Arbuckle a very high quality cafeteria, and the best place to eat on Stanford campus. It's located on the business school campus, and has funny tacky names for each food station ("Foreign Exchange", "Market Mix", "Liquid Assets" is the drinks station lol). The menu at the ~5 stations changes every day, so there are always new delicious options to try. There's also great gourmet pizza and some self-serve salad and sandwich stations. They have great outdoor seating to chill with friends or have a quick meeting. One con: It's sort of stingy for the price that refills from the self-serve soda fountain aren't free, like they are at pretty much every other restaurant I've ever been to. read more

Arbuckle is definitely one of the best places to eat on Stanford's campus. There are a lot of options that change daily using higher-quality ingredients than most other places on campus. It's the only cafe at Stanford operated by Bon Appetit, which also operates a lot of cafeterias for the big-name Silicon Valley companies (ie Google, LinkedIn). You can find the daily menu online to make a game plan before going, or just show up and see what looks good. A lot of the food stations now serve "small" sizes which I've found to usually be perfectly filling for lunch, and they're a total steal at only $5.35. Most of the hot food stations also offer great vegetarian options, so there's always a lot to choose from for me. If all else fails, people rave about the salad bar and all of the available & fresh ingredients. It's usually pretty crowded here at lunch, but you should be able to make it in and out pretty quickly. I really like the atmosphere of the large dining area with doors that open all around when the weather is nice. read more

If you're a regular attendee and enjoy Mexican food, they have excellent nachos on most Fridays. (Every once in a while, they have tacos or tostadas instead, which are great too.) They rotate the meat available (beef, pork, turkey, chicken) and offer vegan toppings as well. (I often ask for half & half meat & veggies.) Chips are house-made and unsalted -- a big plus, since all other ingredients are (lightly) salted. The cheese sauce is house-made also and I must confess, it's the best I've ever had and I've lived in CA all my life. Servings are generous (as with all their offerings) and other toppings are great: guacamole, sour cream, house-made salsas (red and/or green) and lettuce, added as you please. Try them sometime. The prices are outrageous. There are no nutritional values listed. Portions are small and skimp on protein. The salad bar is constantly running out of things -- they're pretty much always out of chicken. The seating area is always messy, with garbage left sitting on the tables for long periods of time. Condiments, utensils, water fountains, tray pickups, tray drop offs, etc. are all laid out in very inconvenient ways. Lines are extremely long during peak hours. They don't seem to have appropriate staffing, preparation, and processes to deal with these very predictable customer patterns, which is amazing given that this cafe is run by a business school. Some food items require complicated order forms which are thrown into messy piles and handled at random. They give out annoying punch/discount cards which earn you a $10 discount after ~20 meal purchase. It's very frustrating to have to carry this flimsy paper card around and pull it out, over and over, and it slows down the long lines. This discount system is essentially a tax on everyone but the most devoted deal-seekers / card carriers among us. There is a coffee shop located in the rear of the cafe. Good luck finding someone who mans it. It is almost always empty. You usually have to call someone from another place to tend to the station. The whole ordeal takes several minutes. I've pretty much given up, and so have most other Arbuckle patrons. On Thursdays, they have outdoor barbecues. Strangely, you have to go inside, wait in line once to obtain a paper voucher, then go outside, and wait in once more to obtain your food. Surely, in Silicon Valley, at Stanford, there are some mobile technologies that can better handle this. On the positive side, I will say that the look-and-feel of the place is very nice. Arbuckle is spacious with high ceilings and abundant indoor and outdoor seating. The location is fantastic. read more

Relative to your other options, this isn't expensive and they have a variety of stations inside producing a unique variety of options every day. This review and their rating should be interpreted in the context of other dining options on Stanford's campus. This is by far the best place to eat in terms of value, taste, diversity of options, freshness, and location. In terms of value, the campus offers options such as the dining halls, which are great value for students but the options are pretty mediocre and get boring really quickly; there's Subway/Panda Express in Tresidder which are what you'd expect...there's Nexus cafe, which attempts to be what Arbuckle is, but their options fall short in terms of quality and flavor. There's Coupa Cafe, which is by far the worst bang for your buck, with the added benefit of tasting unbelievably bland. Enter Arbuckle. Located in the GSB, Arbuckle has great breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that cater to a number of diets e.g. vegan, gluten-free, halal etc. They even indicate farm-to-fork and seafood options on their menu. Better yet, they offer small-sized and regular-sized portions so you have the option of getting something lighter as a snack in between meals. There are a few stations (with pretty gimmicky business-related names...) that rotate every day. Usually, each station will have an option with meat and a meat substitute such as tofu or paneer. There's always a soup, a few hot dishes, a salad bar, and sushi. I've tried something from all the stations apart from the sushi, which I've heard is hit or miss but can't comment on. Prices are very reasonable and taste is much, MUCH better than other options you can find on campus. Trust me! Seating area is spacious and with lots and lots of natural light and some outlets for those wanting to get some work done. It's worth mentioning that the cafe is run by Bon Appetit, which provides on-site dining options for universities and even some tech companies in the area, and they're highly regarded for their efforts to buy locally and sustainably. You really can't go wrong with your choice to eat here. At the very least, you'll get a great view of the business school. P.S. you can look up the menu online for the week and can even filter by dietary preferences. read more

Why is there chocolate in the granola today? I guess a little chocolate in the morning never killed anyone. Ample variety through the day - breakfast, lunch and in between. DIY Sandwich bar and excellent salad bar. Hot bar (salads, pizza, pasta, grill - all the standard stations with specials rotating throughout the week - mexican, sushi etc) Coffee bar with pastries and plenty of grab-n-go salads/sushi/sandwiches/snacks. Frozen yogurt, while its presence is exciting, always disappoints. Toppings are stale-ish and it isn't always frozen properly. Le sigh. Loads of indoor/outdoor seating and a nice little "green" surcharge on your to-go containers. Other than that, plenty of B-school eye candy, if it were such a thing. read more

Back in 1999/2000, my startup company was getting funded by angel investors, the main one a Stanford MBA. He was a nice guy but changed his mind every week about how the company should go and what direction we should take. Literally, every Monday meeting was "we have been thinking and we are going to change things up a little for the time being." You could see pretty quickly that he was more interested in building a big company fast to show to the rest of his investor buddies than to play it smart and grow things slowly like other smarter companies did. He also wouldn't listen to anyone because he thought he was smarter than everyone else. Not a good combination for success. That was also very frustrating and demoralizing to everyone but when you sell out to the big money, you all have to do what the big money says. Lesson learned, never sell out again to anyone and run your own business, collect all the money for yourself and stay independent. But the great thing about him was that we got to go to Stanford GSB all the time to recruit students and they ate at Arbuckle Cafe (an underground eaterie below the GSB building). Arbuckle has great food, excellent burritos and huge, cheap salads. Subsidized by google, yahoo and nike probably. So if you are ever in the area and park on campus, head on over to Arbuckle and listen in to all of the grand plans of the brilliant graduate students. You might luck out and get in on the ground floor of the next big thing. read more

This is the best dining on campus right now. Selection is amazing- there are usually a half dozen hot dishes, a great salad bar, soups, bulk candy, ice cream. What else could you want? Prices are reasonable for the area- you can get a slice of pizza for $3.50. I got a cheeseburger with fries, a coke, and some bulk candy (what can I say, I'm a health nut) for less than $10. All that being said, it is still a cafeteria- mass produced items left under heat lamps can only be so good. But it is about as good as it can be for what it is. Stick to the made-to-order items or the salad bar and you can't go wrong. read more

Love the new Arbuckle! What an improvement. After three visits, I'm definitely a fan. I've never seen a cafeteria with such style, selection, or quality. The food is super yummy and there's something for everyone. I've tried a few of the pasta dishes, the pizza, and one of the daily mixed salad specials. The setting is beautiful with ample seating and light. Yes, it's a little pricey, but what else doyou expect at the Stanford GSB? My only complaint is that the new Arbuckle doesn't have a fraction of the outlets of the old cafe (maybe they didn't intend this as a working space?) and most of the doors only open from the inside. Make sure you check out the newly installed art piece to the left of the cafe - it's brightly colored and it moves, so it's hard to miss. And gorgeous! read more

Arbuckle Cafe almost single-handedly ruined my experience at Stanford Business School. The food is legitimately more expensive than any comparable lunch place I've ever been too, but then again, MBAs as a lot are generally willing to overpay for things. I just love the wit in this Stanford GSB cafeteria. Five stars for marketing genius, four stars for food, and three stars for layout. Can you beat names for food stations like "hot commodities" (warm sides), "free market grill" (sandwiches), "press release" (warm entrees), "stock exchange" (soups), "foreign exchange" (global station), and "market mix" (salads)? Being in NorCal, it is only appropriate that this cafe exemplifies healthy, organic, farm-to-table Californian cuisine. Items are labeled as "farm to fork", "vegetarian", "gluten-free", "seafood watch", and "for your well-being". My well-being might be better if the prices were lower, but I can't complain about the quality of ingredients compared to most other business school cafes (if they even exist). The layout of the cafe was a bit inefficient, though. For example, the coffee station was tucked at the very back corner so that students would have to walk way in, causing traffic jams and collisions on their way out to the cash registers. The seating area is quite nice - fishbowl that i-bankers are used to. Go there on a nice sunny day and watch the fish swim.... read more

I come here often for lunch in between classes, and am pretty happy with the quality and variety of the food. It is overpriced, but then again, you're paying for convenience and quality ingredients. I've found that the daily specials (2-3 options every day) which range from $8-9 can be a hit or miss. But at least they have sample entrees on display so that you can get an idea of what it looks like. My favorite recurring specials include Indian food (butter chicken plate) and seafood jambalaya. I'm not as big of a fan of the fish and Thai entrees. And they always have a vegetarian version! When I'm not feeling the daily specials, their thin crust pizzas never disappoint! And at $3.25 each, they're probably the cheapest option here. They also have a great salad bar, with a huge variety of toppings! You make your own salad, and they charge by bowl size. Quick tip if you really want to get your money's worth: stack your bowl high, and then grab a plate as well so you can pour your salad out and actually mix it before you eat. A new building for the GSB and a brand new Arbuckle. Still has the items of the old cafe but a much larger location allows them to offer new items and more variety. They now serve hot breakfast made to order, burgers, pizza and usually a design your own pasta station. The cons: - $0.25 on the spot for a to-go container - prices on everything have gone up about 30% - a much larger space means people tend to stand wherever they want to talk/ponder their lunch choices/more or less just be in someone's way - the prices of the make your own salad are ridic. $5 for a small salad...and I MEAN SMALL. - no hot breakfast during the summer - Closes early on Fridays in summer The Pros - Love the variety - Longer hours in general (just not in the summer) - Better seating inside - the outdoor seating is wonderful and includes loungers - the checkout lanes are easier to maneuver read more

Often crowded, but nice seating and plenty of outdoor seating. Quite nice when the weather is good. The sushi is pretty good. Nice selection of drinks, including aguas frescas. The one time they had gazpacho it was really good. They seem to run out of items...this has happened at the grill, the special entree section, and the sushi bar respectively during the five or so times I've been here. The salad bar is not as good as the old GSB. They try to be too fancy and end up ignoring a lot of the basic ingredients people like in their salads. Like different kinds of lettuce and maybe some cucumbers. It's also not restocked fast enough, so things like cherry tomatoes tend to run out. They also have very weird pizza toppings. There was one with beets? Eh, overall I'd recommend going to Nexus instead if you have time. I miss the old GSB with the tasty brie/pear/ham panini and great and affordable salad bar. Now I'd have to go all the way across campus if I wanted to build myself a decent salad. Guess I'll just pack lunch when I want salad. read more

This is definitely one of the better places to eat on campus. While they are a bit pricier than other options, they more than make up for it with quality and diversity of options. You do have to be choosy in what you get; the pizzas are very overpriced, but the burgers are decent. I'd recommend a specific dish, but they rotate every day! This place is amazing! I work near Forbe's Cafe and Coupa Cafe and compared to those two - this place is the bee's knees! I had a salad off the salad bar and the choices on the bar are extensive, fresh, and delicious. You are also allowed to add items form the make your own sandwich bar to your salad which means pesto! It was delicious and incredibly affordable. I also had a cup of the clam chowder and it was pretty good. I prefer a bit thicker for clam chowder, but the flavor was there and I enjoyed the complimentary crackers. I got a perfectly filling lunch for only $11! It is so much more affordable than other cafes on campus with better options! Will definitely return. read more

I have come here on various occasions for work and had salads the other 2 times. This time, I decided to be adventurous and go for the Hawaiian plate special from the grill. The plate consisted of Kahlua pork (didn't even taste like Kahlua), rice, napa cabbage with some teriyaki sauce and macaroni salad for $9. When I got home and was eating dinner, I had these sharp pains in my stomach and I think I got food poisoning from the macaroni salad. I spent the following day in bed with sharp pains (kinda like cramps) in my abdomen area. I can't think of anything else I ate that would've triggered such a bad experience. From now on, I'm sticking to just salad or, going elsewhere on campus like the Alumni center! read more
