Came for lunch on a weekday and we were seated quickly with friendly and fast service. I tried the street tacos with corn tortillas and it came with beef, beans, and some veggies sides. They missed the avocados so asked if we wanted them after delivering the food. The food tasted pretty good as I consider it Texmex. The flour tortillas are stuff and fluffy while the complementary chips and salsa tasted fresh and good. They also refilled it for us when it was out. Portion size was perfect and price was about average to high for the amount of food. Note that the beans are a little on the watery side but I was full after the meal and satisfied. They also gave us about 4 flour tortillas as well with the meal. The ambience and food are good so this is great place to bring friends visiting or those looking for easy choices for TexMex. Lots of options on the menu as well. Note that the food is not especially spicy and spiced and may not satisfy those with a preference for more flavorful fare. read more

What the hell happened?? This is a San Antonio staple that our family has been going to for decades. It is not the best Mexican food in town, but it is consistent....at least it was. Our last visit the food was almost inedible. Our chips were so hard you almost broke a tooth, the queso was very watery, the meals were disgusting. Had to actually use a knife to cut the cheese enchiladas......and even then it was difficult. Have no idea how they managed to ruin the food, but they did. They are losing an entire generation of people by sacrificing quality as my kids will NEVER eat there after we spent at least 3-4 nights a month eating there. We have been going to Alamo Cafe since it opened on San Pedro a couple blocks from N. Star Mall many years ago. The tortilla soup and beef fajitas in particular were above and beyond, a delicious experience. Lately, the past year, it has been a big disappointment. First the restaurant on IH10 changed the soup, watering it down, perhaps to cut the super saltiness the soup has had the past 5 years. The fajita meat is now in dry tough strips thrown in a tortilla instead of cut in bites. The restaurant on San Pedro and Bitters kept the old recipe until just recently and now is serving the watered down soup and dry uncut fajitas. Chips, salsa, queso and tortillas were still good. It was a family favorite until now! Save your money... the Alamo Cafe is cutting corners while raising prices. read more

My husband used to love this place and we have come a handful of times over the years. Each time we come here the food gets worse and today is officially last time we will ever eat here. The food was terrible. The chips were stale. We ordered the poblano queso which used to be really good. It came this time with no flavor and it doesn't have some of the poblanos in it like it used to. Asked the waiter to replace with the regular queso. It wasn't much different. It was watery and boring. All of our meals were very disappointing. My daughter had the chicken fried steak and it was rubbery and hard to cut. My son had a bean and cheese taco. The beans look and taste like rehydrated beans. My husbands chicken was tough and cold. My quesadilla was hard and the pico de gallo tasted like it was 3 days old. 2.5 Stars. I'm sorry to say, I just don't get the hype. I'll start off by saying this restaurant has a really cool ambiance. I wasn't expecting that when we first walked in. It's just a beautiful place with waterfalls and pretty lights. Our waiter Nathan was so friendly & provided great service. The chips are some of the best I've ever had in a Mexican food restaurant and I really liked the salsa. It is very tomato-y so keep that in mind if that's not your preference. I will also say the guacamole was very good. Those were the only positives unfortunately. When we were seated I noticed all the tables around us were empty, but still dirty and cluttered with items. Doesn't bother me, but worth mentioning if that's something that would bug you as far as cleanliness goes. The booth we sat in was ripped in multiple places on the seat so it wasn't a very comfortable experience. The bathrooms were also pretty gross. We left at 9:15 and noticed the restaurant closed at 10, but both bathrooms had already been mopped as if they were closed down for the night. No big deal, except the stalls were still filthy with trash and TP all over the floor. Someone had just mopped around it. Honestly though, the worst part was the food. After seeing all the positive raving reviews I was really let down. I ordered a Dinner #1 & my husband ordered a Dinner #2. The only way to tell a difference in the items on that combo plate was because the textures were different. Everything was extremely bland and all tasted the exact same. Seriously. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant in my life that was so unflavored. I think it's probably pretty hard to mess up cheese enchiladas, yet they were the worst I've ever had. Those two plates plus our appetizer (also cold & bland) were over $40. It pains me to say that there's a Taco Cabana down the road where you could get more flavor & pay a better price. read more

For a bustling Friday night, a 20 minute wait time was not bad at all for a party of 2. We came in, got on the waitlist and decided to sit at the bar for a drink while we waited. Chavelle (who was kicking ass behind the bar) helped us within less than 5 minutes even while drowning in orders and needy customers. I find it extremely ruthless to let her handle that stress all by herself. It should be managements duty to find help and or coverage or shoot even help them selves when there is nobody around to help her. Having no drink runner or anybody to really help at all on a friday night is absurd. This restaurant has always held a special place in my heart. I live in Dallas now but when I come back to SA I always make sure to make a trip here. It has the most fun San Antonio vibe being centered around the Alamo and is huge inside, perfect for large groups of people! Service is always pretty good. Our waitress last night was sweet and helpful. She could have been a bit more attentive, especially after we ate she only came by once to clear our plates, but other than that she was great. Food is always so good here. The queso here is my ALL TIME FAVORITE queso. It's what I grew up on, so I may be biased, but I don't think so. It's really delicious and very cheesy. The level of spicy is always unreliable, sometimes being so hot it's hard to eat and other times not at all but that's not their fault. My family always gets the combo fajitas. The beef fajita meet is always great and never chewy. It comes with plenty of sides that make for the perfect fajita. I have started getting the Ensalada salad which is my new favorite. Their ranch dressing is incredible and it's just a great portion for the price, really fills you up. It could use a tad more lettuce in comparison to the other ingredients though. Their house margarita is also my FAVORITE. I can't do house margaritas at any other place because margarita mix is disgusting to me but this one is off the charts. Come for happy hour and get a great deal! The location is beautiful, the restaurant is very nice, there is a little river that runs through part of it and the outdoor seating area is great. That is the only good thing I can say. The food was the worst mexican food I have ever had. The Spanish rice was hard and not cooked thoroughly, the refried beans lacked any kind of flavor, the puffy Taco was a greasy and soggy mess. I wouldn't think you could mess up cheese enchiladas but , surprise, you can. The cheese they use is some sort of weird processed cheese that's worse than velveta. The clincher for this disaster lunch was the service. We sat outside and our waitress was rude and clueless. There were 9 of us and she messed up 6 orders. 3 of us had food and the other 6 had to wait to have the food redone as the orders were totally wrong. I wouldn't suggest a better wait staff and better recipes. So sad as the restaurant is lovely, is at a good location and has a lot of potential. read more

Including Mexican food aficionados...BUT If you're looking for more of a traditional Mexican menu line-up and atmosphere, there are other good picks out there which may suit your pallet; just ask me and I'll send them your way! Secondly, I now (for the past couple of years) only sit at the bar. They have an absolute GEM as a bartender; Ashley. Always, always, super friendly, works the bar in a seemingly effortless fashion, and keeps her co-workers in check at all times. There's absolutely no standing around time when Ash is working, because stuff is getting done. My recommendation, make her a Bar Manager, bump up her pay to cover her loss in incredible tips (I'm sure), and let her teach this new generation how to efficiently and effectively run a full-service bar. I'm holding out on a five-star Yelp! Review until they have a live Mariachi Band playing here every weekend. My mom and I were visiting Texas for a week and came upon this gem! We wanted to try Tex-Mex and this place hit the spot! After eating here, I will probably always compare future Mexican food to this. It was sooooo good, I practically licked my plate. My mom got the Chile relleno and I got the Puffy tacos. My tacos were delicious! The shells were the best I have ever tasted. They were light and airy, yet crispy. I could have eaten them plain! The chicken was tender and flavorful. The relleno was filled with cheese and meat, and still remained crispy. We devoured the chips and salsa. It was an amazing experience. Our server was attentive, quick, and friendly. The staff was very accommodating ensuring our drinks were topped off and tending to our needs. The wife and I enjoyed our late lunch. All can be said is Alamo used to have the best Margarita on town, not anymore. The owner has listened to her managers that she needed to change. She told us it would be a better Margarita, hand shocked with fresh lime juice. Went for an invite set down with her and yes they used fresh lime juice that once to make us believe it was going to be served like that. We are now at least months into the New Margarita. Every time you go on your Margarita taste different. Management told me yesterday you just don't like the mix. Otherwise get over it! Kasey your customers that have been coming for years come for your original Margarita, and yes it was top shelf. Not anymore.
