I have been here two times. On both occasions the service has been really poor. Not attentive and really they are floating on the fact that they have a good location on Castro Street. If you put the service to one side then the food is about average to perhaps even above average. At a time when we have so many choices on Castro Street, I believe its possible to get better service and better food elsewhere (I'm still looking) Walking by the kitchen it seems like a real hodge podge setup and cleanliess is average at best. The good, lots of outdoor seating, lots of indoor seating. This place is busy most evenings so it feels like its the right place to be. I'm still looking for better Thai food than this. read more

Overall, this is definitely one of my favorite restaurants. The coconut milk/lemon grass soup here is my ALL TIME favorite soup, of any type of soup - not just Thai. I will go there just to order the soup with prawns - truly a great dish. The tofu with vegetables and peanut sauce, along with the grilled salmon with Tamarind sauce round out a wonderful meal. The sweet pumpkin in red curry sauce is also a fantastic choice. This is really a 4 1/2 star review, but recent service issues have brought it down a half star. The last time I visited, every dish they brought to the table initially was a mistake (meant for another table). I don't mind seeing what other people ordered, but that was a little much. Lastly, it would be nice to see the waiters smile sometimes. They just look tired often or like they wish they were elsewhere. It's an interesting contrast with people who live in Thailand - they are always smiling and very friendly. Prices are average, and a good deal - considering the food quality. This place is okay. I usually judge Thai places by their pad kee mau. They didn't offer different levels of spiciness, and the noodles were definitely not spicy enough. I also got the crispy crab appetizer and banana macadamia nut roll with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The crab was pretty good, but a bit bitter in certain areas since it's a whole soft shell crab. The banana dessert was really good. It's pieces of banana wrapped in a layer of what tasted like fried pastry dough. The inside of the restaurant is pretty nice. My family and I came here for a birthday. We had come here a few years before, and had good memories of it, but this place has clearly changed... The customer service here was by far the worst I've dealt with at a sit down restaurant. After we were seated, it felt like the staff had COMPLETELY forgotten about us. No one checked in us, took our order, or anything. It got to be so long a wait that my dad had to get up and find a waiter. The waiter came over, and had an absolutely horrible attitude. She rolled her eyes multiple times when we asked questions about the food, and for water. Ten minutes later, there was still no water. We found another waiter (we had to get up again), and asked for water. He said "right away," but didn't give us water. Our appetizers came, and we still had not been given water, despite asking. About five minutes after, due to another request, we were finally granted water. Our food came, and we asked for some more water. The waitress rolled her eyes again, and never gave us this water. When we were given the check, an automatic 20% tip had been added. Because of how horrible the service was, we did not want to pay this, and asked to speak to the manager. Super crowded restaurant in the Castro!.The food is so delicious that we didn't mind waiting.The ambience of the restaurant is definitely traditional.I loved their Coconut milk soup and Pad thai especially.The waitresses are however not as amicable as other restaurants.We were not happy by the way they served food and their response when something is requested.The management has to make sure that hospitality has always got its place.We really didn't feel like tip them but however service charge is already added.Will go back for food and ambience. read more

I haven't been to Amarin in a while, since I worked on Castro Street a number of years back. I went in for lunch carryout today. The woman helping me was absolutely awesome, a great customer service representative of the restaurant. The food has gone downhill. I ordered my go-to panang chicken. Unfortunately, the dish wasn't all that good. It had a weird, sweet taste that I haven't experienced at Amarin before, and the chicken had a lot of fat on it. In addition, there were only two small slices of red pepper in the entire dish. Looks like this place is no longer gonna work for me. Food was ok.. but the service was very bad. Nobody was paying attention towards our table.it was like they were ignoring on purpose . We had to call the employees even for the water. After a while one lady just came and gave us the check without knowing if we were done or we wanted to have some dessert.one of friend found some dirt in water and told the waitress to give her another glass of water but the lady kept arguing that it's lemon particle from the lemon they put in the water jars. I love their traditional seating where you take off your shoes and sit in a "pit". We had a plate of appetizers to start off with. There was a good variety and the glazed duck was outstanding. But we were all disappointed by the entree. We had the BBQ chicken, lamb and beef. All the meats were cold, the rice as well and it was stickier than what it should have been. This was the second time that we have eaten at Amarin in Mountain View. The food was decent but the portions and prices were not with any value. I ordered the squid wih ginger. The portion was so small that I had to order an additional boul of rice. $11.95 for a portion that was for an appetizer! Ok - not the best thai food I've ever had, and yet, 5 stars? Why? How? What? Impossible? Really? Yes. Let me explain. It's better than any bar in the area. Their drinks are fab, and full of humor. The Barry Bonds Root beer float... not only delicious, but also knocks you off your feet. It's the perfect grown up version of a root beer float. Yummy. And yes, it's topped off with a big hunk of vanilla ice cream. The ice cream is necessary. The servers are awesome. Super flexible. Had a double date, could've waited 10 minutes for a seat inside, nah, I wanted to be outside. They pulled together a few tables for us without taking a beat. One waiter is my favorite. He's SO friendly, always smiling, and treated us like his pal. He gave us an off them menu drink the bartender whipped up. It had pop rocks in it. Enough said. Rude, butt hurt employees that don't know what customer service is. We asked them for a different table because we didn't want to sit near the kitchen/bathroom. However - they did not want to accommodate us by arranging a table (literally just combining two tables for a group of four). They gave the excuse that they wanted to use those tables for parties of two when many tables of two where already empty. Over that the fat lady that manages was beyond rude to us in her demeanor and said "thank you" when we left rather than apologizing for the inconvenience. Incredible! Best Thai cuisine I have eaten...ever! This authentic restaurant is beautifully decorated with original Thai crafts and symbolisms of their beautiful culture. The food is excellent. I was shockingly mistreated and I suggest to avoid this place at all cost. Both the owner guy and the waiter and waitresses (except the first guy who seated me who was very friendly) were rude and unprofessional. I sat and ordered Forest Curry based on the menu and because I like pumpkin. And coconut rice. When I received it, it tasted alright but was not what I expected. There was a white ingredient I didn't recognize that was the biggest ingredient, and there was very little pumpkin. After a few bites I asked the waitress what it was and she said they were soy proteins and then quickly left. But soy proteins were not among the ingredients of Forest Curry on the menu. After five more minutes I was able to fetch the waitress again and said that soy proteins were not on the menu and I expected more pumpkin. She seemed annoyed and first didn't wanna do anything about it. I said that there was another pumpkin dish on the menu that maybe she can bring that one instead. She first said no, but then took the plate and left. When she came back after 5 min. it was the same dish. It looked like maybe they threw a few pieces of pumpkin in it. I was surprised but she had already left. And when I tasted it it tasted awful with heavy taste of chlorinated water, maybe tap water. I was very annoyed and said they should take it back. Instead of trying to accommodate me she rudely said she cannot do anything, "you order you eat." I did not want to argue and just said I want the bill and leave. And she brought me the bill with the charge of forest curry included! I had only eaten one third of what they brought. I explained the situation to the owner and said I was not satisfied and they should not charge me for the forest curry. He was very rude and just said I have ordered and should pay. Then they left me alone at the table. After a while I felt offended waiting there and wanted to leave 10 dollars for the rice and everything (the whole bill was 18 dollars) and leave. The waiter and waitress ran to me as if I was a criminal and said they will call the police! I argued with them a little while saying this is not the way to treat a customer and they can call the police if they want. But then I thought it was not worth spending more time there, paid the money, took photos of the bill and the money, and left. This is the first time I have ever had this kind of experience. I was shocked and offended. I feel bad that I did not take the food with me because it seriously tasted like they put something unclean or tap water in it.. Avoid this restaurant. They don't deserve your patronage if they treat people like this. PS. The restaurant was crowded, even though I have noticed many earlier reviewers complained about poor and rude service and cheating with the bill. I guess many people may not care if food seems to be ok and not pricey. In my opinion, if a restaurant can treat a person like they treated me last night, you cannot trust them about hygiene and healthy/clean ingredients either because they don't respect you and they do not care. read more

My wife politely asked to return her dish to try something different. The owner came to our table and literally poked his head, implying that she was crazy. This place has it all! There food and the service were great! If I have those 2 things, then my night is set! They have a big selection (vegetarian, too) and everything I've tried has been fantastic. My favorites are the Papaya Salad (Som Tum), Shrimp Pad Thai, Chicken or Duck Panang Curry, and my new favorite, Honey Pork. The service is fantastic. They're attentive and friendly EVERY time. If you like spicy food, you can vary the heat with a 1-5 heat system. Also try the pickled jalapenos (not thai chiles) in the little pepper rack with your meal. You have to ask for it and it goes along great with your meal. Adds even another layer of flavor. They're not open all day, so make sure you check the dining hours. They also have outside tables if it's one of those sunny days. read more
