As my road trip continues, I find myself in Napa. Good old Yelp search attracted me to Zuzu. At first glance this is the style/type of dining that is truly my favorite. Very artisinal ingredients served in small portions (tapas) with virtually everything on the menu originating from within a 50 mile radius of the restaurant. Enough of that, what sealed the deal for me was the lamb chops, I started with the flounder ceviche. Served with citrus marinated flounder, jicama and avocado. I've decided ceviche is like tacos or pizza. There's hundreds of types and styles. I thought the ceviche could have used a touch of heat (diced serrano) but the citrus marinade was nice and the jicama was a nice textural contrast. The lamb chops, cooked to a perfect medium rare and served with a Mongolian BBQ sauce glaze. I would have liked them to be served a little quicker off the grill while still hot. Next, Asian pear salad with pepiptas (pumpkin seeds) chicory, candied bacon, micro greens and a house sherry vinegarette. This may have been the favorite of the meal, one of the best salads ever and I'm not a "salad" person. Finally, the Andalusia Pot de creme. We went to Zuzu off of several recommendations praising it for its paella and Tapas. We got seated right away on a Wednesday night and we're met by a hostess and our server. Our server appeared as if he he was disinterested in us as customers. We didn't like the taste of the olive oil with the bread served. It tasted stale. So we asked for butter. Ten minutes we had to ask again and then were told we would be charged for butter. We ordered family style two tapas and a paella. We felt like the server judged us the minute we sat down. A family friend recommended us to try out Zuzu on our Napa trip, and we were so glad we followed their recommendation! My family and I visited on a Saturday night and were told the wait would be around an hour for a party of 4. It was a long wait, but we expected it since we heard this place was popular (Note: they don't take same day reservations.). We strolled around the nearby area and were eventually seated just under an hour later. We ordered quite a few tapas: flounder ceviche, gambas al ajillo, Tunisian brik pastry, black paella, brussels sprouts, pork cheek + tongue, and mussels + polenta dish (forgot the exact name). We thoroughly enjoyed ALL of these dishes, and we were definitely full by the end. Our favorites were the black paella (which had so much seafood!), gambas al ajillo, and Tunisian brik pastry. Note that the black paella takes around 30 minutes to make, so make sure to order that first! The service was extremely nice and attentive! Our server kept checking up on us and were friendly and receptive when we asked for bread refills. Had a Fantastic experience here on Friday evening! I studied in Barcelona, Spain for a summer in college and immediately fell in love with tapas! This restaurant exceeded my expectations and was exceptional in their service and food. Hats off to the entire staff. Waited about 25 minutes for a table. What I appreciated was that the sweet host checked in with us 5 minutes out and said our table was going to be ready soon. I'm glad they gave us a regular chair table instead of the high chair tables as I was wearing a dress. Thank you for the attention to detail :) Our server was absolutely amazing. She took care of us from start to end with ease. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria. A lil on the sweeter side but I didn't mind. We ordered the paella del dia, gambas (shrimp), flat iron steak (must get!), tunisian pastry (stuffed crab), bacalao (salt cod). Everything was SO DELICIOUS! I would order all of these items again. Perfect for a late night dinner! I love the idea of tapas because it gives you the opportunity to have more diversity in your meal. I hands down would eat their ceviche gladly for the rest of my life - it was perfectly limed, which I feel means something with ceviche. I thought the flank steak with chimichurri was excellent and very flavorful. I can't say the chicken croquettes were my thing, but I do think they are worth trying. I also really loved the fried manchego; I think it opened up a new appreciation for cheese within my palette that I thought that I had already mapped out pretty well before. The space is fun and fitting to the Spanish theme; the music is riveting, and the staff is attentive. Would return! This review is long overdue. It's the best place in downtown Napa to enjoy a glass of sangria and enjoy some Spanish tapas when visiting. I like sitting at the bar and talking to people. If you like pork belly, order it right away, as it may take 10-15 minutes. The boquerones is a must-have, thanks to Tracey A. for introducing it to me! I've had their paella at a winery event before, and needless to say, it's amazing! If you want to have a few bites (depending on how hungry you are) before an event nearby, come and kick it here. There's always room at the bar with warm hospitality. Great dining experience for any occasion. I almost want to come here for Valentine's Day, if only my husband wasn't so picky. We had a group of 6 for dinner last Saturday night and we had a great experience. The drink menu is super fun and we were all happy with the what we received. There are so many great food options in Napa that I'm sorry to say this one shouldn't be on your list :/ I'll start by saying service was great, we were seated outside and checked on frequently. We ordered quite a bit of food starting with the papas, gulf Shrimp, shrimp ceviche, flat iron steak, grilled lamb chops, black paella, and croquettes. The paella was the most disappointing. It was so flavorless. There was not one speck of seasoning on any of the seafood, the mussels were not cleaned well and still had their byssal threads attached, the daily fish which was flounder was undercooked, we took two bites and let them take it away (they didn't ask if we enjoyed or if there was a reason we didn't eat it). The lamb and the flat iron steak were the only two we enjoyed. 3 stars because our server was really sweet, if it were just for food it would be 2 stars read more

Food: excellent Service: poor Food was outstanding. My group of 5 ordered most of the menu. I particularly enjoyed the anchovy appetizer and the paellas. However we had an absolutely terrible waitress. I do think this is probably not typical but wanted to explain my horrible situation. I have a mild peanut allergy (which I didn't disclose so I do take some blame I understand) however this has never been a problem in the past since the menu always states if the dish has peanuts. It is a really common allergy. Anyways, after the chocolate pot de crème dessert I had a mild reaction in my throat. I asked the waitress if there were peanuts. She said Yes there is peanut butter in it - to which I immediately took Benadryl despite also drinking alcohol during dinner, and it is definitely not a good idea to mix the two. I expressed my frustration at the menu not mentioning peanuts and the waitress got super defensive. Luckily she sent the manager over and he explained that it in fact did NOT have peanuts but only processed in a facility that uses them. Had I known that, I would know the reaction would very likely not be much of an issue and I could've avoided taking the Benadryl. The rest of the evening I passed out and missed precious time with my family. I can't believe the waitress gave false information that was crucial to my well being. To add insult to injury we ordered a pitcher of sangria that was delivered in 5 equal glasses (also full of ice) when we intended to have each person choose how much they wanted to drink since we all had different preferences. Additionally, the awful waitress did not advise us on how much food would be good for our group so we ended up having to order twice and the paella takes 40min to prepare. When I told my friends about this fiasco they asked if they comp'd the meal. I laughed. The manager said he just took off the one dessert and I feel like he expected me to be grateful. Absolutely not. All in all, it was a great meal but I will not be returning to a place that does not value their customer's health. Some people have severe peanut allergies and need to go to the ER if they accidentally have any. We had the: -Tunisian Brik: Pastry stuffed with Dungeness crab, organic eggs and green onions It was really delicious for what it was. The pastry was crispy like a wonton and light, not greasy. It was filled with a lump of crab meat , green oniond and over easy egg that oozed out warm yoke. Topped with a red suace that had a hint of heat. -Gambas al Ajillo: fresh Gulf shrimp with garlic Pequin chili and smoky pimenton. Only 3 small prawns for $13? And there wasn't much flavor to the broth it was in. It was lack luster and a disappointment. I am rating this place a 3 stars. They just didn't give much chips to go with it especially knowing I had two kids with me. The paella was a small portion compared to what I have had in the past I think it can feed 2 people. The champagne I ordered was flat seemed like an old bottle like they opened the bottle already. I probably would only come back if I lived in the area and was craving paella. Good Spanish tapas style dishes in a cozy setting. The place is small with a bar and about 6 small tables downstairs, and about 6 tables upstairs. They don't take reservations and usually fill up by 7 pm. Prices are reasonable. We got a variety of dishes. Most were very good. A couple we thought we're ok. Our favorites were the: Squid Ceviche served with julienne of papaya in a spicy coconut citrus sauce. Cold and refreshing dish with just enough spiciness to get your attention but not overly hot. The quid was very tender. The Jamon Platter : A variety of Spanish hams served with tomato toast. The Paella Negro - Squid, fish, shrimp, clams, mussels on a bed of squid ink rice. Great flavor on the squid ink rice. Wish there was a bit more crust on the rice. The two dishes we thought were just ok: The Pork Cheeks & Tongue - Quite rich. It needed some kind of acid to cut through the fat. The Skirt Steak in a Jalapeño Chimichurri sauce. The steak was tender but the sauce lacked flavor. If you're a tapas aficionado, this is definitely a hip and happening spot to try in Napa! But be prepared to wait for a table, up to 2 hours on a Saturday evening! Fortunately they have a sister restaurant (La Taberna) 2 doors down you can go have a starter app and drink while waiting to get in, and it's great they'll come get you when your table is ready. Food at La Taberna is very good, especially the fresh fried potatoes. They have very similar Spanish themed small plate dishes like ZuZu. So by the time we got in, we weren't as hungry, but did order some excellent plates, including their sliced Flat-Iron steak cooked to perfection, large sea scallops that are fabulous and tender, flavorful Brussels sprouts and a Queso Frito fried cheese plate. These were all wonderful for sharing among the group if you like the idea of not having your own dinner plate. Finally, the tres leches cake was spectacular, perfectly moist and tasty but not too sweet, and also shared the chocolate "cup" that was rich and delicious! It's Whacky! Hostess was mid and waiter was lost. Had a reservation for two and arrived 15 minutes early. She was unable to locate a table for us even though multiple tables inside were unused. We were then offered a seat at the bar where there were no open seats, or sit outside on the 8 open tables. With it already being uncomfortable, we sat down by the heater and hoped for the best. Waiter took a while to stop by and to start off the conversation he was very uncertain about what was going on and like he had woken up from a nap in never-never land!
