About a month ago five of us went to this restaurant after it opened under new ownership. Yes, most of us got the happy hour menu. I was not impressed. I had the oysters that were horrible. They were overpowered by wet spinach and one tiny piece of burnt bacon. No flavor whatsoever. A few got scallop chips which were basically fried. They were like some kind of potato chip... and I still don't get it. It took all of the mayonnaise sauce to make them edible. We went to the old 1776 House last fall... there is no comparison. Not sure if we will ever go back. I hear that Rare in Lewes is much better. read more

We waited quite a while before he came to table, and over all he was very brusk and nattentive and - we had to ask for bread basket 3 times. This was a birthday dinner and while we saw other waitstaff being very attentive (bread baskets with appetizers, and complimentary drinks being served for anniversary and birthday) there was no acknowledgement of our table birthday. Most disappointing was when we spoke with a manager. We complimented the food and then explained what transpired. His response..first he argued we reserved on open table so they wouldn't know there was a birthday, at which time my husband interjected that he told the waiter there was a birthday at the table. The managers response was sorry, enjoy your birthday. He did nothing to see how he could mitigate the situation, inquire as which waiter. Very disappointing . If you've been to Hausners in Baltimore or Sunset in Glen Burnie you'll love this place. Tried and true meals that are marvelous. The Prime rib melted in your mouth and the Filet Mignon was a hit with the crab meat on it. The vegetables were cooked the way we like them and mashed potatoes weren't dry but very flavorful. At $129.00 for the meal and 2 Irish coffees well worth it and i recommend this as a must go to spot. Parking can be tricky when a lot of people are at the movie theater next door but there are a lot of spots to park in. read more

I'll start by saying the food quality and preparation were excellent. As was the piano music. The EXTREMELY slow service however put a damper on the evening. Luckily we got drinks ahead of time at the bar and took them to our table as it took our server 30 minutes to even bring us water which we asked for as soon as we were seated. She was pleasant but NOT attentive. Our wine order also took another 30 minutes to arrive, no bread was served, nor did we have steak knives for our meat. She knew we were celebrating birthdays but no dessert was offered until we inquired. Not an experience one would expect at this price point. We were there yesterday for the prix fixed dinner. It was our first visit since the reopening and it was amazing. I could not believe how many people were there for dinner at such an early hour. The bar was full. The new restaurant has a very intimate vibe, low lit with comfortable seats. It was also easy to hear even with a full house. The food was exceptional. I had the scallop chips for an appetizer and was very pleased. The filet medallions au poivre and the mashed potatoes were delicious too . For desert I had the cherry amaretto ice cream. Everything was delicious. I cant wait to go back again. Also and very important was the service which was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. He was busy but he made us feel like we were his priority. I cannot say enough good things! Except the price for this experience was only $35. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but when you walk inside, you would have absolutely no idea you're actually in a strip-mall. Retro-upscale-colonial steakhouse vibes, with a piano, and service is excellent, attentive, and polite. This is, without question, THE "go to" steakhouse in the Lewes/Rehoboth area, and for good reason. Strangely, every time we go, I end up ordering lobster, which is cooked *perfectly*, and topped with plenty of fresh lump crab. Freshly shucked oysters are a good start - very fresh. If you're not into eating them raw, the Rockefeller are excellent as well. Reservations are absolutely required - you will NOT be able get a table just walking in, no matter when you go, so don't even try - you'll be turned away at the door. read more

My husband and I drive by 1776 all the time. I was initially thrown off by a supposed fine dining establishment in a strip mall. We finally put that to the side decided to try them out. Big mistake! I should have trusted my instincts. Don't get me wrong as soon as you walk through those doors- it looks great. They did an applaudable job on the redesign but thats where the oohs and ahhs end promptly in my experience. As soon as we were seated, we were forgotten, and this was when they first opened so not busy at all just yet. As we sat starring around our waitress finally stopped as if WE rushed her over and hurried us through our drink order. Meanwhile the table next to us was seated maybe 15 minutes after us, and their server informed them of specials and the happy hour menu. And like magic their drinks appeared, whereas ours would take another 15 minutes to arrive. We saw table after table receive drinks from the bar and we had yet to receive water let alone the cocktails we ordered. Fast forward our appetizers arrive and they are cold. I have been to several high end steakhouses that serve Nueske's bacon as an app. What we received was cold run of the mill strip bacon dressed in a ton of coverup sauce. On to dinner. My husband said his ribeye was decent. My filet with the lobster and bearnaise add-on was pretty flavorless. The mac and cheese could have definitely stayed in the kitchen. But I write all of this right now as I fight day 2 of food poising from this establishment. Never again. And I do mean never. read more

We were very excited to try the new 1776! The ambience and piano music were the best part of dinner. The waitress was like someone you would have in a diner. She rushed us through ordering and barely came to check on us. The seafood tower peesentation was sub par but taste was good - too much crabmeat and not enough oysters. Clams were briny and tiny. Our steaks came and were warm .one was raw and not medium rare so we returned it. The man at the table next to us also returned his steak, as it was undercooked. We had a weird situation where a manager accidentally delivered another drink to us and mumbled something incoherent. We explained it wasnt ours but he just left it. Then the waitress came over and said "did youtouch the drink ", it wasnt meant for you" (it was meant for the guy next to us) Then she left it there anyway. The manager should have came over to both tables and offered something, as there were mistaken drinks and undercooked steaks. After trying for a month to get into 1776, we were not impressed. They did a great job with the makeover, however the food was just average. The ravioli appitizer was the best part of the meal. My wife's sea bass was burnt on the underside and dry and the sticky rice was bland. Our friends medillions were over seasoned as my filet was just average. Service was slow as our server had tables clear on the other side of the restaurant as the staff is not working as a team like the old 1776. Deserts are homemade and average, again, nothing like before. Apparently the restaurant was better off under the old management. I ordered the prime rib, medium, expecting them to just cut it off the end of the roast where it's more cooked. Nope, they threw it on the grill like a steak and charred it around the edges. The cut was very thin for prime rib. I never send food back but I had to send this back and when the second one came out it was not much better. Sides were cold and green beans undercooked. My wife ordered the filet mignon and hers was overcooked too. Waitress comped my dinner. Let me begin by saying that the meal and service experience were less than expected and the staff comped part of our meal. Last night, we we had dinner at the restaurant and were looking forward to experiencing the renovation and the revised menu. The NOLA oysters appeared to be simple cheese melted over oysters. They had no char or seasoning on them. I actually found them very unpleasant. The tuna tartare was minced tuna with olive oil and capers. No flare and no crostini - very plain and boring. We didn't receive our salad before the entree. The ribeye and baked potato were well prepared, but again the green beans offered nothing extra. The prime rib was supposed to be medium rare but was served rare and was not well presented. The sweet potatoes brûlée were hard as they were not baked completely. The creamed spinach was a bit soupy. We returned the prime rib meal. The Caesar salad was served and was very good. I don't think we will be returning anytime soon. read more

This week was our first visit to the "new" 1776. They have done a beautiful job on the improvements and the food was delicious. The onion soup was like no other I have ever had. And the Bone in Ribeye was a perfect medium rare. Service was attentive and accurate. I was not disappointed. However, I have two concerns about the restaurant that should be addressed. I stumbled in the same area going in and out of the dining room. It appears that the original transition strip that use to separate the bar from the dining room may have been carpeted over. This left an invisible transition that could be dangerous to others. The second is the noise level inside that has been addressed by numerous reviews on virtually every site. I will only add that my party of four could not communicate with each other until the Happy Hour guests left. And then the unbearable noise level returned as the restaurant began to refill. There has to be an acoustical solution. I would love to return but will wait until these issues are remedied. read more

This was one of my staple restaurants in the area but like many others in the area they start slipping and in my opinion this is one. Steak for my wife was good . My kids food was garbage cheese burger burned big time and the others chicken was flavorless . My steak was ok but I gave it to my kids when I got home. You see I didn't have room to eat at my two person McDonalds booth . Two kids and two adults at a two person size McDonald booth. The manager actually came over when we were pretty much done and asks if we wanted smaller plates. Sleep on that one. I asked the lazy blonde twit hostesses that kept blaming my wife for the online mistake instead of just giving us a table that was empty from the time we walked in and paid our bill. The floor is a bit uneven and with all of the bustling servers the atmosphere was a little crowded when moving around the restaurant so I think that detracted a bit... My wife and I have gone to 1776 for a few years now for special occasions and when we just wanted some excellent prime rib and fresh seafood Our daughter (who is kinda picky) loves the prime rib, savory smashed potatoes and broiled lobster tails! One relatively new of our favorite starters is the Scallop Chips but the Oysters Rockefeller have always been consistently fabulous as well! These perfectly golden fried fresh scallops with the horseradish cream are freakin' amazing! The Caesar Salad is great to boot and simply a classic treat with a spiky fresh dressing (anchovies optional - but for an up charge?). I have to say tho', the Wedge Salad is over the top as well. Desserts are what you'd expect from a very well run, high-end steakhouse. The Key Lime Pie is sublime but the Banana Cream Pie (to die for IMHO!) and Crème Brûlée are also top notch. Add a Irish Coffee and you are all set. Pre dinner for a concert in Selbyville, Delaware, on Wednesday July 10. Arrived at the restaurant at the reserved opening at 4 pm. Was warmly greeted by the hostess who seated us promptly, with menus and a wine list. Was greeted by the best and most professional wait service I have experienced in a long time. A petite, brunette young lady, who was extremely knowledgeable about all the aspects of this restaurant, especially while we viewed the steaks available to us. So sorry I can't remember her name, my brother had also forgotten. Her service was so special we left upward of a 30 percent tip. I ordered the barrel cut steak, Pittsburgh, medium rare, as the young lady advised me how to have it cooked for this feature, and it was cooked perfectly. My brother ordered the tomahawk rib, also cooked perfectly, and remarked when it arrived, that it was huge, and he might not finish. He found the steak so delicious, he did. Good wine and drink list, at comparable steakhouse prices. The atmosphere is a welcoming early American, colonial theme. If I lived closer to this place, located just north of Rehoboth beach on the northbound side of route 1, I would definitely be a regular they would know by name. Tom read more

Then I broke stride at a steakhouse and ordered Scallops. The fried mashed sweet potato intrigued me. I was not disappointed. First the scallops were 100% dead on. And the spinach did what it was supposed to do. Then the sweet potatoes (flash fried, them smashed) blew this away! First off, the service from our waiter, John, was excellent. He was very busy with multiple tables and still took very good care of us. It was our 50 th Anniversary dinner and thought it would be a nice quiet dinner. Not, very noisy, crowded experience. The steaks, she had the filet trio and I had the " cowgirl" tomahawk ribeye. Both ordered medium rare, both over done, probably because they were pretty thin, especially for $55 steaks. The most annoying part was the owner hovering around all the tables making you feel you were eating to slow. We were there 1 hour 15 minutes from sit down to paying our bill. Sure didn't feel like fine dining experience. This place is no Ruth Chris for sure. read more

We spent an afternoon without reservation at 1776 recently, and we were impressed. Not mentioned this location is next to movie theater , you can watch movie first or have dinner at 1776. Our waitress was very pleasant, friendly, and knowledgeable about the restaurant's offerings. The runners bringing the food were equally pleasant. The bread is soft, the bone in Newyork steak dry aged 44 days is chewy, redness, but the best is my lobster tail is $20.00 is so meaty, juicy, thick , worth it for the price, mixed salad substitute bacon and cheese for cherry tomatoes and onion. Especially atmosphere is lovely has all old pictures frames hang on the wall, the restroom is clean and fancy ..lol, light up when I walk inside. read more
