Have been coming to this restaurant for years. I usually order the regular combination lunch or the akagi California lunch (which I got in the picture). Each of their bento boxes also come with miso soup and salad. I have tried different meat options but my favorite will always be the short ribs. Their portion here is huge. I'm giving this place 3 stars because the food is on the salty side, but it's not terrible. In my opinion, since I cook Japanese food at home most of the time, the food is above average. I suggest to order the bento boxes here since they have a good deal. I recently tried the tempura and ribs and it was actually not bad, the miso soup was salty for my liking though. This place is ideal for a quick filling meal, definitely a must try. read more

Older generation folks who has been dining here for centuries would appreciate this Japanese restaurant. Not so much the newer generation or those that are accustomed to dining at nicer Japanese restaurants. Snobs. We're all food snobs. Sorry! This place gets extremely packed because of the retro Japanese cooking style. When we walked in, about 90% of the patrons were eating Bento Boxes, mostly chicken or beef or salmon teriyaki. I guess that's what they are known for which causes a long wait for their food. I tasted the bento box and its just meh for me. I ordered the special menu, Chirashi bowl. Although the fish seemed fresh and tasty, the rice was a crumbling mess. I'm not sure if its the way they cooked it or if they used the right rice but it was definitely not the right stickiness. And it was missing a hint of sweetness from the rice vinegar that I've grown accustomed to. We ordered a few other rolls which didn't really impress me much either. But they did have a delightful unagi (less the rice). Call me a snob but I wouldn't come here on my terms. If invited, then I wouldn't quarrel over it due to respect to old peoples taste. I really do not like to give places a low rating, but sometimes it is unavoidable. The good news is there is ample parking. We ordered pretty basic food such as tekka roll and a spicy tuna roll. On the plus side, the miso soup broth was very tasty. Unfortunately, I was surprised that it didn't have any tofu. Not one tiny little spec. On the rolls, the ratio of rice to fish was off. Way too much rice. I am suspecting they are trying to cut costs here because even the chop sticks seemed well below the normal standards. Now for the kicker...the spicy tuna roll was no more than a tekka roll with what appeared to be tapitio dumped on top! That is not a spicy tuna roll and those two flavors DO NOT belong together. It was actually inedible. My husband can eat just about anything but this, he could not eat. And the nail in the coffin was the waitress really appeared not to want to be there. No smile and not friendly. All we could really do was chuckle about the whole experience. Needless to say, we will not be coming back. read more

I did take out here and was pleasantly surprised. This place is not super big, seems like the definition of hole in the wall. It's on this weird side street right off El Camino Real. I got the curry special and was surprised to see it had two meats: chicken katsu and beef! Most curry places only give you one type. The curry sauce was thick and flavorful and had lots of carrots. Chicken was lightly fried. Beef wasn't super dry, and shredded easily. I thought this was a pretty decent deal for around $12. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for years now and I have always loved how much you get for the price. However recently I have been noticing a big error in their quality control for some of their dishes. I love their bento box combos a lot, but recently I have been tasting soap from their bento boxes. Especially in the rice, I can taste hints of dish soap. This has been happening recently every time I eat in. Whenever I order take out, I do not taste soap in their rice so I can only assume they are forgetting to rinse or dry the bento boxes after cleaning them. This is a minor mistake that can easily be fixed, but for now I am giving Akagi 3 stars because I notice this issue every time I eat in. read more

A friend recommended this establishment so we came to try the sushi and the Combination Dinner. Upon walking in, the restaurant was about half full with no line. One of the servers was inattentive and was too busy chatting away with one table. We were never seated or even acknowledged despite clearly waiting at the front. The overall vibe was uninviting. This is a great spot for a cheap dinner. This place is so cute. Small authentic Japanese restaurant run by really sweet folks. Prices are so good. They have daily bento specials with 6 or so items for about $15. Can't really top that these days. I will say, I'm more accustomed to a sweeter teriyaki sauce and their's is more salty. Their deluxe sashimi seemed super fresh and worth it. I'll be trying that next time! read more

Peninsula restaurants are not in my wheelhouse so I was relieved when my friend already had a restaurant picked out for dinner. It surprised him that I'd never heard of this sushi spot, but judging by the lived-in looks of it & smooth-sailing service, Akagi has been a neighborhood favorite for a while now. I'm a boring, predictable diner, especially when Japanese food is concerned; you'll get no pointers on their raw fish from me. I will say it's obvious they've got their cooking routine down pat, a comment meant to be both positive & a critique. Their bento box of mixed tempura & tofu is solid, as is their shrimp tempura roll, they've churned out these exact items a million times before. Perhaps their complacency allows them to overlook details such as overcooked batter. I won't suggest Akagi when it's my turn to choose the restaurant, but I wouldn't be opposed if someone else wants to go; pricing is great, & it seems they'd be consistently a-ok. read more

I've been going to this place since the late 1990s. They have great prices for their bento combination plates and my dad loves their broiled mackerel. They were out of tuna because they are having a hard time getting their supply chain in order due to the pandemic, no problem, I ordered some sushi for the first time. What a mistake! I have never had such bad sushi! The women who was at the counter I think put Tabasco on top of it. She is no sushi chef. And to make things worse, the server who has been there for at least 20 years wore his mask under his nose! So basically he doesn't wear a mask! So everyone he comes in contact with he could be potentially infecting. I have it a 3 star because I've liked this place for so long but I will never go there again. Actually do like their food, this review is again for their phone service. First, the person that picks up acts like he can't hear, then immediately puts me on hold for about 5 minutes. After that he returns and says "hello" like he can't hear again twice and just hangs up. I called back saying he just hung up on me, he says "sorry I know we are very busy". I could hear the business going on in the background and I know from going to the restaurant that they usually are busy. But I also know from the way they use to-go boxes for all foods that they are geared towards the pandamic. This is actually not the first time I had this problem and because of this their line is constantly busy. Really frustrating for a restaurant to open at 11:30 to 2:00 for lunch and the entire time can't even get an order through phone, who really has 30 minutes to wait at a restaurant for a pick-up order? I hope their lady owner sees this, and hope that they really are too busy and that this is a way for them to deny business they can't handle. read more

I grew up coming to Akagi because it's an inexpensive Japanese spot compared to the ones in SF that will keep your wallet and stomach happy. I always get the Akagi Cali bento because you get mixed tempura with 4 pieces of shrimp (yes you heard that number right!) + veggies, 3 pieces of California roll and 1 item of your choice. I do tuna sashimi, salmon teriyaki or chicken katsu depending on my mood. For $11.95, that's a no brainer for this type of bento box. I'll admit the quality is about a 3/5, but for those days when I'm not trying to pay $20 for a bento box, this will satisfy my craving. It was my first time trying the tuna sashimi because I was scared of ordering it, but with great risk comes great reward right? I'd give it a 3.75/5, it could use more freshness but it was decent. I much prefer salmon sashimi, but there's no substitutions here :/ The service is 4/5. The same servers have been working here for years and that's a good sign that Akagi treats them well and so they treat customers like me well. A family favorite. So much so that we have made friends with the sushi chef behind the counter. Traditional looking Japanese restaurant. If you walk all the way to the back there is a small bar you can sit at. Staff is friendly and informative. Bento boxes are a big hit here. They give you a TON of food and it's definitely a bang for your buck. Sashimi plate is also to die for. I've had a few of the sushi plates before and from what I remember they weren't my favorite. Will definitely have to try again, but my favorite is the bento -- the chicken teriyaki and tonkatsu are so yummy! read more
