I just want to have a quick dinner tonight since I don't feel like cooking. I walked in waited to be seated. Two wait staff said nothing as I walked in and continued their conversation. After a short while, one of them told me to sit wherever since it was not busy. And then I was ready to order my food and no one came to offer water or to take my order. His Vietnamese coffee was good and strong, the Thai tea was a little weaker than I've tasted at other places. The pho without putting the bone marrow in it was basic, not amazing but not bad. With the bone marrow in it, there was more umami but eating the bone marrow on its own it had a weird meat flavor that I can't put my finger on. Maybe because it wasn't seasoned, idk. I didn't care for it but my husband thought it was good. I'm not a spicy girlie, but I had to put 2 little spoon fulls of chili oil, 1 spoonful of chili paste, and Sriracha for my pho to be a tiny bit flavorful. So their chili sides were literally weak sauce. They do have a ghost pepper sauce add on in the menu so I guess if you need any spicy level in your food you should order that. Decided to try this place for lunch with friends and made reservations on OpenTable. I love reservations just to guarantee getting a table! Located where Panda Express used to be, which is street side facing the ocean. Parking is in the ward theater parking structure or Whole Foods. Those are most likely the closest. Very nice decor and I can't even tell it was a Panda Express before. The combo pho is what I decided to try. My friends got banh Mi and spring roll vermicelli. Both they said was yummy. Ok, I thought that this place was like some really fancy Vietnamese restaurant, but turns out they are just very modern in their interior design! I like the open kitchen concept as well! We had a group of 5 and we needed a spot that has outdoor seating because we were riding our e-bikes. This place has some outdoor seatings that's definitely a plus! I wasn't sure if they were short staffed but I only saw one server, one bartender, and 2 people in the kitchen cooking. But I will say that even if it seems that they were short staffed they did an amazing job because they had a party of 14 come in as well and they were able to accommodate them inside. I had spoken to the bartender that we were gonna sit outside but he was probably backed up on drink orders. So I went inside to get the menus. Shortly after the server came out and she was very helpful and friendly! Like 5 stars for her because she was a trooper!! She took all of our orders and brought them out as well and remembered which order belonged to who! We ordered the tripe pho, the combo bahn mi, the Vietnamese crepe and a side of the bone marrow. Our friends each ordered a rice dish themselves and they said that their food was yummy as well! I will definitely recommend and visit this place again!! The name An Di Dzo means cheers, and the full bar and happy hour menu definitely live up to that name. I visited with a friend after a sunset yoga class, and we were excited to try the famous bahn mi sandwiches that we had heard so much about from her boyfriend who saw a video that went viral of their bahn mi. Our server recommended the pork and lemongrass chicken bahn mi, and we also ordered the Vietnamese crepe bahn exo and the fresh shrimp summer rolls with peanut sauce. Each dish was bursting with fresh ingredients that perfectly balanced the savory flavors. To drink, we had the fragrant jasmine tea, which was served at the perfect temperature. I liked that it wasn't served in a traditional tea cup and at a cooler but still warm temperature which made it so refreshing. We sat outside since we had a dog with us, but the chic interior decor made me excited to come back and dine inside. I'm especially looking forward to returning for happy hour to try out their cocktails, bone marrow, and Vietnamese Charcuterie, which is only served from 5pm - 6:30pm. An Di Dzo is what you'd expect from a Vietnamese restaurant in Ward, over priced with unimpressive food quality. However there was one dish that really stood out. The shaken beef over rice is delectable. The portion was generous, the steak perfectly seasoned and cooked to your desired temperature. I would come back just for this dish. The photogenic canoe cut bone marrow available at an additional price with their signature steak and bone marrow pho is decently portioned. The flavors of the broth are bland and just not that great. The rare steak is very standard, fresh but not generously portioned considering the price. Overall the pho was a huge miss, and it didn't even come with any of the standard garnishes (basil, culantro bean sprouts, lemon, jalapeño etc). The Beef stew with baguette was alright, not great but not terrible. Generous sized baguette, but the bowl of stew was on the small side. It doesn't really show in the pic I took, but the bowl was quite small. The banh beo came with two awkwardly sized pieces. It was hard to get the toppings all in one bite as the base was large and fell apart easily. It also seemed that our dish was missing the pork and chopped chicharon. Disappointing because this was a dish I was looking forward to. There was only one server working and she seemed overwhelmed. Service was very slow but she was nice when she remembered our table. I got curious about this spot after seeing it downstairs at the Ward theaters shops. We went for dinner and although we called ahead for a reservation, they had seating so it wasn't necessary. The restaurant itself has a very clean and upper scale cafe vibe compared to the typical Vietnamese restaurants offered on island. They also have a bar seating area and booths to make for variety in seating choices. Unfortunately when we went, the booths were taken so we sat down at the regular tables. I ordered a Thai iced tea and the bone marrow pho, while my fiancé ordered the rib bone and brisket pho. Both were very tasty and you can tell that the meat was stewed in the broth for additional flavor, however we both agreed that the bone marrow broth tasted better. The soup encompassed the flavors of the marrow really well, and it was a noticeable difference compared to the regular beef broth. One thing I want to point out is that we had to ask for the complementary plate of veggies to add to our soup. I'm not sure if they forgot to give it to us, or if you just have to ask for it if you want it, but that's what we ended up doing anyway. They were nice about it either way! Also, I can't recall what the drink my fiancé got was called, but I remember the server saying it was the restaurant's take on a Bloody Mary. It was spicy and they actually put the pho broth inside, so it was definitely an interesting taste. We both didn't personally enjoy it, but it was still an experience to try! My Thai tea was amazing though. The spring rolls were also delicious, but I wish the portions were a bit more. The pho broth was super clean, probably some of the best broth I've had in a while. Didn't want to put too much chili oil in it so I could enjoy the broth as is. The Vietnamese ice coffee was nice and strong, and the summer rolls were fresh and refreshing. Tried to make an order online but there was one item that was not on the menu (beef stew) but was available in store. So we attempted to make a phone order. A guy answered after the 3rd call, though he didn't sound too thrilled and halfway through the conversation we got disconnected. So I called back 2 more times and the same server answered. I mentioned that we got disconnected and his answer was "yeah I know." I then asked if he got the order in its entirety and if he needed a name or phone number to confirm and he said "just come to the restaurant." And so we headed on down all the way from Kailua into town. When we got there, the place was filled, except the bar countertop seats were all empty. We stood on the inside/side of the front entrance for about 5 minutes until anyone addressed us. And as I suspected, they couldn't find my phone order initially. The ambiance felt chaotic and unorganized. They then told us that they were finishing up making our order, so we had to wait for another 15 minutes. Luckily the woman working that night was polite, but the guy had no clue what was going on. When we got home to partake in our meal, the pho was not to our liking. We heated up the soup and sides on the stove, and it still wasn't it. For the first time in my life, I threw a meal away, the soup was just flavorless and bland, even though I heard so many good things about it. The beef stew on the other hand, total 180. Met a friend here for lunch and my friend had been here once and spoke highly of it. My immediate observation upon arriving is that the windows were dirty (considering this is an upscale eatery). We decided to walk around Ward after my son's school event to find a ramen place, but all had a line and a long wait, and since we passed by this restaurant a few days prior, we tagged it to try in the future, and glad we did. Beef Rib Bone Pho - 4 stars - for $18.50, the serving was average, but the soup and beef rib bone was very flavorful and filling. You can choose to have 2 rib bones or traditional combo meat with one rib bone. I'd definitely order this again. Combination Pho - 3.5 stars - for $17.50, a variety of meat in pho noodles. Although the soup had flavor, the broth wasn't as beefy as the beef rib bone. The basil and veggie garnishes were very fresh, but the noodles in both soups were cooked a little too soft, and not your traditional pho noodles. My son also ordered a vermicelli combo for $16.95. He said it was very tasty. Just so happen when we got there, happy hour was still going on which is from 5pm -6:30pm. He said that there was no bartender at the moment, but he would be able to pour some beers. My cousin and his son had one beer each. There were a couple of female servers who also checked on us and offered to fill our water glasses! ENVIRONMENT: The high ceiling made the place feel spacious. It sure was clean and bright! For sure, it's safer than Chinatown! FOOD: my cousin's wife had the Lemongrass chicken Bahn Mi - she liked it! My cousin, his son, and my mom got pho. One of the best banh mi I've had! Stopped by for a quick lunch early on a Friday, around 1100, and it was perfect; quiet and chill with seating in abundance! The portion was a of bigger than expected and probably bigger than a lot of other pho places. Though the broth didn't strike me as a 12 hour boiled broth since the flavor's not that strong. My friend ordered the lemongrass chicken cold noodles and the portion was really big too. But the lemongrass chicken tasted a bit like curry chicken. The spring rolls were decent but I thought there would be more. This is essentially just 2 pieces cut in half. But it's crispy enough. ***3.5 STARS*** When a foodie friend of Vietnamese descent tells you "This Vietnamese restaurant is good." You follow her lead. That's what I did. However, I did my due diligence prior to my visit. I glanced at their food pics and read a handful of reviews and concluded that I'm going for the food and not customer service. And, be warned if you order the bone marrow or beef bone pho for either no bone marrow or non-tender beef bones. And the reviews are quite spot on. Located in Ward Village with nearby neighbors of Ward Theaters, Dave & Busters and Bucca di Beppo Italian Restaurant, An Di Dzo (ADD) is the sister restaurant of popular Cuu Long II Vietnamese Restaurant in Chinatown. This restaurant is conveniently located in Kaka'ako with ample parking connected to the complex. Upon entry, you get that upscale vibe with glass windows, high ceilings, open kitchen, and a bar. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. All staff were wearing black. Impressive. We were immediately served water and menus. But after this, the wheels started to get loose. Our server was a young Asian male who wore a very wrinkled black t-shirt. I spoke with my foodie friend for suggestions as she has been here before and raves over ADD's food. I decided to trust the reviews and ordered Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) but with glass noodles instead. Friend also ordered the same thing but with regular noodles and we also got the shaking beef salad to share. My other friends ordered the bone marrow pho to share. The restaurant was quite empty on a Thursday night, so it didn't take that long for our food to arrive. After taking our photos, it was time to dig in. THE VERDICT: Overall, I found the food to be quite tasty and to my liking. The flavors, texture and color contrasts hit the spot. My Bun Bo Hue was hearty and filling, but it lacked spiciness and the temperature hot broth that I like. Luckily, I was able to use some of my friend's ghost pepper sauté ($1) that she ordered. The Shaking Beef Salad was tasty and executed well. The sautéed beef chunks with onions were seasoned nicely and tender, and the beef sat on a green salad that was fresh and crisp. My food selection was so good that I'd order these 2 dishes again. However, on the downside when our food was delivered, we didn't have any utensils. We had to ask for them. Furthermore, we all had bowls of pho but no condiments nor plate of herbs and veggies. We had to ask our server. Keep in mind that the restaurant wasn't busy, and it took him quite some time to bring the plates of veggies and herbs to our table. ***birds chirping*** To make matters worse, all our bowls of noodles had errors. The server specifically brought out the Bun Bo Hue with "regular" noodles first and next the bowl with glass noodles. After sampling the broth and taking photos, including the noodle pull, I realized I got the wrong bowl of Bun Bo Hue as I had regular noodles. He ended up serving the wrong bowls. Rather than sending the food back to the kitchen because we had sampled the broth, we just switched bowls. Then, the other friend ordered the bone marrow pho but had 2 rib bones inside. She split this bowl with her husband and after distributing the food, she searched for the bone marrow and not to be found so she advised the waiter the bone marrow was missing. This error was corrected with the kitchen plated the bone marrow swimming in a plate of broth. Can the customer service get any worse? Our server was about to clear away the shaking beef salad when food was still on it. Then, while we were still eating our server attempted to have us settle the bill but we were still eating so we declined. Restaurant closes at 9pm and it was shortly after 8pm. Not fond of being rushed out like that. There was also confusion when we requested to arrange separate checks, but he advised us the Yelp check-in offer of 10% is applied only once per table. Overall, mixed feelings of my first experience dining at ADD. The food clearly was tasty, and I loved the ambiance, but reviewers are spot on with their comments on customer service. Despite such poor customer service, I still gave 20% tip. Perhaps management needs to better train their employees or do a better job screening their applicants to see if they can serve tables solo. If there's 50 Vietnamese restaurants in Honolulu, we have probably tried 49 of them. We had absolutely no idea that this was a Pho joint and was pleasantly surprised when we walked by looking for a quick dinner. We ordered the combination Pho, Vermicelli with lemon grass and spring rolls. Of course we always order an extra side of spring cuz it prevents spring roll fights. The spring rolls were fired to perfection,with a filling that had meat but also perhaps taro potato? Whatever it was it was delicious. My hubby had the pho and I was only given a small piece of tendon. I judge a pho by its tendon and this melted in my mouth. For being a new restaurant it's expected that I have a small yet comprehensive menu. We were intrigued by the Lobster Pho and the Bone Marrow Pho.. we will need to comeback on date night without the kids. Our second visit to this place yielded yet again some dishes that we were pleasantly surprised with. Did you know you can order a mini bowl of Pho for $10ish dollars? You have the option of "topping or add ins" like fatty brisket ( get this!), tendon and raw steak to name a few which would still total up a decent amount t do pho to $13-14 dollars. The summer rolls tasted super fresh! The star of this dinner show however was the pork banh mi which we decided to order mid meal and I just wanna say it slapped! It was the deliciously marinated sliced grilled pork that stole the show. The waiter informed us that the pork can be ordered with a rice plate and/or on vermicelli noodles. I could seriously just order a side of that pork and take it home to eat as a snack! The baguette was legit because it had that light crisp crunch on the crust and that perfect chew. I wish I ordered 2 sandwiches because my son decided that it was his new favorite dish and ate most of it. The prices were on trend at $80 minus tip for 3 bowls of pho, summer rolls, spring rolls and a banh mi. As far as Vietnamese pho joints it still satisfied as far as delicious flavor but with a limited menu not as vast as some restaurants. I would say no no no on so many levels just no. Honestly, the food was just as unamusing as the service. My first impression what that the young man interacting with customers didn't want to be there. Before venturing off into a menu shopping spree I elected for the spring rolls and the broth. Always like to see how the basics are done. To describe both as unappetizing is an understatement. How this place stays open with such performance, is a miracle. Also, interesting spring-roll dish in they assemble it on the tiny pieces of lettuce for you with a tiny sliver of cucumber, a teaspoon worth of pickled vegetables, and no real care. Judging by the quality of the ingredients I assume the intention is to cut down on what's used, giving me the customer the minimum while still displaying some effort. Tiny taro pieces in a spring roll? Doesn't work. The spring rolls are extremely tiny and tasted freezer burned, and other than that, no real taste. Also overcooked. Lettuce was not completely fresh. Total $16 fail. Even the fish sauce was just bleh basic. No real care or anything to remember. The broth I could not bear to have more than a couple of sips, no taste other than pure saltines, and it was the beginning of the day, so it should've tasted fresh and amazing, I know at other places it sure does. Really did not enjoy my experience here, will stick to some of the classic places I know in the area and leave this one for the tourists. I didn't appreciate the young man's crappy attitude and stinkeye when I walked by outside, he made it a point to try and mad dog and behave as a child, presumably for not getting a big tip, and probably lucky for him that was the extent of his disrespect, but YOU are supposed to take ownership of your work, YOU are supposed to offer VALUE for a tip, SERVICE with professionalism and PRIDE in your food. If you can't do that, talk to the owner. I'm not tipping on poor execution and over inflated prices when all you had to do was bring me two tiny dishes. He didn't even check on my table or ask how the food was, the place wasn't even busy. As they laughed behind the counter, I could only imagine that it was because of the joy from ripping off people with such horrible and overpriced "food". I was actually so shocked after I left that later in the day I checked out yelp to see what other people had to say and sure enough the exact same complaints. And to see how the owner replies, so defensively and without care or empathy to the customers just here on yelp, tells me what I need to know. Making excuses for the mediocre broth by saying the customer is used to Northern style, southern style, etc., and then name dropping like 20 years ago is relevant today, NO!!! you are messing up and need to take ownership! You broth is NOT good, not what I had Saturday morning and you have every tool and opportunity to fix it! It's not about northern or southern style, go to Los Angeles , I'll take you to Westminster and Garden Grove and I'm a black guy and I'll show you the spots that are amazing and nobody is talking about northern or southern style. They make stuff that works that the customers enjoy and they make millions and millions of dollars selling broth. Period! Lastly, the menus are not laminated and are DIRTY! Like literal dirt and food stains. You think people enjoy this? First impressions are everything. Here's some free advice- You need to hire a manager and/or a business coach and take some responsibility and pride. If sad face dude at the front don't wanna be aloha to everyone, send him to McDonald's, it's a liability. Lastly, you need to HONOR and RESPECT everyone who comes through that door and be GRATEFUL they're spending money with you. And EVERY. SINGLE. COMMENT! The food here was good. They have pho soup noodles, rice dishes, banh mis, egg rolls, and plenty of salad options so there is something for everyone. However, service was veryy slow. On top of that, our table placed our individual orders with the server and he didn't write anything down. Later, he came back and asked us all again what we ordered. This took even more time to get our food. Half of our table got their food first and they were almost done eating, then the other side got their food.
