It's so heartbreaking to see what used to be the gem spot of Laguna has turned into. I've known this cafe from when it opened three decades ago, and it's nothing like it used to be even though they've kept some of the original recipes. I was furious how my food from the buffet was thrown on the plate like a cheap smorgasbord with the deviled egg thrown face down on fruit and pasta all mashed together. A simple bowl of granola with fruit took so long that I had to go check twice what was going on and I wasn't the only one. Standing by the employee area I saw a busboy trying to cut bananas onto the cereal with a butter knife. In front of me rotting wood and crooked prints in the area that used to be the heart of the cafe. When I finally got my bowl, there was barely any fruit yet there were a few mushy strawberries. I'm so sad this is no longer my go-to spot in Laguna anymore. read more

We were drawn into this cute little cafe on a Sunday due to beautiful music. As we approached the cafe, a quartet was playing....it had a Jazz feel to it. Our plan was to catch a quick drink before the show, but with the beautiful music playing in the background we stayed a bit longer as I enjoyed a solid salty rosemary latte and my partner enjoyed a beer. Meanwhile fellow customers were enjoying dinner, dessert, drinks and more in this very relaxing environment on the patio. Apparently during summer weekends there is music Friday through Sunday! The Caesar salad with steak was very good. The steak was tender and cooked perfectly. The chilaquiles bowl was a miss. The salsa was on only one side of the bowl so it was a bit dry and tasteless. Terrible experience. I have been a Laguna local my whole life and never been treated rudely by any restaurant staff except here. I got an omelette that stated it had bacon, cheese, and avocado but there was barely any avocado on it. When I asked to have more they said it was just a topping but it DOES NOT state that on the menu. There was an immense amount of bacon in it and I would have liked a little more avocado than just a slice to contrast the bacon. They were very rude about it too and when I asked for a splash more of oat milk to my coffee the worker rolled his eyes at me and said " we don't do that". At the time we were there, there were these great live musicians as well, which was awesome to listen to while enjoying our drinks. The strawberry matcha was pleasantly sweet with a nice rich taste. I'm not a fan of cold brew or coffee in general, but even I could tell the quality of the coffee. Also, shoutout to the great waitstaff - they were so friendly and attentive and helped us with every request we had regarding straws and napkins. We stopped in to have lunch the other day and was not sure what to expect. I ordered the cheeseburger with mushrooms and gruyere cheese, and it was literally the best burger I've ever had. If you don't know, this little café was originally a hangout for artists and writers of all types in the 90s. That's when I started going with my friend Nikki and we spent hours there concocting up our artistic dreams. The food is really great and the service has always been wonderful. I also just love the patio. During Covid, they added a side patio as well, which makes it a little bit more convenient but less quaint. Be aware that the menu has always been mostly vegetarian. They have a salad bar that people were making plates with. I believe sold by the weight. We ordered a toast with eggs and a Mediterranean breakfast. Both very small and not filling at all. I have to say, I have been coming to Zinc for over 4 years. Our company is down the street, witnessing the changes of ownership, menu and staff. I have seen a substantial decline in management and cold bar staff which I used to love all the staff and I do enjoy a few there that are bussing, like Enrique! Recently, I have found every time I have requested an egg white protein that the price fluctuates each time and sometimes being told they cannot do that or they charge an irrational amount of money. They don't seem to know how to update the POS system and seems like quality of customer service has been negatively impacting my love for Zinc, resulting in finding myself and our office heading to Anastasia or other spots in downtown. My personal opinion, if the owner actively checks the yelp, that they have a revisit and focusing on the customer service side and refining some of their dishes. We are locals and hate to see Zinc decline.. read more

French toast finally finally arrived! But now my friend was missing her soup! GM trying to find her ticket and interestingly enough my friend placed the order with her! I asked the GM to please just bring the soup out ( as her investigation into the ticket was taking forever) so she could eat with us and look for the ticket after. She got disgruntled and said she would bring the soup but could get fired or loose her job. Very unprofessional reaction from a GM! I've been a loyal patron of zinc for the last 15 years and I realize it's sold a couple years ago but this particular trip ( we are native Laguna Beach, but live currently in Colorado) i've had two experiences with old rotten avocado on the avocado toast and twice now - hot food delivered cold. I know there's a new manager who means well and I've even asked her what's going on. --I can tell it's shifted as it's not ever as busy as it always was and now they've added meat which I'm not opposed to, but something just feels off.
