Hong Kong Cafe (Atlantic) -- 5/5 9/10/26 -- 2:30 PM --…read moreMonterey Park, CA My God, I'm going to be 300 pounds by the time I get home. Hong Kong Cafe is located at Atlantic Times Square, a charming old-school cluster of shops and restaurants in Monterey Park. Free underground parking was especially appreciated on a roughly 97-degree September afternoon. Getting upstairs was slightly confusing because of construction and a closed escalator, but once we found the restaurant, things improved immediately. The facade is cool, but the interior is even better: spacious, clean, comfortable, with colorful illuminated Chinese and English signs. It has a wonderful classic Hong Kong café atmosphere that reminded me of the 1980s. The mellow Chinese music added greatly to the happy, relaxed vibe. I started with a lemon black tea--sweet, cold and exactly what I wanted on a brutally hot day. The XO sauce beef with udon noodles was excellent. The udon had a terrific pan-fried texture, and the beef had a slightly citrusy note that worked surprisingly well. Then came pure comfort food: the Hong Kong-style ham and egg pineapple bun. It's basically spam, lettuce, tomato, soft French-style scrambled egg and lightly lemony mayo inside a sweet pineapple bun. Nothing complicated, yet somehow the flavors worked beautifully together. It briefly transported me to a Hong Kong Island tea café near Sogo. I was already full. Naturally, I ordered dessert. The Ovaltine French toast was fantastic: thick, fluffy Chinese-style bread, golden outside, properly buttered, with Ovaltine and condensed milk inside. Cutting into it released the filling across the plate and into the cinnamon decoration. Rich, messy and memorable. I ate everything too quickly because it was that good. The large menu also offers plenty of Hong Kong comfort food, including chicken rice, Chinese-style egg and meat dishes, risotto-style dishes, several kinds of juk/congee and much more. Service was prompt, sincere and error-free. This could easily become my Monterey Park go-to for Hong Kong comfort food. Great food, great music, great atmosphere and well beyond my expectations. 5/5. Happily stuffed. 5/5。

There are a few Canto cafés around here, but this one is definitely one of our favorites. Dim sum is pretty easy to find, but authentic Cantonese cafés are much more of a rare find. The lower reviews are probably due to the service, but in my opinion, a truly authentic Cantonese restaurant should have questionable service because that's exactly what you get at the good places in Hong Kong. The philosophy in Hong Kong is basically "food over service." If they're being too nice, they're probably overcompensating for something haha. Getting either the hot or iced milk tea or lemon tea is a MUST. It's the traditional way to do it, and they even offer unlimited refills! Just be warned that you might not sleep that night because Hong Kong-style tea is no joke when it comes to caffeine. Pro tip: If you get the lemon tea, you have to crush the lemons into the tea to get the right flavor! My friends and I are regulars here. They're open late, and the ambiance is so fun, with tables decorated with mahjong tiles and neon lights that basically scream Asia. The food is top tier and, in my opinion, some of the best Cantonese food you'll find in the U.S. Our go-to orders are the tomato baked rice dishes, stir-fried vegetables, 3-cup dishes, and brisket curries. For something sweet, we always share the classic Cantonese French toast with peanut butter inside or one of the pineapple buns. Definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for an authentic Canto café experience! :)

The melted cheese on top made this dish so delicious! - Chicken (Half) - 7/10 - This was good but it just tasted like any the chicken at any other place. - Chinese greens - 7/10 - This was okay. Preferred stronger flavors as this tasted kind of bland. - Curry Beef Stew / Tendons - 9/10 - Very tender! I liked this a lot! Would definitely order again! Lemon Iced Tea was yummy! Service was good. Restaurant was clean. Love the H.K. Vibe.

As an employee, she should have been setting an example and treating customers fairly--not using her position to give preferential treatment to a friend. What made the situation even worse was that I brought it to the staff's attention, and instead of taking the complaint seriously or even acknowledging what happened, they simply brushed it off. That kind of response shows a complete lack of respect for customers. It's one thing for an employee to make a poor judgment call; it's another for management or staff to dismiss a legitimate concern afterward. Customers should not have to wonder whether the rules apply equally to everyone. I left feeling completely disregarded and disappointed. Based on this experience, I would think twice before returning.

I had the iced coffee and also got a refill to go, with no issues. Mom's passion fruit lemon tea was fabulous. 5/5...but they won't give you a go to refill of it, however you can get it refilled to go if it's lemon tea. But order the passion fruit. And put a smile on your face. This place was one of the few places open during the pandemic lockdown...but they have clearly earned local loyalty. I'm a fan of this place now. Wanna try more from their menu. Tip...don't mind the servers, there were only two servers the day we were there...they are busy, seem unfriendly and nontalkative, but I watched them being watchful over the diners from the kitchen entrance, and if you need something very easy to attract their attention for extras like forks, napkins, refills...and they box up your leftovers, so you don't have to do it. Great service, just without smiles. 5/5

Interior is simple & clean, kind of gives you the feel of being in an actual cafe, in Hong kong. Staffers were attentive at the beginning, but once our food arrived, they never came back to check on us or refill our waters. I ordered the chicken steak with pork chop with black pepper sauce. The proteins were fine, but only got an underwhelming amount of black pepper sauce. The wife order a soup noodle dish, and she said it was fine, average all around. With all said and done, our feelings were just ok, nothing to wow you. 3.1 stars, score could of been a little higher if we would of gotten our water refilled!

Funny, I drive by this place all the time. I never knew they are same as Hong Kong Cafe - Atlantic until now. Well, they aren't exactly the same. This spot is much smaller, but its interior still has that Hong Kong feel to it. Their menu has a good selection of food items. Prices are reasonable. I phoned in my order for 1 Seafood Chow Mein and 1 Red Bean Shaved Ice. I wanted ice cream with the red bean, but they didn't serve it with ice cream which was a bummer. Oh well. Total bill was barely over $20. Perfect! Got my 2nd stamp. Thanks! Lady staff was nice and friendly. My order was ready upon arrival. Seafood chow mein was good, but seafood portion was small. Red bean shaved ice was tasty, but cup size was small. Maybe everything is small because it's a small location. Who knows. Honestly, I don't see myself coming back to this location. Still glad I gave them a try. Good luck Hong Kong Cafe - Garvey!
