I was looking for a place in Marin County that was keto friendly. I read some great reviews here, but I also wanted to post this because I know it's really difficult to find a place that's truly keto. We had such a great experience, the owner greeted us at the door, walked us to our table, and showed us a fantastic menu. Then he came back, and asked me specifically "what do you want to eat?" I told him that I was keto, but I wanted something flavorful and no sugar, no carbs. He convinced me to add some zucchini and cauliflower, but he made a mix of steak and chicken for me that was unbelievably flavorful, moist and tender. It was specifically made to my requirements. I loved it! He told me that he will be thinking about my diet and that he has five other ideas that he can use and that I should come back soon, I can name my protein and he'll make other choices that can work in my diet. I thought this was just such a fun experience and it really felt like I ate something that I could not make it home. Thank you so much we will be back. read more

Yum, yum and yum. My friends love this place, and I tried it with them this evening finally..since I moved here a month ago. The owner is great, and the food is delicious. Great for vegetarians and they will make vegan and gluten free upon request. I had the chicken and pumpkin enchiladas. The samosas were fantastic, and the way they serve it is just the best. Everyone enjoyed it. The chai is also great. The menu is really cool. They have everything you might want. delicious looking grilled jumbo shrimp, even jerk chicken. I recently moved to the North Bay Area from San Francisco and have been trying out different restaurants. Avatar has become an immediate favorite! I have never experienced Punjabi fusion cuisine in all of my years living in San Francisco. What an amazing combination of flavors! I had the Kama Sutra (mild as I have a hard time with spice) and the flavor combination was so incredible I wish we could take the chef home with us! The dessert does not come with much description on the menu, but definitely order it. I regret ordering to share because I would prefer to eat it all myself (I won't ruin the surprise!). The food here is so good that I would probably put up with any level of service and atmosphere just to have it, but I have to say that the owner and staff are as great as the food! The restaurant is clean and well decorated with amazing black and white photography. We were greeted and seated by the owner, and he treated us like we had been going there for years. I came here last year for the first time after hearing about the pumpkin enchiladas. I was skeptical of this Indian/Mexican eatery in Sausalito, but I trusted my foodie friend who discovered this place. When we placed the order for the enchiladas (not on the menu), the owner told us it was going to be the best thing we've ever eaten. I was impressed with his bold statement. One year and multiple cravings later, I am back with the bf and we order the same thing in addition to the jerk chicken. The food is delicious and comes out from the kitchen piping hot. I especially enjoyed the sauce they use on the enchiladas; tamarind, curry and yogurt, spiced to perfection. I'm glad Sausalito has an eatery like this. Food-wise, certainly one of the best meals I've had. The owner (and our waiter) encouraged us to tell him what we wanted and that he would give us "the best meal we've ever had" or something along those lines. Okay, kinda cheesy but my friends had told me about this and they loved it so I went with it. I think I said something simple like "chicken and spicy, but not crazy-Indian-spicy." I believe I got the Jerk Chicken or something similar and assorted grilled vegetables on the side. Everything, even veggies, was incredibly well-done and delicious. He definitely didn't let me down. I was, however, disappointed with the overall experience because we felt rushed by the staff. We came at a fairly busy time (Saturday night) and everything happened too quickly. We were asked to order within a few minutes, I don't think I had even read the menu. Perhaps that was why he encouraged us to let him order for us, to speed us up. The food came out quickly as well, which is generally good, unless you actually feel like they are rushing you which we did, then it is annoying. My friends who had been there before noted that they were skipping little dessert mint endings or something along those lines which we had to ask to receive. We all ate reasonably quickly but the staff came over to our table a few times asking if he could clear out any plates. Also, while the owner definitely hit a home run with what he made for me, it seems like my friends were slightly disappointed. We were in and out of there in ~40 minutes (very fast) and they were treating us like we had been in there 2 hours. I hope to come back soon and give it another shot. The food was so good and I hope we just caught them on a "bad night" service-wise. This would be a definite 5-star for me if it wasn't for our poor service experience. read more

Nothing short of outstanding. Worthy of 6 stars or more! The owner was most charismatic. We barely sat down and had not even looked at the menu. He asked what we eat, you know vegan? dairy? and such. He simply took our menus away and said I'll have them make something special for you. I love that he did this. He knew it was our first time there. I was a little hesitant at first - I don't know exactly why. I love Indian food, I love Mexican food, but the combination - I wasn't so sure. But we just left and I was blown away. The owner is great, he said trust me, and I did. What a great combination of flavors. I actually at a bunch of veggies too, which was a surprise to my wife. I would have licked the plate clean but I was with my wife and she hates when I do that. :) I have to say this is the first time after I've eaten Indian food where I did not end up with a horrible stomach issue afterwards. Amazing food. Such an undiscovered gem.. Although it seems it has been there forever. The owner/chef was probably the most affable person we have ever met. Just made us feel at home. The best part was he just asked us to leave the choice of entrees to him.. and just brought out amazing dishes. One of the dishes was the punjabi enchiladas. The other dish was a risotto like dish with seasoned vegetables. The spices - a mix of indian/caribbean - were absolutely delicious!. The dessert - the lone dessert they serve was heavenly. Holy cow - I kinda forgot about this place! When I first moved to SF back in 1999, I worked in Sausalito for a year and ate at Avatar's at least a few times each month. I don't think anything can sum up "fusion" more than pumpkin curry enchiladas. They're sooo good! Nice to see Ashok is still firing on all cylinders at his tucked-away Sausalito eatery. Stopped in here, tx to Yelp, onour way to SF Exploratiorium yesterday (easy access & ample parking off the 101 in Sausalito). Although, worth noting that somehow on the Yelp phone app, Avatar's came up as a Mexican (vs Indian) venue. So, suffice it to say, not at all what we were expecting. HOWEVER, a very pleasant surprise. VERY friendly owners (especially kid friendly) and wonderful food. Especially enjoyed the side of herb green sauce (craving the next day). Husband and I shared the pumpkin lamb enchiladas (wow!) and the grilled curried chicken salad. Brilliant combination. Everything from the iced tea to the sides they offered us was lovely. Easily the best food in the North Bay...and best Indian restaurant in the bay area. All these years, I can't believe I've driven by and never knew what magic lies behind these doors. Bottom line: A unique and rare find. Authentic, close knit family-run restaurant, you will be treated like an old friend invited into their home. Charming, gracious, friendly staff-they will make whatever you want, off or on the menu. Get an appetizer- we loved the vegetarian samosas, and ask about their specials- I had the grilled lamb with mussels, prawns and mixed veggies on a bed of basmati with a delicious mango, passionfruit, mint sauce that was to die for. Next time I go I have my eye on the Jamaican jerk chicken---yes, they have that too. This is "ethnic fusion"- a mix of flavors and dishes inspired from Mexico, Jamaica, and India (they have traditional indian dishes too). As they say here, you will lick your plate clean, so don't expect to leave with leftovers but come back and often...it will warm your heart... and stomach. read more

Lived in Tiburon, CA for 18yrs prior to moving to Hawaii, and ate here frequently. Was in Sausalito and decided to see if the food was as I remembered it, and it was. We had the pumpkin/crab enchiladas that were excellent as well as an appetizer of the Black Tiger Prawns with a chutney sauce which were very good. We can't get this type of food in Hawaii, we are stuck with " Hawaii Fusion" food which everyone here does in some fashion. Ashkor is a great guy, made us feel very welcome and his wife came out of the kitchen to our table to make sure we enjoyed everything. Every time we are in the Bay Area I will return to this place. When I worked in Sausalito, I remember Steve Jobs coming into this place, just great food! read more

Service was 5 stars and food was 5 stars. We had our choices made on the menu but when we told the waiter we preferred to eat vegetarian, he took away our menus and asked us to trust him. We did and don't regret it. He brought out a pan-roasted veggies dish along with a couple of enchiladas. We thought the filling for the enchiladas was roasted pumpkin, but we were wrong -- even with multiple guesses. For your own reveal, go to Avatar's in Sausalito and see if they'll make it for you. We also tried the dessert (they may only have one). It was excellent. Some sort of ice cream cheesecake with marzipan and a fantastic crust. after my 3rd trip in 18 months, I am taking off 2 stars. The experience is the same every time. Ashok will come and follow the same routine. Ask you to ignore the menu and just tell him what you like. The first time, it was great. The second time he brought me the same plate. The 3rd time, I asked to get something different (I am vegetarian btw) and he runs out of ideas. I have no desire to go here now. I have gone 3 times each time with 2-3 other vegetarians. He has the same 3 vegetarian dishes and they haven't changed in forever. I am not going 50 miles again to eat the same stuff I have eaten 3 times. I know taking off 2 stars is tad-bit harsh, but come on Ashok and Kala and Saru, variety is the spice of life, change is the only constant, etc. etc.so do Avatar proud. read more

Hi Folks, Food was okay, but the service was horrible, and misleading. Never coming back and here is why: I walk in with my parents, and this man comes to us and seats us (whom I presume is the owner) 10 minutes in, he comes to ask us what we would like to eat, we tell him that this is our first time dining at this restaurant and asks what he recommends. He then begins to go on about how this is the best restaurant we will ever eat at, he takes our menu's away from us, call us his family, and assures us that he will give us the best dishes. and swears by if we do not like the food, the bill is on the house. Now keep in mind, whether or not we liked the food or not we would still pay. The food is served (by a different waiter), the Chaas was good, and the food was okay, nothing out of the ordinary to be honest. While dining, this man never came to us to ask if we liked the food and what are thoughts are. He never came to check up on us to see if we needed anything else. After having the main course, we were thinking of getting dessert, but before we could even get his attention, the same waiter who gave us our food, came back again and put the bill on table and walked away. WTF! I've never been treated with such horrible service and have never been so mislead and robbed at any type of business... Surprise, Surprise, I come to find out by another friend that this same guy told them the very same spiel (how they are family and he will order for them) and the service was just as bad as our experience. Anyways, if you ever go to this place, take everything he says with a grain of salt. read more

My wife and I came here after a bike ride from San Francisco to Sausalito. The owner is awesome! My wife told him she was vegetarian and he made the most delicious dish in the known world. I had prawn curry and it was ungodly good. Everything is tasty and extremely healthy right down to the roasted vegetables! Very friendly staff, and one of the best food experiences i can recall.
