Au Cheval absolutely lived up to the hype. We were quoted a 45-minute wait, and it ended up being almost exactly 45 minutes, which gave us time to explore the area. Once our table was ready, we were seated right away. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so seating is limited and it can get crowded, but it honestly adds to the lively atmosphere. From the moment we sat down, our server was amazing. He was incredibly attentive, walked us through the menu, and explained that the "single" cheeseburger is actually a double patty, while the "double" is actually a triple. He also recommended ordering the bone marrow and saving the jam that comes with it to spread on the burger, a little "Au Cheval hack" that many regulars apparently swear by. We tried it, and it made the burger even more flavorful. I also highly recommend adding the fried egg to the burger. It gave it a rich, creamy texture that brought everything together perfectly. Despite being such a simple burger, the quality of the ingredients and the balance of flavors made it one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. The service from everyone: the host stand to our server was exceptional. And while I didn't order the wings, several tables around us did, and they looked and smelled incredible. They're definitely on my list for my next visit. I'll absolutely be back.
Au Cheval is likely the most coveted restaurant destination for out-of-towners. "Best Burger" "it's so delicious with the egg" "I'm glad you're ending your trip with Au Cheval". I'd like to throw in my own quote into the gauntlet: "it's ok". It sounds harsh but Our burger patty was noticeably dry. The bread... was also dry. The egg and bacon add-ons were good but as a whole, the burger was missing the core aspect. The bread being dry I can justify by knowing that Au Cheval makes it a point to make everything gluten-free (or so someone told me). I think that's cool but not necessarily what I came looking for. I actually noticed prior to our trip from photos that the buns looked noticeably arid but I gave them no heed because of all of the praise. And I can give them the benefit of the doubt that we were there on a Sunday night, so potentially not the most quality inventory (although I personally don't think that's a great excuse). The service and the ambiance were on point! If you're wondering if there's a required attire (no shorts or flip flops) I wouldn't fret, the atmosphere is a lot more casual despite self-describing as an "intimate" setting. It's definitely more intimate than a normal burger restaurant, with dim lighting and isolated booths but what you're wearing isn't going to dictate how other guests and staff feel. I would cover up anyways just cause there was ac running. I told my friend who moved from Nyc to Chicago and he said he felt the same. And one of our couple friends were surprised to hear the patty being dry, so... off day?
Au Cheval is a rusty diner that serves a good burger. What makes their burgers unique is the peppered bacon: it's hand-cut in-house and is as thick as their burger patties. Their "single" cheeseburger is actually a double cheeseburger, and their "double" cheeseburger is actually a triple -- makes no sense, but that is their naming convention. Bacon is extra. Fried egg is extra. Even fries is extra. I got a "double" cheeseburger + bacon + fries and it ended up being $40, which is a lot for burger and fries (1 star off). I enjoyed my bacon burger, but probably would hit another delicious and heart attack-inducing burger joint next time given the hefty price tag here. Need to save enough money for that cardiac bypass.
Au Cheval lives up to the hype. They only cooked the burger one way and I would say it's probably something along the lines of a medium. The single is actually a double patty burger and a double is actually a triple patty burger I went with the double and added the egg and the bacon, which I understand is the most classic. I was afraid the bacon would be a little tough, but he was absolutely not. He was closer to pork belly and just pulled apart easily. The hashbrowns were a bit salty for my taste, but were perfectly crispy and a little cheesy it seemed. Keylime was very good too. If I were to return, I would do the burger, the same get the Keylime and maybe try a different side. For sure a return.
No good vegan options :( I got the green salad and added avocado (paid extra just for 30% of an avocado) and extra dressing. Overpriced salad for sure. Also the outdoor seating was horrible. No umbrellas so we were melting under the hot sun the whole time. My friends enjoyed the fries but said the burger lacked veggies.
We were heavily recommended this place by a friend and boy it was worth it. We showed up on a Sunday around noon, only had a 45min wait, which was not bad at all compared to our original attempt on Friday night! We were seated near where I could watch the line work, which I appreciated as someone in the food industry. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, explaining the quirks of the menu as well as his own suggestions for us to try. The burgers themselves were amazing. Easily in my top 5 favorite restaurant style burgers of all time. The tender peppered bacon is the perfect touch for these burgers. If you can withstand the wait, it's truly a wonderful time at Au Cheval.
It's burger time! I was so excited to come experience the Au Cheval burger. I must tell you, I love burgers, but I love big juicy flavorful burgers. The patties here, are very thin. They put a double patty, with the delicious caramelized, bacon and egg. It makes up for the tiny little patties that you experience with your burger. The service is outstanding. I'm gonna tell you, quick and very efficient. I really wanted to like these thin, tiny patties, but I just couldn't. However... I always like me some skin on french fries.
Au Cheval does not need anymore positive reviews and is a classic staple of Chicago, and one of my favorite burgers of all time. You will need to either come off hours for a shorter wait, or be prepared to wait for several hours. It's nice that you can be texted when your table is ready, because there are so many other restaurants and bars you can kill time at before coming back for your beloved burger. A warning that the standard burger already comes with two patties, so if you get an extra patty it is a total of 3. Definitely add the delicious thick cut peppered bacon to the burger (and I am not even usually a bacon person), and the egg if you want a bit of extra goo. We've also tried the fried chicken which was delicious, but if your mind is set on just burger, I'd recommend sticking to that. If you are with a small group that wants a bit of variety and is willing to share burgers, I'd recommend adding the chicken.
Enjoyed lunch here when we touched down in Chicago. The restaurant was quite busy, which is always a good sign. The inside of the restaurant is a bit compact, but super friendly. Great music was playing the entire time, which had me rocking in my seat. Our server was super nice and helpful with the menu. We went for the single cheeseburger and the bologna sandwich. Both were good, but the burger waa wAaay better in my opinion. A must try, and you only need a single. We added bacon, with the egg, Soo good. I took off one star because I think the burger is a bit pricey, and the bologna wasn't all that. Otherwise this place was legit and I'd definitely return.
Au Cheval was solid overall. The burger absolutely lived up to the hype, and the fries and root beer were great as well. I deducted a star because of the service. Our waitress forgot to put in our appetizer order, which is understandable and mistakes happen. After we finished our burgers, she brought us our check. We kindly reminded her that we were still waiting on our chicken to come out. She apologized and said she would bring us an order of chicken to go. She comped the chicken, which I appreciated. However, as tourists, we were looking forward to enjoying the full meal in the restaurant. Since there were several open tables at the time, it felt a little strange to be encouraged toward takeout instead of being able to stay and enjoy the appetizer there. Having to walk to the hotel with the chicken also noticeably affected the quality and overall experience. Overall, the food was great, but the service experience kept it from being a five-star visit.
Really solid burger. Would give the burger a 4.4 out of 5. It can get busy so you can reserve for approx 2.50 a person. Or you can go off peak around 430 and there is a short wait on weekdays. We ordered single cheeseburger, but keep in mind it comes with two patties. The thick cut bacon is an additional 6.99. You can also add a fried egg. We opted not to get the egg as it can get messy. The burger is a hearty, meaty burger especially with the bacon. It is for burger purists who want meat, bread, and cheese. There are a few toppings and sauce inside but it gets overshadowed with each meaty bite. The meat patties are perfectly cooked and the bun is sturdy enough to hold up to the meat and toppings without falling apart. The side pickle is a must have and is included because you will need some acid to cut through the meatiness of the burger. It was worth it because we did not wait very long. However if I had to wait an hour or two i would say come back another time. We did not try the bone marrow which is what seems to be very popular here but given the order of 4 hamburgers and fries we knew it would be too much food for a group of 4. Service was great. Interior was great. My only request is that the music be turned down just a little bit because it is quite loud inside.
One of my students, who was from Chicago, highly recommended Au Cheval to me. He actually recommended it for their cocktails being that it was one of the best places he's had a bourbon drink. After doing my own research I found that it was recognized as having one of the best burgers in America. For that alone I had to try the place. Au Cheval was my first stop after flying into Midway. I knew that the place didn't take reservations, so I gambled with the fact that I was dropping by on a Monday night. No way that the place would be busy. Boy, was I wrong. I arrived around 7:30pm and the place was packed. I put myself on the waitlist and thankfully they add you to an automated system where you get texted when your seat is almost ready. I went to the bar next door thinking I was going to be there for a while, but I really only waited for 15-20 minutes. When I checked in, one of the front desk hostesses kindly offered to hold my luggage for me. They must get that a lot, because they have a whole ticketed coat check system. I had a seat at the bar where service was great and vibes were everything. I was feeling the old school hip hop instrumentals while waiting shortly for my food and drink. My server was friendly and helped to offer modifications that worked to my dietary preferences. I don't eat pork, which I understood was a very popular add-on to the burger, so he suggested I try it with foie gras as the next best thing. I got a single cheeseburger (comes with 2 patties) and added a sunny side egg and foie gras. I thought the burger was delicious. It was so flavorful and well seasoned, and the egg and foie gras gave the burger extra richness. The burger sans add-ons was $30, so it came out to ~$44 with everything. Was it really worth that price? Debatable. That said, I would still recommend this place and want to try their chilaquiles!

Where to begin? I have wanted to try Au Cheval since moving here 9 years ago, and I finally got the chance today. Amid rumors it would take 4 hours to be seated, I was pleasantly surprised the wait was only 1 hour. I came here after a few weeks effort to find the best hamburger in Chicago. Of course, everyone says it's Au Cheval, but I was a skeptic... Their menu has a great selection of cocktails and craft beers to start. They also have a nice list of appetizers. We chose the bone marrow, and it was fantastic! A perfect appetizer and came out quickly. The hamburger selection is fairly straightforward - you have the option of a single (which is a double patty) and double (which is a triple patty), and you can add thick bacon and/or a fried egg. I highly recommend you do both toppings. It was a divine experience and completely lived up to the hype. The bacon was thick, sweet, and savory, and the egg was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The patties and bun were excellent. We also ordered fries on the side with aioli sauce (a la carts menu), and they were delightful! I'm completely satisfied with the experience and am so glad I finally made the trek here. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. Be prepared to spend around $30 per burger and then add on if you want appetizers, sides, and drinks. I highly recommend this place and hope to come back! read more
For all my years in Chicago it's no wonder this is my first time making it to a seat in Au Cheval. It is a deceiving small restaurant which was unexpected with the gigantic reputation that precedes it. But the size only added to the intimate, cosy ambiance. The burger was excellent, the other reviews aren't kidding it really is one of* the best burgers in the city. Be warned the single is a double and the double is a triple so be prepared when ordering. The bacon is a MUST it's peppery and sweet and was a noticeable addition and worth the $6. I'm not an egg on burger gal so I could go without that on both the fries and burger but it certainly wasn't a bad addition. The draft rootbeer was a fun treat too. If you're coming here with a group of more than 6, go somewhere else or sit as two groups bc unless you're going at an off time you're going to be waiting for hours. Regardless be prepared for some kind of wait but luckily Randolph street has so many fun spots you can easily kill time with a drink nearby. I can't say I'll be back any time soon just because getting a seat is an extreme sport but I do feel like I can now give valid burger opinions in the city now that I've had this one. read more
Finally got to try au cheval! Small place, no reservations! Saturday we tried at night it was a 3-4 hour wait at 8pm. Sunday we went at 3:30 and it was only 1 hour wait! Everything was made super fast, we were in and out in 35 minutes. I got the single burger and fries. Loved the fries, I asked for a garlic aioli on the side, this was a perfect addition! Burger was good, to me nothing special. $17 for a burger is pretty pricey. Glad I checked it out! read more
I have been hearing rave reviews from friends and coworkers about Au Chevel so my boyfriend and I decided to see what the hype was.....and we were absolutely blown away. This is by far the best burger place I think I've been too. The burgers are absolutely amazing, the fries are perfect, the bone marrow tasted incredible and the drinks were strong. I don't have a single complaint about this place. The service was fast and everyone working had such a great hustle even with it packed. We sat up at the bar and could see how hard every employee was working to make the food look at taste delicious, everyone had a part and you could tell they all did it well. The gourmet burger game is pretty strong in Chicago. If you like thick cut bacon I think Au Cheval edges out the others. No reservations allowed, waitlist only. Expect 1-2hr wait with a group during regular hours, 15-20min wait if solo. read more

Au Cheval has been on my list forever, so I was super excited to try it today. Thankfully it wasn't too busy today so we were seated without a wait. The ambiance is great - the interior is dark and moody. We sat at the counter which was basically a front row seat to the kitchen. It's fun to watch how efficient they are. Given my friends' recommendations, I ordered the simple traditional burger with bacon ($21.98); it's basically a double meat burger. The meat is super juicy and the sauce is absolutely delicious. But for the price of $22 for the burger, I didn't think it was THAT great or special. I personally felt that the burgers were overhyped for me. Regardless, I'm glad that I got to try it! First night in Chicago and Au Cheval was the chosen one for dinner. My boyfriend really wanted me to try Au Cheval out! When we arrived the place was packed and was told the wait would be an hour plus. We didn't mind since we hung out at the bar next door, but oh my the wait was definitely super long and thankfully when we went back to check it was finally our turn. I would definitely recommend coming during the day or earlier for dinner because you will be waiting an hour or more! We were seated at the booth which is kinda cool because you can see the burgers and drinks getting made. I ordered a single cheese burger with an egg and my boyfriend got a double cheese burger with an egg and bacon. We shared a side of fries. The food came out shortly and we GRUBBED. We were so hungry! The burgers were delicious and so juicy. When they say single it really is a double and so on. It will definitely fill you up. The fries were crispy and come with their house sauce (I believe). I can't say anything bad! I feel like I ate in silence because I was really enjoying my food. I love how they give you a long slice of pickle too!! This place is a must and I would highly recommend. Did I walk & eat my way through Chicago, yes, yes I did. It's hard work catching up with my old spots and trying out new ones! As you walk up to Au Cheval, it's a mood. The hostess told me that I would get a text in an hour for my table. I literally walked an hour to eat there so I was thinking it better be good and yes, I was waiting. When I got the text an hour later, I did a little speed walk as they told me I had 10 mins to make it back. Again, I was thinking...this better be amazing. As soon as you walk in, you will be dancing not only from the sight of the delicious eats that have been skillfully orchestrated but also because of the music. It was like watching movie as the chef was directing the cooks & sous chefs. They all were a vibe. The Chef was like a composer as he called out the orders. If you sit at the bar, you can sit back and take it all in from the heating of the gravy boats, to the jumping fryers, to the sizzling burgers. Nothing like listening to music and the sound and smells of cooking food. The burgers are juicy and flavorful, the cheese was cheesing, and the bacon and egg really just made it chef's kiss. The textures and the flavors combined with the smells, and visually stunning team work and music will have you and your tase buds dancing. Do I regret eating and walking my way through Chicago? Not one single bit because it led me to my now favorite restaurant in the city; Au Cheval. TIPS: Sit at the bar; best seats in the house. Don't come here with anyone who is not able to just dig in...you can split it (don't try that with me though...hahahaha...) Trust me, you have to get your burger with BACON & EGG. Don't ask for the egg a certain way...just take it and anything you order straight like the chef meant for it to be. It is magical. read more

WOW, WOW and WOW!!!!! whole new playing field for burgers! Au Cheval at this point is a Chicago Burger staple. For a basic burger it's definitely in top 10 in the city. I've been here maybe 8 times at this point. I always get the double cheeseburger with the egg and the thick cut bacon and fries. Every time It's cooked perfectly and it's always juicy, egg cooked perfect every time. I'm posting multiple pictures just to show you consistency so accurate. Oh my goodness it's mouth watering amazing! I mean just look at the pictures! i've also had the chicken wings, which were phenomenal. They definitely have a system down in the kitchen that makes the food super consistent and I love that, makes you wanna come back. Service was great we got chefs table seating so we were able to watch everything be prepared. It is as good as people say. Truly. The bacon is a must as well! No reservations, so if it's a weekend, be prepared to wait. However there's lots to do around! If you're looking to eat here, drop your name on the waitlist early and be prepared to wait! I came on a Saturday at 2pm and there was still an hour wait for 2 people at the counter. The place is small but upscale cozy. A nice touch was the coat hangers under the seats at the counter to keep bags and coats out of the way, and seats at the counter meant I could see the cooking in action. The servers were incredibly nice and attentive - definitely felt welcomed at this restaurant. I also got a kick out of having my root beer in a wine glass too (on tap, pretty good root beer as well). The single cheeseburger with bacon and egg is apparently the signature dish, but to me the real star of this place is their bone marrow. The bone marrow was fatty and rich, the marmalade paired nicely with the bone marrow by adding layered flavor and a bit of sweetness to cut the fat. It was absolutely amazing on the thick, buttery toast. This is the reason I would come back again and again to this place and made it worth the wait. read more

According to chat GPT, Au Cheval is French for "on horseback". Contrary to popular belief, I've never ridden a horse unless you count my Hyundai sonata. However, after eating here I have to imagine riding horses must be a special moment for a horse and its rider. That's how I felt taking my first bite into this burger, a horse letting the burger steer me in the direction of serenity. Then I got to wash it down with the best root beer I've ever had. Wow, what a musical for my tastebuds. Can't even explain how cool the ambience was. For someone that was eating by themselves, I never felt like I was alone. read more
I was staying in this area and literally every time we came by - this place was busy, especially for dinner! Crowded and full of people. Ended up getting pretty curious, and saw a few tiktoks that mentioned this place was one of the best burger places in Chicago so decided to give it a try and it didn't disappoint! If you're coming here and don't want to deal with the crowds- come during the day!! If you go during dinner time it will be busy and super crowded, one night when we were walking back to the place we were staying the wait was 2 hours!!! Service was great- the place had a really chill vibe and our server was really nice and accommodating to my family's requests. Au Cheval has the best burger I've ever had, hands down! It is first come first serve. Went on a Friday afternoon, around 2pm and there was 1 hour wait. It is a pretty small restaurant so it is expected to have a wait. Ordered: - Single Cheeseburger ($14.99) - FYI it comes with TWO meat patties. - Added egg ($2.99) and bacon ($6.99) - French Fries ($8.99) I sat at the counter, which is best for an experience as you get see all the cooks in action in the kitchen and all the food that comes out. So amazing!!! This place is known to have the best burger in Chicago. You have to get the egg and bacon on it... it's incredible. Fresh French fries with aoili topped it off. My boyfriend also ordered the chicken wings and said they were fabulous. I enjoyed the root beer float too. 10/10 experience as always at au cheval. Oh PS - expect to wait an hour +. Best to go there put your name on the list and go to nearby places for a drink or an appetizer. read more

Awesome burger I will say I think burgers are a type of food that are really type of the moment food not something that can be the best every time you go but something you crave at a given time. Finally got to try the burger here and it didn't disappoint, delicious, large and in charge but I wouldn't get agin or go out of my way to come back to or wait in line for but I am glad I got to try the legendary burger. read more

The burger here is good but it's not like the best burger in the world where I would wait hours for. Luckily got seated immediately on a Monday for lunch. Get the burger with an egg on top it makes it yummier. I would pass on the bacon though it was okay. I told my server to put an egg on mine but he misunderstood and put bacon on my burger instead sigh. He should've just had the chef make me a fried egg so I ended up eating half of my friend's burger with the egg which was much tastier. Their bread & butter pickles are really good and so are the fries with garlic aioli. I personally would prefer to have a single patty on my burger vs a double patty (fyi a single cheeseburger = 2 patties) not sure why they do it like that. Service was attentive though. read more

I can't lie; love this place. Got the famous double patty burger topped with sunny side up egg and thick cut bacon. Absolutely magical! I'd say I hate that it's almost a $30 burger, but I know I'd pay that price again as a tourist just to eat it again. Tried the Chimichangas which were not supposed to be good because we aren't in a Tex-Mex state, but it was solid. Came here during Lollapalooza weekend because everyone told us to try the best burgers in Chicago! You will not be disappointed. The size of the burger was massive and just the single burger could definitely feed two people. The patty was super juicy and I added an egg on top to mix the yolk with the sauce. If I was only rating the burger that I had, this place would be a 4/5. For some context, I'm a girl who likes to try a new restaurant every single time I go out. It's rare that I visit the same establishment by choice more than once, especially in today's economy where prices have become beyond justifiable. The fact that I would come back again by choice makes my rating a 5. For some more context, I usually do not eat beef, as that's the way I was raised and I have upheld this regimen by force of habit. I visited a couple months ago when I was with about five friends and luckily, we had a reservation. I don't really see how you could get seating without one. All of us were super excited and about half of us were first timers. I got the cheeseburger with the thick cut bacon and egg on it. This thing was massive and incredible - I was struggling to finish the last 1/3. The egg was perfect and runny. The meat was cooked perfectly as well. I honestly could have skipped the thick cut bacon, but I know some people swear by it. We also shared some fries amongst the table, and they were really yummy. Ambience is cozy and buzzy, pretty cramped so it can be hard to walk around and squeeze into a booth. Lighting is pretty dim, but it matches the vibes of the bar. How long is the wait in the evening?
It was about 35 min for a party of 4. But outside seating was available immediately.
What's the dress code? Thinking about dining in before a baseball game
No dress code, honestly. I was wearing a tank top and shorts and they seated me

You won't even need to do any of that...it's incredible as it comes. And no x 3
If I go on a Monday with a table of 7, what time should I get there for minimal wait?
My suggestion, put your name in anticipating a 1-2 hour wait, and then walk around the west Loop. Go to Levian cookies, etc..
Do you have any non beef items?
Yes. They have French fries and they also have chicken.
Does anyone know if their meat is kosher?
Not sure but, our waiter ASKED if we had any allergies to certain foods .
Is there a quiet bar near here?
Haymarket is a great option. It's not necessarily quiet but not super loud.
Which oil do they use to fry the fries? ETA: they use beef fat per the fry cook.

Since no reservations are taken what happens to guests during the wait period during the cold months? About how long would the wait be for a single guest dining alone midweek.... I will be in Chicago in early March !
There's a couple bars in the area, give them your number...go grab a couple of drinks and they'll text you when your spot is ready
Do they seat a party of 5 or more together?
We had a party of 8 and they just had us split up into groups of 4 in the booths. They could probably accommodate 8 at the tables but the wait will be very long
Is this restaurant okay for well-behaved children (8 and 14)?
it's kinda old school, a bit dark, low ceiling, I've ate inside once don't recall children, this was around 2pm on a weekday. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be OK, my opinion ....it's not a kid place. They have outdoor dining as well as… Read more
Do they take reservations? Note: answered my own question. they do not. called them and asked.
You have to go in person to be put on the list and they page you with two hours usually for seating.
Do fries come with the Single Burger or does that need to be purchased separately?
Everything is a la carte
Has the wait time gone down due to COVID? Have they started taking reservations online?
I don’t know. My friend was the one who picked up our order and he called in advance. My only suggestion is to either call in advance or possibly ordering online if you’re doing takeout.
Do they have outdoor seating?
Pre-Covid they did not have outdoor sitting. Now I'm not entirely sure if they've set something up for outdoor seating. I honestly couldn't imagine where they would seat anyone outside as it's in a busy intersection
