I've heard so many rave reviews about this place in the 10 or so years I've lived in Bakersfield. My folks love it, friends love it, everyone seems head over heels with this little hole-in-the-wall staple of Kern County. This slice of Ham was as big as my head. I wanted a breakfast that was high in protein and I certainly got what I asked for! It was $60 for three breakfasts, which seemed a little pricey. But then again, with inflation as high as it is, that's not really their fault. And breakfast foods are kind of like sex--even when it's bad, it's still decent. I can't say I've ever had ham and eggs anywhere and thought "my God, that's the best thing I've ever eaten!" These Ham and Eggs were definitely ham and eggs! That being said--my mom got the Pastrami sandwich and I had a little taste. Now THAT is worth the trip. All in all, I was starving when I sat down, now I'm not! I've been living in Bakersfield for two years now, and I first heard about 24th Street Cafe from some of my local family. The food is great--especially the breakfast pancakes, which are amazing. However, I've noticed a difference in how customer service can feel depending on who you are. As a person of color, it's hard not to feel a subtle difference in how you're treated compared to white customers. I'd still recommend the food, but I'd also give a heads-up to fellow people of color--it might come with a small reminder of what it once felt like to be treated differently. read more

I've been coming here for years because the food is always good but lately have noticed the food has been different. The meat seems cheaper, not cooked correctly. Further, the service has been lacking. I have noticed waiters tend to greet and quickly serve certain customers. As you walk in through the city street doors, you find yourself transported to an encumbered small space with a truck-stop, diner vibe. The waitress behind the central bar, directs you to open seatings either in a booth, at the bar, or in the back on the heated patio. As the staff greets you with smiles and pleasantries. That was how my wife's and my experience was for brunch today. I order two cups of coffee, a chicken fried streak 'n' eggs with country potatoes and sourdough toast while my wife ordered a custom omelette with toast and in-home raspberry jam. After placing our orders the café was bustling with incoming and outgoing customers and modern pop music. Now imagine a tenderized thick, battered, seasoned and deep fried steak that is smothered with a bacon filled country gravy with a side of country potatoes that had a mixture of extra crispy and firm yet fluffy pieces of potatoes with combination of fire, roasted peppers, and onions. 24th Café is one of my top five recommended places to eat a country fried steak. What a fabulous little diner (cafe) indeed! This was another find on yelp for me during our trip and it did not disappoint! We arrived around 10 AM on a Monday and the place was pretty packed. We were lucky that there were two tables open. We were promptly seated and greeted by a hustling waitress who really knew the menu. When asked what their things were she gave us several options which we ordered. She even let us know they were on "Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives", which was news to me! Good for them! Coffee was a solid 10 - dark, full-bodied, and delicious. Loved that they severed real cream and raw sugar for it. As for brunch - we opted for recommendations by our waitress which were: the Pumpkin Pancakes, Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs, and the House Smoked Pastrami. EVERY SINGLE THING WAS SO GOOD!! The servings were large as well, so we got boxes to go for road food which was great! Pumpkin Pancakes: 3 large rounds of perfectly spiced and soft cakes served with wonderfully spiced nut butter of pecans and cloves. Chicken Fried Steak: Just like grandma used to make! Perfectly pounded out beef steaks with a crisp chicken fry crust on top of a bacon cream gravy. The over-easy eggs were perfectly runny and the crisp sourdough bread soaked them up so well. The hashbrowns were also on point - super crisp outside with soft spuds inside. The Sammy - well, I only got one bite LOL. But that bite was yummy for sho! The bread had a nice crust but was super soft inside. The mustard was a perfect complement to the meat and those pickles were amazing! You really can't go wrong with any of them! The service was spot on as well - prompt, food came out hot, and coffee was always ready for a refill before your cup was halfway down! I'll start with bad and work my way up. Parking is bad. For such a good place, just terrible parking. But what a great diner. They have both inside and outside seating. Inside looks like a throw back to the old days. Outside looks like a Covid modification that was well decorated. Very, very charming. It's fun to see such wholesome place with great people. There were bickers, school kids eating together as well as mom group there all enjoying good food. Service is excellent. Very attentive and helpful. I had Texas chili even though it was breakfast. It was AMAZKNG. Add my meal with pancakes, one of the best breakfast in a long time. If this place was in LA, it would do well 24/7. In Bako, it closes around -2pm. First off...I really miss Milt's, but knowing that 24th Street Cafe is owned by his son and is like the real Milt's makes me happy. I normally went to Milt's because it was bigger and easier to find parking, but it's definitely worth going to 24th Street! Took my mom to breakfast before a full day of appointments. Busy place. Not full, but eventually filled up after we arrived. Server was so nice! Brought our drinks. Took our orders. French toast and bacon for Mom, waffle and bacon for me. The food was hot and fresh. Stopped here on my way to Modesto from LA. The food here is solid and the prices are decent. I ordered the sunrise special which was $10 and included 2 pancakes, 1 egg and some bacon. They allowed me to add bananas to the pancakes for a small extra charge. My husband ordered the chili cheese omelette and it came with hash browns and biscuits and gravy. So as I guide myself through this menu I decide on trying the chili because that's what was famous on DDD. I also wanted the stuffed French toast because it's not something I normally make at home. She comes takes the order just very computer like. Apparently they don't have strawberries for stuffed French toast but they do have banana? Don't get me wrong I love banana but I just didn't want it with the French toast. In my head I pictured literally stuffed French toast with cream inside, IT WAS NOT THAT. Literally waited around for 30 + minutes as we watched people that were seated after us get their entire food orders. I know they are busy but never once did she come say sorry for the wait nothing. When she came around to refill water or my coffee she was aggressive at pouring it, it went all over the table and at one point when she poured my coffee she didn't even warn me which legit scared me since the coffee cup was close to me. I was wearing shorts and I honestly felt that the way she poured it was going to burn my legs. After finally getting the order she ask if we need anything else I said yes, he is missing the onions on his dish, we need Tabasco. Takes forever to bring the onions, completely forgets about the Tabasco. My boyfriend ordered the chorizo plate. He enjoyed it. My French toast was bullshit lol. Two French toast, with a block of fucking cream cheese in the middle. Like even if I had ordered it with the bananas I don't think that block of cream cheese would be any different. It was a huge disappointment. I was better off ordering plain ass French toast. We never saw the waitress again until she literally put the check on the table. She said nothing, just set it down. We made sure to leave her ZERO TIP. My boyfriend always tips, even over tips, this is the first time he has left 0. We were both feeling a little racial tension as well. I'm Mexican and my boyfriend is white. I so have to say she was a little nicer to him than me. As I watched her check on her other tables she did have attitude and was rude but it was different. If you have ever been in a race situation you know what I mean. BAD VIBES. When I left I tried to contact their manager, the girl I spoke with said they were extremely busy and that she will take my information and he would get back to me by Wednesday since he has days off. My 1st time visiting Bakersfield and was recommended 24th Street Cafe. There is PLENTY of seating available indoors and outdoors. I arrived around 1pm a few Sundays ago and the wait wasn't too long for a party of 3. Since I just came from a farm and having eaten many fresh eggs, I opted for non-egg items. The pumpkin pancakes caught my eye and I requested chocolate chips in the pancakes. Upon receiving the item, I was perplexed as all the chocolate chips were sprinkled outside the pancakes. Luckily, once digging in, chocolate was oozing out endlessly, which is the way I like it! I got a side of country potatoes and they were also cooked the way I like them. Service was great. The waitress admitted that she lost our table's order, but she was sincere and came by every so often afterwards. The atmosphere is casual and great for conversations. No one had to yell to hear each other. I also appreciated that upon closing, no one hurried our table. Restrooms were also clean. You know every once in awhile when I watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and see cafe that is old school I have to come visit and eat there. It really warms your heart when the owner of the business speaks so fondly of his employees as family and have been with him over 20 years. That says a lot folks about the owner and you gotta patronize someone who treats his employees the way he would like to be treated.
