We decided to come here as we were craving Thai. When we arrived I hadn't noticed that the restaurant does a lunch and dinner setting but we were informed shortly after. I will start by saying we were seated in a timely manner and we placed a descent order of two appetizers (jalapeno calamari and veggie egg rolls) and two main dishes (pumpkin curry with prawns and basil chicken plus a soup) I noticed something was wrong when the main dishes came before the appetizers. After all the food was delivered they stated we are closing soon. (we arrived at 2:15pm food came around 2:30pm Sunday) Appetizers: Calamari was chewy and felt like it had been sitting their. Egg rolls were descent and the soup was luke to almost cold About 15 min into the eating this lady drops the bill off and says it needs to be closed out. She walks by about 3-4 times staring so at this point the meal wasn't enjoyable we put are cards down. She proceeds to tell us do you need boxes AKA its time to get out. We still had 30-40 min left before the restaurant closes so it was quiet rude at this point. I sign the check while my friend is eating for a quick sec then the lady comes back grabs the check before it was fully signed. I get you have a time constraint but I think if its not well shown or close to the time the server could have shared that. But to kick people out well before closing is certainly not acceptable. The only reason for two stars is because the main dishes were amazing. Would I come back probably not as I felt the service lacked majorly. read more

We had excellent service and very good Thai food at our dinner here. Servers were attentive and provided explanations politely. Basil beef had just the right amount of bite for me and my son, but was a little too hot for his wife. We had not specified heat level, so I figure it was medium. Panang curry with shrimp was delicious--plenty of firm shrimp, red and green peppers, and smooth, creamy sauce. Pad Thai was so good we ordered two, and ate every bite of both of them. We use to eat here all the time... in fact, this was the only Thai place we liked in the bay area. But recently the quality has deteriorated. We are vegetarians and have ordered only the red curry and the yellow curry for almost 10 year.... I KNOW... boring. But because of that we can really tell the quality change. Otis was wonderful and he always made sure his customers are happy with food and service. I am not sure if he is still around... may be that is why the quality is gone.... but I am not sure. We stopped in for lunch on our day off as we like to try new and interesting places we've never been to before. After coming to downtown for the post office, we found a parking spot on Castro and aimlessly walked around trying to decide where to eat...this place looked okay, and we had not had Thai in a few months. We ordered the Thai coffee, the samosas appetizer, and 2 different lunches, the mango chicken for me, and the shrimp Pad Thai for the husband. The Thai coffee had an odd flavor profile that for the life of me I could not figure out what that flavor was. It was not bad per se, it just tasted odd. Not sure I would order this again. The samosas where nice. The mango chicken was ok, the mango chunks tasted funny to me, nothing like mango usually tastes. The food quantity was overall pretty filling. I tasted the pad thai and did not like that, but my husband liked it ok. Would I come back again? Probably not. But I don't think it's the restaurants fault, mostly I think I am not that into Thai food. read more

Extremely rude staff, especially the person at the front desk. Literally forced us to pay for the bill while we were still eating. Couldn't even wait for few mins and without even asking if we need more food bill was kept on the table. It uses to be my go-to place when we use to live in mountain view but unfortunately last visited had to be last. I've been to loads of Thai places during my time on the east-coast and absolutely love the cuisine. I really wanted to like this place due to it's prime location and good-natured staff but disappointed that the food let us down. Amongst the food, we ordered the Roti, Thai Samosa, Fried Rice along with Panang Curry. There was oil dripping from the samosa [literally] and while the Roti tasted good, I couldn't just ignore the amount of grease. Again, not all places have the luxury of training their staff to be friendly and customer centric and unintentional lapses can sometimes come off as "rude". I felt that the staff in this case was kind and had great intentions but somehow lacked the tools to run a place like this at a prime location like Downtown Mountain View. A simple example would be when we asked for a to-go box, we were handed a plastic box that just wouldn't close and needed a server to help us out. I had noticed how crowded this place was on one of my many visits to Castro Street. I visited this place on a weekend around half past 7 pm and got immediately seated. Half a star just for the fact that they have a separate vegetarian section on the menu! Made my work so much easier than the usual of replacing this and that in the menu. We ordered- 1. Tom kha soup - we had ordered a small one and so it came in a shallow plate/bowl which made it a little cold but the taste was amazing! 2. Spicy corn cake- was fantastic and crispy and fresh! I recommend pouring the peanut cucumber sauce that comes along with it-Superb! I can still feel the taste lingering. Was not at all spicy like the name which is good as you can always adjust your spice levels and let the server know 3. Golden bag- crisp and delicious! Accompanying Plum sauce was fantastic too. We didn't try the main course as I wanted to try the classic dessert of MANGO WITH STICKY RICE. I was not at all disappointed with the taste. This was my first time trying this dessert and was apprehensive about the combination. But I was absolutely thrilled with the taste. They'd presented it well too. Went there on a Thursday evening at 5:00 with my girlfriend. We picked seats outside in the street under some nice shady trees. Covid seating. We ordered the Mango Salad and Pad See Ew. My girlfriend said she wasn't to hungry but as soon as she tasted the Mango Salad it was ON..! It was a perfect blend of sweet and sour plus some chili pepper spice.!! We were here for a reunion. The place is spacious and it's nice that they have some large tables for large groups. However, while the food was a 4-star, the service was not good, -1 star. I ordered the Pineapple fried rice, it came with curry over shrimp in a half pineapple (there are pineapple chunks inside). It was pretty heavy but not bad. I also tried my friend's lamb curry, and the meat was quite tender. But I would hesitate to come here again since the service was pretty grumpy. They were trying to rush our dining, keep asking us if we are done with our meals, even if there was, like half left. And there is even no people waiting outside, with tons of empty tables, really not sure why they don't want people to be in their restaurant... and when they serve water, they drop some water on my friend's clothes, without apologizing. Same thing happens when they were taking away my empty plate. They were holding 3-4 plates and were pretty rude that some sauce dropped on my coat. they didn't say anything either, even if I already turned around to try separating the my coat from the plates. They didn't tell us the tip was included, on the receipt there is still place to add tips. Also if you already suffered from parking to dine in downtown mountain view, I think you deserve better service and better meal. read more

I'm surprised the ratings are low for this place. It was exactly what I expected. The venue is pretty but not necessarily upscale, the service is not very American style and a little confusing because they sometimes are very helpful and sometimes seem disinterested lol, but the people are nice and the food is great. They have a whole vegan menu that is robust and has many different options. The panang curry is delicious and doesn't have added sugar. The crispy rolls and fresh rolls are truly magnificent. We were seated quickly and the tables were situated properly with Covid-19 regulations. You can scan the menu with a digital scan on your phone from the table. Service was quick and friendly. I really enjoyed visiting this place due to the authentic Thai food they served and always offered a good service. My recent experience here was very very disappointing. We ordered the chefs special curry chicken which was extremely disapponting- not sure what was special about the dish. It had an overpowering smell of lemon grass with no flavors. Chicken coconut soup came with more veggies than chicken. The chicken pieces were too chewy to eat. Pad kee mao (drunken noodles) had undercooked noodles. Also the server did not really care when I told him about the undercooked noodles. Very disappointed by the food. Never going back again. read more

I was surprised to see the three star reviews because I have had nothing but positive experiences coming here. On my last visit, I finally realized why this place has so few stars. This negative review is based on their dishonest tipping practices. I am writing this so other patrons can watch out. I came here with a larger party and saw on their menu that they automatically add a 18% tip to parties of 5 or more. I am always okay with this since I normally tip 20% anyway! After a great dinner, I had totally forgotten and the check came out to be higher than I expected. I thought this was weird and checked the receipt breakdown, but they did not include any breakdown. You could not see the individual dishes, the tax, and most importantly, they hid the automatic tip. The only thing on the check was a single number and suggested tip amounts. This is obviously done to "suggest" that you tip twice (i.e. trick forgetful customers in large parties into tipping again). Food wise, I like their curries. read more

My coworker and I stopped for some lunch and had a not so pleasant experience. The waiters were in a rush the whole time as if they were walking down the speedway. Every time we asked for something such as chili paste or a fork, they said "ok" and never brought it to us. 3 different waiters did this to us. If you want consistently fresh and delicious Thai food with quick, pretty good service, Amarin delivers! Menu: The menu here is huge and, even more importantly, vegetarian friendly. If you can't find something from soups to salads and noodles to stir fries, then you aren't even trying! Food: I have never been unhappy with a dish at Amarin...hard to believe from a picky eater like myself. I ordered one of the vegetarian soups which was flavorful and packed to the brim with kabocha squash (wooo), extra mushrooms (double woo), baby corn, and spinach. Dipping sauces are always sweet and food isn't oversauced or too greasy like many restaurants. From tofu to pad thai, the food is simply good. Dietary Restrictions/Substitutions: Yet another reason Amarin is a great place for a large party or even one picky eater. They are great about honoring any special requests from extra veggies to dish swaps. They are also great about putting sauces on the side. Setting: There are multiple rooms and you can also sit outside. It can get busy, but the wait is usually minimal as the service is expedient. It can be a tiny bit noisy at times, but not exorbitant. Attention Shoppers! Avoid the Crispy Soft Shell Crab House's Special!!! I'm writing this public announcement at 2am, sitting on the toilet bowl my guts wrenched in pain. No need for a picture. No need for a thousand words. I'll let you fill in the blanks while I grab a new roll of paper. The first responsibility of a restaurateur is not to poison the patrons, so 1 star (too bad because I really liked the place until...) --- 3:30pm update: Now reporting live from the E.R. at Kaiser Santa Clara. My girlfriend drove me to the doctor but the pain was so sharp that I collapsed in convulsions and cold sweats just out of the doctor's office. They rushed me to the ER where I was kept all day under hydration IV and morphine. So far the Crispy Soft Shell Crab cost me $20 of doctor copay and $100 of E.R. (not to mention the meal itself). I'll contact the restaurant to get my money back and I'll report back here as soon as I can. --- Day 3 update: I can finally get out of bed. I'm a tall skinny dude (5'10", 140lbs) but I somehow lost more than 12 pounds since the beginning of my ordeal. The doctor said words like "viral infection" and "fecal-to-oral route". Thanks, Amarin! At least, I'm not the only one who suffered from severe food poisoning after eating there. Being crowned "King of FOBenese Food" can be a bit of a burden, and there's quite a bit of pressure considering FOB food goes beyond Chinese and Japanese cuisine :-o. So time to stretch out the wings a bit and venture in other FOB arenas. Bushido Izakaya looked pretty empty around 9 pm last night after watching Man O' Steel, and Amarin still looked very busy. So in we went. It's a good thing there are no lunch combo plates during dinner (or high tech slaves from other companies around)...there's only so much dumbed down generic remixing I can tolerate. It's a general rule of thumb that to really test out an Asian restaurant (non fusion), you get several plates and sample whatever you can. Granted there will be hits and misses, as the possibility of the chefs nailing down over 85% of the menu provided that one does not order the crap is very very very rare (e.g. Cooking Papa, Yum's Bistro). By the way, how does one say "moo shoo poo poo doo doo" in Thai? So without setting any expectations (even though a local fave, Shana Thai is down the street), we just went with what looked interesting. Brown Rice - the safer less guilt carb choice. Veggie Meatloaf - Lentils, bread crumbs, soy protein, pea, carrot, galingale, kefir, garlic, onion & curry. Served with grilled eggplant, zucchini, bell pepper, sweet basil, and red curry sauce. Really tasted like meatloaf, and had that signature texture (that I hated as a kid), but this veggie version was nicely done. Good balance of flavors and textures. Roasted duck - Spicy Sweet Basil: with asparagus, carrot, pepper, onion, garlic and hot pepper. Haven't had roast duck in a Thai restaurant that had more meat than fat in a while. Doesn't matter if they made it in house or outsourced it, but it worked. Hoa Moke Fish - Cod, cabbage, sweet basil, egg, coconut milk with red curry sauce. Surprisingly tasty. A scoop of fish, a bite of roast duck, the veggies from the meatloaf, and brown rice smothered with curry sauce all over by yourself = Remix Heaven Earthy Thai iced tea, just a tad bit sweet, but after stirring it was alright. Not quite my style, but again it's MV, can't complain. I'd give the nod to Shana Thai being a slight notch better, but Amarin's not bad either. 3.70. King Of FOBenese Food recommends! read more

Sad to see that a lot of Yelp reviews indicate terrible experiences here. I've had nothing but consistently good food. Service here isn't the greatest, but pretty commendable considering how packed the place gets. NOODLES: I do agree that the Pad Thai here is pretty standard, nothing special. But if you want a noodle dish, try the Pad See-Ew. It has a darker, deeper flavor, and most people are surprised by how much tastier it is. MEAT: Honey beef / honey pork. 'Nuff said. VEGETARIAN: (Disclaimer: I am a meat lover by ALL means. But I came here with my vegetarian friends and was surprised to discover that everything on the vegi menu was insanely delicious.) - Thai Samosa - Crispy Tofu Ball - Roti - my vegetarian friends were Indian and recommended this dish, so you know it was good! - Panang Curry with Tofu DESSERT: Get the Mango with Sticky Rice or the Fried Banana with coconut ice cream. Even better is getting BOTH, so you can share with the group. TIP: This is a great place for a group, as it is perfect for "family style" dining -- where you get a ton of dishes to share, so you can sample a bit of everything. I keep using it for a long time whenever I want a good Thai-styled meal in the area; it had never disappointed me. Food is good, service efficient, indoor seating is nice, outdoor - like the other ones on Castro - is on the street. Amazing, amazing food. I was so excited to find that they had a separate vegetarian menu, with two full pages of unbelievable-sounding entrees. I decided I wanted the Panang Curry, a red curry based on coconut milk with tofu, broccoli, zucchini, carrots, bell peppers, and peas. It was so amazing: rich, and just spicy enough, with perfectly still-slightly-crisp vegetables that absorbed the sauce entirely. I've been having a curry craving the past few days, but now that I know curry like that is just around the corner, I can't imagine not having a perpetual curry craving. And it was so pretty! The service could have been better... Our waiter never asked what level of spice I wanted in my dish, the food was a little slow to come out, our water wasn't refilled frequently-- and when it was, it was sometimes warm. But the value was good; most vegetarian entrees ran between $9 and $13. Anticipate at least twenty updates on this review... I want to try everything on the menu. read more

Delicious Thai food right in the heart of downtown Mountain View. The location is beautiful. They even have traditional Thai seating here. Food is not bad but I've had better. Got the shrimp curry and fried rice, both came inside pineapples! Pretty! However, flavor was really lacking.The rice was so plain that I had to ask for chili sauce, and the curry was not spicy whatsoever. The honey beef really only had honey in the sauce. The Bangkok chicken was pretty good. That was a unique dish. There was a good 20 minute wait for our meal to come out but they were very attentive in refilling water the whole time. (mountain view + Thai food) This place wasn't super crowded around 1:30 PM on Sunday but definitely can be busy during lunch peak (12:00 - 1:00 PM both weekend/weekday). I ordered a spicy beef and eggplant and my boyfriend got a Pad Thai (typical and popular Thai food). Pad Thai was actually really good for me (I am a super picky eater) since it wasn't spicy at all - tasty! Spicy beef and eggplant was not bad but not spicy all! (it was a little sweeter than expected). I would probably order Pad Thai next time (which was really good and tasty) - if you like spicy Pad Thai, probably ask for spicy sauce :) read more

After meeting for coffee with a friend on Castro street in Mountain View we decided to get dinner before heading home. Amarin looked interesting and not as crowded as other places. The interior is simple but still classy enough to be a proper restaurant. We ordered chicken curry and spicy pan fried noodles. The mixup with the curry (they initially brought chicken tofu) was solved without any issues and very fast. I'm not blaming them for the mistake. My spicy pan fried noodles where over cooked but surprisingly spicy. The staff was as friendly as I expect them to be in a large place like this. The food was good enough, but nothing to write home about. If your on Castro and crave for Thai food - go for it. If you're open for other food, this area has better options. One plus: they offered to pack the food we asked to take home. In most places they just give you containers and leave you to do it yourself. read more
