Since we were going to do an Über fancy brunch (and because Scopa didn't answer their phone after 2 tries), we decided to try Agave for a chill, belated-birthday dinner for my hubby. The Mexican food wasn't awesome, but it was pretty good. I liked the chips, guac, and salsa. The service was also really nice! They accidentally took our guac before we were finished with it so they gave us some more. My hubby got to try something he's never had before: the Molcajet. It had shrimp, steak, and chicken in a red sauce and was served in a mortar. It was huge! He liked it a lot. I had the burrito with carne asada and it was only okay. The steak was a bit dry and the burrito as a whole was fairly bland. My MIL ordered the veggie enchiladas and seemed to enjoy the diff veggies it was filled with (zucchini, cauliflower etc). They seem to carry a lot of tequilas. They had my favorite - Frida Khalo silver. Overall, if you're looking for some good ol' Mexican to sop up all that wine-tasting, Agave is a good choice. read more

Food is good, people are polite, but the service is horrendous in terms time of delivery for food. A very simple plate can take upwards of 30 to 40 minutes to arrive. Which usually has me scrambling to finish it and make it back to work in time. If you are not rushed for time, this is a great spot to sit back and enjoy some great food. read more

So delicious and accommodating - if it's not on the menu... ASK - they will probably make it for you! Agave being in a strip mall is deceiving, especially in an upscale foodie town of Healdsburg (the Palm Springs of the North!) - don't let it's strip mall location deter you The staff is SO SWEET and SO FRIENDLY, and the food is DEEEEELICIOUS (right down to the beans - ohmygosh seriously good beans!)! Staff is quick to take a drink order (always a plus in my book) and we were never without chips and salsa as we waited for our meal. Spot on attention to our group. We've been twice, and have dined inside and out on the patio - both wonderful options! Over the years I've become such a Mexican restaurant snob - East Bay to North Bay, and this is hands down our family's favorite Mexican restaurant. We chose this place due to the great reviews and tasty food and drinks that it was known for. We came in just now in the morning of Mother's Day with a party of 8 people with our moms. We ordered coffee that was never ready until after the food was served. Prior to that, the rice and beans for all of the food came out cold, the chorizo for the eggs and chorizo were burnt, and they forgot to bring the flour tortillas that came with one of the meals. Most importantly, it seemed as we were an after thought. The server never came back to ask us how our food was or if there was anything missing. It was a hassle to try to get her attention unfortunately. I don't like to leave negative reviews, but this was extra bad, especially with the fact that there was a 20% mandatory gratuity for parties greater than 6 (which is normal). This is fine, but it seems that the server did not attempt to bring effort since there was guaranteed gratuity. Finally, I asked for the manager or owner to discuss this. They mentioned there was no manager or owner there, and they gave a very insincere sounding apology due to having staff that no showed today. All in all, it left a poor Mother's Day experience. read more

We ate here for a birthday celebration. Thought we'd try a new place on the recommendation of others. The service was good; friendly and attentive waitstaff. The chips were good; light & crispy corn tortilla chips. Ordered guacamole. It was good as well but needed salt. I can't remember which margarita we got. It had orange in it, was really smooth and I really enjoyed it. One person ordered a margarita that was supposed to have a smoky flavor. It was awful! It tasted like gasoline smells. When he sent it back & ordered the same as what the rest of us had, they took the bad tasting one away but still charged him $11.00! This was disappointing because most establishments will not charge a patron for something they really don't want. Finally, the food was not very good. We had to wait over an hour for our orders. The presentation was lackluster. Four of us ordered burritos and when the food arrived it had been essentially plopped on a plate and served. You eat first with your eyes. The burritos weren't served with any sour cream or guacamole or garnish. I asked for sour cream & guacamole because my burrito was dry. I was charged an extra $5 for what amounted to a couple of tablespoons of each. I don't mind paying extra but I also don't like feeling as though I was "nickel & dimed" for items that should have been included with the meal. Needless to say, although the margaritas were tasty, we will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

I had a better experience with service this time. I had only one server, and she was constant checking on my needs, she was very polite and knowledgeable. Food: very testy, and fresh. I had the carnitas plate delicious, not greasy just right. The only down side was the I wore charge for extra tortillas and tomatillo salsa a dollar for each. In my particular case I feel it shouldn't be a charge for my dish, since it require more tortillas to finish it and more salsa because, carnitas are somehow a dry dish. My rating isn't for the food.... as I never got to eat there. I'm giving them 1 star for their reservation "process" I made a dinner reservation for 8 on their own website and when we arrived they said basically that the reservation doesn't allocate tables and that other people with reservations ahead of us were waiting. That's not a reservation but a list ... like you came in and out your name in! Just don't offer reservations then. We had a 5 yo with us and if anyone knows how kids get after a certain time you know they aren't going to wait 45 mins to an hour after you get there.. hence why I picked a place that allowed for a reservation. We ended up splitting our group and going to 2 other restaurants so the 5 yo could eat in a timely manner. read more

I dropped my credit card outside mombos pizza today during my lunch at 12:00pm. I came back after work after I realized I dropped it. A very helpful mombos employee told me a lady turned it into agave because it was a Spanish name on the card. Me and the mombos employee entered agave. We told the front lady the situation, and she seemed very annoyed about even having to deal with this on a slow Wednesday . At first she said it wasn't there because she doesn't see it. The mombos employee told her to check the register. It was there. It has my fathers name on the card because we share a credit card as we are in the same construction company. She asks for my ID , I give it to her. At this point I'm frustrated. I have to drive an hour to Sonoma to see my sick girlfriend and I just got off an 8 hour work day. AND this lady is refusing to give me my ID and Credit card back. She said I was rude and that if i didn't leave she'd call the cops. I stepped outside and had my father call. I didn't want things to escalate. She eventually answers the phone after a few tries to agaves main phone number. After 20 minutes I got my card and Id back, finally able to leave. I seriously DO NOT RECOMMEND AGAVE, imagine being threatened with police because you accidentally dropped your credit card. Insane. read more

The chips are delicious. NOTE - I ordered this during the Corvid-19 outbreak, so I am giving them a break on the positive side. I ordered the Taco Salad. They ought to specify it is a flour tortilla salad bowl, I prefer the corn, but no matter. The insides are what counts. I ordered the steak, unfortunately it was mixed with the beans at the very bottom, steak was cold and I never did get a nice steak bite until the end. Salad was a bit on the tasteless side, too americanized?? I would try again, maybe after this crisis blows over. Astonishing. Service from a family who are proud of their work and food makes for the foundation. The food itself is awesome. We started with Molotes, a fried corn dumpling stuffed with potato and chicken sitting on a bed of black beans covered in cabbage, green sauce, cotija..... yum. Then, Mole Negro de Oaxaca, the house special. Chocolate, shiles, herbs and spices in a thick sweet mole covering chicken. Scrumptious. We also had a platter with an enchilada and a taco. The enchilada was delivered in a bright spicy tomato sauce that served to highlight the delicious chicken filling. You could be forgiven for thinking that this is one more strip mall Mexican joint. Had a business lunch here, and was really surprised. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, and so my expectations were limited. It was a beautiful day, so we sat outside. We were waited on promptly, and our drink order was taken. The menu has the normal fare for a Mexican restaurant. I ordered the carnitas plate, and it was delicious. Perfectly crispy pork (and a generous portion), corn tortillas, rice, and beans. Basic offering, but everything tasted very fresh. Prices were a little high, but it's Healdsburg. Was visiting Healdsburg and decided to check this place out. I don't really expect anything amazing to come out of a strip mall but this place proved me wrong. The food was so good we came back the next day as well. They have most of the traditional offerings on the menu. We weren't starving so we decided to share a dish. We had the Las Poblanos with grilled peppers, onions, mushrooms, chicken, and prawns. It came with black beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and corn and flour tortillas. Wow!! So freakin delicious and so much food for such value. I don't see mushrooms used too much in Mexican cuisine and this place used portabellas that were thinly sliced. We loved that! They also use huge prawns in the dish and they're very generous with the portions. It was so perfect for 2 people to share! The next day we came back and shared the Chilaquiles. We also ordered the Las Poblanos again. It was that good! The Chilaquiles was great too. We got it with Tasajo which is a thinly grilled steak. It came with black beans, queso fresco, eggs that we ordered over easy, and a green sauce that I think was chile verde. The sauce was excellent. It was zesty without being over the top and too acidic. It was well balanced. Another highlight at this restaurant was the wonderful service. Marlen and Guadalupe took such great care of us. They were both so helpful, sweet, and attentive. Thank you both so much for such a memorable experience!! We're only sad that you don't have a location in San Francisco. I considered my self a regular customer for this business, up until today. I've order the same super shrimp burrito multiple times, extra shrimp, black beans and "lite on the rice". I got it today for my lunch break, and they somehow messed up my order. When I got back I called in and explained the issue, they said they would call me and I received a call where they stated to come in the next day to get a "regular" burrito but since they got the shrimp correct on my first order they unfortunately wouldn't be able to give me any shrimp on my new burrito. I definitely didn't want a free burrito but I didn't expect such solution, totally pathetic. read more

Admit it: you came to Healdsburg looking to flex your well-gentrified, eco-friendly, liberal-elitist muscles. You've had your fill of zinfandels and quinoa, but you're still about to break the bank at Dry Creek Kitchen because, you know, there's a random chance in hell that they're offering a new preparation of kale that you haven't tried before and it pairs perfectly with Carménère. Humboldt Fog, anyone? Make your way to the strip mall on the other side of the tracks. No, no, skirt past the Carl's Jr. and go all the way back to Agave, where you can find reasonably authentic Oaxacan food which will satisfy your soul more than any meal at Barndiva. What to order: - The house specialty is the mole, and you can find it one of three ways: over bone-in chicken, over tender pork, or over pulled chicken enchiladas ("enmoladas"). Skip the pork: it's delicious, but the flavor will overwhelm the mole... and the whole point is the mole. - The tasajo is heaven. I woke up the next day wanting another plate of it. (You could easily feed two people with a single order). It loosely approximates fajitas, but that really doesn't do it justice. Just get it. Don't think twice. - The guacamole... is a big disappointment. Under-ripe avocados, prepared in advance and then stuck in a refrigerator. It's a bit embarrassing given how good the rest of the food is. - Rice and beans could be a lot better, but they're passable. So too the tortillas. - The drinks are well done. You'd think it might be a disaster, but they make a good margarita, plain and simple. Seriously, do yourself a favor and head to Agave! read more

I loved the mole here, not too chocolate-y or too orange-y as I have had other places but a wonderful balance of flavors. I had the enchilada mole special and while I don't usually like enchiladas, these were tasty and provided lots of fillings to mop up the mole. I almost licked the plate it was so good. Service was excellent, with chip and salsa refills and frequent check-ins by the server and other staff but not hovering. I liked how all of the staff were available for requests, none of that "this isn't my table" or "let me find your server". We also enjoyed the agua fresca, they had mango and papaya along with the usual horchata. My only criticism is of the chairs, they are not very comfortable and could use more cushioning on the seats. They can charge for water since we are in a serious drought right now but they have to warn their customers about it. Also, my friend ordered NOT SPICY burrito. Guess what happened? Cute restaurant! Nice presentation of tasty Mexican dishes. The carnitas are wonderful on soft tacos. One serious criticism: when a restaurant lists the marguarita ingredients and marguarita mix or sweet and sour is added to the drink, it should be listed. Only saying frsh lime juice is not O.K. This restaurant needs to be honest in the drink descriptions. The service could be improved. Everyone at the table should be served at the same time. One person at our table ate most of his dinner before the rest were served. read more

We were definitely disappointed by Agave after reading all the four and five-star reviews. The complementary chips and salsa were solid but nothing special, the drinks ranged from sub-par (blended house margarita) to good (house margarita on the rocks), and the food was just OK. The chicken mole was perhaps a little better than the carnitas-taco combination plate, but the plump and tasty rice was the only thing that approached four-star quality. The service was friendly, but our waitress forgot about us at the end of the meal, when we were ready for the check. She finally reappeared after 10+ minutes. I considered dropping the rating to two-stars because of the service glitch, but I'm rounding up to be nice. With all the other dining choices in Healdsburg, I doubt we'll be back. read more

I have been coming here since the beginning and finally realized that my love hate relationship with this place revolves around weather or not I dine in or order take out. I have been let down by my take out burritos for the last several times (though I continue to order them, Ha!) so when I went on a date night with my little guy, I decided to order something completely new: the Molcajete. #LOVE. This dish is served in a concrete bowl with the sauce, shrimp, chicken, cactus, beef, onions and as the chef/owner says, "Love" sizzles! It is so delicious. I go crazy for this stuff, it's like something I think about every Thursday (for some reason that's the day i crave my Mexican food).
