Had a great lunch on a freezing cold day in the city. Wife had the spanakopita which she thought was amazing and I had moussaka that was huge and tasted delicious. The waitstaff was very friendly too and was great with our 4 year old. Only drawback is the place is small and everything inside is crowded and stuffed together, with tiny restrooms, but really this is the norm for Manhattan so I can't fault them for that. This place is disgusting. My coffee mug had red lipstick on it! I sent it back and they brought me an even dirtier mug. I had asked for well done hash browns and they basically gave me regular hash downs with a coating of black char on top. They also charged $11 for two tiny glasses of OJ. I'm not feeling the Applejack Diner. If you're in NYC, eat anywhere else but here. The service was very slow (odd considering it wasn't crowded at all (that should be a clue it isn't a good place to eat)). The decor is very dated and even though they might be going for that rustic diner feeling, it doesn't work. The menu is too large for everything to be prepared fresh and made-to-order. I ordered the fried calamari, which came with fries and Beef Barley soup. The calamari tasted bland and the fries were some of the most boring I've had. The highlight would be the lemon with my water (which went unfilled for a majority of the meal) or the crackers with my soup. If you want to experience NYC, eat anywhere but here. I have seen mixed review of this restaurant, but to me the food is decent. MAYBE a bit overpriced but then again this is New York and this place is an iconic diner not your street corner diner. I have to say the deserts are not particularly special. They have interesting variety and I chose chocolate moose cheesecake, which is unique. It is not particularly tasting special but it will do! My Broiled Seafood lunch was ordered without scallops and in exchange the chef added extra salmon and shrimp. The portion is decent. I would normally have a doggie bag, but not this time. Came here a few days ago while family was in town for a quick bite and if your looking for an old school diner at an affordable rate you can give this place a shot. I really enjoyed my waffles however the Canadian bacon was extremely salty and not in a good way, it was to the point i took one bite and had to down a glass of water to remove the taste from my mouth. Our waiter was not very friendly but he did his job as far as our orders goes. I would come back here but it wouldn't be my go to diner when I'm in the city. This place doesn't even deserve 1 star if not for the only way to post a review. We went there to grab a quick bite as we didn't have enough time to wait on the long line at Stardust Diner, our diner of choice. We had to catch a show. Upon arrival we were seated quickly but it went downhill right after. Waitress comes and asks of there are 3. We say no and all she did was remk vod e the 3rd set of utensils. She then disappeared for about 20 minutes. Sitting there waiting for someone to come take our order. Clock ticking. No one. I got up and asked the employees loitering at the bar for anyone who can take our order. I then spotted the waitress tucked at a hidden corner gorging on food. She saw me getting up to call for a server to take my order and only then she got off her butt and rushed over to take the order. After placing order, we waited and waited and waited again...40 minutes pass and now I'm about to go ballistic. I marched over to the hostess and demanded to see the manager. Manager comes and starts arguing with me after I complained that we've been made to wait to place order then even longer for food to come. Not once did anyone come and tell us ot would be a wait or if we needed anything while waiting. Manager gets defensive and says he witnessed the waitress taking my order so I have no right to make this claim. Then he says food not ready and have to wait longer and yelling at me no less. I told him is this the way he treats his customers and he screams back at me that all his customers are happy and treated well. And to rub it in. Suddenly he decides to greet everyone walking through the door while he did nothing but sit on his fat ass prior. I decided not to continue the argument as the food finally came and we were starving by then. We are as fast as we could to get out of the joint as we couldn't stomach the disgusting treatment and atmosphere. The food on top of it al was completely worse than supermarket grade quality and cooked from frozen TV dinner style entrees. I quickly paid the check and left without leaving a tip as they didn't deserve a penny after their abuse! They were lucky I even paid for the trashy barfy thing they call food. Had a fine breakfast at the Applejack Diner last Saturday morning. Hub, sis and I arrived at the diner at 9:00 am and had a short 10-15 minute wait for a booth. Once seated we all enjoyed classic diner fare. Sis had a grilled bagel and cream cheese, hub had bacon and scrambled eggs with home fries and wheat toast, and I had over-easy eggs with corned beef hash, home fries and rye toast. All were cooked to perfection and served by an efficient and pleasant waiter. Prices were reasonable, service was swift, food was good. Location was great in relation to our hotel. While looking for the famed Carnegie deli, before I realized they were forever closed, I found this NY diner. I needed my NY cheesecake fix, and this establishment did not disappoint. All their pastries are housemade, because I had to inquire after tasting that cheesecake! I am born and raised in NY, so when I come back I need bagels, cheesecake and pizza. We did not have a very pleasant experience with our meal at this diner. I give credit where credit is due, but unfortunately I can't do that in this instance. We ordered a cappuccino and a latte with two breakfasts, French toast with Canadian bacon and eggs Benedict Florentine. There was nothing pleasant about the meal. The staff were extremely rude and spoke to each other in front of me in a different language obviously talking about me including pointing. Then when I went to pay the credit card machine was turned around so I could add a tip and then the machine prompts me to enter and email or phone number to get my receipt and the guy at the cash register yells at me and yanks the credit card machine away saying I was messing up his machine. If you want a place that is open late to serve you hairy soup, lipstick water glasses, and rude service then you have found the right place. Now I'm not the type of person to give 1 star and write a negative review, but this place deserves it. After 6 months ago from eating here I am still disgusted with what things happened that night. A bunch of my friends and I decided to grab something to eat after a night in the city. So we picked Applejack Diner because it was quiet and close by. Walking in we were greeted and lead to a table with menu's. Pushing 20 minutes later there is not a single server in the place. We finally had to get up and find a server so we could get water. 5 minutes later a server comes with a tray of waters. As we grab our glasses of water I noticed something on two of the glasses, bright red lipstick marks. The cups had not been washed from the previous customers that used them, nor were we handed straws for our drinks. A few minutes after that we ordered our food, which came very quickly compared to the service that we were given to get water. I ordered the matzo ball soup. I had never had that type of soup before, and was very excited to try it. The soup smelled delicious and looked great. After taking a few sips and eating a few bites of this delicious soup something caught my eye. There was a dark long hair floating around in my soup. As disgusted as I was I pulled it out, then I noticed another hair in my soup. That was when I lost my appetite completely. What made matters worse in this situation is the fact that the servers were not nice about anything. We asked for straws and half of the paper packaged straws were soaked in beer. We were the only people in this quiet place yet they never once checked up on us. Plus they would make rude comments to my friends while they were ordering. Of all the places I have traveled to and eaten at this one will always be in my memory. This is because it is the worst place I have ever been to. I am judging this from the categories of service, cleanliness, and food. Sadly 2 of the 3 failed majorly. It's bright and cheerful looking with an upgraded store front. The food on the plates looks generous and colorful. Don't be fooled. We had a late breakfast, Eggs Benedict and an omelet. We both remarked about how completely tasteless the food was. Crispy looking home fries with onions, bland! Eggs Benedict, the sauce was lumpy, cool and congealed. The muffin soggy and not toasted. While looking at the menu, a few waiters were acting impatient with us (watching us from the door and circling around us). This made for an uncomfortable environment from the start. My friend and I were obviously newcomers, but that didn't stop the servers from welcoming us kindly. My friend and I quickly slid into a booth and waited for the waitress to bring us water and the menus. Looking over the menus, it becomes increasingly evident that there is nothing special about this diner. The prices are a little more expensive than the diners in Queens, but a little cheaper than other diners I've been to in Manhattan ... not that I've been to THAT many, though. After looking over the menu, I resorted to ordering a Fried Chicken basket, while my friend ordered a Vegetarian Panini. Although the service was kind of slow, the food that came out was kind of worth the wait. I might only be saying that because in retrospect, I was extremely hungry, What I do know, for a fact though, is that the food was freshly made (as it should be in all places) and that my Fried Chicken was sweet. It wasn't a sickening, overwhelming sweetness, but a type of sweetness that just sneaks into your mouth and settles there after a few bites. It was a subtle surprise, but not a terrible one.
