are definitely not like my Mississippi Grandma use to make, they are served hot and are very crunchy and tasty given their "Dallas-shipped frozen origin." Given Zeke's homemade cornmeal batter used for their catfish and shrimp I was surprised they did not serve homemade southern style hushpuppy balls. The Boston Clam Chowder was your average run of the mill chowder chalk full of cubed potatoes and Boston clams. Unfortunately it lacked the creamy rich flavor traditional to Boston Clam Chowder. One spoonful produced a gritty bite which was more than likely the result of residual sand from the fresh clams used in the recipe. Pleasantly the 3-piece fried oyster sampler produced 5-pieces of non-greasy addictive cornmeal battered oysters. These plump fried gems were perfectly battered and served piping hot with homemade "red sauce" which appeared to be ketchup, horseradish and cracked pepper. Have I mentioned these are addictive? I will be back! The Fish and Shrimp "daily special" consisted of a large thick slice of catfish and 4 chubby Gulf Shrimp. Both were hand dipped in perfectly seasoned cornmeal batter and lightly fried in vegetable oil resulting in a crispy shell and flaky catfish and succulent shrimp. The special was made complete with a side of crispy-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside lightly salted fries, a puppy stick and homemade oddly yellow tartar sauce. My guess is the tartar sauce was yellow due to the pickle relish and lemon juice used to make this tangy treat. A highlight of the meal was the á la carte shrimp taco served on a flour tortilla with a creamy 1000 Island-esque dressing, slaw, diced tomatoes and feta cheese. The shrimp taco was hands down better than the tempura battered Icelandic Cod taco. The shrimp was lightly fried and not too oily, which could not be said of the excessively greasy cod taco. For the health conscience who chose to avoid Zeke's fried delicacies, the menu boasts baked Icelandic cod and catfish, fresh boiled shrimp, salads, fresh sandwiches and somewhat out of the blue, spaghetti with meat sauce. Beware that the fresh boiled shrimp salad is just that - a basic garden salad with 8 unremarkable small chilled shelled tailless shrimp. If you decide to error on the side of healthy, recommended is the Chicken salad with avocado slices or the fresh boiled U-Peel-Um Shrimp. For desert, try the "I swear it is my Mississippi Grandma's recipe" banana pudding or one of the sinfully delicious homemade brownies or bars. The banana pudding was heavenly - crisp vanilla wafers surrounded by sweetened condensed milk prepared pudding and fresh sliced bananas. The Tugboat Annies were buttery pecan chocolate chip filled bars which flawlessly topped off our Zeke's fried food fiesta. While Zeke's may be known for their fried fish and chips you will be pleasantly surprised that the fried items are fresh and not too greasy. If you have never been to Zeke's or it has fallen off your radar screen I highly recommend you chart your course for Zeke's. read more

I love fish & chips, have eaten at hundreds if not thousands of fish & chips places, and this was hands down the best experience I have had yet. The quality of the fish itself was superb. The batter stayed crispy with malt vinegar, and it was also very flavourful. I absolutely loved this place, bought the shirt. I was in town for my grandmother's funeral, and having fish with my Dad was one of the ways we always bonded when I was growing up, so we decided to come here before my flight back to California. It was great. The waitress was really nice and we never had an empty glass on the table. The vinegar bottles and salt shakers on all the tables seemed perpetually full. It started out badly with very poor service, a long wait for my food and it was not packed, If the food was great, I would not be writing this although it was absolutely terrible, and I am not exaggerating. I ordered Fried Oysters and a piece of fried Cod, the Oysters were very oily, burnt and get this ice cold inside! I complained asking if the cook was frying frozen Oysters which was obvious, and she said dismissively that it's a new Oyster and that must be the problem (What the ???) she asked if I want something different, so I said just get me a couple pieces of fried Cod... I tried to eat the Cod, but it was dripping with old burnt oil and was disgusting! I just got up and left my meal on the table and went down the street and got a Whataburger .... Zeke's is one of those restaurants that you grow up loving if you've been around for a while. It's simple food - fried fish, fried veggies, and sauces that make you want to dig in for more. So much so that you need a fried okra for eating your sauce. The lunch specials are my favorite. I always get a two piece fish with two sides. $9.99 Winning. The fish is always a good size and the texture stays juicy, firm and meaty. The breading is crispy and buttery. The color is a vibrant 'I've been fried perfectly' color. The vegetables are fresh and crunchy and served with an amazing creamy cucumber dill ranch. It's always nice to start the meal with the jalapeño hushpuppies. Service is always super friendly. The people in front of my husband took 20 minutes to order for 4 people; and it wasn't because they were slow-it was because they were asked what seemed a survey whilst ordering. (I'd like extra ice in my drink; OK sir, how much ice, halfway full, all the way full, crushed, cubed; I'd like extra tarter sauce, OK how much tater sauce? How many and how full do you want them each, etc...) No joke. For half the price you can go to Baker's Street down the road and get a HUGE order of some pretty awesome fish and chips, I think Flying Fish may have some as well. New to the area and so far, I am loving Fort Worth! I've never been much of a helper, but moving to a new city, just thought I'd start. The Cod was really good here along with the service and atmosphere. Really home-like cozy feel to this place. The food was hot all the way through to the last bite. I will return.
