There's something about his place. It appears to be your typical no frills, soup, sandwich, wrap, pita, diner, but there is something uniquely charming about it. I was definitely charmed my first time there. I went in at lunchtime, which was moderately busy. I didn't mind the wait. The person that took my order was a SWEETHEART. She tolerates me while I fumbled looking at the board for my selection, remarked that she knew I was new because she KNOWS MOST REGULARS, and told me about the free item club. I floated over to wait for my food to be prepared. I'd give the quality of the food a solid score too. I look forward to trying other items off the menu. I'd say the breakfast Omelet is about a 3 star but the home fries were delicious. The service was friendly and quick so I bumped the overall to a 4. I needed quick breakfast and was in the area and didn't feel like paying the $20 that was being charged at the hotel. I stopped by Al's and ordered an Omelet combo. The Omelet was ok, did the job but not as good as places like ihop, maybe it's just me that prefers the inside out type of omelet. I also tried to cut a few calories so I didn't get cheese, maybe which would have helped the omelet a little. I just thought it was a little bland and the water from the vegetables leaked into the egg. I did love the home fries; it wasn't too salty but had great seasoning and a crispy outside with a warm soft inside. It came with toast and condiments like butter, jelly, and ketchup. A great deli with awesome employees! I was in Cleveland for business for the first time, and I was looking for a quick place to grab dinner within quick walking distance of my hotel. I found this place right across the street. It was a quick and chilly walk over. The Assistant Manager greeted me upon entering and gave me recommendations. I chose the corned beef reuben. The sandwich was amazing along with my dark roast coffee. The chef even came out to inquire if I was pleased with my food. Al's is a cool lunch/breakfast style deli place in downtown Cleveland. They close at 3pm during the week. What I really like about Al's is the level of customization you can do with your meal. This is in route to the Rock Hall of Fame The staff is very friendly, that's the most important thing right. The food (breakfast) is great, that's the second most important thing right. We came here to grab some grub before seeing the Hall of Fame. The outside looks like a quaint little mom and pops. It's right next to Dublin Donuts, but the outside charm led us here. When we walked in l, we were pretty impressed. It's a really decent sized place. Don't let the outside fool you. The atmosphere is very welcoming, it makes you want to stay and dine in. The huge windows bring plenty of outside light- the upbeat music makes even the most grumpy morning person want to dance. I should know better. I am a New York Jew and pastrami is in my blood. This pastrami was some of the worst I ever had. It was not sliced well and tasted like wood shavings. Manhattan Clam Chowder was extremely salty. In fact, salt was the predominant taste. My friends 'grilled' ham and cheese on Texas Toast. If warming the ham over a Bic lighter is grilled, then it was grilled. Texas Toast was as exciting warmed over French Toast. Can pass on a return visit. read more

The name deli is a little misleading. This is actually hands down the best lunch place in Cleveland. The food is always great, the people who work there are always nice, and the service is fast. Damn I want a burger. Just a burger. Damn I want a burger... That was me this afternoon. So many places in downtown Cleveland are pooty-toot or to say it with a better vocabulary, upscale. Because I was pressed for time, I was a faster but better than McDonald's burger and fries. As I was running in the rain, I saw Al's small but distinguishable neon sign. I entered and overheard a few regulars describing a situation with a lot of F-bombs (Ha!). The woman behind the counter was really sweet; I damn near demanded a burger because it was nowhere on the menu and it's a absurb that a deli not have... She smiled and pointed to the 3rd menu page. "There it is...The 2nd item. Don't worry, everyone who wants a burger does the same thing." I ordered a burger medium and fries. By the time I looked on Facebook to delete friend requests of people I don't know, my food was ready. I bit into the burger and....do you all remember the "hot and juicy" ads from Wendy's? If not, YouTube it. That's how Al's burgers are. I mean, the juice ran down my arm after each bite. The fries were a bit on the greasy side, but were pretty good. Wanna hear something funny? Ordered French fries without salt to go. Simple snack. I received burnt potatoes. And the female owner said they cook them crispy, their fries are hand cut. Apparently they want to close up shop right at 3. The chicken wrap I had was pretty good, with chicken off the grill served with all the fix-ins and ranch. It was served with a side of chips, which consisted of the small bag you can buy in bulk at the grocery. Disappointing. This was my second visit to Al's and there probably won't be a third:-(. It's been a couple of years since my first review and based on recent Yelp reviews, I was looking forward to giving this place another try. I was looking for a quick carry-out lunch between work meetings. I ordered Gina's Vegetarian Combo, which includes falafel, tabbouli, hummus and pita. There was nothing in the combo that I would return for. The best thing about a good falafel is the crunch, warm temperature and depth of flavor. This serving of falafel, had clearly been pre-made, and micro-waved, so the temperature was half warm and half cold, and there was NO crunch, at all. The falafel, had the texture and appearance of a hushpuppy. Tabbouli, should be fresh, nicely chopped with a nice blend of tomato and onion and should have that tart, fresh lemon flavor. This tabbouli, was mushy, no distinct parsley texture. The parsley had been chopped beyond recognition, in a food processor and there was just faint lemon flavor. The hummus had great texture, but was way too salty, I couldn't finish it. Last but not least, the pita, was definitely day-old. I ate maybe a 3rd of my lunch and tossed the rest in the trash. Based on the other Yelp reviews, maybe my mistake is ordering Middle Eastern food from Al's? I'm not sure, but I probably won't return to try any of the other offerings. read more

I just started a new job downtown and was recommended to try Al's for lunch. It was also very cold out today, and Al's was the closest option, so it seemed like the best choices overall. The decor and design is simple and clean. The tables appear to be real wood instead of plastic or aluminum, and the chairs were very comfortable, and it all added a slight rustic touch to what was otherwise a very contemporary layout, which worked very well. We arrived around 11:30, just shortly before the lunch rush. The deli case had several large hunks of fresh meats and cheeses, and the menu had quite a few non-deli options. My two (also new) coworkers got pastrami sandwiches, and I got a chicken shawarma. We were, as a whole, fairly underwhelmed. It was decent, but not ~$10 each decent. It was quick, but not really quick. Overall, if it weren't for the proximity I don't know that I would be back. It's not bad, but a little expensive for the quantity/quality of food. read more

great spot in downtown Cleveland. We were told to come here by the hotel staff at the Wyndham as well as some friends. They were super nice inside and the place got really busy towards lunchtime. They have a lot of options, I will say the burger looked delicious. We got the falafel rollup and the chicken shwarma rollup. Asked the "chef" to chop up the gyro meat for my sandwich as opposed to throwing a clump of meat on top that is unevenly cooked. He refused saying he didn't have the time. It literally would have taken him less time to do it than to complain that he didn't have the time. Terrible customer service. I have been going there for quite some time. I will not be back. Losing a long term customer who often brings others with him because you are too lazy to use your spatula to cut through three pieces of gyro meat...Not sure how you stay in business but certainly not my problem anymore as you will not get one more penny from me. read more

So many places downtown to have lunch. One day I'll have tried them all, but for today I tried Al's. I went in thinking Al's Deli was just that, a deli, but having seen the menu board there is so much more. Many of my favorite Middle Eastern options were listed such as Fattoush, Shawarma, and Shish Tawook. I'll definitely be back to try one of those. But since I was in deli mindset I had to get a sandwich. The Pastrami Sandwich was an excellent choice. It was surprisingly spicy, but just the right amount and came with a choice of cheese; Pepper Jack went well. The Pastrami, apparently house smoked, was served on rye with a pickle and a bag of original potato chips. Through June there are coupons posted online. read more

I work downtown Cleveland so I thought this place was cute and would be a nice idea to treat myself to breakfast every now and then, however they get upset when you ask for utensils and jelly because they want to minimize their use of products and they burn my toast every time I asked them not too. My last attempt was when I went in for breakfast today and ordered potatoes with my breakfast and they gave me old, smelly and burnt potatoes, once I got up to my office and notice I had this burnt food I was upset and called and ask if I could have another order the owner told me I have until 11am to bring them back!
