I went to this place on a weekend evening with my friends. Even though it was a weekend plus Castro street, we found a table quickly. The restaurant is divided into two separate areas, the smaller one has traditional thai seating and the other bigger one has general tables and chairs. We were not allowed to sit on the cultural thai style sofas because we were a smaller party. We started with the following appetizers: 1) CHILI CRUSTED SHITAKE MUSHROOMS Fried shitakes mushroom, cashew nut, onion, jalapeno and served with spicy dipping sauce. It was okay to taste. 2) GOLDEN BAG Stuffed bag with marinated soy protein, corn, pea, carrot then fried served with plum sauce. It was average to taste. 3) GREEN CURRY Eggplant /or/ bamboo shoot, bell pepper, sweet basil and coconut milk. It was average to taste. 4) PANANG CURRY Broccoli, zucchini, carrot, bell pepper, sweet basil and coconut milk. The best of the lot. It was superb to taste. 5) SPICY BASIL FRIED RICE Spicy Basil : with tofu, broccoli, baby corn, carrot, garlic, chili and sweet basil. It was a super spicy dish which was very tasty as well. Curries are not served with an extra bowl of white or brown rice so you need to order it separately for an extra charge. We ended the dinner with the conventional Thai Ice Tea. SINGHA beer is must try here. Overall, the place was decent but I would be honest when I say that I have eaten much better Thai food in the bay area. read more

Been here (Castro Street) few times and love the taste and service with colleagues during lunch time mostly. Recent visit tried their flat seating which is comfortable and fun for 9 of us for intimate seating. Service was prompt and very friendly - just FYI - folks sitting by steps would have to help pass the dishes onto the table. There is ample space surrounding you if you need to keep your dishes or drinks to your side if the table gets filled with dishes (since we were 9...we had quite a few dishes ordered). read more

My family and I came here one weekend because our go-to Thai place was closed due to a power outage. This was the closest Thai restaurant and we had been meaning to check it out. We ordered the following: - Pad See Ew - Tasted like slightly flavored noodles. I've had better at most other places. - Green Curry with Chicken - A disappointment. It didn't come with the mix of vegetables I see at other restaurants, and the flavor was much too muted for a curry. - Roti - Nothing special. I haven't had Thai roti I like yet... still prefer it at Malaysian restaurants. At least the restaurant is fairly large and was able to accommodate us quickly. How does this place get 3 stars? Took my wife here recently, having good memories of the food here back when I was working in Mountain View, and it did not disappoint. The pad thai was great, excellent mix of sweet and sour and savory from peanut and tamarind. My wife loves pad thai - when it's made well, that is - and has been thoroughly unimpressed by every single bay area Thai place she's been to so far until we came here, where at last she found a place that comes close to the actual good pad thai she's had. I, in the meantime, got a massaman curry which was also extremely flavorful and had me alternating between gulping down bites of it and gulping down ice water due to it having a little more kick than I'm used to. Per memory, the spring roll sampler is an excellent choice (roast duck for the win), and the lamb shank was also good. One final pro-tip: the penang curry on ginger-fried rice is phenomenal. We were really excited to try out Thai food on Castro street especially since the weather was nice and we could sit outdoors. There were 6 of us with a new born baby. Once we got to the restaurant we were told we could not be seated outside unless there were 8 of us. The owner/manager was very rude and waved us inside as if we were little school kids. In hindsight we should have walked away right then because the night only got worse. Once inside the crowded restaurant the server popped up right away and kept asking us for our order. We had not even had a chance to pull up the menu. It was really overwhelming especially with a new born in tow. Once we were ordering we asked the server if she has any recommendations when we were told that we were giving her a headache or that only one person should speak. The restaurant was so loud we could barely hear her. When a friend noticed what our server had said she asked for a different server. Again as a new mom I'm really unhappy I was told I could not sit outside. Not to mention our drinks were late and the plates had crumbs on them. This was my first and last time here. Out of all the places on Castro I could have gone to for lunch on a friday, I chose to walk into Amarin. This, based on the, "Best of Mountain View," sign out front. It was early, so I was happily seated right away. I ordered a diet pepsi and the green curry with chicken. Order came with a tasty simple soup as a starter. Yum. For a restaurant that has been, "Winning best Thai restaurant every year since 1999" (Mountain View Voice), I didn't particularly find my meal anything to write home about. Nothing about the taste or presentation really differentiated it much from other Thai places in the area. Furthermore, nothing about the dining experience was particularly ahead of the competition. After your order comes out, forget about your waiter checking in on you. My drink needed to be refilled, and I could not find anyone to do it. Check was plopped on the table without so much as a, "Is there anything else I can get for you, sir? Dessert, perhaps? A refill?" It's clear their aim is to maximize throughput, and I get that. In the end, I really don't feel like there's an incentive to come back with all of the other restaurants on Castro. I would have loved dessert, but since I wasn't asked, Paris Baguette got that extra ten bucks instead. read more

For thai food, I thought prices were decent ($10 for lunch), and our meals also came with soup. I went with a medium spicy level, and it wasn't overwhelming, but had just enough kick to make it interesting. The place seemed quite clean, and I'm surprised this place doesn't have better reviews. The pad kee mao was colorful enough, flavorful, and spicy, just what you'd expect from the dish. I can also appreciate that they added some tomatoes to break up the heat. Yum! read more

I've been here a number of times over the years. While the food has never been stellar, it was not complaint-worthy. My lunchtime visit with my mom last Friday completely spoiled my neutral opinion of this place - disappointing dishes, unaccomodating service. I wanted to try something new, so I inquired about the Pan Fried Bean Thread Noodles, Chicken & Veggie with Special Sauce. Instead of a clear explanation, I was told it was "duh bean noodow wi duh reh saw". Whatever. My desperate piehole was excited for some warm special sauce. When the dish arrived, not only did the "bean thread noodles" turn out to be rice vermicelli, but the sauce was a questionable orangey-red liquid that tasted strangely sour and faintly spicy. The chicken also seemed out of place with the soupy mess, deeming the entire mixture a complete failure. My mom's Pad Thai was soggy and weird. When she asked if it was made differently than usual, the server tried to convince her she was confusing Pad Thai with Pad See-Ew instead of trying to find out the problem. My mom hated her dish so much she would not stop complaining like a broken record. You know when women get older they just bitch and bitch. Maybe it's because there were so many people seated outside for this restaurant (and the thai restaurant next to it was close to deserted) Maybe it's because I was just really hungry and just wanted to feed my stomach, not really go for quality. Whatever it is, this place hit the spot. The decor makes me feel like I'm in some temple but that's not the point for coming here. First of all, all Thai places I've been to has been pretty cheap; this place is no different. We ordered the Honey Pork, Pad See Ew and Fresh Roll with Duck. The Honey Pork is DELICIOUS (or the sauce is) so I'm definitely a fan of this now. It's slightly sweet and comes in a separate saucer so you can put as much or as little as you want. The Fresh Rolls with duck was surprisingly good. Since it's not as common, I always forget how tasty duck is and this place made it pretty well. The sauce comes with hoisen (?) sauce topped with wasabi sauce. If you're like me, just push away all the wasabi stuff and you're good to go. The Pad See Ew is good but it's just like every other Thai restaurant. Of all my Yelp buddies Gur E. is the one I most often agree with. When I saw his review of this place...I was kind of nervous that we were meeting people there. Well, his review is more than 1.5 years old and places often have off nights so I tried to take courage. When we got there (it was a Tuesday night) it was the one crowded venue on a street full of deserted or nearly so restaurants which gave me hope. The wait staff wasn't exactly rude...they were just inattentive. Usually by the time I've finished my water and my husband's water somebody comes to refill our glasses, but that wasn't happening here. The menu was inspiring, but the food itself was hopelessly bland. If you feel like there are no spices in your food at a Thai restaurant there is something wrong. We ordered the Tofu & Bean Thread Noodle Soup which sounded great but was kind of like veggies and noodles in salt water. We also ordered the Fresh Spring Rolls which were just kind of weird and the Eggplant Sizzling With Green Curry which was not sizzling in temperature or spice. It was, however, green. Honestly, I probably would've given it two stars if it were cheaper and it might be the type of place I'd take my parents who don't care for spicy food and like well decorated restaurants. Generic, Americanized, bland food however is just not worth that much money to me. The highlight of my evening was my Gnarly Head Cabernet Sauvignon which I probably wouldn't have found otherwise. Horrible experience. The place was crowded when we got there, and the place is huge. 100 tables maybe. We didn't wait too long to be seated though. We ordered: vegetarian Mus-sa-nun curry (coconut milk, potatoes, pineapples, carrots, onions, peanuts, and tofu) scallops and green curry catfish All of the dishes were terrible. Even the jasmine rice left more to be desired. We ordered two sides of rice, and they were not fully cooked. How can a restaurant mess up on rice? Ugh! That was the least of our problems though... The mus-sa-nun curry, which was arguably the best out of all three (that's not saying much), was tiny and rice was not included. I felt cheated and didn't get enough fillings in the curry. The scallops and green curry were terrible. The scallops were tasteless, undercooked, only came with 5 scallops, and were probably frozen beforehand. The green curry also lacked flavour. There were also canned peas in this dish, which did NOT make us happy. Not to mention this dish was about $15. Complete rip-off. The catfish was the most awful dish we tried. It was DRY, NOT FRESH, most likely FROZEN beforehand, and tasted NASTY. Plus the portion was tiny! That tiny thing was $17 and it was AWFUL! The waitress never came to check on us or refill our water until we were ready to pay. The place was really busy, but at least come and check on us while we are eating, NOT UNTIL WE ARE ABOUT TO LEAVE. Terrible service. No tip for them. Amarin is the worst Thai food I have ever had. The portions are TINY, the dishes are EXPENSIVE, service is highly lacking, and the food is FUCKING AWFUL. Do not come here expecting a wonderful dining experience. read more

If I had one word to describe Amarin Thai, it would be "bustling." If I had a whole phrase, I would say: "large, attractive, busy Thai food spot with indoor and outdoor seating." For good measure, I might add "prime Castro Street people watching" I have probably been to Amarin Thai at least 20 times in the last 5 years. That's because it is dependable, quick, reasonably-priced, and the food is always good. I really like their extensive menu, including a large selection of rice noodle dishes. As other have said, this place is often crowded, usually a turnoff for me. But even at peak times I have rarely had trouble getting a table, and service is so efficient that I can still go here if I'm in a relative hurry to eat lunch. The outdoor seating is extensive both in front and on the patio in back, where they often provide a Thai buffet in the warmer months. A few other yelpers have complained about the bad "attitude" of the staff here. Personally I've never experienced any of that. They staff does seem very rushed, maybe even distracted, but that's about it. The only service snafu I've experience was when I arrived way past the lunch hour, sat out front, and the staff forgot I was there. But the other 19 or so times, service was speedy and professional. Here are some of my recent lunches here: -- Spicy and crispy catfish - $8.95: Fresh and delicious with a nice kick (I ordered medium spicy and it was just right). Perfectly cooked veggies and fish. Not a huge portion but big enough to satisfy -- Mus-sa-mun Chicken Curry - $7.95: Perfectly cooked chicken and potatoes in a thick, tasty sauce. More peanuty than other version I've had. Portion looked small but filled me up. -- Wide rice noodles with gravy sauce - $7.95; a great choice for a chilly day; Large, filling and savory; with chicken and broccoli on top, smothered by a delicious, light flavorful Thai gravy. Now I know that a 1 star rating is really weird for Amarin but read my story and judge for yourself. Our group ordered the coconut soup and my fiancee was doling out second servings when I glanced at the soup (as I'm wont to do...usually to ascertain what's left). To my utter horror and surprise, there was an inch-long cockroach floating in the soup. It was white which is somewhat of an odd color so I'm not sure if it was basically cooked till the brown color came off or whatever. One of our friends searched her soup and found what appeared to be a cockroach head. Now, the waitress was fast enough in taking the soup away and she did come and ask if we wanted another soup. We told her yes but not that coconut soup since there's no way that they would make another batch just for us. So we went with the spicy sour soup that's pretty good. I'll reiterate that the coconut soup was good...I didn't taste any cockroach or anything like that. Had I not noticed it however, very likely, it would have been scooped up since the coconut soup doesn't really allow you to see whatever is not at the surface. We didn't make a huge fuss about it (as some diners do) and just tried to move on, finish our meal and enjoy each other's company. I'm sure people around us knew about the cockroach since the tables are pretty close together and your ears are especially tuned to these things. The bad part was when the check came. They had charged us for the soup. To me, this was unacceptable. I've been to Western restuarants where things like this would mean an immediate comped meal, no questions asked, and profuse apologies (compared to the service we got later at Pasta? when they made a mistake, Amarin was terrible) from the manager. In the case of Amarin, I was charged for the soup and also the manager never came out to talk to us. I called the waitress over (who after she brought back the replacement soup avoided us like the plague) and told her in no uncertain terms that they had "accidentally" charged me for the soup. She didn't quibble with me over it and got it removed. Even so, I felt insulted in front of our friends that we were being treated this way. This bothered Emily and I so much that I went back the next day (It's not far from the Caltrain station) to talk to the manager and resolve the questions that I had. When I got there and asked to speak to the manager, the guy up front eyed me and asked me why I needed to speak with him. I wish I had a Health Inspector badge to flash but alas no. I told him that I was in the group that had the cockroach last night. All he said was "Oh ok" and went into the back. Now, I'm not sure if the guy that came out was the manager or not. He was an older guy but I've seen him out serving tables so maybe I was getting the run around here...whatever. I laid out what happened the night before and asked him if he knew about this. He said that he did. I told him that we were disappointed that he didn't come out in person. He said that it was busy the night before. I told him that it was but that he should have come out and apologized anyways. I then asked him about the check and what their policy was for these kind of things. He really wouldn't look me in the eye at this point and said that we got a replacement soup right. I said that yes we did. Then he said that then we should pay. Well, there you have it. That's their policy. I was rather surprised so I had him repeat it which he did. I then asked whether or not they got rid of the coconut soup that we all know sits in a vat in the back. He said that they did so immediately. Whether or not that's true is up to you. My impression is that if they are going to offer me another coconut soup so quickly after the incident, then they didn't get rid of it. My beef isn't so much that a cockroach was in our soup. I'm realistic enough to know that it's almost impossible for food to be bug free and that kitchens will have bugs. If it were a gnat or an ant, I wouldn't even bring it up. Lots of times, I'd just laugh it off and say that it's extra protein. However, a cockroach is not in the same category as an ant. My problem is with how they choose to handle these kind of situations. The indifference exhibited by the staff towards this abnormal incident gives me the impression that this restaurant does not give much weight to the issue of food safety and maintaining a standard level of quality. The bottom line is that though the food is flavorable, the service and management are sub-par. Amarin does not hold a monopoly for Thai cuisine in Mountain View, and we will definitely never set foot in this establishment again. It's too bad since my website overflows with positive reviews and I was looking forward to adding another one for Amarin.
