Amarin is a solid dinner option on Castro Street that usually pleases everyone, making it a great place to go with a group of friends. First of all, the dining room(s!) are huge, so it makes it easy to get seated fairly quickly, if not immediately. The general atmosphere is nice, but not super fancy, so makes it a great casual spot. The vegetarian menu is huge, which I think is awesome! Thai food is always pretty decent for vegetarians in terms of options, but all of the choices here just make it even better. Of course, I'm still pretty basic and usually get Pad Thai anyway, but every once in a while I like having so many options to branch out to. I can't say I'm a total expert at pinpointing what makes Thai food good or authentic, but I think the food here is good. Might not be the best ever, but I always have left satisfied. This place is usually very busy for dinner, so you gotta make sure you make a reservation, especially if you have a large group. They have "floor" sitting that feels a little like Japanese restaurants, and it makes group dinners very cosy :) For small group meetups, I usually like to arrange dinner here. It is a little noisy, but not too noisy that you have to shout to hear each other. There is a large selection on the menu which usually leaves me spoilt for choice. Lunch time is happy time! Papaya salad: Crisp and has a little, spicy kick to it. Kinda small but considering the entrees are super filling, it's fine. Samosas: Okay, not the big honking Indian samosas I was thinking of, so size-wise they didn't meet my expectations, but they came out piping out (like burn-your-mouth hot) and crispy so at least I knew they weren't pre-fried and just sitting out. Complimentary small soup: Surprisingly flavorful and I couldn't detect any MSG. I LOVED my papaya pad thai. It was not greasy at all compared to regular pad thai. For those who prefer food non spicy, this will be good since it wasn't spicy at all. The portion size was great because I can eat a lot/was hungry but I had to pack a bit of my leftovers to go. Mango sticky rice for dessert: Tasted even better than it looked. Highly recommend! I really wanted to sit one of those tables where you take off your shoes and you're sitting on the ground, but our group was too big and got seated a table instead because we didn't want to be split up. I'd go back and try it, but TBH, the service was kind of lacking and the food was mediocre. We got a round of roti to share and it was just okay. It didn't have a really strong curry and spices flavor which I like and the roti was really thick as well. It's suppose to be thin and light and it was thick and heavy. For my meal, I got the Pad See Eu and it was definitely lacking in flavor. I asked for medium spicy and it wasn't there. I had to add more chili on there otherwise it was pretty bland. I had ordered a fresh coconut too and keep checking to see where it was as drinks are usually the first things handed out. It was halfway through the meal before they told me they didn't have any more -_-. Overall, the service was lacking and the food was mediocre. I really like this place! The food is good, prices are reasonable, and location is great. We love coming here for a Thai food fix in a slightly more formal setting. It's still casual - but it's not a primarily takeout restaurant (like some Thai food places are). Love the yellow curry with brown rice, roti (must order!), and pad see ewe. Really everything I've had here has been fantastic (aside from cocktails - don't order those here even though they have a bar). We've been here twice and both times the food has been disappointing. We only went the second time because my daughter wanted to sit at one of their sunken tables (where the table surface is at floor height) When we asked whether we could sit at one of the tables, the waitress rather brusquely told us that it was only for larger groups, turning away before we could ask her anything else. The food took a long time to arrive and was not particularly flavorful. They did not provide a plastic bag to take away left overs. Read, read and look at your bill carefully. The mini prints on manual" 5 more guesses charge 18% service charge"! I believe service should be included with meal. And tip is custom discretion. We had lunch for $65.42. The food and customer service were not high quality but expensive. On the bill was initially $11.78 service charged on. The tricky part was when the final bill came it showed base charge was $84.15. They asked TIP again. If you don't look your final bill carefully you will be cheated. And if you confront with them they will become defensive, angry and nasty. I wonder what they did was legal or not. It will be interesting to find out. read more

Amarin, more like Damn-a-rin...as in damn, I've been frequenting this Thai restaurant for 7 years now--wow, that makes me feel old. Located on Castro Street in downtown Mountain View, Amarin is the most popular Thai restaurant in the area and has a loyal patronage that keeps the place always bustling. The interior is quite nice--a mix of classy American and traditional Thai decor. It's bigger than it seems from the outside...I've never had a problem getting seated! Also, if you have enough people, you can even sit in the traditional floor seating that you see on the left when you first enter the restaurant. What I Order: -Pad Thai (3/5): Chicken pad thai all day, everyday. This is my go-to order at a Thai restaurant (one time I actually ate Pad Thai for lunch, dinner, and then lunch again the next day LOL). I used to think this was really good pad thai, but over the years, it's either gotten a little bit lackluster or my palate has become more refined. I recently tried Amarin again this summer and was a little bit disappointed--the portion isn't what I remember and the quality has dipped a little bit. It's still pretty good and will do in a pinch, but there are better Thai places out there! My friend also had their pad thai, and agreed with me on all counts. If you're craving really really good Pad Thai, go to Shana Thai down the road a little ways past Castro. Service is fine, albeit a little bit slow. The servers aren't too personable, but not openly cold. Our food came out decently fast! All in all, Amarin is an alright choice for Thai food, but you could do better! The noodles were $11 and the portion was filling. It tasted pretty average, although note that if you like spicy food you should ask for the spice level to be raised. The dish came with 2 slices of tomatoes. I personally would have preferred some green vegetables mixed in over having the tomatoes on the side. Other than that, nothing to complain about. She then apologized and got us both iced tea on the house. Our orders were brought to us in less than 10 minutes. The Pad Kee Mao was spicy! Maybe they observed different spice levels here? There were two other tables that came in after us but they got their food first, so I asked the server when our food is ready. So, the food came and there was no apology whatsoever. I commented that the meat was dried and was more well done than an usual steak. The manager then argued back that the meat still looked a little pink to him, and because his previous customers usually returned the steak and asked to cook more thoroughly so that's why they made it like that. Once again, no apology whatsoever or assure customer to do it better next time. After 10 minutes, he came back one more time and asked if everything was ok. He stated that everything should be ok now since we already ate the steak and said that there's no way to make a new dish for us???? Like what a behavior is that!? We never asked for new dish and he should suggest it on the first time, not on the second time to mock the customers like that. A friend I was eating with told me she had come here the other night and portions were very small and the two entrees she got - pad Thai and green curry - were not enough for the both of them and were too expensive for the amount they received. My party ordered the roti, pad thai, exotic green beef curry, a soup, and another chicken curry. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of food that entailed because I expected there to not be enough for my table. I thoroughly enjoyed their pad Thai but the rest of the dishes were not great. Curry was a bit watery and didn't have great flavor, beef was tough, and eggplants were also not cooked through. The roti peanut sauce also had an odd flavor and was almost too sweet, not complimenting the deep fried roti well.
