Al's Special
Lauren C.

Got: Al's Special - turkey, provolone + Hot Pastrami - medium peppers Godfather - medium peppers Ordered to go. Service friendly. Efficient. Sandwiches were ready in under 10 minutes. Prices for small 6" were $14 or large 11" $18. Of course it made sense to get the large! Bread is pretty decent. House made sourdough-like roll that is chewy, a little crunchy and not difficult to eat. Toothsome in just the right way. Fillings were fairly abundant, fresh. Flavors of the Godfather were a little bland compared to the Godmother of BC in SM. Not entirely sure what the difference is - salt & pepper? Italian seasoning or dressing? Will have to do some more investigating back at BC's (yeah!) Nice place. Some tables inside but all were full on this winter day. Tables outside as well. Some parking with more in neighborhood. Definitely recommend and would go back if I'm in the area.

The Godfather (L) $17.95

What I Ordered: -The Godfather (L) $17.95 Works w/Extra Hot Peppers "Come at the king, you best not miss" - Omar from The Wire. That's how I feel about All About the Bread's take on the Godmother sandwich. All About the Bread's "Godfather" sandwich features a blend of spicy capicola, mortadella, ham, prosciutto, and Genoa salami, along with provolone cheese and standard toppings. I added extra hot peppers, but, in my opinion, they weren't very spicy; they seemed to use Giardiniera peppers. Also, be aware that they use a generous amount of mustard. While the meat quality doesn't quite match Bay Cities, the bread at All About the Bread is truly exceptional and lives up to their name. It's much softer than Bay Cities' chewy filone, so your jaw will thank you. I particularly love the bubbly crust; it offers a satisfying crunch without being overly chewy, and the bread's fluffiness is something special. You should definitely check it out! While Bay Cities may have the edge with their version of the Godmother/Godfather, All About the Bread's bread is superior. I'd explore other sandwiches here, but I wouldn't order the Godmother again because I find it more enjoyable at Bay Cities. The Godfather isn't the king of Italian subs in my opinion, at least not yet. My friend, who frequents both places, agrees that Bay Cities' Godmother is the better choice. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the sandwiches are prepared quickly. I appreciate the shop's ample seating both inside and out, and it's nice to eat and people-watch on Melrose.

Honey Lime Chicken

Loved the honey lime chicken sandwich! Not sure if mine had any jalapeño - wished there was more heat. The bread was soft and a little chewy (in a good way of course)

Sandwiches were good! Custom service and staff was great! Staff was able to make accommodation for my toddler niece.

We had some very good sandwiches. The bread is the best thing, as name implies. I like a thinner bread with a crisp to it and soft inside and that's it! Generous portion of meat and cheese. Super easy online ordering and our stuff was ready quickly. Nice price for a good size sandwich. I had the Godfather and the regular size sandwich was 2 meals for me. The shop is bright and clean and the staff were incredibly nice. The chocolate chip cookies are great too.

The Godfather with potato salad

I stopped in today and ordered the Godfather from the really nice guy behind the counter. He took my order and right away I could tell this place was gonna be good. Super friendly, outgoing, and just had good energy. Let's start tho with the interior. Super clean, wide open space with tall ceilings, big windows, and lots of natural light. The layout is simple, and everything feels nice and organized. You can see all the meats and sides through the glass. It just gives off that legit deli vibe, and I love that. Now the sandwich. The Godfather is loaded. It comes with spicy capicola, mortadella, prosciutto di parma, black forest ham, genoa salami, and provolone. Then they pile it with pickles, onions, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, Italian dressing, mustard, vegan mayo, and some Chicago peppers. It's got that classic Italian flavor, and everything inside tasted fresh and balanced. The meats were packed with flavor and the dressing combo gave it that nice tang and little bit of heat. My only really small complaint was the bread. It was great, but just a little more chewy than I expected. I usually like my bread softer, but it still held up well with everything stuffed inside. No mess, no sogginess. Just wish it had a softer bite. I also ordered a side of their potato salad, and I was honestly surprised how good it was. Creamy, cold, flavorful, and you can tell it's made in-house. Probably one of the better potato salads I've had from a deli. Oh, and by the way, the gentleman who took my order?... turns out he was the manager. While I was sitting there eating my lunch, he came over and handed me a complimentary bottle of water. That was classy. First-class move. I'll definitely be back.

Will never come back here again. After I got an order to go, they refused to let me use the bathroom. Apparently, their policy is onlt for dine-in. Manager is on a power trip and petty!

I've had my eye on this place for a year now. Came in on a whim as I was in the area. I had good expectations from all the reviews, but wow, this place really speaks for itself! Raphael was very kind and gave us recommendations on what to get--the Godfather and Milan Salami. Each one an amazing sub, and the bread, incredibly fresh. Definitely will be coming back as it's run by an amazing crew. Glad to have dropped by!

Sandwich is affordable and tasty! They make their bread in house. Highly recommend the godfather with the works. It is so delicious! Just wish they would have an ice cup to go with their canned sodas. Staff are friendly and helpful when placing orders. They have a big screened tv and they were showing football the day I went. They have table indoors and outdoors. Small parking lot in front of them that is shared with other shops.

Pretty good sandwich spot that definitely fulfills your sandwich cravings. I got the Turkey Club which was rich from the mustard and italian dressing. It was really good and I liked the crisp bread too. The menu was easy to navigate and their Godfather is their most popular sandwich. I also tried their Italian sandwich, my girlfriend loved this sandwich. I probably won't go out my way to get All About the Bread but there's really nothing to complain about, I'm just comparing it to other spots.

The Godfather, medium works!

Shoutout to All about the BREAD! my new favorite sandwich spot. I live in Santa Monica, and will drive out of my way or DoorDash because this sandwich spot is so GOOD! I love a good Italian sub. We have Bay Cites where I live in Santa Monica and they call the sandwich there the godmother. Well folks the Godfather is a way tastier sandwich... just saying, and the BREAD! Omg so good and fresh, best bread in LA. The bread is baked hot and fresh every 20 min. The service in store is excellent, staff is attentive and then even have JUMBO dill pickles! You must check out this sandwich spot if you are on Melrose. I would drive any day from Santa Monica to Melrose because it's that good! #happycustomer #lovethegodfather

Thoroughly enjoy all the hot sandwiches, not so fond of the cold ones. Their bread is similar to Bay Cities Deli's, so that was a treat.

Can you buy just the bread by the loaf?

Nope! I tried ordering just a loaf of bread but they said they didn't sell by the loaf.

Does this place deliver or work with any delivery companies? If so which one? Thx!

DoorDash

Is it possible to buy fresh baguettes?

Nope

Is the Godfather the exact same sandwich as the Godmother at Bay Cities Deli?

I had the Godfather today. It's very similar, and it's AMAZING. Not *quite* as good as the Godmother (because they ask you to add ingredients yourself through Postmates) but it's very close. I'm nowhere near Bay Cities but I'm pretty close to AATB.…

Do they wear gloves when making your sandwich?

Yes.

The meatball sub does it have pork I've gotten two different answers from store employees?

It has pork

I had no idea if LANGER'S was as good as I had heard others rave. Today, being in the area on business over to HACLA, I decided to drive a 1/2 mile (approx) east on Wilshire (at Rampart), to the southeast corner of Alvarado & 8th Street. Circled LANGER'S block once, as parking is not too easy to come by, but I found one metered space across the west side of Alvarado right across from LANGER'S. I parked and crossed the street. Once inside, a very courteous female voice greeted: "WELCOME". Turns out it was the voice of SHAE, one of the Hostesses. I immediately held her at attention as I proceeded to tell Shae, the story you just read of how long I've know of LANGER'S but never stopped in. I also suggested to Shae, to go to YOUTUBE and search for one of HUEL HOUSER'S "VISITING" segments. HUEL featured LANGER'S on the segment entitled, "COW TONGUE / VISITING WITH HUELL HOUSER!" Shae promised she'd look it up. Well, for now, let's just tell you: LANGER'S had been slated (last year) to close its doors forever. And I was appalled (at the thought) I'd NEVER enjoyed a PASTRAMI or COW TONGUE sandwich. As of tonight, I got a belly full of a very delicious cow tongue deli sandwich, my wife, the pastrami and we're fine. Try one! You won't regret it. BTW, if you call (and you CAN) your order by phone or on line, they provide curbside service. One of my featured photos shows that PICKUP section. OK! For now, that's it and thanks!

Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. For this visit, I started off with a cup of the Chili and thought it was actually really good. I am a huge fan of chili and don't often get some that I really love, but this was definitely one of those. Next came the Mini Blintzes and these were pretty nice. I prefer a full Blintz because it has a lot more cheese and filling, but still these were a nice start, especially if are were new to this appetizer. For my entrée, I chose the Pastrami Reuben and thought it was great. It was honestly huge and I even forgot to take a picture of it because I was excited to eat it. It was plenty for both my husband and I to share a single sando. For the sides, the steak fries needed a lil salt but otherwise a decent filler side. The slaw was creamy and crisp and very refreshing. The pickles were a little under pickled and tasted a lil more cucumber-y than we'd like. Overall a solid experience and we'd visit again when we're back in the area.
