My partner and I had an early valentines dinner in 1928, such a lovely cozy place. We had reservations for a table, but we opted to sit in the bar. The best decision we had; as soon as we sat down, we were greeted by Ray, probably one of the most attentive and knowledgeable bartenders I've had. He guided us through the food menu which such ease and gave us some great recommendations; the restaurant was quite busy our bartender seemed like he had a whole section of tables in the dining room and the whole bar, which made it more impressive than he had time to make our night very special, the food was excellent, but the highlight of the night was Ray's service, I would recommend to everyone, and we can't wait to come back! read more

Our entrees we're delicious (veal chop & scallops) but we can't say the same for the experience. A lot of little things added up that made for a frustrating night. We waited 15 minutes for a menu and a server. They sat us at a table that was so tight that it was a balancing act to fit cocktails, side plates and two apps. We asked for coffee at 9:50 ish (8:30 reservation) and they pushed back had to check with the kitchen. They also didn't let us get cheesecake because it was after 10pm however our bill was $240 for two and it was Saturday night...IMO if you're going to offer an 8:30 reservation and charge steak house prices you need to treat your customers a little better. The owner, Kristin, is a doll and her husband is the life of the party. her daughter is a gem and honestly the whole experience was more than I expected. This is a cute place. The food was delicious and the service was very good. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that it was unbearably noisey near the bar. Fortunately it was slightly better in the back room although the talkative young women next to us were kind of screeching and the din from the other rooms was still audible. We were finishing up wine after dinner, far back section they call the library and didn't realize the time nor see that the place had emptied out. Some rude lady that worked there yelled in the room that yeah we are closed now and people should leave .... Horribly rude! This is not how you keep businesses open during these pandemic times, staff need discipline and to be managed. read more

Perfect! It was a wonderful dinner for the three of us. The feel of the place is cozy. The wait staff were attentive but not intrusive. I enjoyed the classic Steak Frittes, which was probably the best I've had. Most often a flank steak isn't treated with this same care. But here was a tender and perfectly cooked steak with a tasty char, working so well with the bright chimichurri sauce. Fries were light and crispy little shoestrings. At the end, the very best tiramisu--light and creamy with the right amount of chocolate forward flavor. Hoping for an opportunity to return. read more

I'm hesitant to write a kind review because I don't want more people to learn about this restaurant....but after even my first visit I knew it was my favorite Boston spot. I've dined at nearly all of the top rated Boston restaurants, and while there are many great places, the overall experience at 1928 is unmatched in my opinion. The deviled eggs were delicious and I had the ravioli special which was AMAZING. The service was top notch. Our waiter was very attentive and made great menu suggestions. Dined here about a week after they opened on 12/3/21. Terrific atmosphere and friendly service. Overall the food presentation for the price point could've been better. We ordered the daily crudo (crab), deviled eggs, the burger, oven roasted chicken & the chocolate depression cake. The skin was left on several pieces of the crabmeat in the crudo dish. We found eggshell pieces on the deviled eggs. The burger was average - the sweet pickles were interesting. The oven roasted chicken was moist & the pesto sauce very flavorful ... the portion was very small and it came served with potatoes, no roasted fall veggies as indicated on the menu. The chocolate depression cake was dry, however a nice blend of flavors. read more

Disappointing for sure. And I will unfortunately predict this restaurant will not last unless drastic operational changes are made. I ate there on a Sunday, December, 19th. 1st notable observation was the Co-owner boozing it up as early as 4:30 pm. That's not a good sign in any restaurant, especially a new one. The Bartender was swamped and had very little support. It took 15 minutes to get a menu because she was so backed up and dealing with kitchen issues and a slew of custom cocktails with no barback help. The Kitchen neglected to tell her about several items missing that evening off the menu, but patrons were allowed to order these dishes and when the food came out, they were missing the primary ingredient; like the shrimp on a shrimp salad! And if the patron did not speak up, it was charged on their bill, but later removed. I sat down long enough for 2 sets of couples to pass through their meals and a larger group nearby for drinks and appetizers. All had sub-optimal to poor experiences when it involved food service. And we do not need another watering hole in Beacon Hill necessarily. We need coffee and food with some ethnic diversity, please. Or a menu that will make your taste buds buds water! The Co-owner (male) mainly socialized with a few select patrons and never asked others about their dining experience. He spent most of his time boisterously talking about the origins of the restaurant and was oblivious to the crumbling customer experiences around him. He also was drinking quite heavily and that is not a good thing. Usually you might see an owner having a single cocktail, but at the end of the shift, not near the start of peak time, or when there were so many known issues happening. There were many miscommunications from the kitchen and new staffing issues noted and the waiters did not know the table numbers (albeit it is all so new). You can tell there was no chemistry between the wait staff, co-owner and Bartender. No positive energy, just flat. The Bartender was doing as good a job as can be and was quite skilled. I found the menu was disappointing as a 2nd year vegan-vegetarian, (but will eat fish) there was little to choose from. In an upscale area with food conscious people, this will be a detriment to them. The two couples that were next to me, both had wilted salad greens swimming in an unremarkable dressing and other sub-optimal dishes, except for their burger. The salad greens were also wilted on top of my tuna tartar appetizer. Though the tuna tartar was tasty, it was notably missing a few signature ingredients described in the dish and it could have used a few more chips (were these home made or from a bag, I am left wondering?). I was so hungry and needing something else, but with limited menu choices, forced to order the broiled vegetables side dish. I found these to be perfectly seasoned with sea salt and cooked through texture-wise, but arrived barely luke warm at the table. They also could have additionally used some flavoring like rosemary or thyme. The last couple stayed after I departed and texted me later it took 2.5 hrs to get their main dinner, (granted it was a steak), but that is still unacceptable. The Co-owner, then sat himself at another large dinner party (in the middle of their table acting like the center of attention!) continuing to booze it up while the rest of the restaurant was barely operating at scale. He could have stepped up, got behind the bar and or helped run or re-direct food from the kitchen. He could have also better communicated what items are out of stock and he could have paid attention to more patrons than the select few he chose. I loved the interior and decor and might stop by again to see if the experience will be different. I encourage others to offer up honest and unbiased feedback to prevent this restaurant from failure when our neighborhood needs them more than ever. -Left Hanging... read more

Had a very unfortunate brunch experience here today. I have come once before for dinner and had a nice meal, so I'm not sure what the deal was for brunch-- we were a party of 2 and there were only 2 other parties in the restaurant, yet the service was bizarre. It took over an hour to receive our food, and after about 45 minutes the waiter let us know it was coming soon. Then after 10 minutes he came out to let us know there were no French fries and both of our orders contained that. There appeared to be some drama in the kitchen with the two workers running back and forth, calling someone on a cell. At this point I let the waiter know if our food hadn't been started yet we would like to cancel. He then came back with the food and the meal was below average for the price. I would have appreciated some sort of acknowledgment/ apology for the strange service but the staff seemed very preoccupied. I really respect the hospitality industry and know how hard it is to find help these days but this was just on another level. Would not spend my money here. read more

We live on the Hill and are thrilled to have such a cool, high-quality new local place open up. BH needs more restaurants like 1928, and we very much want it to be a huge success. We had a super fun night there and this review is mostly to be helpful feedback to make this place even better and hopefully a Hill mainstay for years to come. The design and food quality is impressive, but hopefully they plan to iron out some inconsistencies - most particularly in the wildly unpredictable pricing structure. To start with - the food was almost across the board excellent, so what wasn't really stuck out and seemed out of place. The apps are expensive, but simple and excellent (especially the crab cocktail) They serve Taittenger by the glass, which is always cool to find. The cocktail we tried was superb but priced at $25, which is some serious "Hotel Rooftop in Manahattan" pricing, not Beacon Hill neighborhood spot pricing. The mains were fantastic, and priced in the low to mid $30's, spot on and exceptional - the short ribs were the best I've ever had, and pasta is offered in half portions which is always appreciated and a great move. A side dish of creamed spinach (impossible to mess up) was a disaster: a little ramekin with a small handful of half-raw baby spinach leaves sitting in a pool of milk. Bizarre, and made way weirder by the $12 price tag. Otherwise, so far, great, but towards the end of the meal is when things got a little wild. So: The desserts are specials, so they aren't printed on the menu. We asked for one of each of the tiramisu (made in-house) and a slice of chocolate cake (made off-site) and one espresso. The tiramisu was good, if a little sweet. The chocolate cake was very simple, a little boring but fine. Inexplicably, they were both served in a giant puddle of sickly sweet, artificial grocery store whipped cream- still bearing the star shape of the can dispenser. A weird choice made 100X crazier when we got the bill. That piece of plain (not even house-made) chocolate cake was priced at $16.00 -- now, we don't go out to dinner to save money and tend to splash out, but this was jaw-dropping. As we were discussing if it was maybe a typo, my husband almost spit out his sip of espresso -- spotting on the bill that it had cost $8.00. Once more: a single, tiny, black cup of coffee, adorned with neither sugar nor a lemon slice nor even a spoon cost eight US dollars. A large imported glass bottle of Pellegrino was $7, for comparison. In two dozen or more white table cloth tasting restaurants across the world, I have never, not once, encountered an $8 single espresso. Our waiter was extremely nice and thoughtful the whole night and when we pointed it out to him, absolutely assuming their computer was glitching, he handled it right away. To put this in perspective, if four friends stopped by one cold afternoon to warm up with a piece of cake and single black espresso each, their bill would be $100 before tax and tip. As I said, the food is generally fantastic, the service was thoughtful and enjoyable, the decor is great, and the vibe is just great. An overall disappointing evening, even though the restaurant is lovely and nicely decorated. I had requested a relatively quiet table in the lounge for my husband's birthday; we were seated at the end of the banquette toward the door where it was very active, and we were close to several tables of other diners. Being in the "lounge," I should have figured it would be super loud, but I didn't: my bad, even prior to 7 pm it was. It wasn't the ambiance I had hoped for, but I didn't know the space. Our server was very professional and accommodating but holding down many positions, as we saw her bartending as well. The cocktails were excellent, as was the wine by the glass we chose. For the food: the fried oysters were more like a cornmeal fritter with minced oysters - not whole fried oysters; the best part of this dish was the tartar sauce. The steak with the steak frites was perfectly cooked and tender, however, the menu stated it came with greens, but instead came with sautéed broccoli, carrots, and Brussels sprouts; when asked, the server checked and was told that a substitution was made because the greens were not available. This should have been told to me before ordering because I may have changed my order, having not chosen a salad appetizer. The cod was slightly undercooked, which is a tricky fish to get right. The baked potato side was disappointing in that it had been prematurely pre-prepared, and wasn't adequately rehydrated with fresh cheese, butter or sour cream to make it that anticipated decadent treat. By the end of the meal we were eager to leave, even without a birthday dessert or toast (don't expect any acknowledgement of a special occasion); it was time to wander out and find another spot to end our night. read more

Disappointing. Excited to try this newish spot. The vibe was as promised -antiques, slightly speak easy and comfortable. Our waiter Neelan did a nice job despite being overloaded with tables. Food was mediocre. Artic char was dry, overcooked and slightly fishy. Bolognese was tepid, dry and light on the sauce. We asked for a bit more sauce and got a tiny amount that was cool. The topping on the evening was when the manager came to our table 85 minutes into our meal to tell us the table was reserved in 5 minutes. We were walk-in party of four at 5:00 on a Saturday night and were accommodated. Very happy that we were. My short ribs and my wife's cod were excellent, as was the crab cake appetizer we shared. Our companions were vegan and they were OK with their roasted vegetable platter. We were full and didn't try dessert. We were in a middle room which was reasonably quiet. Atmosphere upscale without being pretentious. We had no problem with service. Fine dining prices for fine dining quality. We will be back. read more

I had the best Sunday brunch here that I've had in a while. It has such fun and comfortable seating, a beautiful bar, and overall amazing ambiance. I had the BEST brioche French toast and coffee. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! I don't write many review but this one is necessary. My family and I (5pp) had a 7:15pm reservation on Christmas eve to celebrate the holiday. The interior was decorated beautifully however that was the only thing positive I have to say about 1928. We were seated and the waiter completely RUSHED us through dinner, literally out the door 45 minutes later! 45 MINUTES FOR DINNER FOR 5! Five minutes after seated, we ordered drinks and looked at menu. The server came over a few minutes later and said many of the reservations were cancelled last minute so the kitchen wanted to close and to get our order in quickly. We tried to order an appetizer but was told the chef needed the entire order so we took a few more minutes to decide and placed our order. The appetizer came our in 5 minutes, 10 minutes later 2 entrees came out, 5 minutes later the remaining 2 entrees came out. My daughter's burger (ordered medium) was completely raw. We sent it back. The server came over and told us they were comping dessert but he would bring it over now since they wanted to close early. He brought the desserts to the table before anyone was even close to finishing dinner and before my daughter even got her burger and then said he would be dropping the check. He asked for payment before she even got her burger. Once her food came is was more than well done and hard. I told the server that if they didn't want to stay open, they should have called us instead of completely ruining what was a special night. Apparently one of the owners family was seated next to us and once they left we were pushed out. Terrible way to start up a new restaurant!!! So many other choices in the area that would welcome your business, this one does not! read more
