Never liked the belt sushi, but these are such great size, value and freshness we can't pass them up. We've stopped going to the nicer looking places and this is our go to. We go in maybe every other week and would go more if it was realistic for us. The freshly ordered options are generous sizes and made right there. So yummy! Some places charge extra for the spicy sauce and they do not. I'm a soda snob and it's obvious that they keep their soda machine clean as you can actually taste the flavor of your soda and there is the perfect match of soda and syrup. The service is great and totally friendly. They remember us and make comments to prove it and I love that small town feel when you go in. The only time it takes them a little longer to get to you is when they are slammed with customers (which happens often). I can't recommend them more highly! read more

This is by far the cheapest sushi train I've been to while keeping fair quality most of the time. Your best bet us to order off the menu, their $3.50 poke bowl is a crazy good value! I took off one star only because we've had a couple of rude staff members, but the majority are very kind and prompt. Also the sushi quality can be subpar and sometimes they aren't super on top of removing the old ones from the belt, BUT I once let them know my fish smelled terrible and they gladly replaced it. For about $7/person on average, you can't do worse for sushi. So great to have a little place like this in the hood. read more

I have been here twice. REALLY good with a ton of choices. I love that they put a sign on the conveyor belt of what the sushi is that is coming behind it - I hate when you grab something off the conveyor and it wasn't what you thought OR wanted! The place is large and there are big booths to sit in, as well as counter space. They have some weird choices (Steak, bacon, asparagus...) but for those who don't care for fish, I guess this is an OK thing. I would totally recommend this place. Not only is there a wide variety of rolls, but they keep the nigiri stocked as well. I have never had a complaint regarding the freshness of the sushi. I also enjoy the cheerfulness of the owner. I visited them for the first time 6 months ago and I've been back a dozen times since. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly and the food is fabulous. They've been consistently wonderful every time. There's always a huge selection on the conveyor belt, plus other items you can order from the menu. Edamame, seaweed salad, fresh fruit, tempura, spring rolls, gyoza, nigiri, sashimi and a dazzling array of rolls... Who needs $20/plate sushi? If what you want is gone by the time it comes around to you, just ask for it. They'll whip it up and bring the first plate straight to you. The label cards on the conveyor make it easy to encourage new-to-sushi teens (and adults) to give it a try. Getting food to go is quick and easy too. My favorites: the house roll (!!!!), blackened tuna and edamame. Their special of the day is usually pretty amazing too. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with Akira. I arrived at 5pm. They appeared to have just started ramping up the amount of sushi on the conveyor belt. They had a nice variety of items on the belt. A lot of Kaiten sushi places I've been to in North America just put the absolute basics on the belt, and you have to order everything else. They had 90% of their items on the belt. For the most part, the food was reasonably fresh and tasty. The only exception was the eel nigiri. Both the fish and rice were chilled. The whole nigiri had obviously come out of the fridge. It was also very reasonably priced. My total for just me including tax was $27, and I ate a LOT of food. My only complaint is that it took forever to get the check. For some reason they seemed to just stop coming to my area. Finally I had to stand up and wave somebody down. Overall I definitely recommend Akira. read more

Plates range from $1 to $3 and there was a large variety and a long belt of options. Some interesting things: kalamari, watermelon, two spring rolls, steak roll (cooked beef inside?), chicken katsu roll. I had never been over to this strip mall but this place was worth checking out. Great prices, good taste. lucky to find this gem which opened in fall of 2015. plates were very well priced at $1-$3 each. some of the rolls were huge. very filling. this is not a high class sushi joint, if you are a foodie, don't expect too much. sure the fish is thinly slice compared to a higher class joint, but for a fraction of the cost, just grab another plate! rolls are bursting at the seem. the conveyor belt is well organized and everything is labeled. the belt makes 1 lap in 8 minutes and 50 seconds (yeah, I timed it...). they also have a to go station where to can fill your own box. we will definitely be back. read more

Trying this place for the first time. Staff was fine but surprised they forgot two of the most expensive rolls that I ordered when it wasn't busy at all. The sushi rice is too thick and taste was not good. I'd recommend double checking customer orders to make sure everything is in there especially if it's not too busy. Spent a good 45 minutes watching plates and plates of food float by and absolutely nothing impressed. Wasted most of the sashimi I picked up. Some of the food was cold like the calamari fries and spring rolls. The rolls were just bleh. Tried a piece of one roll ( crab and salmon) and gave up. At first the belt concept of theirs confused me; they don't put things on at random, they categorize it with a pictures description. Booths down the middle with row seating on the sides. Staff is awesome! Food quality is what you'd expect from a conveyer belt type sushi restaurant. I would say that it is a step up from the Sushiland in Clackamas. They have a far greater selection than any conveyer place I've been to here. We've also gotten the Udon which was good as well as the Chirashi Don Raw which was really good. You really can't beat the prices here. I'd say it's a lot better than what you pay for. Its 6:30 on a Tuesday evening and there was hardly anyone here. Edited 08/28:/16: I had to come back and add that fifth star. We got home today and our crockpot lunch was still raw. Enter Akira sushi. My husband an daughter ran up there really quick to grab some sushi to go and, oh my goodness, was it ever amazing! I swear it gets better and better each time we eat there. The rolls were so fresh that the tempura was still warm when we ate I'd and the fish was sliced to perfection. If I ate here half as much as I want to, I'd be the size of a house! It is so good!!!! We just went for our first time and we loved it! A LOT! The food tasted fresh and flavorful and there was an incredible variety on the belt. Our group of two adults and three (small) kids ate for less than $25!!!! I was surprised. My husband was full-on shocked that it cost so little. I love that there was fresh cantaloupe and watermelon (lightly chilled and perfectly sweet) and some non-fishy choices. Now, obviously, this isn't a high-class sushi joint, however, for the price, it can't be beat. It hurts me to say it, but, I think Akira may have just knocked my former go-to sushi place off of its pedestal (and Akira is only 10 minutes away for me instead of 20-30). I tried so many that I can't remember what the names of all of them are, but, my entire family loved the shrimp tempura roll, the gyoza, the spider roll, and several others. I love that the belt is organized and has signs before each group of plates to tell you the name of the roll and what's in it! That alone was a big deal for me (I don't like fish eggs or cream cheese in my sushi and the signs made it easy to avoid those two things). My husband (the non-sushi fan in the family) has already volunteered to go back with me another time because they have bacon, steak, and chicken rolls. My picky eater pigged out and even our 1-year-old left full of rice, sweet potatoes, melon, and avocado. I fully intend to take advantage of the to-go very soon. Very impressed! My husband and I love sushi and look for quality places in our travels. We recently tried Fujiyama in Portland near Woodstock. And while it was more modern looking I would come back to Akira over them given the choice. Don't get me wrong. Fujiyama has excellent sushi but I was disappointed by the lack of variety compared to Akira and the plates at Fuji were not labeled. So I has to make a guess as to what I was grabbing. Both places are conveyor style, which was new for me. But I like Akira better because everything is clearly labeled and the selection includes items like spring rolls, seaweed salad, gyoza, chicken teriyaki, fresh fruit, and more. If they appear to be out of something on the conveyor belt, just ask and they will make you some. The decor is simple but the place was immaculate. read more

Definitely worth the price, one of my favorites now in Portland. Sushi was done well, and the servings were generous. I appreciate how the rice isn't too sour like most places. If I lived closer I would go there at least three times a week. However the ikura was strangely warm. Everything was great except the owner (I think) made people uncomfortable. My mother and I, who are from the same culture as the staff at this restaurant, have seen this behavior with many asian men in charge of businesses, so we understand. They think they are being hospitable and providing good service to the customers, but when he's around too much, asking questions, and looking over everyone's shoulders, it's uncomfortable.
