If you read reviews from the past this place seems like a complete winner. I can assure you I would have written one of those same reviews as I enjoyed this place for the first two years I lived in Baltimore. Since, it has gone downhill faster than an avalanche. In my most recent (and final) time ordering from Zellas, I ordered to entrees of the Lasagna. It is a dish I had enjoyed many times before and expected the same. Wrong. Upon it being delivered (in a styrofoam container, different than usual) I began eating it and noticed that not only was it not fully cooked (noodles still hard) but that there was NO MEAT in the lasagna. I want to emphasize that I have never called to complain about food, and I have never sent an order or plate of food back to a kitchen in my 25 years of eating food. I sent this back, it was an abomination. I expressed my distaste to the manager and he assured me he was very sorry and that they were using 'another company' for their pre made lasagna and I immediately got irritated since I had also ordered an appetizer of hummus and pita for my roommate and the person who took my order informed me it might be slightly different as they were now making their own pita bread. Why wouldn't he have told me the same about the lasagna when I ordered that? I reordered a sandwich and a calzone and he said it would be out to me immediately. When they arrived the sandwich was dry and the calzone was completely dough in the middle. Uncooked. I went to bed HUNGRY. This is truly a crime. What was once my go-to for pizza and delicious sandwiches/pasta is now gone. The new management should cut their losses and set fire to this place for the insurance money. I had a horrible, horrible experience ordering for a large group from this place. After calling several times to get in touch with the manager who could decide whether they could handle a large catering order, the manager assured me that they could (she was mistaken). I made it explicitly clear that I needed the food to be there on time. I stressed that this is vital and they could not be late. I had a group of 100 people who were expecting lunch at a certain time and I needed the food to be there. It was supposed to be there no later than 11:45. That time came and passed. I called Zellas and got the voice mail. I called and called and finally got through to the woman manager who must have been avoiding my calls. 12:10...still no food 12:20 still no food....1225. FORTY MINUTES LATE. the guy shows up. I was pissed. The pizza was fine, certainly not gourmet just basic pizza. The driver didn't have an itemized receipt that I asked for. I had to drive to the pizza place later to get it. They said they couldn't give me it because they needed it for their records and the manager would email me a copy. She never did. Then I see the credit card charge online. They had over charged me by $25. I grumbled and called the manager who said she would figure out how this happened and get back to me in the next day. She never called back. I disputed the charge and got refunded. This place is horribly run and completely incompetent...too bad for them because they could have had a lot more business from UMD if they hadn't screwed this up so horribly. read more

This place used to be really great! The food was great- one of the best pizza pizza places I have been to. Their sandwiches were also realllly good (Talulah's and the meatball were my fav). What made this place the ultimate gem for me and all my neighbors were the prices! their prices were reasonable and they had really good deals. I ordered or ate at Zella's at least 1-2/week. Recently the place changed owners and it just seems to be be going down-hill. the service stinks, the food is getting to be ifffy. I hope the new owners get it together! Tried writing this email to Zella's, but the email listed on their website doesn't work. "We used to love Zella's but the last 2 times we have gone there, we have been severely disappointed. The service is terrible. It took over an hour for me to get a calzone when we were the only table in the whole restaurant. I had to go to the bar myself to get a refill on my drink after waiting 20 minutes with no one checking the table. We ordered a "large" pizza tonight that looked like the small pizza I used to get there. The crust made up most of the pizza, and the parts that we actually ate weren't anything special. We waited 15 minutes after calling in the order then went to pick it up, and had to wait an additional 30 minutes for the pizza to come out. We saw it sitting there in the box, ready to go, but the waitstaff was too busy chatting to notice it. We heard bad reviews about the new ownership but we thought they were just rumors. The update: I am hesitant to give Zella's even one star these days, and this is from a girl who used to be their biggest fan. I'm not sure why my coworker always wants to order from them, and even more mystified why I continue to go in on orders with him. To be fair, there have been plenty of times when I've said "no thanks, not today, I'm completely dissatisfied with them." A few weeks ago, we waited around three hours for an order. THREE HOURS. Zella's is just a few blocks away from work, but we're busy therapists and don't often have time to step away from our patients to use the bathroom let alone cross MLK to get over to Hollins Market to pick up food. That experience alone almost turned me off to Zella's forever, but my coworker/lunch buddy owed me a meal and needed to order enough for delivery, so I asked for a salad. With portabella mushrooms. Well, here I sit, still on hold, trying to tell someone, anyone, that my salad is sadly lacking in mushrooms. I'm not sure that a mushroom was ever even in the same room as this salad. As for the "bread" - wow. I used to look forward to the little foil wrapped package of amazing, yummy goodness, but even that has gone downhill. No, that's too kind, it just plain sucked, to be honest. Instead of two or three pieces of warm, chewy, delicious bread, I got one little wedge of something that may have been warm a few hours ago. You know how when you leave a pizza out overnight the crust is tough and tasteless by morning? Even that makes for a much better culinary experience than whatever the thing was that showed up with my salad. In my five years here in Baltimore, I've gone from "omg Zellas! Seems like piling on, but this place has crashed and burned. I ran into the owner one day in Little Italy (buying fresh pasta) and she told me she had sold the business. What a shame. Zellas was right there with Iggies and Isabellas for best pizza in Baltimore. It was designed to be similar to some of the boutique pizza shops in New Orleans. But not one to give up, we tried it anyway. As virtually everyone has said, the pizza in no way resembles the pie that the previous owners clearly took great pride in producing. The pizza was bland, with ingredients that were obviously cheaper, and the service was non existent. Stay away, the neighborhood is scary enough, and now there is no reason to venture into that area. I have lived in Hollins Market since August and have wanted to try this place. I heard at the association meeting that the original owners were back and decided to head over for a late lunch with my boyfriend. Since it was late in the afternoon, we were the only ones there. The space is very nice: hard wood floors, big windows, exposed brick. One of the owners was there and very friendly. We ordered the hummus and a small portabella mushroom pizza. The hummus was very good. The portion size was perfect. The vegtables on the pizza were nice and fresh. The crust was delish! The total bill was $21- not bad at all. They are getting their liquor license soon which will definitely make it a nice place to get a drink and dinner. read more

Got a small with extra cheese and seems like they actually put the extra cheese on, unlike I suspect many other orders I've had. Wings were decent. There was no soaks flappy chicken skin, thank you!! Just as everyone else has mentioned now that Zella's is back under original ownership it's starting to feel like Zella's again! I've been a few times since Julie has been back and the food is right on point and the service is fabulous! I can't wait to make Zella's one of my favorite spots to hang out again! Last time I was there I ordered the Portabella Mushroom sandwich, it's on ciabatta bread with a tangy sun dried tomato mayo, big Portabella mushrooms, spinach and mozzarella l, served with the great potato wedges! However there salads, pizzas and calzones are great as well! So happy to have Zella's back that I am willing to drive across town for it! read more

Zella's is a great spot if you want something substantial for lunch. It is across the street from Hollin's Market, which also has great lunch vendors as well - including my favorite salad spot. They do deliver if you find yourself on the west side. I usually call ahead for pick up, but on this day, I popped in and had my sammich in under 10 minutes. The slogan - which is a little hard to read on the door - is clever: "a pizza worth raven about". It's true - they make great pizza. I went with one of their sandwiches: the "Druidzilla's Chicken". The bread is similar to a pizza crust - kind of soft with a perfect amount of crisp crunch. They take fresh grilled chicken breast chunks and smother it with mozzarella cheese. The sandwich is then topped with roasted red peppers, raw red onions. Then they add a little tomato sauce that has a slight spicy kick. Lastly, the sandwich is dressed with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. (I honestly should pay more attention, because I probably could have done without the mayo.) Each of their sandwiches are served with fries. I knew I was travelling, so I went with a side salad, plus, I love their house dressing - a creamy lemon thyme. The Zella's side salad is mixed baby greens, sliced tomatoes, red onions, and artichokes. The best part is that they serve it with two slices of of garlic bread - which is basically pizza without the red sauce. My favorite! This is so much food. I couldn't finish it; I gave my other half the sandwich away. And, even with a nice tip - It was only $10. read more

Apparently their claim to fame is winning the best pizza in Baltimore title. 6 years ago. Um yeah...2007 was a LONG time ago. Time to stop living on past glory. Probably some of the worst pizza I've ever eaten. It tasted like pizza you'd by at a major sporting event. It was so greasy that I placed a mountain of napkins on top of the pizza before taking a bite just to soak up some of the excess grease. I literally eat here at least once a week and I NEVER leave disappointed. From their baked wings to their mouth-watering portabello mushroom pizza, there's something for everyone here. My favorites: - Portabello Mushroom Pizza (perfect amount of feta cheese and the most delightful combination of roasted veggies) - Garlic/Old bay chicken wings (you can mix the sauces together) - Resurrection beer (Brewer's Art) - Kloby's stout (this will get you drunk) The dining area here is casual enough to come in for a drink at the bar by yourself or come with a group to eat and play board games. I'd never been here during the "original" tenure of the owners, and when this place did come to our attention, it was going through an obvious rough period where we just plain weren't interested. However, Zella's came up as an option on GrubHub, and we didn't want to cook tonight due to our kitchen being nearly as cold as the outside temperature; so we decided to look it up here and see if it had improved any. With all of the recent reviews celebrating the original owners' return, we said "what the hell" and ordered. We both ordered something called "Druidzilla's Chicken" sandwiches. The menu describes it as grilled chicken breast, mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers, red onion, tomato sauce with lettuce and mayo. To be honest, I didn't expect much - but what we received was a delightful surprise, two sandwiches as big as our faces. It came with a small side of what was termed "Mediterranean fries" (but they just tasted like regular potato wedges to me, not that this is a bad thing). That was probably the best-tasting chicken sandwich I've had in a long time. The bread had a pleasant "tug" to it, and tasted like it came from the bakery, almost like a good pizza crust from a shop in Brooklyn, New York. (I can't explain why bread would taste like that, it just... did.) The mozzarella was fresh and creamy - no shredded crap here. And the chicken wasn't just some flat-tasting filet, but big CHUNKS of good, juicy grilled chicken. The tomato sauce was tart and tangy and really, really good. We were pleasantly surprised, both Sweet Husband Mine and I, and it was only a twenty-spot for two big, juicy sandwiches delivered to our door on a freezing night. That alone was worth it! Zella's is only a mile from our house, but we'd never known they delivered to us. We know now and will take full advantage of it. I intend to try their portabella mushroom sandwich next. Or their pizza. Or their pasta dishes. I don't know for sure, but I will definitely be back to try it all. P.S. We were fighting over the remains of the second sandwich. He won. I am from New Jersey and still crave pizza after living in Baltimore for 3 years. I ordered from Zella's after reading the Yelp reviews, and opted for delivery because of the snow. The online ordering was great, they delivered right on time as promised and I really enjoyed the pizza - I got a "make your own" with prosciutto, mozzerella & ricotta (nom) and the sicilian (which is a little out of the box for me, I don't love olives but I didn't mind them because they worked well in this particular topping combination. Most notably, the men who delivered came through the snow, up the steps and right to my door with a smile on his face. He even said that they will be open tonight in case we need anything else. That is really great service - anyone who is still smiling after delivering pizza's in this snowstorm deserves some kudos. Original owners are back!! The pizza is delicious! I love "making your own" pizza and adding their gourmet toppings. Online ordering is super easy and they arrive easily within the given time frame. This time, I ordered a Make Your Own pizza. Half was fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, and some ricotta...DELICIOUS! I wish I had ordered the whole thing that way :) Their herbed breadsticks are a little crunchy on the outside and super soft inside. Zella's ranks among the likes of Homeslyce, Isabella's, and other great Baltimore pizza joints that specialize in medium thickness crust. If you've ever thought of going on the Atkins diet, please drop everything now and head straight to Zella's. Their amazing and irresistible crust will lure you in and tantalize your tastebuds, make you wonder why you ever foolishly entertained the idea of giving up carbs in the first place, and will spare you from weeks and months of carb-starved despair. I've tried four different pizzas: 1) Pizza Prosciutto: full of flavor. I loved the touch of fresh arugula sprigs on top. A bit too salty for me, however. 2) Chicken Pesto: This is my favorite! It's not too salty, and the pesto sauce is delicious. 3) Portabella Mushroom: Soggy and not as flavorful. I love mushrooms, but I found this pizza rather forgettable. 4) Margarita: just your standard Margarita pizza. It was good (after all, how can you argue with the combo of fresh tomatoes + basil + mozzarella?), but it didn't seem like anything special. My advice is to stick to the meat-based pizzas, and you'll be in for a treat. Vegetarians, I apologize. Location-wise, Zella's is located near Hollins Market in a more gritty area of Baltimore that might catch the casual Mt. Vernonite off-guard, but the neighborhood really isn't as rough as it might appear. It may not be the most pleasant destination to trek to by foot, but with ample street parking nearby, it's worth the drive. When you step inside, you'll notice the comfortable warmly-lit ambiance of exposed brick walls displaying small framed pictures, the high-top bar with stools, a few small TVs, and ~6 beers on tap. Other seating options include a few large tables for large groups and some smaller 4-person tables. Zella's is an amazing gem in the Hollins Market neighborhood, and I hope to see many other great restaurant destinations pop up nearby! Now that Jim and Julie are back, things are Zella's have been restored! The food is awesome (the dough is so delicious) and the service is much, much better. My favorites are the spinach and artichoke, chicken pesto, and spicy chicken. I also like to customize my pizza with BBQ sauce, chicken, pineapple and carmelized onions. SO fabulous! You must try it!! Zella's space is also quite beautiful and they have artwork on display all the time. Definitely a good place for groups but it's good to call ahead of time to give the staff a heads up. read more

I love Zella's. This may be our favorite pizza place in the city. Their pies host a delicious combination of tastes, and each one we have tried has been great. I recommend the portobella and the spinach artichoke. They're not shy about using things like caramelized onions or goat cheese, but even the traditional toppings are top notch. It's very reasonably priced, too. The balance of sauce to dough is nice - it's not a super saucy pizza and the bread is chewy with crispness on the outside. It's not coated in a jacket of oily cheese, either. Try it - in, delivery, whatever. If you're craving Domino's, this isn't your joint, but for serious pizza eaters, you owe yourself a taste. read more

Toppings = amazing, and they don't skimp Calzones = massive Sammiches = delicious Salads = I could probably make these at home, but it makes me feel better that I'm eating green, leafy things with carbs, beer, and chocolate cake. Nice small town bar with a homely feel. Bartender was great and very familiar with my friends (they are regulars). We went during lunch I had the druidzilla panini. Delicious! The reviews are in fact correct. Zella's used to be pretty good however now they really don't seem to know what they are doing. Recently I went to Zella's with one other person at about 5:00 PM on a Saturday. We were the only customers in the restaurant. We ordered two small pizzas and a beer. After about 45 minutes we still hadn't gotten any food. When we asked what was up they told us that they were waiting for the delivery truck to come in that had the fresh mozzarella they needed to make for one of our pizzas and that they were waiting to make both until the delivery truck arrived...to me this makes no sense. A proper restaurant would inform the customer that they were missing an ingredient or out of a menu item instead of just having them sit there wondering. Once they told us I just told them to use regular mozzarella - to speed up the process. In the meantime they did bring us an order of breadsticks on the house. These were the best breadsticks I've ever had. A+ there. This is the only thing that makes this a 2 star instead of 1 star review. Both of the pizzas were tasty as well once they came. All in all we were there for way too long though. I just have to say that they seem pretty inept at running a restaurant even though the food was decent. read more

Took advantage of one of the few warm days so far this year to venture from Federal Hill to Zella's and wasn't disappointed! Really good pizza (flavorful, medium-crust, tasty sauce, good quality toppings) and salad, followed by an excellent tiramisu. The service was friendly and the space was open and inviting. Don't be put off by the "gritty" "transitional" neighborhood -- there was plenty of parking nearby. Zella's is definitely worth the trip. Definitely in my list of Baltimore favorites. I did delivery ! My mouth was watering , I forgot the name of the pizza but it was sausage , cheese , pepperoni and pineapples. My delivery driver was earlier than expected but I was so happy. They told us 45 mins to an hour. As well I ordered ginger ale. I must say ! I am still highly pleased. I will probably dine in a few days to see the ambiance in the restaurant. To be fair, Zella's is the only pizza place that will deliver to my neighborhood, which is within easy walking distance to the restaurant itself, so I use it for both delivery and for sit-down service. Convenience aside, I love pizza and think it's Nature's perfect food, and I think that Zella's is one of the best places in town to get that perfect food. I've never been unhappy with the food or service whether in the restaurant itself or via delivery. The staff is congenial and the happy hours are terrific. If you've never been (any many people have not since the West Side is not considered to be a draw to food lovers), you owe it to yourself to go. read more
