Ive been coming to san antonio forever and have never been here. Very nice location and the inside hasa small creek running through part of it. Good service and food the chickened steak was good. This was the second time I had been to this specific place. I ordered the exact same thing and disappointed. The first time all was pretty good so we came back as a family for this time and I am not impressed. To start I had the fried jalapeños this time there were soggy, cheese tasted bad, and the breading tasted like panko. Last time I had them they were crispy and very good. I had the two tacos one beef which was good and one chicken which was disgusting. Almost like it was bad. Last time I was at this place everything was totally different and good. My wife had the shrimp enchiladas which she said was good but the shrimp was over cooked. We had the chips and what was supposed to be salsa purée but seemed to be hot sauce seasoned and the warmed tortillas. The warm tortillas were good. That filled me up which was good since my meal was not so good. Our waiter was alright. Seemed to be overwhelmed but tried his best. He was on top of it by having our drinks filled and asked if everything was alright. What I understand is this is a hit or miss. So, if you haven't been be prepared for anything. The tables are sticky, like they could use a good scrubbing. The plates are not always clean. You may get a leftover from someone else, but you can taste the different meal which maybe better than yours. I am not saying it's bad, just don't have an expectation walking in. read more

The food came out quick. It was busy but the place is huge inside so lots of seating. Tortillas are very good .

We recently placed an order for several dozen breakfast tacos for a birthday party. Ordering was as easy as a quick email communication. Pick up was on time and complete. Everything was labeled and in warming tins, so I did not have to worry about set up (so appreciated!). The tacos were HUGE and delicious! Fresh tasting even after the party ended. We had 18 toddlers and their parents. My morning could have been chaos, instead I was able to enjoy and catch up with company. I had a total of 3 spoons to clean after the party! Every parent asked where the tacos were from, they were a hit! We will absolutely be ordering again. Also, I always make a stop here on my way to the airport before visiting family in Illinois. While they are excited to see me, they are more excited for warm tortillas. read more

I'm disappointed with the amount of ingredients. I like the flautas, but in the fried tortilla there is only about 1 1/2 inch of chicken. Both ends are fried to a crisp. This has been the norm over the last many visits. Today i switched to crispy beef tacos. We are officially DONE with Alamo Cafe after nearly 3 decades of dining there. The food is terrible! Literally gave it 3 more tries as a family and 3 strikes- you are out. Made a last minute decision to satisfy a Tex-Mex craving and grab dinner at Alamo Cafe. Yelp showed there was a wait and offered a waitlist (love that!) so we signed up and headed out the door. It was PACKED. Viewing the waitlist showed numerous large parties (10+) ahead of us (2) but once we checked in with the hostess, we only waited about 2 minutes, if that, before we were notified our table was ready. Zelda was our server. She was friendly, knowledgeable, made great recommendations, and very attentive considering how busy it was. She truly was fantastic. We started with queso. A little salty but nothing pairs better with those fresh warm tortillas! We ordered the carne guisada and substituted the rice with mashed potatoes at Zelda's suggestion. The beef was tender and stew-like, making it the perfect comfort food combo for a chilly evening. Next time we'll switch both sides for double mash since it could have used a touch more. We also ordered the fajita trio for one. Meat was flavorful and tender, and the shrimp were tasty. Next time I'll ask for some lime wedges on the side because a squeeze of fresh lime would have made it perfect. We couldn't finish our meals so we were clearly out of room for dessert. Our glasses were never empty. Always a plus! The table side checkout device was super convenient, especially on a super busy night. It's really pretty inside but that's about it. It was pretty pricey and I wouldn't recommend unless scenery is that important to you, or if you are sensitive to spices because it's very bland here. Only visited once, but met the girls for an impromptu night out and had a lovely time. I all of us ate, but we all had drinks and a lot of fun. Our waiter was patient and charming as our group trickled in from various jobs. Those of us who ordered food all liked them well enough, but wouldn't order it again. It seems just generic Americanized texmex on offer. The drinks were the same. A little too sweet to get any real tang and we all had various kinds of margaritas. There should be some tartness there. Not bad, just not worth seeking out. The part where Alamo Cafe really shines is the experience. The place is beautiful and the staff is very kind and funny. It really is a good place to meet up. We finally got a table and we told our server we were ready to order once we sat which wasn't a problem. Drinks came out but our food did take a while to come out. Think we had 10-15 min until we had to get back until we got our food. The shrimp enchiladas were okay, good size shrimps but the sauce was a little bland. It came with rice and beans The rice was a little hard with some bites but the beans and no flavor at all. I've been here once before and ordered the shrimp avocado salad with the lemon dressing and that was delicious. Been coming to Alamo Cafe for years and the last few visits have been extremely disappointing. The service has always been outstanding but the quality of food is awful. I was informed the rice has recently been changed so I was so excited to give it a try because the rice has never been good. I gave it a try today and it tastes exactly the same, if not worse, if that's even possible. Similar story for the margaritas. Y'all used to have great margaritas but now they taste like cheap lime mixer with tequila mixed in. I think the cherry on top was the air conditioning was either set to a warm temperature or broken?? Food is not that great and you can tell it was precooked since it arrived approximately 4 minutes after ordering. The menu stated the fajita taco would be stuffed but it was skimpy. I asked for a hot salsa and it was not spicy at all and was 1.50 extra. The place was nice and fancy but that was the extent of it. I say a 2/10 rating for food, and 10/10 on the building aesthetics. The borracho beans, although small in number, were tasty and medium warm. Did not try the rice. The beef puffy tacos were perhaps the smallest puffy tacos I've had in the city of San Antonio and the "seasoned beef" was almost over seasoned; actually, a tad bitter for my taste. Chips were fine but the catsup tasting dipping sauce was a complete turn off to me. It could have stood a little onion and/or cilantro as well as some salt. The tablespoon of guacamole was thin and almost watery. I ordered a meal to go and added 4 sopapillas which never made my bag; someone in the serving chain forgot (?) to add them to my to go order of enchilada plate #4 (beef enchilada, beef crispy taco). My bad for not checking my order before I left. That won't happen again. Aside from that, service was the only really bright light in an otherwise dismal Wednesday lunch. The to go order turned out to be just average with no remarkable points, no real bad points. At least the chips were decent. Nothing today at this once iconic place "shouted" come back.
