I am yet to find another place that makes appam like Aappakadai. Appam is a South Indian dish that is served with veg or non-veg stew or curry. It's a very very mildly sweet roti that's bulgi soft in the middle and super thin with holes on the sides. I always order the chef special paneer appam and it's always been super yummy (I don't eat the curry that come with it). Tip - it taste even better with the paneer tikka/butter masala (which isn't a part of the dish, it's a main course item, but goes so well with appam, I wish they made that combo some time in future) I have tried both the locations of Aappakadai and in my opinion they both are equally good. If your looking to give your tastebuds a change, I would recommend trying the appam . read more

I visit them quiet often. Overall they are OK. Their service is great. They have mostly South Indian menu. And a bit of Indo-chiense. They are really with South Indian food. I tried Fish 65, Idli and Idiyappam Everything was good, Idiyappam was awesome. Now coming to Indo-chiense items. I tried fried chicken noodles, I would give the 1 star. Chicken is very bland and in top of that they don't provide any Chinese sauces. What I think is if they are offering Indo-chiense items they should provide Everything with that. I love this place it use to be where the old Taco Bell was in the 80's and now it moved east a few blocks down el Camino in Santa Clara !! Being of Sri Lankan origin I have always been on a quest for good appams in Bay Area and I must say I wasn't disappointed. Their appams are really huge and cooked well. They are also priced reasonably. I also ordered chicken curry and curry leaf based shrimp curry. The shrimp curry was on the spicier side but both tasted really good. Both the curries were served in really small bowls although the quantity was good enough, it would be nice if they can serve it in a larger bowl. We ordered chicken 65, chicken chettinad and chicken kheema aapam. The aapam was suggested by the waiter. The chicken 65 served here is just battered deep fried chicken. The next step would have been to cook it with yoghurt, garlic, chillies and curry leaves. But every chef interprets chicken 65 differently and as long as it tastes good the exact procedure followed doesn't matter. This dish would have been good but the pieces of chicken were very small and there were a lot of small fried pieces of batter w/o any chicken. Because of the inconsistency in the size of the pieces, some got overcooked. Over-all it was a very average dish. The chicken kheema aapam was the best dish we had. The gravy served with it was good. Chicken Chettinad had copious amounts of pepper. I am capable of tolerating a lot of heat but this dish had so much pepper that a few mouthfuls were enough to set my stomach on fire. Not good at all! Not sure if it is at odd time that I ordered and the chef was on break or what. The food was below standard in quality. The cauliflower Manchurian was sweet and was missing spring onions and regular onion ingredients. It had no flavor. The chicken biriyani was like variety rice (tamarind rice) with chicken piece in it. The chicken lollipop was way over spicy that it was hard to eat. Totally disappointed and surprised that a place that I visited multiple times a few month has gone down in standard. Recommendation If the problem was that it was off and the chef was out and if quality cannot be maintained through out the day (they are open from noon to 10pm) then please close at 3 and reopen at 6. I arrived here for a late lunch with my mother yesterday as a way to celebrate her birthday. We arrived around 2:30 ish and we're promptly seated. One thing I'll say is that the service here is not top notch, but I really did enjoy the food I had here. Once we were seated we had the following: Pepper chicken - this was a little spicy for me but the food here was great. I thought the curry was very flavorful and went really well with the appam we ordered Appam- my first time trying this, this really reminded me of dosa but was a nice change from the usual. This complimented the chicken curry very very well Falooda- had this for dessert and this was nicely layered with fruits, jelly, noodles, and these chia looking seeds thing. Food is tasty BUT... When a customer says they need their food to be dairy free the restaurant should really make sure it's dairy free! I've been to this restaurant twice now. The first time was a great experience and the meal was well enjoyed. The second time was pleasant but the food definitely had ghee. I always go with what the employees recommend since they know the menu. I'm so sad that I can't rely on this restaurant to listen to my dietary restrictions and therefor I can no longer go back for more food. I really wanted to like this place. The last time that I had hoppers was at the renowned restaurant, Hoppers, when I was in London at this time in 2018 (I was there for the Royal Wedding on 5/19/2018 although I wasn't invited, so I checked out the wedding venue in Windsor on the next day 5/20/2018). I got the egg hoppers with vegetable curry here. Hoppers are a bowl-shaped crisp pancake made of fermented rice flour batter and coconut milk. Unfortunately, the hoppers here were thick and soggy (like Ethiopian injera bread). I prefer a really thin and crispy crepe-like texture. The vegetarian curry was so spicy that I couldn't eat it at all. Not even one tiny bit. Totally unpalatable! I threw the whole thing away after two or three bites. What a waste of 15 bucks! I wasn't going to continue eating something that didn't make me happy though. My recommendation to the owner: elevate this place! Look at the pictures online of the hoppers at the Hoppers in London. Make the pancake thinner and crispier like a crepe. Elevate the hopper texture and elevate the curry. Make it more about the fresh vegetables and subtle flavors...and far less about the heat. Offer a really gourmet vegetarian tasting menu with tiny portion sizes but lots and lots of novelty and variety - half a dozen tiny hoppers with different vegetarian toppings and different vegetarian accompaniments. Look at the Hoppers menu in London. It's so good! I'll give them two stars instead of one because they really specialize in just one thing and that's hoppers (which is cool)!. read more

Had the food here yesterday and the food was VERY AVERAGE. I used to order food at the other aapakadai branch in Sunnyvale and thought the standard would be similar but failed my expectations. More than the quality of the food , am not going there again mainly because of the bad customer service . We had to prompt someone to take orders after waiting for sometime . Once we were done , we couldn't find anyone , so we went to the front desk to pay for the food as we wanted to head out soon. There was a nasty comment from a guy to his fellow colleague in Tamil "hey, go to the front desk, there is a family leaving and they may end up escaping/not paying and would leave, rush" . I was right there when he left that comment.. Really ? There were hardly 3 customers in the restaurant and this customer service is a recipe for disaster !! Good luck dude!! That's all I can say. A 3.5 star review. I've came here on a few occasions at the insistence of my coworkers. The seating area isn't too big and is always cold (in winter). The service is relatively quick. I usually go with a curry combo. However their lamb is so far the best item I've tried on their menu. Their taste is different from all other desi places I've tried which is nice for a change. If you like spicy South Indian food, then this is the place to be. We have been here many times and enjoy their spicy fare. My favorites are their parottas and aapams with their chettinad style kurma. They also have a veg kurma which is good, but given their chettinad heritage and flavors, I like the chettinad kurma much better. I also love their Idli sambar which tastes more unique due to their spicy flavor. Friends have told me their meat dishes are very good too. I once tried their veg thali, which was pretty good too. We went here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon and this place did justice to the craving we had for eating appam. We ordered the chilly chicken starter - right crisp and spice made this starter super enjoyable. For main course we ordered appam with chettinad chicken and buttermilk. The chettinad gravy was delicious and the chicken was well cooked. Appam had the right kind of puffiness in the center and crispy at its edges. We also orderd a chappati to finish the amazing gravy. About the food - We ordered veggie kothu paratha, veggies noodles, appams and some fish curry. Beware their food is spicy. As they serve chettinad food which is suppose to be spicy. Veggie noodles were tasty and I wish they could have added more vegetables. All the stars for appams which was the star dish by itself for lunch. I could have eaten just as is and it was going well with curry as well. There is a strong spices smell when you enter this place so be ready. I was impressed with their kotthu paratha which my hubs likes. It was spicy but went well with raita they serve along with this. I have tried kotthu paratha in lot of other restaurants around but this one tops the chart. I will go back for the kotthu paratha and appams and may be try something new. This isn't your typical Indian restaurant in that they don't have Naan and some other typical Indian foods. However they are famous for what they are named after, aapam. On this particular day me and my girlfriend were really craving aapam and curry. We both got the aapam with chicken curry. The curry was a good amount of spice, which you can increase or reduce if you ask. The chicken was tender and fell of the bone, it was so good. And the aapam itself was very fluffy and soft in the center, while very light and crunchy on the outside. A must try! As an appetizer we order the chicken lollipop. For me some of the pieces were a bit dry while otherwise were not. However the flavor and spices used make the chicken have a really authentic, bold flavor. Be sure to order this :D Finally me and my gf both got drinks. Since we went on Saturday they had a special drink available only on the weekends, badam milk, which is almond milk with saffron. You can get it hot or cold, hot is definitely more recommended. According to my gf it tasted like really good cereal yummy! I ordered the masala tea which was very good, the masala flavor definitely is strong with a little sugar added.
