We arrived around 5:15pm on Monday, July 6th for the World Cup USA game. The game started at 5pm so we arrived shortly after it started. Thankfully there was still parking in the lot and seats inside. I was happily surprised there were still seats available as it was the USA game. The place was busy, but not packed. There were still a few seats at the bar when we arrived and a couple of tables available. It was the perfect place to arrive late to watch the game. This has turned over many times since we've lived here. Now it's a Mexican restaurant and bar. It's cleaned up well since we were here last. It has a very cute entrance. It has a couch and 2 shelving units on the sides of the couch. There is a sign above the couch that says Tequila Weill never break your heart. Veggie Taco Salad $14.75: Fired flour tortilla, pinto beans, grilled vegetables, avocado, sour cream, roasted corn & greens. It was very tasty. We loved the grilled vegetables. They were fresh and hot in the bottom of the taco salad on top of the pinto beans. The sour cream was drizzled on top of the avocados. Under that was a little bit of lettuce. There could have been a lot more lettuce. I would order it again. Mulita $7.55 regular price. $5 during happy hour, we sadly missed happy hour by minutes: stuffed corn tortilla, choice of meat, melted cheese ,with sour cream and guacamole on the side. I don't recall there being guacamole on the side, I think they put it in it. The Mulita was chuck full of meat, it was overflowing. It was very tasty. Though very messy. It's hard to eat with your hands alone. We cut it up into small pieces and ate it with our hands. We'd order it again. The ambiance was good. People were cheering for the USA. Cozy atmosphere with TV for sports. Wasn't expecting a spot like this in West sac but it's a pretty good vibe. Chips and salsa: A- Good kick to the green salsa, the red one has a pretty good flavor. The chips are super crisp and light. It was complimentary and I was pleasantly surprised. Pastor Street taco: B The al pastor wasn't super traditional but it definitely tasted pretty solid. The bit of pineapple adds a nice touch of sweetness. Enchiladas: C Wasn't too impressed. The cheese reminds me of store bought preshredded Mexican cheese blend and the sauce and beans lacked any strong flavor. The chicken was grilled well though. The enchiladas Rojas are delicious. The chips with three salsa choices is great too. The service is good and prompt. They also have a great Bar that has many Tequila and whiskey choices. It's a great local spot to go to and have a good time. They have TVs at the bar and a back small patio that you can bring your pet if you want. read more

We weren't offered waters and we parts of our meals came out before we got our chips and salsa but the server was busy and taking care of multiple tables alone so I didn't complain. Living in California, I feel like we are privileged to have access to many good things - good weather, good landmarks, good food, and something that I have been craving as of late...good margaritas! When a good friend of mine suggested that we meet up to chat and enjoy a few drinks at Altos Cantina, I was delighted to see the many Yelp reviews praising the deliciousness of their margaritas. Although not in close proximity to my home in Elk Grove, I felt like this outing would definitely be worth the 30 minute journey! As we entered the establishment, we were swiftly greeted by Michael, a friendly employee that was behind the bar. I was a bit indecisive regarding my drink of choice, so Michael patiently waited as I weighed my options (they have plenty of them); I eventually opted for the Blackberry Margarita. As my friend and I chatted, Michael did a great job of checking in on us (we were only drinking, not eating) and brought us chips and salsa to snack on. Although the taste of alcohol was subtle (which I prefer), I found myself quite buzzed after finishing my first round. For the second round, I opted for the passion fruit margarita. While waiting for our drinks, another friendly employee (unfortunately I did not obtain her name) brought us waters. The passion fruit margarita was as subtle as the previous drink and flavorful. However, I did not find it as delicious as the blackberry margarita (my humble opinion). If you're looking for superb customer service paired with a good margarita or two, I highly recommend visiting Altos Cantina. The service we had today was absolutely terrible. We come here often and it's usually fantastic, but there must have been a recent change in staff. Our server had no idea what a "house margarita" was, got our order wrong multiple times, and also charged us for full price not the happy hour prices. I asked about the prices after we saw the receipt, and she quite literally didn't even know their own happy hour. They rechecked everything and said the margaritas and beers were correctly priced but not according to the menus, so almost felt like either they couldn't do basic math or they were blatantly lying to my face. Not only did I lose at least $20 but also the service was very poor. We all ordered different drinks & all equally enjoyed them. Personally recommend a strawberry cucumber margarita, but their mangonada looked so refreshing! The other girls ordered burrito bowls, they were a good size. I ordered their asada torta & uhm yum! They melted the cheese into the bread before adding the produce, which i loved! It was so delicious and also a good size, I could only finish 1/2. When I first walked in I got great and friendly vibes from the place and staff. The staff are friendly and attentive. They have a wide variety of different mexican cuisine and lots of different drinks as well. Regular visitor here, this was not our first bad experience but the first unacceptable experience and it was specifically the bartender 3/25. They only had turned/old lime juice so instead of juicing, they only allowed beverages without lime. We ordered two carajillos; only one came out, it didn't have espresso, and it arrived after we finished entrees. We canceled the second and didn't drink the first because it was poorly made, told them to leave it on the bill since we were ready to go and didn't want to inconvenience the server. Bar service was slow and disorganized, felt bad for the server dealing with the bartender serving only 8 or so other guest in the restaurant. I'm in the service industry myself and rarely leave reviews. Warning that service and quality is very inconsistent here depending on staff. Will not visit again unfortunately. read more

I went to this restaurant because it looked like such a vibe. I can confirm it is! The place itself is small, clean and friendly. I had their shrimp cocktail bowl and it was delicious. It was sweet, spicy and hearty. Shrimp was cooked perfectly and they were a great size. My husband had their carnitas plate and it was also very delicious. The meat was flavorful, crispy, and seasoned nicely. I also liked their Jamaica water, it was perfectly tart and semi sweet. We went over their cocktail menu it all sounded really great. We are definitely going back again to have cocktails with a new dish. The only downside was our waitress. She was not attentive she forgot to come back to our table with refills and such. She asked me if I wanted crackers or chips for my shrimp cocktail and I chose crackers. I never got them, but my dish was pretty great without them. She noticed she never brought them and said she "forgot about me and my crackers." There was a good number of patrons, but only a few tables were being served and helped. I'm not too sure how we would have been missed. There were a lot of staff members too. Nonetheless you should try this place out! It's a good spot! read more

WHERE DO ALL THE LOCALS GO? 5th Star for the great tequila selection as we decided on Mexican because our dinner was on National Margarita Day. Those who know me will be saying "That Terry.... Any Excuse for a good adult beverage". And you know what? They are correct. Here is my story: Altos Cantina was selected as it was in good proximity to our hotel and convenient enough for the Sacto folk joining us. Altos is a local establishment; parking plentiful and atmosphere friendly and comfortable. They also have patio dining which would be great in the spring and summer. Service is excellent from the moment you walk in to the Establishment. Now about the food. Be careful not to over order as portions are HUGE. Guacamole made fresh on each order. Tortilla chips are also home made. Be sure to try the double fried french fries nachos. A definite repeat for me next time I'm there. read more

I recently stopped by here with a friend from Yelp, and thought it was alright-- not bad, but also not great. I had texted him, "I'm downtown and hungry." "I've been here a few times." "How good is it?" "It's okay." I ordered the $8 Happy Hour nachos with chicken, while he ordered a vodka soda with several tacos. The ambiance, service, and presentation were all fantastic. While the cantina had looked kind of dingy on the outside, it was shining on the inside. I loved the setup and the decor. Our server was very friendly, and, besides doing a great job waiting on us, also made a little bit of conversation with us. She was so friendly that I remember thinking something like, "I'm going to feel bad giving them less than five stars..." The food looked really good, and the portions were very generous, especially considering the happy hour pricing. It just tasted kind of... plain. It was lacking in flavor. It was missing that je ne sais quoi. Another reviewer mentioned house made chips, but these chips did not seem house made to me. They tasted like they came out of one of those giant bags of chips from the kitchen at summer camp. It all just tasted kind of pre-prepared to me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. The portions were huge, but the flavor was not my personal favorite. My friend's food actually looked a lot better than mine, but I didn't try any of his, due to my distaste for seafood.
