This probably my favourite chicken place. #9 Soy sauce garlic, spicy. The parking lot is kind of small, so when this place gets busy, it's hard to find parking. They're also fighting with honey berry and their next door neighbor restaurant. They have a good amount of tables, and a back room for a large party. Seating is always full when it gets busy. The Chicken They have a minimum of 5 pieces per person, but these are not small wings you're ordering. These are large drumsticks, and drumstick+wing pieces. They are fried in a way that keeps them super juicy. Each order usually comes in 10 pieces, so with 3 people you are required to order 2 plates... which is a lot. The Salad Bar If you're eating in, you get a complementary salad bar. Steamed broccoli, mixed greens, cole slaw, pickled radishes, pickled jalapenos, white rice, barley tea, iced water. You get all of this included in the price of the chicken, and it's self-serve, all you can eat / drink. I don't use gloves. Chicken = finger food and thus should be eaten accordingly. As for the decor, back in the day, they had a camera, and you can request to have your table's picture taken and put up. I went with a large group a while ago and had this happen, but I have not found the picture yet. This is a family owned restaurant and the owners don't speak the best English. They don't smile too too much, but they're working hard to make a living. A lot of this is self serve, but if you're ordering alcohol like soju, or beer, they'll get that for you, and bring out your chicken. I don't think you should be expecting much service here, so expectations met. Highly recommended, and will return. read more

The dark horse entry for the best Korean chicken in San Jose.. I say that with spite and conviction after a disappointing outing at Banchan's a few days earlier. This visit was a late night dinner; once again staving from the nerd convention. We originally planned on ordering 4 plates of chicken (1 per person) but the owner looked at us like we were crazy and told us only to get 3. Lucky we listened.. The wings are HUGE! I was honestly expecting little baby chicken wings; you know like the other guys.. Sauc Scores: Honey Chicken 4* Garlic Soy 5* - The champ here! It was a perfect balance of both Soy and Garlic. Most of the time you get one overpowering the other. Spicy Sauce 3* - I was expecting straight up Ko Chu Jang fire but it was more like a sweet mongolian heat. It was ok; but not for me. The ban-chan, salad and just about everything else is self serve here. Some people may bitch about this but hey, that's just the way it is here. I am not sure why people are so butthurt and hell bent on not having to serve themselves at a restaurant, I am fine with it.. No need to wait for anyone. I see that a lot of people complain about the service(or lack thereof) and about the rules or the owner. I understand this issues as there are many K-pop groups and non-native people and college people who live around here. They either are cheap, don't tip (non-customary in their homeland) or squat on the tables! With the limited space, I can see why there are rules.... I came here at first during lunch to have them tell me in another language that the restaurant served nothing but chicken. I asked them about the other half of the menu and they told me they don't serve that. So I came back for dinner instead so I'd be able to order from the half of the menu. We got the fried chicken plate. The drumsticks are way bigger than the pictures make them out to be so don't get too carried away and think they're bite-sized. The fried chicken was average but maybe because I'm not a fan of fried chicken. The breading is tastier and thinner than KFC's. I really wanted to like the kimchi fried rice but the spiciness overtook any taste I could have possibly experienced. I can't handle spicy foods obviously. The Squid Bok Um noodles were tasty and regardless of what the menu says, this isn't spicy at all. Parts of the restaurant are self-serve. The rice, salad, and utensils are yours to grab which makes sense when you're dealing with fried chicken. It saves the trouble asking the waiter for more napkins 5 times. Well the chicken here is a good partition. Its not the freeze bag drumettes size, but not a giant turkey leg either. The restaurant is shaped kinda odd, especially in the group room which can fit 8-10 people; the rest of the tables fit 4 but its a tight fit. The group room is outfitted with black lights, so dress to impress and glow... They offer other things such as chicken...rice plates...and I don't remember the rest. The owners were really nice and provided a great explanation on their food, such as, eating their chicken will make you strong like Popeye and have the skills of Bruce Lee. They have a salad bar in front of the counter which has: corn, cole slaw, salad, white ...dice-something, ...that's it? If you order alcohol, they provide you pop corn which is actually tastes good. It took a while, but I've finally been to 99 Chicken, and it's totally worth all the hype. I honestly had no idea what to expect. Chicken isn't one of my go-to foods. I'm usually a pho, steak, or burrito kind of guy. I was honestly expecting a KFC or a Wingstop or something... and what's with Wingstop? Why does everybody like it so much? They're just wings you dip in different seasonings. Borrring. But 99 Chicken... for the price you pay? The size of the drumsticks you get? Damn. I've tried a few pieces of chicken from their menu, and not one of them tastes bad at all. Not to mention you get all-you-can-eat what rice and salad. If there's any complaint I have about this place, it would be the size. It's really small. You might even have to wait for a table. Now I know why it's mandatory to tip. At first I thought that the restaurant was trying to take care of their workers since they probably receive a certain crowd that never tips... Sides, rice, everything on your own. On too of that, we were never checked on. After they visited us those two times, that was it. We had to go up to them to get the check and boxes as well. This might as well have been a wingstop!! Why WOULD people tip? (I mean I would've tipped anyway, I always do. But, I thought it was ridiculous that they demanded the tip and did not perform many services). Also, it's a mandatory order of 5 chicken per person. We ordered 50 just because we wanted to try the flavors... But after we ordered the guy really counted how many people we had and if we got enough. We had kids, c'mon! Even I couldn't eat 5 pieces. Took them home so not to waste but honestly, I don't think we'll even them. The honey chicken is literally just fried chicken with honey on too. Gross! And the spicy chicken tastes like ketchup mixed with something spicy and drenched on top of the chicken. 2 stars because they're soy chicken was very good.... But that was already being awfully generous. Bathrooms are disgusting and smelly, tape all over the bottom of the toilet to seal it... Sticky floors. Made me rethink if the staff were even washing their hands enough. Maybe I should deduct a star? I don't think I'll ever come back here. Thank God for Yelp. Since I was being indecisive (as usual), we ended up getting the Combo plate. After sitting there for some time, I asked my friend what was up with the self serve salad up front. He laughed and said "This is your first time in a Korean joint?" All I heard was the word "FREE." Up I went, trotted to the bar, grabbed a plate and filled it with some iceberg lettuce, blanched broccoli, sliced up corn and jalapenos. I spooned on some of their salad dressing (not the sweet tasting one) and I forked away at my vegetables. First up was the Kimchee Fried Rice.. It was okay-- I think I prefer Kimchee as a side dish and not infused into fried rice. Onto the Chicken.. Yay!! It was everything the yelpers said it would be. Light and crispy, super tender and juicy. The spicy flavor really catches up with you so watch out. I personally loved it, but just a warning to the folks who don't tolerate heat too well. The Honey flavor was also only "okay" just because I'm not into honey at all.. Too sweet for me. The Mild sauce was another winner. I had to take 1 star off for the bathroom. Nice atmosphere, but the chicken is pretty average. On Saturday, we ordered 70 wings - 20 fried, 20 honey, 20 soy sauce, and 10 sauce - and none of them really stood out to me. The honey was just the regular one with some generic honey dripped over it - a little bland for my tastes. The fried was also good, but lacked some seasoning or spices to make it more flavorful. My favorite was the soy sauce, but it didn't "pop" to me this time as in previous times. We avoided the spicy sauce chicken because it's just the regular chicken with the table spicy sauce on top (why pay an extra dollar for that?). It was pretty disappointing to read the reviews and see how AMAZING this place is supposed to be...maybe my expectations were too high? I've come here twice for dinner with big groups (7-10) on weekends, so maybe when they hit that crunch their quality suffers. I did really like their open salad bar for pairing with the fried chicken. The mixed greens, jalapenos, and picked radish are excellent. It's also nice to go to a mom-and-pop kind of place. The owners came out a couple times to marvel at how much we were eating (70 wings for 7 people!) and seem like nice people you'd want to support. Overall, I liked the place and the vibe (and the location as Honeyberry is right next door!), but I didn't really have such an amazing experience to think about going all the time. I read the reviews and decided to come here for a quick appetizer before dinner this evening. I can't handle really spicy stuff so I ordered 2pc fried chicken for $3.99 and got it to go. They said I'd have to wait about 17 mins. The chickens were REALLY salty and oily, but tasted decent because I was really hungry. I thought it was a bit expensive for just 2 pcs... $2 for just one chicken... that can be a cup of froyo at yogurtland! There were a lot of "No's" that I got from them... I'm sitting at the restaurant right now. This is my first time coming here to eat and immediately my first impression of this place was negative. I haven't even ordered my food and the service SUCKED. I had to try multiple times to get the waiters attention. There's only ONE person who's taking orders for the entire restaurant, seriously? I understand that there's only one person so he can't be attentive to everyone. But when I finally got him to come to my table to answer some questions my friends had, he didn't clearly answer any of em. I asked about a specific sauce and he just blabbed on about the spiciness. At least 4 people have recommended this place to me, and I was so excited to get my grub on, so I'm really bummed that it was such an underwhelming experience. We first came here about a year ago after a friend posted it on FB and we've loved it ever since. Was actually feeling it last night so we paid them a visit again and it's still just as yummy! In fact, for me, I think 99 Chicken makes some of the best fried chicken (aside from home). I love the light, crispy batter and the different sauces. My favs are the honey sauce and the spicy sauce, even though it's not spicy enough for me. If you're not a sauce fan, order the original fried chicken and use the sauces they provide on the table. The restaurant itself is definitely nothing fancy. It has a fast food feel to it (with hundreds of photos of past customers adorning the walls) and is average sized with a decent number of tables. Aside from them taking your order and serving you the food, everything else is DIY, including getting your own water/tea. They provide disposable plates, bowls and cutlery for easy clean-up. There's also a small, complimentary salad bar with 2 choices of dressings and a rice cooker to help yourself with white rice. I give them a huge star for the size of their wings! When the beer was brought out it was delivered with a bowl of ever so slightly sweet "popcorn" that I enjoyed very much. As we waited for the chicken, I went to check out the salad bar. It is indeed small, but it's FREE, so who's complaining? There were a few different varieties of greens, some peppers, and two kinds of dressing. The greens looked fresh and I scooped up a whole plate to bring back to the table with me. The chicken arrived within a few minutes and was piping hot. Pieces are HUGE. I believe there were 4 drumsticks and 1 wing of each type. The original fried was very good; kinda reminiscent of something my mom would make at home. Dry batter instead of wet, so it's not overly greasy, and the chicken was moist. I indulged in the free rice and then added some hot sauce (that was slightly sweet as well) and ate them all together. So Asian, haha, but very yummy. Next I moved onto the sauce chicken...OMG! My tastebuds jumped for joy. Very saucy, but the chicken maintained its crunch very well, even the pieces that I ate at the very end. When I switched back to the original, it just didn't seem as flavorful or standout. The feel of the restaurant is very casual. Pictures of other happy customers fill the walls, alone with various posters of movies or dramas. We ate off of styrofoam plates, but they did have real utensils. Small clean metal buckets sat at each table for us to place the bones in. The bathroom was clean, but it could be cleaner, if you know what I mean? There was a ring in the toilet bowl, but it didn't smell or have anything blatantly dirty. Honestly, the chicken here isn't that bad. This place wouldn't be my first choice if I was craving chicken though. I think the customer service is more of a factor as to why I won't be coming back. When my group of five friends and I got seated, we weren't greeted. The owner just kind of dropped the menus on the table and left. There's a rule that if you go in big groups, you have to have a certain amount of orders - 3 in our case. My to go order for my boyfriend didn't count. We felt rushed having to order a third portion, and the owner just wrote down soy sauce chicken when my friend asked for something different. I went up a little after we ordered to ask if I could pay for my to go order so I could just get it out of the way. The owner didn't seem as grumpy then. When we finished eating, I went up with my friend so he could pay and the bill still included my order.... That I had already paid for. I'm quite late at writing this review, but we still remember the atrocious service we received! From the moment we sat down, we were rushed. Came here with friend last night. Didn't know what to really expect since I've never had Korean chicken wings lol the place is kinda odd looking, you walk in and there's just a whole bunch of pictures of guests lining the walls... Like EVERYWHERE. It didn't take a us long to be seated about 5 mins, just waited till someone got up. While we were waiting though a customer got up and left because the food took to pong, the Korean owner guy wasn't too happy... He started yelling in English, but with his accent it sounded like angry gurgling...HILARIOUS lol But anyways, we ordered the combo platter and the kimchee hot pot soup. The chicken is really just like anyone chicken wing except they have their own style of sauce, it's not mind blowing, but it's good lol None of the 4 different flavors really stuck out though, but they were all good. Yums Love THIS PLACE Went here 2x in one week. Ex went here 3x in one week, in a row. I don't care if you take my review into consideration or not. I'm not basing this because of the hype but because the food is actually delicious and the service is super friendly and nice. They are accommodating. So the 1st time we come here its like 11am and we craving some grubbing. It was this or Lee's Noodle House ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/hwOXvHIwmOOVDiwLsubN9A ), course we chose here! I took a whole mess of pics and ordered the 5 pcs meal for 6-7$ and I like it a lot. The chicken smells very fragrant and tantalizing.There is like no fat or skin on the chicken [the skin is there of course obviously just very thin]. The crust/breading is crispy and thin. Not oily at all and light. It's like a miracle to be eating healthy food that is fried. Love wings pack a kick and are delicious lil firewings. 2nd time. GET THE COMBINATION PLATE 15$ !!! I LOVE THE HONEY CHICKEN MMMM!!!!! ITS SO MOTHEREFFING DELICIOUS! BTW the spicy sauce chicken comes w/ peanuts coated on it, so if you are allergic....then RIP!!! jp. The honey chicken is sweet yet savory. I love the simple paradox of flavors. The honey on the chicken just made it crispier because it would caramelize....ITS JUST SO GOOD! btw I got mad at my ex when she went w/ HER ex to 99 chicken and didn't get anything for me on the way back. THAT IS HOW GOOD IT IS! I completely ignored the fact that she was w/ her ex even though she is now my ex. I just wanted the chicken. Salad bar is yummy and very simple. I love the coleslaw, broccoli & corn. The green sauce has a wasabi kick to it. I like it. Service is extremely accommodating and kind. We were able to substitute the original on the combination for the honey. They took our pic and pretty much gave us whatever we asked for. Facts/trivial They use cotton seed oil to cook their food. It keeps cholesterol down and reduces the fat/oil of the food. It doesn't give the meat a weird aftertaste and cottonseed lasts longer than other oils. Chicken not cooked till ordered. read more

So I returned after calling to verify they were open during typical business hours. They were open..woo hoo! So I'm anxious to get there only to discover a horrible nightmare of a parking lot. If you know what I mean by the east side..then enough said. I walk in and this place is completely empty. There is an unpleasant smell in the air and an old man/woman sucking n slurpin' away at their lunch. It was apparently the staff or owners. Limited English is spoken here folks. I ordered the two piece fried chicken and he told me to wait 15 minutes. I was like WTF!! I started to look around and saw a never-ending mural of hideous pics of diners all while KBAY was blasted through the speakers. The guy then starts wacking away with the fly swatter near the joke of a salad bar. Gross!!The chicken finally came out but for the price I paid I got ripped off. $4+ = 2 small pieces of chicken No biscuit, No Soda, No Mashed Potatoes & Gravy..NO NOTHING!?! The chicken was good..but I wouldn't go as far as to say it would replace KFC, Popeye's etc. I would say it's not as greasier but hello folks the fat is what makes it yummy. Plus the portions here are tiny. My dad makes better chicken in his fryer at home without even trying. This place is way overrated and I will never return. I'm so upset I bailed out on KFC for this stank place. Maybe I'm bitter cuz my pic wasn't taken and posted up. Then again I'm not Asian nor was I accompanied by an Asian person. Decent food, terrible service. Evens out to an uncomfortable okay as I'm clearly willing to swallow the rudeness for delicious chicken. The most popular menu item relating to chicken is definitely the half and half which allows for two different sauce choices. My favorite combo is the honey and spicy sauce. Dipping the opposite flavors in the extra sauce is also fantastic and I highly recommend it. Like most Korean places, there are some side dishes that are self-serve and all you can eat available. These include two types of salad (mixed greens and lettuce), two dressing options which include a peanut sauce and a creamy thousand islandesque option, radish and steamed rice. Water is also self-serve. I don't mind this aspect as you can take however much you want and customize as you go along. One of the biggest shortfalls about this restaurant is the service. I'm not high maintenance but it would be nice to be greeted amicably by the owner instead of with disdain. Our dishes were thrown down without a second glance. We were on our last pieces of chicken when the check was slid in between us to rush us out. Then as we were clearing off the rest of our sides we were asked to hurry up and pay as others were waiting. If I recall correctly, we also waited for our table and were actually still eating. Now unrelated to taste and service, my stomach was a little upset after eating here on my most recent visit. I suspect it has something to do with salad bar as it did look like it had been sitting outside for a while. There's a lot of fried chicken places in the area and the culmination of all these events has put me off the restaurant. Probably won't be back as Bon Chon and Chimek are nearby. read more

99 Chicken - Half honey and half sauce wings - Korean Near Me - Santa Clara, California

Came in on a Saturday around 3:30pm.. we were seated immediately which was great. Our order was taken promptly. We ordered the combination of wings (2 spicy, 3 sauce, 2 honey, and 3 fried), 5 extra pieces of the spicy soy-garlic wings as well as some french fries. The french fries came out in about 5 minutes. The quality of the fries were 5/5 (super crunchy & worth the price). The wings on the other hand took awhile (roughly 30 minutes to come out). The spicy ones were not as spicy as I expected. There was also too much sauce on the wings which I dislike. The spicy soy-garlic wings were pretty good (7/10). The total of the wings & fries came out to around $42. Although the wings weren't my preferred flavor, there was definitely tons of meat on them which is worth the price. read more

Ah, another great late night option in the Santa Clara 'hood. Excellent. The owners were very pleasant and happy to feed us. With six of us there, we ordered SIXTY pieces (wings and drumsticks). Yeah, that's right - 60. Well, we thought that we were getting the special they had which was 60 pieces for 60 bucks or something like that. However, it turns out (and we discovered this after the bill was delivered to us) that since we ordered 20 fried, 20 regular sauce, and 20 spicy sauce pieces, he charged us for individual orders of chicken instead of giving us the deal price. (Each individual order's about 14 bucks.) That made us kind of sad since we were very gleeful about saving some monies this time around. :-P The chicken did take awhile to get to our table after our order - I think we must have waited a good 40 minutes before we got anything. It was super tasty and piping hot. Delicious. My favorite's the spicy sauce one, but others at the table preferred the plain fried chicken with some of the salt/MSG/pepper seasoning that was at the table. For the most part, the chicken came out cooked through, but one of my friends found that one or two pieces of his weren't, so beware. The place also has a free, bare-bones salad bar, though none of us had room for it with all that chicken in front of us. Actually, I take that back; someone did manage a small dish of mixed greens to nibble on; I guess he wanted to delude himself into thinking that he actually had a healthy meal. :-P Anyway, definitely a good option if you're up late and want a place to hang out with your friends. We were there til midnight when they told us kindly that they were closing. (This was a Tuesday night.) We'll probably be back again at some point! read more

I practically played a game of charades with the non-English speaking Korean owner. I walked to the appetizer bar and started gesturing in front of the whole restaurant, trying to figure out whether a dish was served hot or cold. --Confusion-- He then brought me a can of Korean clams from the kitchen (I still have no idea why) and started pointing vigorously at that. --More confusion-- If you come here, I'd probably stick with the fried chicken. I don't get it either. 4 stars out of 395 reviews. Maybe that set our expectations a little too high? I realized that this much-talked-about place was down the street when we went bowling the other night. I was reading the reviews about it on the way there and couldn't wait to try their fried chicken! We sit down and couldn't figure out what to order. We decided on the "sampler" and some chicken wings. By watching the other customers, we figured out that bucket on the table was for our bones...and that we could get up and get our own rice, veggies and salad. The place was small and busy and we had to wait in line to get water or any of the "fixin's" mentioned above. The chicken was....eh. For us, it tasted like chicken that was simply fried in oil. I'm not sure if they marinate it, season it, or what....but that's what it tasted like. Just chicken. No salt. No spice. No flavor. There were spicy and sweet sauces (and honey?) that came with the chicken. It made the chicken somewhat better, but still, not enough to render a second visit from us. read more

Still dig this place! So me and my gf were adventuring to that new korean chicken spot on el camino, we drove there and it was completely empty hahaha. thats never a good sign so we ended up back at 99 chicken. We love the chicken here and i love the damn canned corn at the salad bar!!! I dunno why but we've yet to drink and eat chicken. maybe next time =) read more

Met old friends at Santa Clara Korean restaurant 99 Chicken. It's a pretty small restaurant. And they used the customers pictures and Korean TV show posts as the wallpaper. The food is OK. I ordered the octopus. It just tastes very salty. And my friends ordered the chickens. The spicy one is too spicy for me. Just after one, I was done. The fried one tastes like KFC. I don't know what's in the food, I felt so thirsty. One good thing is they offer unlimited free tea and salad. read more
