This Pizza store has been holding it down in Tribeca since the dollar-slice era, and I respect the survival instinct. Once upon a time, this was the spot. Now? It's more of a memory museum that sells pizza. For $1.50, you get a fast, hot(ish) slice if you ask nicely and by nicely, I mean insist. Eat it immediately or it mutates into a cold, sad rectangle. Reheating is not recommended unless you enjoy culinary horror. The ambience is pure NYC subway energy: some days it's quiet and chill, two or three people inside. Other days it's packed like rush hour, a line of folks from all over the world waiting like it's a transit platform. Total luck of the draw. Stick to the plain slice. The toppings look like they've been through inflation personally. I come back once every six months hoping for a comeback tour... still waiting. A nice warm .99 cent slice on a cold winter night is always a good call. I was walking by on my way to Little Italy to pick up a box of pastries and could not resist dropping in to get a slice. Not a bad pizza, more soft and doughy for my taste as I prefer a crisper bottom on my pizza. Still, pretty tasty overall. They have a nice deal here too - two slices and a can of soda or water for $2.75. Cheese pie for $8, and a bunch others for only $10. Pretty cheap for a full pie. Cash only and there is an ATM in here if you want to pay the ridiculous fee. Was staying nearby and figured I'd give this place a shot before I left town. I needed to get a flight outta town and I knew the options at the airport would be overpriced and stink so I got on line and got four hot slices right out of the over for an unbelievable $4. Yup four bucks. After adding some dry chili flakes and garlic powder I brought the slices to my hotel and had a solid meal before the flight. Decent pizza at an unbelievable price. I was craving a single slice after sipping some suds nearby with buddies. I popped into 99 Cent on a Monday night, and it was pretty dead as expected. I ordered a slice of the only pie they had, a plain cheese. I don't hate a plain cheese by any means, but a pepperoni option would've been much appreciated. Anyways, the slice came out quickly on a paper plate as it should. The napkins were the classic New York razor thin sheets of paper that are good for one wipe of grease out of the beard before disintegrating into the atmosphere. As for the slice, it was crisp with minimal flop and had nice overall flavor. The shop offered oregano and other free seasonings to spruce up your slice. This pizza was definitely a good value. The server was very friendly and gave me a squirt of hand sanitizer on the house. I definitely will be back with my sights on something other than plain cheese. read more
