Visited Al Fin today for the first time. Decor and ambiance are on the rough side but not the food; it was very, very good. Not 5 star (we take that rating seriously) but well worth the money. Well seasoned, good portions (we couldn't finish it all), FRESHLY made and appropriate home made condiments, e.g., slaw for papusas, relish, chimichurri, etc. Steak was well flavored and tender (for a flap steak), yuca light, crispy and not at all oily, beans were spiced (which you almost never get), and decent service. This place is a diamond in the rough. A true gem to be found. I went to Al Fin on a friends recommendation that the pupusas are fantastic and believe me they were. We started our dinner with an order of fried plaintain that were delicious. I had the pupusas and steak combo plate and I was not disappointed. My wife had the two pupusas plate and our daughter had a rice burrito. We shared from each others plate and the food is very very good. The Horchata is excellent, best I ever had. I don't recall rating a restaurant with five stars and this place has earned it. Al Fin is located on the corner of Mission and Market in Daly City. Dropped in on a whim before a movie. Ordered way too much food as usual to try everything the waitress recommended. Relatively empty on a Thursday evening with street parking readily available. Fried plantains, skirt steak, fried cheese (yeah serious) red beans and rice a few pupusas and a tamale. Just for the two of us. Most of the dishes unfortunately where pretty average and not too exiting. However the star of the show were the pupusas. Small round pork and cheese filled discs of joy. I immediately called the restaurant and spoke to the owner, who instead of apologizing for selling us spoiled food, got really offended about my comment. We decided to give Al Fin a chance, and we came out disappointed . The restaurant itself is very clean, with a very good ambience, the service was pretty good, the lady that help us follow our request t, but the food itself is another history. We know Nicaraguan food very well, we had been in just about every Nicaraguan restaurant, and my best suggestion to the honor of this place is to go and order the same food in other restaurants so that he can have an idea of what the real flavor really is. We order a churrasco with chimichurri, the meat was hard, and the chimichurri not even near the real flavor, the fries look like something they got out of the freezer in a hurry. They should try the churrasco at Las Tinajas or Rinconcito Nica both in the Mission, with no exaggeration is 10 times better and the beef is softer. We also order a fish filleted for my kid and what we got was a burned down fillet with a bit of rice for $13.00 dollars, nothing else in the plate. My wife got carne desilachada and that was just ok, nothing out of the ordinary or near to the flavor in the other restaurants we know. So, if you really have to eat Nicaraguan food and the other places are closed I will still recommend you to look for other options, our bill for two people and one kid came to $75.00 dollars, we think we could do way better somewhere else. read more

MANAGER IS RUDE AND LOOKS DOWN ON GROUPON USERS: I asked the manager/owner about our Groupon if it has 2 free drinks included. Spent 10 mins asking a bunch of questions (ex: when was groupon purchased ) instead of taking our order eventhough i've told him I'm ready to order. He said that he has told Groupon to remove the "drinks deal" and if we want to argue about it, we should do so to Groupon. He probably realized that it was wrong of him to say that, he ended up promising to honor our groupon and five us 2 free drinks. After a slow service, which I didn't mind, check came and we were charged with our soda and juice. When I asked why, he said we weren't charge for it but has to be deducted from our $30 Groupon. How is that FREE? I expressed my disgust (no yelling or cursing) and told him that I can afford to pay for $5 drinks but it's just wrong to label it FREE. He walked away, I paid for the full bill after the $30 Groupon and left. NOT GOING BACK THERE. read more

My husband found this restaurant back in 2009. And first time we went, it wasn't great, but it was okay. We went two more times. I went with a friend in May 2010 and the waitress (Marcela) was very obnoxious, either she got up on the wrong side of bed or she doesn't work well with the public. My friend ordered a Fresco de Tamarindo when it arrived it had too much ice so she told the waitress to take some of the ice and to fill it up with more. So when the waitress came back the glass was full but instead of adding more juice she added water to it. Then I had ordered an extra plates to go, fried plantains, fried cheese and cabbage salad. However, I had forgotten to order an extra plate of the same thing. At the end when my plates came, I had three plates so I told her I had only ordered two. She gave me a dirty look and asked if I wanted the salad that goes with the plate, which is what I understood, i said no, "so she took the salad for my two orders". I told her that is not what I had said. She was just plain rude and I will not ever go to this restaurant. Besides this restaurant needs to make up its mind about what it wants to cook, is it Nicaraguan food or is it Central American food and Mexican. Not impressed. Al Fin actually specializes in Nicaraguan food, so it's not your typical Mexican food. My boyfriend and I ordered the Pork Pupusas, Chicken Enchiladas, and the Cheese Quesadilla. I expected more from the Pupusas, but it was still good. The Enchiladas are not your "Chevy's" style. The chicken tasted good but was a little on the salty side. Parking is a bitch here. There is a small area in the back which they call a parking lot (FYI the lot is shared between Reserved spaces and about 10 spaces shared between 4 businesses.) Six of us had dinner here last night. Six of us came away so happy and filled with delicious food it felt like a gift from the Gods. Now I'm thinking I need to go back at least once a week. The chef/owner is a man who truly cares about food and we so much appreciate his love for his work. Consider this: if you make the effort to come here you will not be disappointed. Parking can be difficult, but we don't need to whine about it because it's a fact of life. The waitresses may be inexperienced, but when the food comes to the table you will be so delighted!! Well I'm done with this place! The owner is a rude bafoon who answers the phone for take out as if he's bored to death to be taking your order, and he answers like that all the time. Service in the restaurant is super slow. I once sat there for 12 min with my family before the waiter came up to me. The food isn't the same anymore gallopinto is dry and burned ,carne asada is very small portion, and for the price of the food not good man!!..For me personally if a place has BAD SERVICE, I don't care how good the product is. I'll stop going!!...service is everything to me. That's what keeps me coming back to a place to enjoy myself if it has service, when they care about there customers you'll see these places packed no room at all. This is not Mexican, this isn't El Salvadorean, it's Nicaraguan- You know, that Central American Country next to Honduras? It may be another Latin American country but the flavors are distinct. This is coming from a Mexican. I managed to fall in love with a Nicaraguense and at this point, I'm not sure if it's because of the fried cheese he introduced me to or his charm and good looks: but it really doesn't matter at this point. Why? Well it's because we found Al Fin which is truly a blessing to Daly City and will surely sustain our relationship. For real, this food is awesome. Fried cheese is tricky because if you fry it too long, it can be rubbery, and it's served perfectly here. I have eaten here now 4 times, and each time has been amazing. The Churrasco is tender, flavorful and downright delicioso. Try the carne asada combo: tons of carne asada marinated perfectly, gallo pinto not overfried and not undercooked, platanos fried well, but not dripping with oil. Tonight sealed the deal. I ordered the chancho (fried pork) and it was all I could do to keep it from being eaten by my honey. That tempting. I've only had 3 dishes there, but I'll definitely come back. I quite like the food here. I agree that the attitude among the staff can be a bit brusque, but what the heck. The papusas are great and I thought the plantains (both the soft and crispy) were delicious. I would probably stay away from the fish, which didn't taste so fresh to me and was undercooked (unless they were going for tarare, but then it wasn't fresh enough.) Overall, I like the uniqueness of this place. It's too bad they don't get much traffic, since it is Daly City after all. I hope they stay open. read more

I love me some nica food and when I need my nica fix I go to el fin...its close to home and finally a nica restaurant in d.c. the lady who takes the orders is super friendly and always greets us with a smile. The owner is young and usually in the back he's super cool.. Had a craving for pupusas and this is the only place in the area that I know of that has pupusas, so . . . off we went. There were three of us. We had the quesadilla appetizer - good, real good if you put the pico de gallo and sour cream on top. I had two pupusas revueltas - a bit on the greasy side but what else could it be with pork and cheese stuffing right? #1 son had the camarones al mojo de hajo plate - garlic prawns. Rice was bland, beans ok, prawns very good! #3 son had pupusas plate - two pupusas with rice and beans. Had to take one of the pupusas home - too full to finish there. The orchata was GREAT! chocolaty and cinnamony - almost like chocolate milk - but better. We also had 6 pupusas to go. Total was $54.48 Service was a bit slow and we had to ask for the check but very friendly. Funny, they don't have chips and salsa -- really, we asked for some. Yes, will be coming back. read more

I came here for a lunch invite with family. The beef soup (sopa de carne) I was told was good. The tripe soup (mondongo) I was told was horrific. The pieces of tripe were too tender and the piece of corn had dark kernels which means it was not fresh. The broth had no flavor. Had no beef or pork feet which this dish supposed to have. Don't bother ordering this kind of soup. The pupusas were nothing to write home about. The masa tasted like it was made from a powder and they were too thin, not fluffy. Cheese tastes ok but I wouldn't come here for pupusas. They are not generous with the curtido ( the cabbage salad that should always accompany pupusas) so we had to ask for more. The server brought more although we had to ask for it twice. It was watery with not enough vinegar. I have not tasted the other dishes nor members of our party. The place is really clean and neat and the server was cordial and pleasant. I don't think I will be back though as I was underwhelmed with the food. read more

Al fin I'm not could to sugar coat: first I've have gone to this restaurant a few times. The food nothing to rave about, I eat there today I order the gallo pinto,Madura,just the basic. Gallo pinto is rice and beads mix.The rice taste like left over Chinese rice I could taste Chinese flavor' there left over Chinese rice from days ago. I could sill taste the Chinese flavor in my mouth. I don't recommend any one to go Al Fin....... Plus the the customers that go there are rude. All together food, rude services, rude customers.... The lady tricked us into buying the most expensive dishes and was kinda of rude explaining oh you have to spend this much. We were only two adults and they automatically included the tip in the bill. We have been here in the past 4-5 times. Food is good, a bit expensive, the portions are small, and the service is slow, but usually the food makes up for it. This time however was the deal breaker. We will never go back. After waiting over 50 minutes and watching the other tables come in after us, eating, and leaving, before we got our food. I politely asked the waitress if everything was ok in the kitchen, or if the cook was new. She only replied, no and sorry. There were only five of us, 2 bowls of soup, steak dinner, one taco, and a chicken dinner. Its not like it was a difficult order. Once we received our order, the chicken dinner was incorrect and not the order that was placed, my steak was burnt on one side and well over cooked, my mashed potatoes were cold and the veggies were overdone. We expressed our concerns politely with the waitress, explaining our displeasure, thinking perhaps she may comp our drinks, half off our meal, free dessert, something. But no, she must of been so annoyed, we then had to wait an additional 15 for our bill. Its a shame they lost a regular customer, and need to learn how to rectify a bad situation. The food there is very very good. Sometimes the rice isn't cooked nicely, but rather kind of over-cooked. The food is a little on the expensive side, but it is worth it. the drinks are good!!! The top drinks are the horchatas and the tamarindos! The sangria isn't a typical sangria drink. I do have to give two stars for the food. The service I'll give one star. The waitress greets you with a half-ass smile and is in a rush to take your order. Once the waitress takes your order she goes on to doing other things; her own personal things. She does not do her side-work. The several times I went there she was either reading or eating in front of us. I understand when there are slow days and there is nothing to do, but doing your own personal chores aren't professional like. The management needs to fix that. Pupusas are not Nicaraguan so if the the guy there can't even get his own food right how do you expect him to get some other country's right either? Don't order Nacatamales, they taste like anything but. Looking at them swimming in grease unnecessarily is not pleasant either. I was so upset when I came out that I felt violated.
