First, let's be clear the reason to eat here is good Jamaican food at reasonable prices, not…read moreambiance. It's in the food court of Asheville Mall, which like most malls is struggling these days. The good side of that is most of the crappy chain mall food outlets are gone, leaving space for a local business to take its place. It seems like a family run operation. They had a decent selection of menu items (but they were out of a few things, which seems a little strange for Saturday lunchtime). The food was good, which is the key thing. I haven't been to Jamaica so I can't compare it to food there, but having had Jamaican food a number of times in the US and Canada, I'd say it among the best I've had. We ordered 2 Small entrees: chicken curry and jerk chicken. Each came with 2 sides. There was a perfect amount of food for lunch. Medium might be good for dinner, but I can't really imagine getting a Large unless you're splitting it, saving some for leftovers or you're a really big eater. The (bone-in) chicken in the curry was delicious. It was so tender it basically fell off the bone. The curry sauce was excellent. It went well with the yellow rice we selected for this entree. We choose the plantains as the second side for this one, and while a bit chewy, they were good. The (bone-in) jerk chicken was also good, although between the two I liked the curry better. The jerk chicken had been grilled nicely with dry jerk seasoning, but they also provided optional jerk sauce, which was good on both the chicken and the side of brown rice with Jamaican peas (similar to black-eyed peas) we got with this entree. The sauce was dark and smoky with a good amount of jerk heat. As the second side for this entree, we got cabbage. I'm not sure what all they do to this side dish, but it was surprisingly flavorful. It had some carrots mixed in along with spices like rosemary and somehow they had created an almost rue-like sauce. It was very savory. Based on the taste, quantity, quality and price of the food alone, I'd give this place a 5. But the service was close to rude. Like it was a big bother to take our order and provide us the food. That costs them a star. Even at a fast food counter in a mall food court, if you are a business owner or server, you can be friendly, or at least passably nice. Still, given the food itself, we'd go back.
