85 in SoCal is usually packed. I associate 85 with people calling "fresh bread" every few minutes. Not the case here ... all of the sliced bread loafs I saw expired the next day... The buns were slightly better but not sure if that's just because there's no expiration date. The bread itself did not taste particularly good. The worst part of 85 is that it never tastes as good the next day. In Taiwan, 85 is not considered a good bakery. If all of them were like this location, I can see why. read more

This bakery has a lot more options for cakes and pastries than the Milpitas one, which I love. I got the white chocolate strawberry pudding cup. The whipped cream was really stiff and the strawberry jam had a weird texture to it. It was sort of stringy. The cake and pudding layer was really good though! It wasn't too sweet and the sponge cake added a nice texture to the dessert itself. I wasn't too impressed with it like I had hoped. :( I think I'll stick with their breads and cake slices for now. read more

Yay! I'm a fan. This is my first time visiting 85 degrees bakery. I heard this place is very popular for their pastries. With that being said, I had to try it for myself. The bread here is freshly made and you can see them baking in the back behind the glass window. Their pastries range in different prices, mostly around $1.50 to $4 an item. I read reviews about their taro bread and I had to try it. I thought it was a bit doughy for me and the taro filling was not how I expected. I would prefer the filling to be sweeter. I also tried their coffee bread with mochi and red bean. It was unique, the texture was chewy, and it wasn't too sweet. The best one I had was their OREO BREAD, not sure if that's the name of the pastry but it was BOMB! The bread tasted exactly like an oreo and to top it off it had oreo crumbs as topping. Seating: this particular 85 is one of the larger 85 that I've seen, although they don't really take advantage of their size and seating is moderate, at best. I saw a few people doing work on their computers here, but it was more spacious than studious. I had come in on a Thursday afternoon and was surprised to see only two employees in the front. Both were manning the register, but a decent line had started to form. On average, paying can take a little bit longer than preferred but is never super terrible. Don't eat here. It's no good. I ordered a jalapeño cheese bun, and when I got home and took a bite this is what I saw. Called the store and spoke to the manager, RJ. He said he would give me full refund, but only refunded me 3 dollars for the bun. He gave me a nasty look when I told him I lost my appetite and wanted my whole meal refunded. He said "bring everything back for me to inspect and I will give you refund". Not worth my gas money to drive back 3 different times for a measly 10 dollar refund. He should've given me the refund no questions after seeing that I just consumed garbage from his store. Clearly his first managerial role and hopefully his last. It's been years since my last review and now that the hype has died down, it's been easy to visit and grab bread and go. They've also added a lot of new things to their menu. My wife and I come here on occasion to buy pastries for our next day breakfast. We've always liked 85 and this location is also pretty good. It's usually pretty crowded as expected of a 85, but the experience is for the most part pleasant. Prices for the pastries aren't too expensive and you can get full cakes, teas, and coffee as well. The staff in general are pretty friendly and they put out little signs to let you know how you can help expedite your checkout. Given that you do spend quite a bit of time in line, the suggestions are warranted to keep everything flowing. Parking for this place can really suck as it's next to several restaurants and Ranch 99. Overall, we'll probably come back here again if we're around the area as the pastries have always been pretty good and the wife and I need our sweet tooth satisfied. read more

we came here on a sunday afternoon (around 2:30pm) and were surprised at the selection. at first glance, it looked like they had many pastries to pick from but upon walking up, there were many doubles of the same and very few of the pastries left of the ones we actually wanted (only two boxes of mochi egg tarts out and 1 half dozen box out). additionally, we know it may be out of their hands but they should be a little more on top of keeping the doors closed especially during mid-day. it was humid inside from the hot air coming in and the doors were left open so it wreaked of cigarette smell (from people smoking right in front waiting for the buffet next door). this is our least favorite 85* bakery so far in the bay area. we give this location three stars though because the staff are friendly when we were being rung up and we were able to grab a few pastries. we see that a lot of ppl rate the drinks here high so maybe we'll give this place another chance some time in the future and try out something from their bar. read more

I am a huge sucker for carbs! So, naturally I get excited whenever I can stop by 85. Sadly, I'm not a big fan of their drinks and it can get super crowded during the weekends. However, on a brighter note, 85 is located in a large shopping plaza so parking shouldn't be too much of an issue. It's also fairly spacious inside and customer service has always been friendly. 85 provides a great selection of items to choose from and all reasonably priced. I usually come here to get my fix of Asian breads with my go to order of red bean , taro , hot dog & Hawaiian buns ! I personally would rate this place 4 stars but I had a friend doordash their strawberry deluxe whole cake to me and sad to say it was probably one of my worse cake experiences . The cake look fine when it arrived but when I ate it wow.... the creme brûlée pudding layer was literally cold with ice crystals and the cake layer was SO dry. The strawberry cream filling was slightly better but it tasted so artificial. Let's be serious, I don't like coming here because of the chaos and usually a long wait. So why do I come here? Three words, Chocolate Chip Bowl!!! Just writing the name of it, spurs a craving. What is wrong with me you might ask? Well, I'm past the denial phase and will openly admit that I am addicted to them. How can you not be? The dark chocolate chips surrounded by a dough from heaven with a sweet glaze that only gets sweeter as you work your way to the center of this jewel. Yes it may sound like I'm totally being dramatic about this baked product, but I can't help myself. If my memory serves me right, Ari W. made the introduction, and I'm still undecided if I should thank her or blame her. Of course I'm kidding. These bowls are in high demand to a point that you need to guard your tray from potential thieves. True story, an Asian woman attempted to steal one from my tray, when she observed me grabbing the last four bowls. I caught her just in time and blocked her haste. Once your tray is full of baked goodies, you proceed to wait in the next line to pay and order your beverage if you choose to do so. Each baked item is placed in a plastic sleeve to prevent cross contamination of flavor in the to-go box. The coffee here is outstanding, I had my usual Americano (cold version) and I loved its boldness and full roast flavor. If you like cream in your chilled coffee, state so when ordering. I assumed that I can add it after, but the coffee is sealed and the cream they use is a powder, presumably driven by the fact that a number of Asians are lactose intolerant. They gladly remade it per my request. I've been very fortunate that on multiple occasions , Janet O., Linda P. and/or Ari W. have brought this treat home to me. This oh so popular bakery has so many fresh baked delicious breads and pastries to choose from! This location seems more spacious and popular than the location in Milpitas. The bread is always coming out in batches and you can really taste the freshness here. There are many different kinds to choose from and most of them are actually pretty big! They also have drinks, cakes, cookies and other desserts/pastries. There's a lot of people and not enough seating so plan to just bring these goodies home. I like that they individually wrap each bread in plastic. However, the person who wrapped ours up wasn't very good at it. As she was wrapping the honey bread, she placed the sticky bread on top of some bread that was already packaged so the plastic got sticky. Not fun to grab when it's all sticky. She also had to repeat things to us multiple times because she couldn't remember what we had said. The honey bread is huge and fun to eat. It's sticky from the honey coating. The bread is so fluffy inside and it has a slightly sweet flavor to it. If you love honey then this is quite the treat. I really wanted the marble taro but they were out. I do like that they shout how long it'll take for certain breads to come fresh out of the oven. That way it keeps you updated and notified on certain breads you might want. Instead I got the marble swirl which was also yummy. It has a nice crisp outside that almost reminds me of a bread version of a Palmer cookie. Inside a sweet taro filling that is luscious. The dusting of powdered sugar adds another level of sweetness to each bite as well. I would definitely come back here again to grab a box of breads home if I'm in the area. This is actually the second 85 degrees bakery I've ever visited, the first one I visited was actually down in SoCal. With this said, between both locations my experiences have been compatible and both positive. My mom decided to stock me up on some pastries to take back home to SoCal...so here we are. The cool thing bout this bakery, is that you are incomplete control of your visit. You start by getting a tray, and you walk through the baked goods section and select which pastries you'd like to purchase. Pastries range in price from $0.95-$3.25 an item. A few fan favorites for me is the taro roll and jalapeño roll, both very flavorful and good in texture. All in the, the prices for the product are reasonable and the experience is always fun. Oh boy! I am not a fan of long lines. This one moves fast and just coming from a very fun tea party I was in for anything! Besides I was with good friends that day! Really-the lines move fast. It's organized chaos and it's for the best! Once you get in grab a tray. Lay a white paper over your tray. Grab a tong. Now pick away! Oh my god! So much choices! And that's just the non-dessert section. That guilty section is towards the left side as you walk in. I managed to exert some self control and only picked five items: Rose Cheese. Premium Milk. I have heard there was a huge 85 Degrees following from friends that had lived or visited So Cal often so when this was the first location that opened in Nor Cal, it was a big deal. With so many places to go already, I decided to wait until the hype died down before checking it out. They have since opened quite a few locations here in Nor Cal so it's not so crazy at this location. This is like a larger, cleaner, Taiwanese version of Sheng Kee. There are two sections, one to order drinks and cakes and the other to order breads/pastries. Whole cakes run $30 which is a bit pricey for Asian cakes but they also have individual sized desserts for about $3.20-$3.60 a piece which I think is the better bet. read more

People kept checking in here and they were all excited about how wonderful the baked goods were at 85°C. So, when I was in the neighborhood, I made a point to swing by. Parking tends to be frustrating at many Asian strip malls due to the popularity. This was no exception. It was a little before dinner time and this area was jammed. Cars were parked illegally in front of the bakery. As long as it's convenient for them, they couldn't care less about blocking traffic. By the time I parked and joined the sheeple, the line was out the door. When it's finally my turn, I picked out a few items with interesting names: Berrytale, Calamari Stick, Strawberry Half Moon, Chocolate sponge, Matcha red bean, and Coconut custard. They tasted fine but didn't wow me. Unfortunately, the whole time I was there, no taro items came out from the kitchen. That might have been the one that lures customers in? But I will never know. I was going to order a drink and a dessert dish as well but that would require more waiting. Forget it! My philosophy is to try anything once...er almost anything. Boo. I was expecting 85C to be above average. Taro puff pastry had absolutely 0 taro flavor, though the bread was pleasant. I kept checking to see if I had hit taro gold in the middle of the pastry or if I was just eating bread. Nope, there was definitely a purpleish substance present. It just didn't taste like anything... I had an Iced Salty Green Tea something something with lychee jelly. I didn't ask for reduced sweetness here like I do at most drink places. It was so average. Gong Cha has much better milk foam. So boring! The lychee jelly wasn't even sweet. Maybe 85C should focus on either bread products or drinks and make one of them exceptional, 'cause I wasn't impressed. Maybe the cakes are really good?? I don't know... Service-wise, it took almost 10 minutes to get through the line with only 2 people in front of me, then another 10+ minutes to get the drink. I made the mistake of coming here on grand opening day (Friday, November 15th at 11am). The wait time was about 5.5hrs. I should've known better and not come on opening day, but I'd never been to an 85 Degrees Bakery before and really wanted to try their baked goods, especially their famous marbled taro buns! Ordered - Cheesy Garlic Bred x3 (really good, esp when they come right out of their oven!!) - Berry Tales x2 (still really good 2 days later!) - Mochi Egg Tarts x5 (wasn't as "mochi"-y as I had expected) - Squid Ink Roll (interesting, but nothing special. tasted more savory than sweet) - Pumpkin Tart (wow, it really tastes like I'm eating a real squash veggie) - Danish Pastry - Chocolate Croissant - Brioche ---------------------------- Total: $26.55 and 5.5hrs wasted The Experience The wait was unbelievably LONG, like over 5 hours long, but there were interesting people to talk to while waiting in line. There was even a pregnant woman in high heels waiting in line behind me! Crazy! I discovered the round packaged green tea bread with some red beans hidden in the bottom. I'd buy it again. Almond half moon with cream. Refrigerate it for dessert or a sweet snack. Separate line for those ordering just drinks and desserts displayed in the case. You can order drinks and desserts in the bread line though. Once, my cashier was nice enough to wait while I looked at the case trying to decide what cake slice/desserts to buy. The mango panna cotta in a cup is a winner! Right now they're having some Lunar New Year promotions with four types of bread, buy 3 get 1 free deals and they're giving out $3 off a future $12 purchase coupons expiring sometime in March. It's quite overwhelming to move around, which is the case for most bread establishments such as this. I feel bad for workers trying to put fresh batches of pastries into the appropriate compartments yet a whole bunch of customers just swarm them. I saw it happen-- it's a mess. I finally got to see what all the hype was about. It's Paris Baguette with a different name. I still don't see why all the Asians go crazy over this and I sure as hell wouldn't of waited in line for the grand opening lol. So my food companion and I got the Blueberry Cheesecake and Chocolate Pearl which she ended selecting a tiramisu instated because they were all out of the Choco Pearl. We also got the Berrytale, Berry Multigrain and 2 Frozen Marble Taro. The Berrytale was fresh out if the oven with a purple filling that wasn't too sweet. My Berry Multigrain was also fresh. It looked like not was hard as a rock, but it was warm and soft and possibly healthy? The Frozen Marble Taro taste just like Halo Halo. It has been crazy since their grand opening. Fresh baked goods are constantly coming out the oven around the clock to keep up with the demand which means that no matter what time of the day you come here, you'll always find a fresh batch. Alright. The hype is real. #realtalk Ive personally never been to the one in SoCal, I've only heard of it. But when they decided to open one in Newark, I thought to myself..."what the heck, we got sheng kee. What's the big deal." Shit was I wrong. I waited a week before coming to avoid the long line. Guess what? The line was still pretty darn long. But I was fascinated by the sight of so many pastries and bread items available for us to grab I felt like we were all little kids in a candy store. Here's how it works. You grab a lunch tray and some tongs, as you snake your way to the front of the line. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to grab whatever your heart desires. You'll also get a chance to watch the action as you will pass a floor to ceiling window displaying the lifelike robots in the kitchen producing the goods. Before you get to the register, someone bags all your goodies and then you pay. That's when you find out they serve other things there like milk tea and coffee. Man, us Asians love bread. Come to think of it, we don't look like kids in a candy store. Those kids look more like Asians in a bakery. read more

As my esteemed Gold Elite Member buddy "Derek Yum E. S." said, "there is talent in this place," and that... I do have to agree, indeed! Talent everywhere in fact. I came by several times during the early afternoon, which I found out, is the best time. There is hardly any line since everyone is back in their cubicle or workstations! More "Fresh Bread" for me, minus the wait time. Thank goodness, I'm back working out in the field. The pastries here are just fantastic. They are extremely fresh. If you ask me, I recommend the taro swirl. It's basically a croissant with taro filling. It's amazingly delicious. The next best thing I tried during my last several visits have been the "Italian Tomato." It literally, melted in my mouth. It's so worth the try. They do sell whole cakes here from tiramisu to cheesecake to your typical Asian sponge cakes. It's great for birthdays or parties. They also serve cappuccinos, and if you're like me who likes them strong, you can request triple shot. That will grow hair on your chest, so do take caution! :p As far as the talent, the staff here is amazing. They got their system down like an assembly line. You pick up your thongs, tray, and away you go. Then you line up and place your scrumptious selection on the nice table while you wait, and then the magic happens, they get you in and out, all wrapped up in brown box with a red sticker that says, "85c Bakery" on top of the box; all with warm and beautiful smiles! Review for the mango cake...cake looked good but the fresh mangos on top were obviously not ripe and hard like apples and not sweet at all...disappointing especially at $30. Cake was light, mousse fluffy, not overly sweet but again, having fresh mangos that tastes like apples didn't add anything to it or make for an enjoyable cake....in the future, will either check each cake to see which looked ripe or go elsewhere for a better one. read more

DO NOT COME HERE. BE CONCERNED about your safety! Bad quality!! I decided to come to the Newark location on Saturday and after biting into the raisin butter muffin discovered a finger sized piece of plastic sharp enough to cut my mouth! I was horrified and after contacting the store location was told that all they could do was refund us for just the muffin. I understand mistakes happen but this was a HUGE piece of sharp plastic that was inside of the muffin and caused harm to the customer due to negligence in the kitchen who after was not put at ease for anything that happened. I attached pictures of the bread and plastic it's one thing if it's small and could be unnoticeable but this was huge... how did this get through the doors to be sold!
