Amazing food! Good service! Fair ambiance. You have to make reservations or wait for a table, and it took a surprising amount of time, but then we realized it was cause they had called us once "quietly" and when we did not respond they moved on. When they found out what happened they were very apologetic and kind, and seated us quickly. They boy who served us was sweet and generous. And the food was so good, amazing gluten-free burgers and sandwiches. The building itself seemed a little dirty, but it had a nice retro feel. Over all I would give it a high 4! read more

The space is basically an upgraded version of Denny's. The portion size was good and the food was pretty good. Especially because I order vegetarian omelette with egg whites, they can tend to be a little boring but I felt like this one had a lot of flavor. The prices were pretty good as well. Went for the first time recently with a buddy who said that food was the best in town. We walked in and it was not busy with waiter finding things to "look busy". It took about 20 minutes for a server to even come to our table to ask for our drinks. Once the food came to our table ( I ordered the SLO jack) it was one piece of tri-tip with jack cheese that seemed to have been microwaved. Why would I go to a restaurant for a microwaved sandwich. Good diner food and quick, great service. My coffee was always full. I ordered breakfast - eggs, bacon, biscuit and gravy, and hash browns. The hash browns weren't crispy, which was fine with me, but I'd probably order them more well done next time. The eggs were standard over-easy eggs, the gravy was pretty good, and the bacon was good quality, thick bacon - not the flimsy un-flavorful sort you often find at diners. The restaurant is roomy and has a lot of tables. Kind of a funny layout, but the building originally housed a Carl's Jr., so it makes sense. I don't go to Atascadero too often for breakfast, but I would come back here. Their omelettes looked good, and I'd actually like to try lunch next time. I eat here often and have a lot more good experiences than bad. Food is good. The breakfast burrito is to die for and service is ok. It was a beautiful day so we wanted to eat outside on their patio. Well come to find out you have to order your food to-go and take it outside. No plates and no service. Not very happy about that. So if you go don't eat outside. In the past if I had any problem with the service I'd tell the owner and he would make it right. Too many good experiences to list here. I recommend to all. read more

Went with my family and we all really enjoyed our food. My daughter got grilled cheese with side of fruit from the kids menu. Great fruit side even had a blackberry in it. My dad got pastrami and was stacked up nice he enjoyed it a lot. Mom got a Cobb turkey burger and said it was great. My wife got the Philly cheesesteak and said it was cooked perfect and loved it. I got chicken fried steak and was thoroughly impressed. Nice portion 2 sides flavored to perfection. It was cooked just right flakey not burnt and piping hot. First visit for late 2:30 lunch. We both had the fish & chips. Waitress did state fish came in frozen not freshly made, which I knew best not to order. Four greasy pieces served in paper lined plastic basket on top of thin dry krinkle cut fries. Please pass the condiments, all of them! Staff not too sharp or particularly friendly, never did ask if we wished a drink refill. This place makes me long for the "Silver Diner" back in MD. Hubby and I are local and have been here about 4 times. Each time we thought the food was terrible. I already decided a long time ago that I wouldn't go back fro breakfast ever again. Since they messed up scrambled eggs and the potatoes tasted greasy and burned. Worst breakfast of my life. The other couple of times we said we would never go back but wound up there because we met friends and each time the food could only be described as mediocre at best. The waitresses will tell you extras like biscuits and gravy come with your breakfast but when you get the bill there is a 4.95 up charge. They should tell you that! I git the Philly cheese-steak last night and they said fried zucchini sticks came with it as one of my options (fries, onions rings, etc....) well there was a 4.95 up-charge! Before getting into the review and why I believe the A-Town Diner is 5 star worthy I must state that it is based on expectations. This is a diner, not a steakhouse and not a fine dining establishment...simply a diner. With this being said, I drove past this place at least 4 times today and every time I witnessed a parade of people going in. The locals must know something. When I entered, I thought the decor was very much what I expected it to be and hoped for - to include the counter. I opted for a booth to be comfortable and kill a little time with my meal (I'm dining alone tonight and have a 7 o'clock appointment....sigh I was greeted by friendly staff and asked to seat myself. :-) The menu was a little less than I expected. When I think of diner food I believe there is more than salads, sandwiches and burgers. Well, they do have more, but not much more. I selected the daily special of all-you-can-eat spaghetti after observing several patrons indulging. I am so bad. I opted for the Marinara sauce over the meat sauce. The plate was swimming in sauce and for my preference, the pasta was a bit over cooked. When my waitress asked, I was honest with her and she offered to replace it. I said it was ok, just didn't blow me away. In fairness, I did order a 2nd plate and asked for it ala dente, less sauce and more cheese. That's what I got and it tasted so much better to me. All in all this is a welcoming location that is family friendly. Other than the carpet, everything appeared to be clean and well maintained. Check it out for yourself and see if you agree! read more

This my go to for a bacon cheeseburger when I fall off the wagon, about twice a week. There is nothing else between $4 In-N-Out, and good luck getting in and out, and a $15 burger on ciabatta bread (bleh). Cheeseburger in paradise (with bacon) Jimmy Buffett style, $7.60 out the door, they just raised it $1, almost giving them away B4. I was selfishly conflicted about posting this review lest they raise it another dollar. Comparable to Hoagie's in SLO/Pismo or other places that serve high-quality traditional burgers, but at about half the price. And, again, no f'g ciabatta bread. read more

Stopped here for breakfast twice recently while passing through town. Nice old-school diner atmosphere, friendly staff. We were seated promptly. We order off the "Value meal" section of the breakfast menu. The first time I had the French Toast meal and the second time the Eggs and bacon. Everything was prepared well and portions were generous. Definitely a good value for the $ 6.99 price. We'd stop here again when our travels take us through Atascadero again. read more

Came here for dinner on a Sunday, and there were quite a few people. They have a large menu, so there's something for everyone. I think if I go again, I will just get a milkshake or something. Ate breakfast here on a Friday morning around 0830. Parking was plentiful, interior was clean and spacious with booths and tables. Very typical diner. I had a Tri Tip omelette which was decent, nothing spectacular. The service was friendly and the food came out really fast. The place caters to a lot of locals and the waitresses knew what people wanted before they ordered. Two meals, a side of hash Browns, and two coffees was about $25. Really a great place. Very friendly staff and a nice outdoor seating area. The breakfast burrito with bacon and chorizo is what I got, and that is how a breakfast burrito should be made. Your fried chicken is absolutely disastrous, extremely dry to the point couldn't eat it the breading on it well let's just say it was 2/3rds of the mass of the chicken honestly thought it was Cornish game hen when I pulled all the breading off to try and get a meal out of it. Mashed potatoes dry as well and who doesn't serve gravy with mashed potatoes. Guess I'll stick to Virgil's burgers cuz that's hands down the worst fried chicken dinner I've ever paid 13.99 for and threw in the trash without consuming at least half of the dinner read more

Sunday, August 1, 2021. We enter the restaurant at a little past noon, less than half the tables are occupied. Looks like we missed the church crowds. The young hostess escorts my wife and I to the table, that she wipes down with a wet rag before seating us (yes, the table is wet) and we are asked what we are drinking (ice tea for both of us). The hostess is gone for several minutes. My wife got up to get us menus, at which time the hostess returns with our drinks (she never asked if we want lemon or anything for the tea) and menus. More time passes and a waitress finally arrives to take our orders. Wife states we are each having an A-Town Cluck (omelette with bacon, chicken, avocado and cheddar cheese). Waitress departs, we are alone in our corner booth, we chat and drink our ice tea. Food finally arrives. The omelettes appear flat, as if they've given up the will to be satisfying, the avocado is only three small pieces (not even a full sliver) on top. Waitress asks if we need anything else, I request the steve's sauce. She brings it to the table and dissappears like a ninja in the night. As we finish our omelettes, we conserve our drink, as we have not been offered a refill. We wait for anyone to come clear the dishes and bring the bill. Nothing, it is as if we are abandoned and left adrift in the back of the restaurant to fend for ourselves. We walk to the front of the diner, to see about paying. The waitress bluntly states the price. I pay and still leave a tip. Wife asks why I tipped, I answer because I want to escape the restaurant without drama. It appears not only the service, but the quality of food has declined over the last couple of years. It is hard to believe this was once a favorite place to go. It is nothing but a shell of its prior glory. Just about any other restaurant would be better than this place. read more

My girlfriend and I went for breakfast and sat in the outdoor patio. We took our 4 dogs and my mini horse. I had an omelet with hash brown's and my girlfriend had the biscuits and gravy. I'll start by saying I love A-town's breakfast. It's delicious and I especially love their breakfast burritos. I'll also say dinner there is great when you eat in. Take out...not so much. Three times now I've ordered various burgers that ended up absolutely ruined by all the pepper. I'm not talking too much for my personal preference, I'm talking scrape off with a napkin, all you can taste is pepper, and taste buds get fried amounts of pepper. The first time it happened we drove back, showed the staff, they were shocked, apologized, and made it again. Now I don't even bother. After today I won't even bother ordering takeout. This is truly the cafe Atascadero needs. The menu is very extensive for breakfast lunch and dinner and they even have desserts. Love this place! I have a severe avocado allergy and the waitress really wrote it on my ticket so the cooks would see to be careful! The food is the traditional fare and is as usual. They have a nice outside dining area set up. I just don't understand why the staff such as servers and bussers are not wearing masks. This is the first business I have been to where absolutely no employees are complying with the mask ordinance. It tells me that they dont care about their customers.
