Soondae guk (blood sausage stew) isn't too commonly found despite the recent trending of Korean cuisine so get yours if it's anywhere nearby! Though it seems a bit bland compared to the one I had in LA it tastes better if you make sure you stir in all the spices and abbaee sausage pieces (the one that's more meaty - they give you one in the stew but it could easily fall apart) that may have settled to the bottom. If it will be your first time having soondae guk then this is really great because flavors aren't too powerful. But also a heads up for first timers, there are pork intestines and cartilagey pieces in the stew! They are good if you like them but if you don't you can ask to have yours "without the gondaegi). Also my mom really likes the side dish there that's called shik-kae (like the sweet rice punch...or the Korean rapper Sik-K haha) because she says it's a North Korean dish that not many people know about nor a dish even served frequently at restaurants. It's made up of fish and radish pieces I think that's been pickled in kimchi-like spices. It's the side dish with the little sphere thingamabobs in it (my mom says it's a type of rice). The owner seems pretty reserved which made it awkward for even my Korean-speaking parents to ask for side dish refills...but if you're the type that do not want to be bothered anyways then you're ok! read more

I always follow the same route when going to my mom's house, but I never noticed this place before. Wow, Abbaee Soondae?! This is not your usual dark brown soondae, it is white and the filling looks more like a mandoo (dumpling). I'm a newbie to soondae, but now have turned into a soondae snob. I won't eat it if it's not fresh and the only place I like it is from 8th Ave Soondae in Koreatown. For those of you not familiar with soondae it is pig intestines stuffed with chopped vegetables, clear noodles, and pig blood. Yummm (^_^) I came here with a friend and we ordered the Soondae Jungshik ($11.99) and small order of Jok Bal ($19.99). Their Jok Bal (pig's feet) is fresh and has good texture - a chewy consistency. The Soondae Jungshik comes with a bowl of soondae soup and a side plate of extra soondae, liver, and pig ears. The soup is intentionally bland so you can season it to your taste with some salt, pepper, perilla seeds, and salted shrimp. It also looked like they use pho noodles in the soup. The broth isn't as flavorful as 8th Ave Soondae and their soondae is mainly filled with noodles, but for North OC this is about the best soondae that I've tried. The restaurant's name is actually pronounced "ah bah ee" but they spell it differently in english. The place still has that new feeling because it looked like the owner/manager was doing double duty as our server, plus he was super cordial. I will definitely be back soon, after all... it's MUCH closer than driving all the way to LA. read more

was craving bossam (steamed pork belly) after test driving cars in the area, and yelped this place. this restaurant is known for its blood sausage (soondae). they have at least two main varieties of soondae, one with more veggies cooked into the sausage, and the other the more traditional kind with vermicelli noodles. i liked the fact that they had a smaller portion of bossam, which usually costs around $25-30 at other korean restaurants in ktown or in the BP/la habra area. the bossam jung sik (the plate which comes with rice, soup, banchan, and wraps) was only about $15. ended up ordering the soondae as well for about $10. they packaged the order well to go. an added plus was this was a mom and pop/husband and wife run operation who were pretty friendly and were watching the dodgers/hyun jin ryu game on the television. recommended if you're looking for korean comfort food in the area with a home-y feel. read more

I called to tell them they messed up our order, they did not apologize and the owner started blaming my husband (who picked up the order) saying that he didn't say anything when picking up the order. It's so flavorful and it's a great comfort food. I always like how the owner is really nice to us even though we come in groups. My absolute FAVE spot for soondae. Even though there are multiple places near me to get this dish, I've been coming out here EVERY TIME for my soondae fix. During the past few years of my regular visiting, I haven't had a single disappointing experience. Their assorted soondae and soup have always been fresh and hit the spot! Their special Abbaee soondae (both reg and jumbo sizes) are super savory and flavorful. And their normal chapsal soondae is just SOLID. If you can handle some heat, the spicy fire soondae is worth a try - so unique and tasty! The owners here are reserved but always polite and so sweet! I really hope this mom and pop spot stays for a looonggg time. I'll definitely continue to make the drive out here for my soondae cravings for as long as I can :) read more

Its the first time I've had soondae. I got the soondaetang. Which was pretty plain but if you add some salt to it it'll be fine. Just as a side note make sure to take the noodles out of the broth otherwise they will get soggy. The side dishes are pretty good. Overall I enjoyed it and the meal was pretty filling. When I have korean food i feel full and satisfied. It doesn't blow me away. read more

It is by far the worst soondae restaurant. Paid $15 for the soondae soup which has no taste at all. It was basically water, salt, red pepper flakes, and small amount of vegetables with soondae. It wasn't any kind of broth which you would expect from other soondae soup. Also paid $34 for soondae plate which was microwaved for about 2-3 minutes before serving. Definitely go if you're not a native speaker. The menu is printed in both Korean and English. Food is great! We ordered the Jung Shik, which is soondae soup with a combo plate of various soondae and meats. The soup was a little on the bland side. There are a variety of spices you can add, ground sesame, sea salt, green onions, red pepper paste, etc. I'd recommend to add all in healthy portions. The soondae itself is delicious, especially the abbaee wang (their specialty). The pictures on the menu aren't very appetizing, especially when you compare it to the original soondae. It's packed with japchae noodles, chap-ssal, and a mix of veggies and meat. The best part was its texture. Normal soondae has a chew to it, sort of like al dente noodles, but the wang soondae was hot and flaky, like a bowl of rice. I think our total came out to be around $20 pre-tip. We ordered Soondae tang and Jokbal to share. Their side dishes were very simple.. like 4 things? but it was all yummmaaayy :) kimchi and ggakddoogi(?) (cubed radish kimchi) were really good. but my favorite was the seaweed in ponzu sauce. Yea.. it sounds gross but oh man. it was BOMB. trust me. They also give you a little plate of regular soondae as an appetizer. Soondae tang: They dont have soondae in the tang. They have other "stuff" such as intestines and things I've never seen before. but hey. it tasted sooo good. Jokbal: OMY.. you need to get one lettuce, place one piece of jokbal, and dip one garlic in the bean paste and place that also on top and take a bite. HEAVEN :) jokbal is suppose to be served cold so.. you can ask them to heat it if you want. Everything was good except for service. There's not really a server working the floor. Just a married couple and one mexican dude in the kitchen. That's it.. Idk how they can handle everything if the place gets crowded. oh and there's no bell. you have to literally scream out "JUH GI YO" to get their attention. I consider Seoul Soondae the best soondae this side of the world. But my move into Buena Park put it at a distance too unpractical for my regular visits. So I decided to try out Abbaee Wang which is a mere 30 second drive from my new place. Although I'm hesitant to compare the two places and wish to give Abbaee its own fair objective review, its just not possible. The two dishes I ordered were the Pork Bosam and the Soondae Variety dish. The Soondae Variety dish came with 3 different types of soondae. The traditional black soondae, a white soondae, and spicy white soondae. Let me start off by saying these people pile on the soondae!! I have enough soondae to last me 3-4 days. I ordered my food to go, and was watching the proprietors prepare my food, the woman kept fishing for more soondae and more soondae until the to-go box was about 3-4 pounds!! I couldn't believe it. As for the black soondae, its not bad, but it isn't as good as Seoul Soondae either - a strong 8 out of 10. I didn't care for the white soondae due to its mushy texture, the flavor was a tad bland but edible 5.5 out of 10. The spicy white soondae was better, a good 7 out of 10. The Pork Bosam was awesome! The best Pork Bosam I've had, and I've tried almost everyplace that offers it. It blows Seoul Soondae away in Pork Bosam. The pork was juicy without all the greasiness, flavor was spot on and the texture was perfect. The marinated radish it comes with was delicious. Every other place I've tried either had bad pork and good radish or vice versa. The radish and pork are meant be eaten together wrapped in either cabbage or lettuce leaves. Both elements at Abbaee were great and I enjoyed it immensely. The best Pork Bosam, other than the fact that its a bit pricey. The proprietors are very nice and friendly, the restaurant itself is a small cozy, mom & pops type. It reminded me of the small hole in the wall places in Korea, except much cleaner. All in all, I really like this place and will be a regular (I'm telling you the Pork is awesome!). read more

This place is in the middle of an unassuming corner with a liquor store...I must have passed it a million times without realizing it was there. So a raining Saturday night we wanted some comfort food and did a quick Yelp search. The area is not short on well reviewed korean restaurants. But the pictures of the soondae and jokbal totall sold us! Got to the restaurant...its super small with just one row of booths. Luckily one of them was just clearing up. The first thing you notice is the fact everyone in the restaurant spoke korean! Then you realize the restaurant was run by just three people! Front of the house, cook, and bus boy! Crazy... This lead to some slowness in getting our orders in ...but all was forgiven when the food came out. We ordered two items, chapssal soondae and the jokbal bossam. chapssal soondae: ....crazy assortment of 3 sausages, intestines, and liver....the sweet rice one (black) was our favorite. There was something amazing about the texture of the glass noodles in a sausage. The other ones were solid...though it might be interesting to get it in a stew next time. The intestines were good as well...but I could easily pass on the liver. A little dry and very spongy. jokbal bossam: we got funny looks for ordering this...I guess its usually meant for more than two. But that didn't stop us from chowing down. The meat was salted to perfection! ...I was in heaven. The best part was it was skin on...and so texturally perfect. The fat was barely noticeable and when paired with the kimchi totally refreshing. This also came with brined napa, lettuce, firm tofu, and some raw oysters. Combined with the seasonings and bean paste...a perfect fusion of flavors! I passed by this place several times when getting off the 5 freeway, going toward Beach Blvd. I was driving with my dad, and he suggested we check this place out. So, we finally checked it out. The place has been around for a while, but it's not always easy to spot. This is a specialty place, and caters particularly to people who like soondae, which is a particular blood sausage dish from Korea. Needless to add, it's not for everyone, and people who like it like it quite a bit--mostly people who are into old-school flavors. I'm personally not a big fan of soondae (and I can't have huge amounts of it), but I have tasted good ones (they are the soft ones, not the ones they have in stores). Soondae here is pretty good and the texture is soft. My dad and I ordered the Soondae tong, which is a soondae soup/stew. After adding some salty, pickled shrimp, the flavors came out. It tasted like hae-jang guk, with some tripe and noodles inside. This a small restaurant on a corner of Auto Center Drive and Stanton. There's good amount of parking. Inside, there are about 5 or 6 booths, which isn't very big. They had Tiffany lamps, which I found interesting (perhaps it used to be a sandwich shop). Overall, if you like soondae, you will probably enjoy this place. The name "Abbaee" apparently means "father" more commonly used in North Korean dialect. For me personally, it's what I would call an "Occasion" restaurant. Yes, it's a place I would go "occasionally." read more
