This is an OG spot for korean fried chicken that I've gone to for years. Absolutely hits the spot every time. There's a small salad bar with some shredded cabbage, spring mix, and pickled jalapeños and pickled daikon, as well as rice, all of which are unlimited. They used to let you go up and grab your own plates but recently they changed it so that they give you the plates when your chicken comes out to the table. My group got the spicy soy garlic and korean sauce chicken. Their sauces are really good and hit all the right flavor notes. Their chicken is fried really nicely, crispy on the outside and juicy inside. I really like that they use drumsticks and the whole wings here, although this is purely personal preference. Service here is not the warmest, but I wouldn't say it's unfriendly just minimalistic. Of course though, the food absolute ly makes up for it. read more

Service is horrible, the workers are all so rude. First of all, you eat off paper plates and there is a minimum of FIVE pieces per person over the age of 5. That's pretty ridiculous. We came in a group of 4, with 1 six year old. Why on earth, would we have to order 20 pieces of chicken? Their reasoning is for the AYCE salad bar that literally has 4 items. Most korean places give you unlimited banchan. Service aside, the food was just okay. I felt like the chicken is not as good as it used to be, and was just soggy. The sauces were just overly sweet as well. I'm not sure if they changed owners? I would not come if you value your time and money. read more

My boyfriend and I had been waiting to try this place for the longest - we're huge on Korean fried chicken and he kept getting reels on IG and TikTok about 99 Chicken. We came here for dinner and were surprisingly seated fast despite a packed restaurant and multiple people on the wait list (maybe because there was only two of us vs. the groups of 4+ trying to get in). We were seated in a small isolated room in the back so there was less background noise during our dinner. I love that the venue encapsulates a mom and pop style business where you can just tell the food's about to be schmackin'. We kept our order simple - half and half chicken (soy garlic and spicy) and a bottle of fresh soju. This place comes with self serve salad bar so you already know we were deep in grabbing the rice, some greens, and radish. The chicken was nice and crisp and soy garlic was pretty good. The spicy sauce could've been spicier, but it was still hittin' my taste buds in a good way. We enjoyed our meal and found everything about it to be convenient. We're planning to return in the future just to see what's up with the other options here! read more

Highly recommended!! The chicken delicious.... My tip, get the half and half sauced chicken. Hole in wall restaurant.... However the chicken here is really very satisfying and rich in flavored sauces. Cost is just about right. You get 10 large chicken and really you are able to share. For a party of four, we ordered classic and half n half. It was just enough. Too it with unlimited salad and rice. Check the place out! You won't regret it. read more

Highly recommended by my co-worker!! The chicken is delicious and comes in multiple flavored sauces. We got the honey chicken, Korean chicken and the Plain chicken. The chicken is huge pieces of dark and white meat with a nice coating that is crispy with good flavor but not too much sauce. The honey tasted just the right amount of honey and crispiness. The Korean was a little spicy but not too much with a decent amount of crispy. The plain was ok but I preferred the sauces better. The restaurant is small so not a tons of seats and cost if decent and easy to share with a group of folks or order the combination chicken. You can go grab rice and salad for your meal for free! Service was fast and decent prices. Tons of parking out front. I can't wait to come back! read more

Updating my review for my more recent Summer/Fall 2021 visit. I've been coming here for years, since at least 2014 when 99 Chicken was still under the previous ownership (believe they changed hands a few years ago). I do think that the quality has slipped a little, maybe in how flavorful the sauces are. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it does seem less delicious than before. That being said, 99 Chicken is *still good*. They retain the salad bar buffet, which has spring mix salad, fresh broccoli, coleslaw, pickled radishes, and rice. I always share the Combination plate that has all types of fried and sauce chicken with my boyfriend, and we eat all of it and a salad plate or two and leave full. The price has noticeably risen over the past couple years, but that seems to be the trend with the ongoing COVID environment. read more

Ordered the honey and spicy wings. Food was cooked well and tasted good. There was also a salad bar available and rice. Service was polite. Door was left open due to heat, unfortunately flies were able to get inside and around the food. read more

I've been coming to 99 Chicken for almost 5yrs now and brought so much friends & family. However, this comment is not for food critics. Actually, let me get this straight the food is 5/5 "hands down". Unfortunately, this is for the new management who took over from the elderly aka "short Korean lady". I missed her so much, she's genuinely care about her customer(s) not because she wanted to make money out of her kindness nor begged us to comeback. In contrary, just to be exact the daughter of the new owner who's taking orders from dine-in this young lady needs a 101 customer service training "For Real". She's definitely micromanaging her customer which is very obnoxious!!! I do not mean to harm your business in any way or in such a way that people will feel uncomfortable or discomfort about you. I wish nothing but good business so you could thrive in this economy. However, let me remind you as your steadfast customer you do not breathe down to our necks we all know that without us you're going downhill. We are paying in full amount not a penny less so let us enjoy our meal. Stop being "PENNY PINCHER" you will never succeed in this business! read more

Service is very bad. You know who you are. Your attitude has no place in the service industry. The chicken is a little bland for me so I requested for an extra plate for soy sauce but you told me to just use my plate to mix with my salad and rice and you refused to give me an extra plate! That is not a good customer service! Next time that you eat, try to use your salad plate as a dipping plate too and post it here so you can show how to do it ! read more

This place is so ridiculous and the workers are rude. They charge for everything to go, bags and containers. You wonder why at 12:00 pm the place was so empty on a Saturday and why this place has 3 stars. We tried to order a chicken sandwich and then a ten piece chicken combo. Then they said they were out of the chicken sandwiches and we had to order 15 pieces because of the 5 piece chicken rule. Annoying, we ordered and then I said something in private to my mom about how the rule was dumb because my fiancé wasn't going to get anything from the rice bar and they were out of the fried chicken sandwich. The waitress was walking by and proceeded to butt in and rudely say that that was the rule. I said okay, and then she proceeds to tell her dad in Korean lmao. And then her dad comes to me hostile and screamed "you wanna complain to me". Immediately walked out lmao. I wasn't gonna have them spit in my food. The rice and salad bar that they claim is so great and why the prices are high look old as well. Sad because I do like to support mom and pop shops, but not if they're rude to their customers. Went to Von's instead and the prices are so much cheaper and the chicken was delicious. read more

Garlic soy chicken (mild and spicy) - 4.5/5 stars Got an order of the garlic soy chicken in spicy and one order mild, both were bomb! The chicken is super moist with a nice crunchy skin. Spicy has a little kick to it, might be too much for children or for people who cannot handle spice well (aka my mom) haha. But I didn't find it too spicy at all. I can't decide which I like more.. I like how the mild might have been just a slight tad sweeter. If you're able to get half an half and kinda mix the sauce, it'd be perfect :) nonetheless, both were equally delicious. I've came here a few times and have tried the other flavors, but garlic soy is definitely my favorite. Came during covid and they have the place pretty well organized with the extra protection and places for customers to stand when ordering. Place your order, pay, wait outside, then they call your number when it's ready. There were a few people ahead of me, but the food came out super quickly. I really appreciate that they cut a triangle in the top of the to go box, which I assume is to prevent the chicken from becoming soggy. EXCELLENCE right there, thank you!! read more

99 chicken is one of the first places that comes to mind when I'm craving fried chicken. One of the first takeouts I got after moving to Santa Clara was from 99, and they didn't disappoint. I got the combo platter, which included fried chicken, sauce, honey, and spicy wings, along with a healthy serving of streamed rice and radishes. Takeouts don't include the AYCE salad they have onsite but it wasn't an issue. Service was prompt, serving size was great, and the taste was great as always! I've had 99 Chicken bookmarked for over a decade. Back when I was passing out at tables after chasing Ed Hardy and Affliction wearing dudes. Nothing is hotter than a dude wearing more rhinestones than you, right? =T I was in the area and looking through my Yelp bookmarks for a small business to support during COVID-19. I saw that 99 Chicken was open so 99 Chicken it is! During COVID-19, 99 Chicken is open for takeout. Call in our order which will be ready in about 20-25 minutes. This time, I made sure to skim through the recent yelp reviews - looks like the meanie owner is no longer there but the rules still apply: minimum 5 pc order per a person, minimum tip for dine-in, and etc. BUT, since it's takeout only, those rules can't be applied, other than no free salad bar and rice is provided....because it's takeout. I called in my order for the highly raved about Soy Sauce Garlic KFC, spicy (10 pc - $20.99) and requested a combo of drumsticks and wings since it was my first time. I arrived to a sign posted in front: "No Mask, No Entry!" Kudos to the owner for this (so far, only two Santa Clara County cities *require* masks: Milpitas and Cupertino)! Wished more businesses did this. There were markings on the floor for social distancing, a plexiglass barrier in front of the cash register, and hand sanitizer for customers to use. My order was ready in 25 minutes as promised. A large vent is cut into the box so your chicken can stay crispy but with the glaze/sauce, not for long. No lukewarm, soggy chicken for me so I ate on the hood of my car in a near empty parking lot while poor TT watched from inside the car. From afar, I saw several other customers also car hood dining. Ok, so let's talk KFC... The Soy Sauce Garlic KFC is good and would have been better with an ice cold OB. But, yea.. You can only do so much with outdoor car hood dining. Not trying to get thrown in the slammer. The chicken wings were the highlight with a thin, crispy batter that easily soaks up the savory sweet glaze. The spicy has a subtle heat, not too spicy (I have a high heat tolerance). I think it's better than Bonchon but I'm in the minority here and like Von's better. Mainly because some of the drumsticks were overfried and suffered shrinkage. The accompanying radish was ok, a bit too salty for me and I prefer it colder. I ate 2 drumsticks and 2 wings and I was full. But if I was liquored up, I could easily eat the 5 pc minimum per person and then some. I originally bookmarked 99 Chicken because people compared them to San Tung. Don't get me wrong, 99 Chicken is good but San Tung is Chinese-Korean and in a different league - the wings are meatier and crispier with a more garlicky-ginger finger-licking, sticky glaze (that msg though!). SO in SoMa "was" the closest to San Tung's wings but they've closed. Overall, I enjoyed the KFC at 99 Chicken and I'm glad to finally knock it off my dusty bookmarks. If you're craving KFC and want to support a small business who's taking COVID-19 safety precautions seriously, give 99 Chicken a try! read more

I usually don't rant too often about bad service at a restaurant but today I went to 99 chicken over in Santa Clara, our go to spot for Korean chicken and their side bar with veggies and rice. Usually I'd get a few plates of sides to eat with my chicken but today they yelled at my wife and me for getting more than one plate of veggies. It was so off putting and I didn't want to eat anymore. There's no sign saying one plate of sides per person, it's an open salad bar basically. THE KOREAN GUY, with bad behavior (around40-50year old) pointed his finger at my wife and was yelling that this isn't a salad place. We've never been this rudely treated ever before. So it's the last time we're going here. Just a disappointment, no wonder the place was so empty when we went in, they used to not be rude. read more

These pieces are huge! Even though the price is a bit high compared to Bon Cho, I would chose this place over it. We ordered via the phone for pick up and everything was quick. 10 pieces may not seem like a lot but like I said these pieces are huge. I couldn't finish it in one sitting and it tasted great for next day leftovers Currently Mask is required for entry when picking up food. read more

Order selections are #1-10. Reasonable pricing and great fried chicken that can be sauced. It's large in content and not the bite sized ones. My appetite only allows for one (1) along with sides. It's more of a pickup/togo type of place. A few tables available for dine-in with restrictions. Dine-in requirement is a purchase of five (5) pieces of chicken per person. Salad bar and rice pot are only for dine-in patrons. Self served for dine-in. read more

99 Chicken is a well-known establishment in the area, and although I've been to Sushi o sushi next door, I haven't had the opportunity to check out the Korean fried chicken at 99 Chicken until today. Turns out it's some of the best chicken I've had. For dine in, one of the special perks is access to the salad bar packed with kimchi, radishes, sauces, salads, and rice which is included complimentary with your chicken meal. Caveat is that each person needs to order at least 5 pieces of chicken. That's not an issue, because I simply could not get enough of the chicken. I ordered the combo chicken, which comes with original, sauce, and spicy sauce mix. Spicy is really spicy and I wish we could have gotten another flavor instead of having two similar tasting preparations, but in the end, my partner and I polished the plate. Needless to say, we will soon be returning for more. It's now one of our favorite places for Korean fried chicken, second to Von's. Pros: Very reasonable prices, fast service. Complimentary salad bar. Great tasting fried chicken. Cons: Can be a little tight in the restaurant. No outdoor seating. read more

This OG Korean Fried Chicken spot has always been one of my favorite places for Korean Fried Chicken. Recently got to try it again when I was in the area and they never missed a step. The chicken is perfectly seasoned, fried to golden perfection, and then smothered in the amazing spicy and sweet sauce...yum. They offer gloves to enjoy the chicken with, but I don't wear the gloves just so I can get the finger licking good satisfaction.. Sounds funny, but true! The courtesy salad bar is perfect with things I love to eat with my KFC - steamed rice, salad, steamed veggies, and pickled daikon. Simple and perfect. I love it. read more

All the sauces are good except their spicy sauce, it tasted like dish soap for some reason.... Also, it's unlimited side dishes with unlimited rice! Defintiely can get your fill if you do it right but can be super expensive if you just stick to chicken only. Fun experience and fun to see all the photos. This is defintiely the original Korean fried chicken establishment and longest standing one in the south bay area. read more

SOOOO SMACKKK. My group always come here and once we came before closing desperately and sweet lady took us in It tastes better than BON CHON FOR SURE. Self serve rice and sides. A lot of tables. Really cool ambiance, walls are covered in pictures of customers. There's beer, and sodas available. You can bring groups of 2-8. Maybe more but i see plenty of tables. Easy parking. Honestly it's a must try. Tasty tasty tasty. You can do spicy, and there are sandwiches and honey flavor. read more

My kids wanted fried chicken so we thought we'd give this spot a try. Well after we decided to order, the lady tells us that we need to order 1.5 orders of fried chicken in order to dine in! WTF. Plus she wasn't even nice, rude. No wonder they have low scoring on yelp! There's four of us - an elderly, myself, an 8yo and 1.5yo. But she expects us to place 1.5 orders. We can't even finish that. We left. Never coming here again. No need to try the food if their service and policy is poor. But then again the place was empty. We were the only party and someone came to place an order for take out. I'd give it a negative star if possible. read more

I stopped going here after I had a bad experience with their customer service and cleanliness years ago, but my family and I continue to order take out because it's only a street away from where we live! The chicken they serve is big and very filling. I recommend the soy sauce chicken! The spicy is a bit too spicy for me, but eating it with rice and radishes helps cleanse your palate. You can also buy a bottle of soju from them to fulfill your korean food indulgence!! read more

Service. The woman with blonde highlights lied about two people being able to be seated at a 6 person table. Everyone else at at a 6 person table was two to the table. She overheard me talking to my boyfriend about how it didn't make sense and that they only offered to clear a 4 person table after I declined the table toward the back. Asked me what we wanted to order and I said we aren't ready, we will take waters. Then she proceeded to berate me. She told me that there were no other available tables which is why two people were seated to 6 person tables. Oh really? 3 different tables seated in that manner when one was clean and ready for us? I said I don't want to talk about it and that I would order later. She started cleaning a table and then turned to yell at me saying that she didn't need to provide me with service and that I could leave. I snapped some photos before leaving. This place is 3 stars for a reason. Probably should be far less. read more

They have the worst service and you have to follow their stupid rules. You can't go to the salad bar until you get your chicken and they straight up treat you like you're stupid. The new management is very disrespectful and treat you like they don't need your business. I will never recommend this place I would rather go to Vons chicken or Bon Chon. This place is trash just like the people who work there. Oh and by the way the chicken was dry AF and the oil used was probably old too. read more

Holy cluck, this place has a lot of reviews, and I am only just adding to the continued rave of Korean deep fried chicken fanatics who frequent this joint. It's truly something that needs to be enjoyed if you're in the area if you want some solid fried protein. My friend and I visited 99 Chicken recently because it was one of the few late night spots in Santa Clara. Little did I realize that it would be right next to a few restaurants and bars that I've also frequented in the area. Everything really is convenient here in the South Bay. 99 Chicken has a fairly simple menu- they serve large pieces of fried chicken that can be soaked in a sauce of your choosing. Each plate sets you back around $16 and comes with roughly ten pieces of chicken. Once you order, they go straight to work in battering, deep frying, and covering it in whatever glaze you want. We went for the honey and spicy fried chicken by splitting a plate in half, so we got five of each. The honey fried chicken was bomb simply because it stayed true to the original fried chicken recipe that they have. I would pass on the spicy sauce one since it really was not that spicy nor tasty. While you wait for your chicken, they offer a great salad bar and complimentary white rice on the side. You can seriously feed and package yourself a meal here which is likely why so many people choose to come here. I enjoyed my experience at 99 Chicken despite the spicy chicken not meeting expectations. Go for the classic fried and you will not be disappointed. read more

I've been going to 99 chicken for the last 15 years when it was still with the original owners. Within the last few years, it is now owned by a new family and I hear the original owners are back in Korea. This was one of the first Korean Fried chicken restaurants opened in the bay area. They have an open self-serve salad bar that consists of salad, radish, rice, broccoli, cabbage salad and dressing. These things are all free but only if you dine in. I love their cubed radishes and I love the fact that they give you unlimited amounts of it, which is very rare to find. The chicken can be hit or miss regarding the size of the chicken. Sometimes they're kind of skinny and other times they have a lot of meat. But the flavors are always on point and the chicken is always crispy. I've tried all of their chicken flavors from original, to their house sauce, to their soy sauce. My favorite flavor is soy sauce. The soy sauce flavor has a sweet yet soy saucy flavor to it. it's hard to explain and I can see how it sounds disgusting if you think it's straight soy sauce flavored chicken. AllI can say is, it's not soaked in pure soy sauce. All the flavors can get pretty overwhelming because they do slap on a lot of sauce in their sauce flavored chicken. However, I like to order a side of fries to help combat and neutralize all the saltiness. Don't forget they also have free rice! Service can be really hit or miss as well here. Sometimes the owners are intense, but I don't care. They're quick to order and the food comes out fast. I'm not here for service, I'm here for chicken. read more

Peace love and chicken grease!!! This place is a hole in a wall but it's so good. Simple greasy goodness. My friends brought me here for dinner and I wasn't sure what to expect from it until I looked at the Yelp page. I was told they are bomb and i would love it because the rice and the salad bar is unlimited self serve too. but joking aside they are pretty good for dine in. Only issue is since the place is pretty small seating is very limited. They cook the chicken up front so you can see what's going on behind the counter. I'd assume this place would be great if you are really on one. I'm a fan so I'll be visiting when I'm around the South Bay again. read more

It's been a while since I've been back for some yummy fried chicken. Made a stop for dinner with the family. We decided on #1 fried chicken, #2 spicy sauce chicken and #4 Honey chicken. Summary: I personally would not come back here. It's casual and unpolished like drunk food, but the food wasn't good enough any one way to me to make me crave more. They note peanut allergies, so beware! Good: I thought their soy garlic sauce was a saving grace in terms of chicken. If I went back, this is the only one I would buy. I liked the idea of the salad bar too, and appreciated the complementary white rice. Generally, there was a good portion of chicken, and the chicken generally was juicy. Bad: I thought the chicken was pretty bland and underseasoned even for KFC, and I thought the house and honey glaze sauces did poorly to complement. Pockets of the chicken were overcooked and tough. My go-to place for chicken!! This is the best korean fried place in town, and my Korean friends agree! Whenever someone's new in town, this is where I'm taking them. Cannot recommend it enough, the food is delicious, there's a salad bar that comes with your chicken, and it feels like you're in Korea. Delicious Korean fried chicken! Served fresh, hot, and super juicy. Came here on a Saturday for lunch. They have a 2 plate per person policy for their open salad bar. The server will give you the plates for use. It is still free refills for the salad bar for dine-in only. It was about a 10 minute wait for the food and it was definitely worth it. Got a half/half plate which came out to $27.99 + tax. Each piece is so crispy and smothered with sauce which pools to the bottom of the plate. The last piece of chicken was still just as crunchy and flavorful as the first. The interior is a bit small. There was one server for the whole place taking care of hosting, seating, taking orders, cleaning tables, and cashing out diners. So please be respectful and patient with them! I'm surprised that this place doesn't have better reviews! Of all the Korean fried chicken joints out there, 99 chicken is hands down my favorite. I prefer this restaurant over Vons, BonChon, etc. Their fried chicken is extremely crispy without being dry and the meat is tender. For $3, you can opt for all wings. We tried the standard before (6 drums & 4 wings), but didn't enjoy it. The drums had too much meat for our liking and was more dry than the wings. Ever since then, we've always upgraded to all wings. Disposable gloves are provided which is extremely helpful so you don't get sauce all over your hands. On the topic of sauces, the garlic soy sauce flavor is our favorite (comes in mild and medium), but we have only tried this and the honey. The honey sauce was a bit too light for us as we like a saucier and more flavorful coating. Flavor-wise, I prefer BonChon's soy garlic sauce more. When you eat in, they have an AYCE complimentary rice & salad bar. I love that they provide rice and don't charge $2/bowl like most other Korean fried chicken places do. For to go orders, they give you a container and charge $2/box for salad items. 99 chicken is the place I'm always craving. At the end of the meal, I still want to eat more and wish I was still hungry. We've eaten here 6-7 times and the food has always been consistent. I've never had a bad experience here. This is a great little "hole in the wall" spot. Walls are covered with pictures of guests, several hundred pictures... The place isn't big, but being that it's stood the test of time , it's got something done right. Dining in, you can get all the salad you want, and a big rice cooker to accompany the main attraction- fried chicken. The goto has to be the soy sauce chicken. When I eat here with the family, we usually order 2, sometimes 3 orders. Nothing beats fried chicken and white rice. The soy sauce chicken is really good fried chicken, covered in a soy glaze, almost like a thin coat of honey. It's sweet, yet savory. A definite must try. I've tried the Korean sauce chicken as well, but it's got a sweet tomato, ketchupy sauce. I'm more a savory guy, but others may like it. read more

I'm so sad they change owner. Usually when I order my soy chicken Togo it would still be crispy by the time I get home. This time it was so soggy. I ask the lady on the phone to please put a note to make it extra crispy too.
