    Kalua pork lunch plate
    Jennifer H.

I had Aloha Cafe bookmarked for a while. I finally got a chance to try it out. I wasn't sure what to order so I got the Kalua pork plate. They provided a generous portion of meat. I felt the plate was lacking veggies. There is some cabbage on the plate but not enough. It was just protein and carbs. I also ordered 2 spam musubis. Those were delicious as well.

I haven't been here since they changed their hours changed. They went from open most of the week to only a few days for takeout and catering so was not around when they were open. Today we were looking for breakfast, went walking around and saw on Yelp that they were open. We went in and were warmly greeted. They had a simple menu, mostly lunch items but also had off menu breakfast items as well. We got the Komai breakfast which included 2 of each meats (spam, portugues saisage, vienna sausage), corned beef hash patty, 2 eggs, 2 scoops of rice and 2 bread rolls. Big breakfast. So good.

We were referred by a friend for the catering offered by the cafe. Contact regarding the menu options was easy and clear. We made an appointment to.come taste the entrees and the portions and selections were delicious and generous for a nominal fee. We've booked them for our event, but I'll come back for lunch at the cafe. The items were wonderful!

Delightful casual little restaurant that features delicious Hawaiian fare. Exquisitely fresh ingredients. Hubby and I loved the huge Loco Moco (couldn't finish!) , the fruit plate, and the side salad. Service was stellar. Even though they say it's "Take Out" only, there were a dozen or so well-kept tables and booths that were wonderful to sit at. Prices were super reasonable. Highly recommend.

Don't remember how I heard about this place, but I'm sure I didn't read that it's a to go place only. Which is kind of confusing because it occupies a full restaurant location with tables and chairs. The person who took my order said they mostly do catering. I did order the loco moco. As you can see by the picture it was drenched in the gravy. Really, more like a 3.5, but I rounded up. Not someplace I'd be going back to.

Ask the Community - Aloha Café

Is this place going to stay closed until June 2023 or is Yelp misinformed?

We were there for a private party in December 2022. We are also hoping to have another private party in late February 2023. Not sure what their plans are for regular hours in 2023. Will see if I can find out additional information.

Is there full indoor dining now?

No, as of 3/26 there were only two tables just inside the entrance for indoor seating. The rest of the restaurant is still closed for seating. Take out is still an option.

    Is breakfast served all day?

    Yes :)

Are they open during COVID-19 says open at 8am but no one has answered phone for 30 minutes ? Or new hours?

Yes they are open. Usually by 9am

Why are they always closed? I've went before the closing time of 4pm and they're never open

On sundays they close at 2pm and every other day @3pm

Does anyone know if Aloha Cafe makes party platters?

Yes they have a catering menu and are wonderful about helping accommodate the amount based on your guest count.

    Is it dog friedly?

No it's not. They only have indoor seating.

The garlic shrimp was deep fried and not grilled or steamed which was different. Top Restaurant is…read moretucked into a small, rundown shopping center on Colorado Blvd in Pasadena and from the outside you'd never guess what's waiting inside. This is my third visit and every single time it delivers. This is an Indonesian/Hawaiian restaurant -- and a seriously impressive one. The menu spans both worlds, and no matter which direction you go, you're in for something special. Take out only, no tables, but trust me -- you won't care. The 4 Piece Indonesian Fried Chicken with rice is an absolute must. Some of the best fried chicken I have ever had. The crust is insanely crispy, the seasoning is perfect, and the Indonesian dipping sauce ties it all together in a way that's completely unique. This alone is worth the drive. The Hawaiian plates are equally impressive. The short ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, the beef and chicken were perfectly marinated -- sweet, savory, and deeply flavorful. Everything comes with rice and a creamy mac salad, and the Hawaiian Sun drinks (Mango Orange and Strawberry Lilikoi) are the perfect companion to wash it all down. Plates run between $16-$20 but the portions are generous and the quality is exceptional -- you absolutely get your money's worth. The owner and cook are extraordinarily welcoming, and everything comes out hot and fresh every single time. Top Restaurant is a hidden gem of the highest order. If you're in Pasadena, make the trip.

Even after arriving, I almost changed my mind about ordering because the plaza itself looked very old and rough. I brought my girlfriend with me, and she was actually the one who said that since we were already there, we might as well try it. The restaurant is basically takeout only, and the inside is very simple and worn down. That said, the person taking our order was extremely friendly, which made the experience much better right away. After checking Yelp, I decided to order the Indonesian fried rice, BBQ chicken, and fried chicken. The fried rice was easily the highlight. I got it spicy, and it had a nice kick that made it feel more special. I'm not sure if this is part of the Indonesian style, but there were little bits of noodles mixed into the fried rice, which made it unique and really tasty. It also had a generous amount of meat inside, and the portion was huge. It was probably one of the best fried rice dishes I've had recently. The BBQ chicken was solid too. It had that tasty Hawaiian-style plate lunch feel, came with mac salad, and was seasoned well. The fried chicken was a little mixed for me. The crispy outside was good, but the chicken itself had a slight off taste, like it didn't feel as fresh as I hoped. Not terrible, but definitely not my favorite item. Overall, Top Restaurant surprised me in a good way. The place itself is very no-frills, but the fried rice alone makes it worth coming back. I'd definitely return for that.

I was there with a couple of friends, but I could definitely see couples enjoying the setting. Parking is street parking only, though valet is available if you'd rather not deal with it. The area was busy, but I was able to find a spot without too much effort. We ordered a handful of dishes to share. The standout appetizer for me was the Spam Crispy Rice. The rice was crispy without being overly hard, and the flavors worked really well together. Simple, but done right. The Tempura Cauliflower was another solid choice. It had a nice crunch on the outside, and the tangy sauce gave it enough flavor to keep things interesting without overwhelming the dish. The Crab Cake was probably my favorite item of the night. It was moist, flavorful, and packed with crab rather than filler. Definitely something I'd order again. The Malama Mochiko Chicken was good, but it didn't leave much of an impression compared to the other dishes we tried. Nothing wrong with it, just not the most memorable item on the table. Finally, we shared the Lobster Noodles. They were very garlicky, which I enjoyed, but thankfully not swimming in butter. The lobster was cooked well, and the dish felt rich without being too heavy. Service was attentive throughout the meal, and our food came out at a good pace. Prices are on the higher side, but not surprising given the location, atmosphere, and seafood-focused menu. Overall, I had a good experience and would come back. The crab cake and crispy rice alone are worth another visit.

According to the restaurant's website, their name comes "from the Hawaiian saying, E Mālama Pono,…read morewhich means to take care of, also until we meet again." Though the staff was gracious and attentive while navigating a small space and a nearly full house, the kitchen still has some things of their own to take care of in order to live up to their full potential. The menu features an interesting and eclectic selection of Asian fusion dishes, and there were far more intriguing items than two of us could try on one visit -- still, nearly everything we ordered was somewhat lacking. We started off strong with drinks: My traditional Mai Tai had a nice flavor without being overly sweet; my wife's Sunset Sangria WAS fairly sweet, but that's how she likes her drinks, and she was very happy. One thing to note: their liquor license has only recently been approved, and their website still says they do not have a full bar -- they'd do themselves a favor by updating the website, as the fun drinks will be a draw. Okay, so drinks were good, but our starter of Garlic Naan with Tzatziki Sauce was disappointing. The bread was really pita, not naan, and there was no presence of garlic whatsoever. Basically, it was warm pita with a touch of salt, so not at all what we were expecting, and not what we would have ordered if we'd known what was coming. Still, the tzatziki sauce was flavorful and fresh. Would have gone well with garlic naan. For an entree, my wife ordered the Horseradish Crusted Mahi Mahi, which is plated with Pineapple Beurre Blanc, Blistered Tomatoes, Roasted Pineapple, Scallion Relish and Shoyu Syrup, and served with a side of white rice. This was a heavily layered dish that was far too sweet for me, but my wife quite liked the flavor. Underneath the many adornments, the fish was fresh and cooked to a very pleasing texture, and I might have enjoyed this in a more savory preparation. My own entree was the Malama Mochiko Chicken: crispy fried thigh meat with a Ponzu Shoyu and Tomato Ginger Sauce. The crispy batter had a pleasing crunch but very little taste; the Ponzu Shoyu had a deep, earthy flavor, but there was just too little of it served on the plate -- there needed to be much more clinging to the chicken, or the batter needed more punch, or both. The other sauce placed to the side, the Tomato Ginger, tasted mostly like a generic sweet chili dipping sauce, and I only used it once. So, yes, the crispy chicken could be great, but really needs a seasoning upgrade. I also ordered a side of the Macaroni Salad, because it's my favorite aspect of a Hawaiian plate lunch. Their version's macaroni was cooked to a spot-on texture, with just the right amount of al dente to hold up to the mayonnaise while still being primarily soft. The salad as a whole had the right creaminess (not too much mayo), but again lacked seasoning. I added some salt, which helped a bit, but it needed something else as well. So, I like the concept of the restaurant and the descriptions of many of the dishes. The creativity and ambition are appealing. But right now, the execution just doesn't bring these ideas to life. Perhaps the chef (described as mostly self-taught) would benefit from consultation with one or two of the many excellent Asian chefs in the city, and I say that without meaning any insult. I'm optimistic they'll goose the flavors if they try, and so to Malama Pono I say, E Malama Pono: until we meet again. PS. Having their valet priced $3 higher than the other restaurants with which they share the service is strange and makes a bad first impression.
