I'm a huge fan of their food. Two things that could improve is 1) quantity. And the 2) Biriyani is not the traditional type. Our favourite chettinaadu , rather favourite grub in the South Bay. Poondu kuzhambu and mutton roast to die for. The aappams are yummy! If it's a cold day, nice to settle in with a cup of karuvapillai rasam or the aatukaal (mutton bone) soup. read more

We went here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The place is not very fancy, but the food is just finger licking good. We ordered the vegetable kurma with idiyappam, natikozhi kolambu with appam, baby corn manchurian and chapati with chicken curry. Food was all nicely prepared and was not too greasy. Pretty sure the food did not have soda. Their preparation is spicy, but I think that is the hallmark of food from the Chettinad region. They are reasonably priced too. They are one of the few places that have lime soda. O asked for it with sugar and salt, I wish I had ordered the traditional sweet lime soda. The mango lassi was good. Their filter coffee is to die for! I would certainly go back to this place every time I crave for some traditional Chettinad food. read more

Normally I go to Appakadai, Sunnyvale and love it. Today went to Santa Clara as it was on the way. What a terrible experience. The waiter was rude and arrogant. Firstly he served cold rasam. We told him that it was chilled (rasam is served very hot, so relatively it was chilled). The waiter caught to the word and not essence and started arguing. At one point I said ok its not hot but he kept on arguing. At one point he even showed us the way to door. Very disappointed with the behavior and customer service. Good Chetinad style restaurant with spicy and delicious fish and appam. Today's special fish (see attached) was nice. I think it should have been marinated a li'l longer to have been awesome. Recently, I ordered a bunch of items through Doordash. I have a mixed feeling since some of the items were good whereas some were disastrous. First, one of the great items was the Chicken Lollypop. The chicken was perfectly spiced and delicious and I highly recommend that item. However, the prime reason for the low rating is because of the biryani. I ordered the chicken biryani and honestly, this is one of the worst biryanis that I have ever had. In general, I don't have any particular preference for the regional flavor of a biryani. Typically, I try out Tamil, Telugu, North Indian, Bangladeshi and all other types. But this biryani was the worst that I tasted. First of all, the rice grains were overcooked and represented a sticky mess similar to the sticky rice that we get in Asian restaurants. Due to the stickiness of the rice, the spice was disproportionately spread and tasted terrible. I cannot believe how this thing can be served as biryani. In addition, I also ordered Chicken Butter Masala which was also lacking the right proportion of cream in the gravy. The chicken pieces were also too fibrous and didn't taste particularly succulent. It feels a little weird to see that in a restaurant where chicken lollypop tasted so well, that the biryani was so terrible. read more

Went to Aachi's with high hopes, but had my hopes dashed. Let's start with the Menu, they had Pomfret advertised on their menu, but on constant prodding they agreed it was pompano. They kind of made it seem like its innocuous mistake, but it's not. It's deliberate. We had the Pompano fry, we make better at home. Appam with Fish kolumbu, the fish kolumbu tasted more like a sambar (but maybe, that's how Chettinadu style tastes like). The appam's were better branded as a dosa or something of that kind. The only saving grace was the Mutton Soup. Service was nice, attentive & courteous. read more

One word: #ded. This stuff is pretty high scoville food.....and I'm Indian. They also cannot adjust spiciness levels on most dishes for you. Service is honestly really bad (waiter forgot our requests multiple times) but the place is bustling with loyalists. If you want to eat at a non-mainstream Indian restaurant and can eat really spicy, I still wouldn't suggest this place due to the bad service. As for the food itself: I was sweating and tearing up during the entire meal. My family and I had to ask for extra mango lassi to cool ourselves. To be fair, we ordered the Nattukozhi kolumbu (weekend-only chicken curry), which had a red chili indicator on the menu but even then I thought we'd be able to take it. Thanks to the slightly sweet tasting Appam, the curry was still fun to eat but I don't think I'll be able to order this dish again. Overall, Chettinad cuisine is so lovely and next time I crave it I will probably go to one of the other Bay Area eateries where spice level is manageable and service is actually decent. read more
