Perhaps it was the VR escape room with goblins that may have altered my perception of reality, but Anixi completely redefined my opinion of vegan cuisine. My advice: go with groups so you can order as much as you can. You will want to divide-and-conquer your way through this menu of fantastic dishes. If you have a friend group with mixed dietary needs, you simply must add this place to your list. My top hits, in order: the chicken skewer, the kachapuri, and the three dip mezze with pita. The fake chicken tasted better than actual chicken. I simply could not believe that the "egg" and "cheese" in the kachapuri were not the real thing. If you're a vegetarian/vegan who scoffs at food that tries to mimic animal products, have no fear: these dishes are way better. Not to mention, the entire ambiance has a majestic feel. You'll walk up to the unassuming outside that looks vaguely like an abandoned Chelsea dental office, but you'll be immediately swept into a chic and beautifully decorated space. read more

Came here for lunch on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Upon entering I can't say I was warmly welcomed by the host who seemed bothered that I was carrying a wet umbrella. He wanted me to leave the umbrella up front , seemed annoyed when I said I was taking with me to the table. But the 5 stars goes to the food and waiter. I did enjoy my meal. The food was delicious. Presentation was creatively displayed. I Had the mushroom kebab with harissa, mint, pomegranate molasses, roasted carrots and turnips. Dessert was the rose Malabi: coconut cream custard with cardamom, rose water, pistachios, strawberry. It was delicious. Despite the fact that the host wasn't very welcoming; food was excellent. We came here on a double date and were incredibly impressed. We didn't even realize that the restaurant was fully vegan until half way through dinner because you truly could not tell. Their drinks are great and the service is very good. We got a bunch of plates to share - 3 Dip Mezze (Fire Roasted Eggplant, Whipped Ricotta, Manti Lamb Pockets, Kabocha Squash), Crispy Lamb Cigars, Kofta Kabobs, Mujudara and Glazed Carrots & Turnips. Where do I even start? Divine vegan food served in an elegant setting that makes you feel like you're existing in full Gatsbyesque glory... hello, dream come true! I love vegan food. I love Mediterranean food, which is often vegetarian-friendly but not quite vegan-friendly (so many decadent yogurt sauces, not to mention feta cheese on like, everything). Then there's the meat kebobs and lamb everything and a vegan can rightfully avoid such cuisine, which is sad because there are so many fresh, delicious ingredients otherwise. Enter Anixi and their phenomenal menu which features mezze, pillowy herbed breads and surprising meat and cheese substitutes. Don't worry, if the latter isn't for you no matter what, there's a plethora of vegetable-based options, but for those who miss meat, or those who have friends who love meat, you'll be hard pressed to feel deprived at Anixi. The menu is simply a sight to behold. Truth told, I kept lovingly gazing at it before even coming here. My group (yes, they can accommodate those here) started with the 5 mezze option which is a great value with extremely generous portions. In fact we couldn't even finish every dip and with two more apps, we were already full. My favorite of the mezze was the Tarasamalata which was surprising, because I don't always love tangy yogurt-inspired dips but this is next level delicious. It's slightly salty and the orange seaweed caviar is such a nice surprise as a garnish. It's rare that I experience such unique flavors unlike anything that I've tried before! The ricotta is also luscious, slightly sweet. The kobucha squash isn't something I'd normally order but the preserved lemon cream makes it next level. I'd say the hummus and eggplant dips are excellent but if you go for the top three, I'd go with the three that I mention as standout. The breads that we chose: warm pita with beloved za'atar and herbed bread that is so heavenly, that I couldn't believe it. We also shared the artichoke tots (not my favorite, though the sauce that come with is delicious) and ricotta and spinach borek rolls (heavenly!) And then, I had to go for the Chunk steak Kabob. Simply put: it is almost TOO real. This is something better enjoyed not on its own as it's a little too rich for me and needs potatoes or bread. I'd share it and order with sides. The cocktail list is simply glorious, but I stuck to a nero d'avola. They have an impressive wine list as well, but a nice by the glass selection. And of course I was too full for dessert but I'm right now pining for that date cake. Goals for next time. I love Coletta, a sister restaurant, and thought that was my favorite NY vegan restaurant but Anixi may now be my #1. From the minute I walked into Anixi, I knew I was in for an incredible culinary experience. A restaurant with so little light that you can barely read the menu is exactly up my alley. I was accompanied by my mom and her good friend, both of whom usually can't stand such dark establishments, but they didn't have the appetite to complain once the dishes began to arrive. We ordered the three dip mezze to start and chose taramasalata, fire-roasted eggplant, and whipped ricotta to go with fresh, hot-out-of-the-oven pita- all of which were heavenly. The drink menu was impressive as well, boasting a list of cocktails flavored by Mediterranean fruits, vanilla, and spices. When the main event of the show came out- the famous Georgian khachapuri- I could barely believe my eyes. Perfectly egg-like vegan sunny side ups lay in a warm blanket of pita which, when poked tenderly with a fork, oozed a savory golden yolk filling. I had truly never consumed such a thing in my life. Finally, the Medjool date cake was the perfect coda to our meal, which was stuffed with warm dark chocolate, nuts, and figs, and served with vanilla ice cream for a final cool touch. As the daughter of a Greek woman, there are some things you just don't play around with when it comes to Mediterranean food- like ruining Greek salads with iceberg lettuce, or serving anything savory that isn't drowning in lemon juice. Thankfully, we didn't have to worry about that at Anixi- every dish was brimming with tradition and authenticity, while simultaneously displaying an impressive understanding of inventive interregional fusions. I also greatly appreciate Anixi for not overly relying on mock meats to fill its menu. Too many vegan restaurants attempt to recreate as many meats as possible in order to attract more meat-eating customers. And too many high-end Greek restaurants make meat the whole focus, while neglecting the centuries-old Greek tradition of performing culinary miracles with fruits, vegetables, and legumes. The animal product alternatives that Anixi does serve are fresh and innovative, such as the orange and black seaweed caviar peppered throughout its mezzes, and "lamb" exquisitely spiced with cinnamon, za'atar, sumac, coriander, and so on. Fortunately for me, but unfortunately for this review, I was too "in the moment" to take any photos of the marvelous interior, dishes, or drinks. Thankfully, there are plenty of others online who have uploaded photos for reference. As a final note before you go-- if you're an everyday working class citizen like I am, your pockets will be hurting after a meal at this place. It really is a pity that fresh and scrumptious ingredients have to come at such an expense. Anixi may be my new favorite vegan restaurant in NYC. Each dish was amazing and the ambience and service was magnificent. After seeing Anixi all over Instagram, I knew I needed to make a reservation ASAP and try it out. Plus I love their sister restaurant Coletta. Each dish was packed with flavor and so unique. We ordered the tuna tartare to start, the za'atar pita chip were delicious and the perfect vessel for the tuna. The vegan caviar is so unique and definitely something you can't find anywhere else. For our entrees we got the chicken rice special (which was our favorite dish) and Turkish flat bread. The chicken rice was creamy, but not heavy, and packed with so much flavor (I hope they make this a permanent dish!). The flat bread was also delicious, topped with two vegan eggs which truly resembled an actual egg. And to end the night we got the Ekmek Kataifi, which was perfectly sweet. We loved the crunch of the phyllo paired with the rich whipped cream in the middle. This is definitely a pricier place to dine at, but each dish is worth it. The creativity behind the dishes is incredible and the knowledgeable and kind staff is a cherry on top. We went to Anixi for dinner on a Friday. We were promptly seated as per our reservation time. The ambience was clean and polished, was very pleasant. Joseph and his team were phenomenal, they took really good care of us, Joseph's recommendations were on point and he was very attentive to our needs. The service at Anixi really took our experience to another level. For drinks I ordered the Pomegranate Oregano Soda, it was refreshing and not overly sweet. Looked really pretty when the drink was served, was 3.5/5 for me. For food we ordered: 1. Choice of 3 Dip Mezze: - Whipped "Ricotta" (GF): 5/5 - was delicious, smooth, had delicious flavor with an incredible orange and saffron sauce. - Fire Roasted Eggplant Mezze (GF): 5/5 - had smoky eggplant flavors and a very smooth texture. Eggplant was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing with Zaatar bread. - Taramasalata (GF): 5/5 - tasted better than Tatziki in my opinion, I could not identify coconut milk at all, fruit served was treated to perfection. - Housemade Breads - Zaatar Bread: 5/5 - was perfectly spiced and soft like a pillow, really enjoyed this, except I feel ricotta would be better with normal bread. 2. Manti "lamb" Pockets: 3/5 - the sauce was delicious, but the meat itself was a little bit dry. The other dishes were enjoyable than this one, although the presentation was fabulous! 3. Vegan Chicken Skewers: 5/5 - was an absolute hit for us, I think it was called Chicken Shish Kebob was absolutely flavorful, chewy yet soft and it slid out of the skewers. Really ENJOYABLE dish. 4. After many years as fans of Beyond Sushi, we finally had the opportunity to try Anixi yesterday. This was a truly exceptional meal. If we lived closer, we would come often! That said, it is well worth the time (1.5 hours) to drive into the city and eat at Anixi. Every dish we tried had complex flavors and was delicious. We had the beet and citrus salad and the spinach borek as a first course. I would come back just for these two items! I've been missing that feta since I tried it on the beet salad at an old Beyond Sushi location. Each bite was fantastic, both then and now! We shared the mushroom (braised "beef") pide and the grilled chik'n shish kabob as entrees. Wow. Just wow. We really appreciated the flavors, textures, and especially the green tahini sauce! It complemented the grilled vegan chick'n perfectly. For dessert we tried the special raspberry baklava cheesecake, which was just lovely. The crunch of the filo dough with the sweet and tart elements! The raspberry cream was amazing! Also, I had the housemade soda in cucumber, mint, lemon. So refreshing! Loved the Mizrahi music, too! Dining at Anixi was a great experience start to finish! Our server was great and food came out pretty quick. Everyone loved their drinks. They were strong but tasted amazing. The prickly lemon drop drink and the fig bourbon drink were the 2 biggest hits. To start off- We had a large group so we got all 5 dips. All of them were packed with flavor and were very different. The favorite one amongst us was the pomegranate one. The pita came out warm and fresh. The lamb dumplings were another one of our faves, the vegan cured salmon was also so cool and tasted great as well. The chicken gyro rolls look cool but I wasn't the biggest fan of the flavor in these. The lamb cigars were also a cool concept but wouldn't order again. I've wanted to try Anixi for a while so was excited to go for a group dinner so I could try more than a few items. The vibe inside is nice, the decor is classy and a bit unsuspecting from what it looks like outside. Unfortunately, the service was not the best. From the hostess that greeted us at the door to our actual server, there was an air of rudeness to a lot of the people we interacted with, everyone in my group noticed this early on. The drinks were okay, the cucumber za'atar cocktail was not my favorite, but their take on a espresso martini, the Greek frappe, was solid. The food itself was beautifully presented, I loved the dinnerware used. We tried all five of the mezze dips and I'd rank them from favorite to least favorite as: (1) fire roasted eggplant (2) whipped ricotta (3) taramasalata (4) hummus (5) kabocha squash. I was disappointed by the herb bread, it was a bit dry and not great for dipping. The pita bread was solid and the pita chips were fine, wish we were served more whole chips than crumbs though. The lamb cigars were a hit for everyone, and the braised "beef" pide was good, although I wasn't a fan of the vegan cheese they used for this one. We also tried the beef mnazaleh, which is essentially a stew with a pita baked on top. I was excited to try the "beef" in this one as its advertised as the Chunk brand steak, but I've had far better beef substitutes. The stew was also on the watery side making this a difficult dish to share so I'd avoid if ordering for a group. The chicken shish kabob was the highlight of the meal, the "meat" was so juicy, charred, and went well with the green tahini sauce. The skewers appear huge but they have pretty thin pieces of chicken on them so it's not all that much food. We finished with the date cake which was once again beautifully presented, and the taste matched the presentation on this one. Overall, the dishes are priced a bit high for what you're getting, but the ambiance is nice so it's worth visiting for an occasion. I can't say it's my favorite vegan restaurant in the city, but it does fill a unique niche with vegan-izing classic Mediterranean dishes. read more

Absolutely gorgeous dining room. Fun, informative, attentive service. And food that will blow your mind. This is where the science of food can actually be fun. There's no "foam" on the plate, but gastronomy is key to that khachapuri (unless it's witchcraft and either way, I'm going back to get it again). They have vegan runny eggs. That are EXACTLY the right texture and flavor. The lamb cigars are delicious -- very like lamb, but also just delicious and worth the visit. Their special tonight was a seared salmon and I swear it FLAKED like salmon. The best part of that dish, though, was the creamy, "cheesy" saffron orzo. Flavors were great, the copycat ability to non-vegan food is astounding. You could easily pass this off without telling someone the whole place is vegan. But better than a "parlor trick," it's also just a lovely, upscale plant-based experience, right down to the cocktails. The rosewater ice cream was just slightly soap-like (I think you can have too much rose water flavor...) but the date cake with chocolate cream cheese filling was good. Anixi never fails! Although they have changed some of the menu since they first opened, the food is still as incredible as ever. I hope to find a favorite drink here-the Cucumber Collins is good, but how good depends on the bartender of the evening. To eat, do not skip starting with the Mezze + bread option. The layer bread is a must, and my favorite dips are the Ricotta, Taramasalata and the Eggplant. As far as the appetizers and entrees go, there's not a single bad thing on the menu, but you can't go wrong with the Manti Pockets and the Chickn Kabobs, which are unreal. The Khachapuri Pide is incredibly realistic and we actually had to do a double-take and ask if the eggs were for sure vegan. Chef Guy really knows what he's going in making vegan cuisine taste "as close to the real thing" as possible. The ambiance in here is also phenomenal. If you don't order this, why did you even come? - for dessert, if you want drama, go for ekmek katafifi. Delicious cream and phyllo dough in a bed of fried dessert noodles.... My words not the actual names . Super fun to break down and eat. The vegan meat is served beautifully and is tasty but is not a 1:1 replacement for the flavors of animal meat. We tried the lamb skewer and it had more of a chorizo flavor. Vegan meat, however processed, is still healthier in every way (research confirmed!) than grass fed, organic anything so you're always choosing better if you choose a vegan meat. I'd never eat animal meat but do love the flavor. I'm confident one day we'll get the flavor of steak and lamb in a vegan product but so far I haven't found the 'just right' replacement. Next time, and there will be many next times, I'd try: - dips: tramasalata - arak cured salmon (the presentation is them hanging up in a dramatic way which made us sad we didn't try it!!) - chicken gyro rolls: vegan chicken is the only vegan meat that's been perfected so these would probably be insane - wild mushroom kabob: I feel like they'd do mushrooms well - beef mnazaleh: looks like a comforting gratin that would be perfect on a cold NYC day like we're having now. Would love to dip my fork in one of these for a taste. - dessert: raspberry and pistachio baklava cheesecake: I know Guy does cheesecake well and baklava is just always delicious so this combo is probably a 10/10. Okay I want to start by saying that the more vegan restaurants in NYC, the better. It's great that this is happening! But in all honesty, this did not live up to the hype I had heard from friends/internet, and I don't think the food is special enough to come back. The environment is pretty cool, with high ceilings and a regal feel; the service was fine, even if they were a bit slow on a Monday night, I'll give it a pass. Food-wise, the dips to start I'll say were average, with the whipped ricotta being the only thing I would get again. I expected more from the lamb cigars, but they were a big disappointment given a lack of flavor and the only spice being cumin. The chicken skewers we got were probably my favorite thing we ordered, but even then, just a bit bland and nothing to feel great about. Wow!!! The food was amazing here. I had 3 different appetizers (mezze) for my meal so I could try different things and everything was wonderful. Favors and textures were perfect. It was hard to believe everything was vegan. The service was also very good and quick. My waitress was very knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. The ambiance was nice and romantic with nice detail. It's located in the Chelsea neighborhood. I would highly recommend however it's expensive I went alone and paid $80 without any alcohol but i did have dessert. 20/10 recommend this restaurant! Traveled from Arizona to eat at at least one of Chef Guy's restaurants while I was in town for the weekend. My life goal is to eat at all of them (haha). But, Anixi did not disappoint. I've been vegan for 6-7 years now, and this is by far the best vegan food I've ever had. Even my omnivore friends thought it was delicious.
