We visited 18 Oaks for a group dinner recently in a private room. We started outside for appetizers and drinks - which was nice if not a bit tight right outside the private room. The room itself was nice - with large wall wine racks and comfy seating. Staff was very accommodating, helping some with menu tweaks and quickly coming out with drinks and food. We had a set menu with a few options. We started with the cauliflower soup with lobster - which was so delicious. A bit rich and a good amount of lobster - I could have eaten a stockpot full of it. Next was a salad with blue cheese and bacon and nuts. Perfect amount of blue cheese (one of my favorites) - it was nicely done with a good accompaniment of toppings. For my entree, I had the salmon which was a tad salty but really great flavor and perfectly cooked. Asparagus, spinach and potatoes rounded out the dish. All were perfectly seasoned and delicious. I'm not sure how they got sick nice, large asparagus! Dessert was a pistachio cake with chocolate. Very good but at that point I was stuffed! Celebrated my anniversary at the resort and decided to try their steakhouse on sight! We were very pleased with not only the food but the service. Thank you Justin for being an amazing server! Everything was top notch quality. The house wedge salad was the best salad ever. The thick bacon slivers were out of this world. The main course was cooked to perfection and the potato purée was an pairing. They went above and beyond in making our dining experience memorable and surprised us with an anniversary vanilla creme brûlée. Came here for breakfast with Santa the week before Christmas with my family. We ate the brunch at Cibolo Moon before and anticipated a comparable, maybe even more elevated experience. The experience was just ok and the food was very lackluster given hard cold pastries, the typical liquid eggs served at every hotel, and some solidified sausage gravy. The only saving grace was some lox and crema to smear on a bagel. During this breakfast my wife and I discussed we hope the Christmas dinner that we made a reservation for already is better. We live close by and decided to not cook this Christmas, because as a chef I cook every holiday and this would be a treat to be able to relax and let someone else do the cooking/dishes. Christmas dinner: we both went for the special, a lobster risotto and the duck breast w/ port reduction. Sounds good right? I requested the duck be a mid rare. It came out mid to mid well and the skin was rubbery. When I told the waitress she said the cook said the skin was like that due to me request the temp be mid rare. Makes no sense. This is clearly an inexperienced chef not knowing how to properly cook duck breast. I next order half of a lobster tail... it was mushy, not seasoned and did not taste well. I did not eat it. My wife's risotto was too al dente and watery from a stock add at the end. Overall the service/servers were very nice, but the food is not worth coming to. I'll be cooking next year read more

We arrived at 3:30p and the very nice hostess explained they were full for reservations but did see an opening at 5:00p. She said all managers were in a meeting (she needed approval to enter into the system) but to return at 5p and we would be seated without issue. We returned at 4:45p and the other hostess rudely said: no, we are full and we don't have a reservation until 9:00p. We explained what we were told previously and that we had patiently waited but she did not budge. She did not even smile. We are hotel guests. The restaurant was empty because they don't even open until 5:00p. We did as we were told. When the hostess is the first face you see when you walk into any establishment, you should treat people with respect! read more

Whoever was the chef the night i went needs a lesson on the benefits of seasoning food with at a minimum salt and pepper. Come to this place for breakfast/brunch. Hands down the food is delicious. I would NOT recommend coming to this place for dinner. This restaurant gets 1 star because the dinner options did not live up to the hype. If you are going to hype me up then deliver. First, you need reservations for this place but don't trust the staff when they say they are full. Ask to be placed on a waitlist and there is a high likelihood you will be called with a reservation option. Apparently, the table behind me ordered the short rib just as I did. They loved the dish because I overheard them raving about it to their friends. I credit their compliments to not really being foodies but rather people used to eating under seasoned food. The short rib looked delicious plated but the taste was underwhelming. It lacked seasoning from the potatoes to the sauce to the actual meat. The best part of this dish was the pretty picture I was able to take to compliment this review. Therefore, the short rib dish was better seen and not eaten. The burger was ok but season with salt and pepper before eating. The charcuterie board was the better dish out of appetizers and main courses. The bread was pretty good which is the only thing saving this place from getting one star. I want my money and calories back. read more

I celebrated my 40th birthday here. I have mixed feelings about my experience. Most of the food was great, some of it was quite bland. The service left more to be desired. To start, no one ever answers the phone. You have to call the hotel front desk to get assistance, or drive to the resort. Unfortunately our table was not thoroughly cleaned before we were seated, and our waitor really struggled with the bills. Based on prices and smart casual attire recommend for this restaurant, we did not expect to see so many 12 and under kids in the dining room for a late Friday dinner. Dinner for 6 was over $600. Why are all these kids here? I have had plenty of good steak but this missed the mark. Did not finish my 44 farms NY strip. Mentioned it had a strong salt taste which was confirmed by another guest. Steak of this quality does not need to be seasoned but it seemed to have a fine seasoning on it. Service was acceptable but if the waitress was not spending so much time cleaning up a room with 4 families and 12 kids, I would assume she would have been more attentive. Getting a cart back to JW Marriott was impossible and our mobility limited guest was forced to walk. Will seek other options in the future. My dinner companions had the salmon and that was superb, well cooked and the tasty; the other had the porterhouse pork chop, talk about tender and juicy. We checked into the resort late Saturday evening and didn't get the chance to make an advance reservation but they were able to accommodate us in even tho they were fully committed for the evening! We had an amazing server who was very thorough & attentive in giving us suggestions & even getting us lobster Mac & cheese as requested even tho it's not on the menu! Everything from the crab cakes to the cedar plank salmon (which I had) filet mignon (my husband had) was cooked to perfection!!! Even tho we were stuffed we decided to get the coffee dessert & the pecan bread pudding dessert to go.... & had it back in our suite later, & they were both sooooo good!!! I enjoyed the environment here and all the food I had except the steak and the dessert, which basically boils down to the food here was mediocre at best. I had the 8oz Wagyu filet medium rare and honestly it was nothing to rave about or order again. It may have been that I just got a bad cut of meat. I was expecting some melt-in-your-mouth steak but parts of my steak was tough to cut through even with the steak knife. And sadly, I had multiple bites that were hard to chew. Quite disappointing for my first Texas steak experience. I also tried my friend's pan roasted Skuna Bay salmon and thought the lemon flavor was way too overpowering and the salmon was a little overdone. For dessert, we tried their flourless chocolate cake and the mascarpone cheese cake. I have a soft spot for cheesecake and unfortunately the ones here just lacked the strong cheesecake flavor that I love, and I definitely could not taste any mascarpone in it. The consistency was also slightly grainy. It looked like it had been sitting outside for too long because their was a crust on the top, instead of having that smooth top. I usually love anything chocolate but the flourless chocolate cake was just not doing it for me. It was trying to be a mix between a mousse, a pudding and a cake and not really succeeding at any of these. The consistency of this "cake" is best described as "pasty." Not a fan. Now onto the better parts... The iceberg salad was quite good- partly because I was starving by the time it finally arrived. My favorite part of it was the creamy herb dressing. I didn't care too much for the bacon bits or blue cheese. Presentation was great and from far away, this salad looks like a cupcake. The best dish of the night was the Yukon gold potato puree. This dish was deliciously creamy with rich buttery potato flavor. I could eat the entire bowl. Ending on a good note, servers here are very friendly and this place gets super packed, so they deserve a shoutout for hustling super hard and making sure all guests are well taken care of. read more

Although, when we left, we saw a table getting a dessert with a decorated plate and a candle. The wine list was not extensive - as mentioned below. There were only a few options. We had to ask our server for refills consistently. Our Brussels, Mac & cheese, and the steak were loaded with salt. Terribly. My husband ordered medium well and got medium rare. Typically, at a steakhouse, the server will ask you to cut into your steak before leaving the table. Not this time. After checking into the hotel and upgraded to a suite I made reservations on open table for dinner. I started off the evening by ordering adult beverages from the E tablet. From wine to mixed drinks, cognac and even cigars were just a click away! For starters I went with a wedge salad that was wonderful - cheesy and loaded with crispy bacon. For the main course - the tomahawk Pork chop. Ala carte sides chosen were the creamed spinach and fingering potatoes that was plentiful for two. I sampled the honey jalapeno scallops and it was the bomb! Our waiter Bryan was a character who knew how to joke around but kept it semi professional. I admire that he noticed our food was taking longer than normal and gave us complimentary upside down peach cake topped with gelato which was sinful tasting!
