During winter break before my boyfriend and I went home, we made a little trip on the ferry to Bainbridge Island. Traveling from Seattle, I was looking upon recommended restaurants on Bainbridge Island. Ba Sa was one of them. We stopped by the restaurant for lunch where we were quickly seated. We got outdoor seating near the heaters. We saw that many of the dishes were fusion Vietnamese dishes that were sort of elevated. We ordered the Sauté Beef Vermicelli (Bun Bo Nam Bo) and Curry Chicken. Despite it not being fully authentic both dishes were delicious and were pretty good portion sizes! The servers were nice and helpful whenever we needed anything and the heaters offered a cozy warm mess since it was so cold outside. I'm glad I tried out Ba Sa. read more

Stopped in to this nice comfortable place with a. Fairly large group of 7 of us so that may have put a bit of. Strain on them on a Saturday afternoon. Maybe due to that I just wasn't much of a fan. Someone in the group has a shellfish allergy and was told that almost everything has oyster sauce in it so he couldn't have it, including the ribeye, which they said was marinated in oyster sauce. So he settled for a simple noodles and broth just to find after eating part of it that it had pieces of the ribeye in it. We brought it up as an issue since we were told he couldn't have the ribeye then confusingly we were told it was fine and he can continue to eat the noodles and broth with the ribeye. We were never told why it was fine now but not before we ordered. I got the pork banh mi but it seemed to be all Bread. 30% of the banh mi felt like I was just eating two slices of bread with some seasoning and slivers of some veggies. I had really high hopes for this restaurant especially after seeing all the social media influencers hype this place up on my IG feed. But nothing was good at all and not authentic Vietnamese food in my opinion. I've had so much Viet food in my life time and this did not make the cut. Right when we walked in, there were 10 wait staffs just hanging near the bar/kitchen and nobody managing the front entrance. So my friend and I were looking at eachother like you have this many staff but not one can come help watch the front and seat us... Now on to the food, trust me the food looks better than it tastes. Our truffle shrimp and pork wonton just does not taste like a real Asian wonton. I'm Asian and know how to make good wonton, I don't understand how you can mess up on something that's classic to Asian food cuisines. The dough was very doughy at the top like it was not done. The filling was tough like it needed some fat to balance the texture the of meat filling. So yea texture was all wrong. The razor clams was way over cooked. I was honestly chewing for days and gave up and just swallowed it hole. I never ever had over cooked razor clams before. How can you over cook clams it was terrible. Imagine chewing on rubber bands. That's the texture it was giving. The bun cha Ha Noi, I seriously don't know what happened to this traditional Vietnamese dish. When you go to a Viet restaurant and order this dish, they give you a lot of herbs and lettuce to wrap your noodles and meat in, NOT 1 piece of lettuce ‍. How do you expect me to wrap with 1 piece of lettuce with all the noodles and meat. Also, the nuoc cham, I dont even know if it was nuoc cham to be honest. It came out in a big soup bowl, warm and our meat was dunked in it. I've never had that served to me before in any Viet place. The nuoc cham also just tasted like water. No fish sauce, lime flavor at all. The lap skirt steak was nothing unique. I thought it would have a umami taste with the tamarind nuoc cham. But again no fish sauce taste. Just tasted like regular American tough steak. This chilies were also not even spicy. Thai chili is supposed to be spicy, where the spice yo??? My friend and I drove very far to Bainbridge Island just to try this and spent almost $200. It was not worth it and we were both very disappointed. read more

We had a very nice evening tonight at Ba Sa. We were able to sit outside in their enclosed area for dinner. There were 4 of us, celebrating a milestone for our daughter and this is where she wanted to dine. There were so many options and we ended up ordering so many different dishes to try, along with cocktails and a few beers I think the only area that they could improve upon, is offering a complimentary dessert for a birthday or anniversary. I love the food and the staff here. The reliability of the quality of meals and drinks has been constant over the years. My gripe is with the waitlist system. I came here once with my family visiting from out of town, including young kids. We got on the list and saw it'd take an hour, so we strolled up and down Winslow. Then when we were told we were up next we came back, but had to wait another half hour. By the time we got to our table, everyone was cranky and starving. Overhyped. I'm always hesitant when a fancy, fusion Asian restaurant opens up and Ba Sa confirmed that for me. It's expensive for A-OK food and of course there's an additional 5% service charge tied to the final bill. I know businesses are struggling, but so are people. The prices are already high as it is here. I actually know people who have traveled to Bainbridge Island just to eat at Ba Sa, so I am warning you all that it's not worth the ferry trip. Better Vietnamese food can be found in Seattle for half the price, so stick with what you know. We visited Ba Sa on a Saturday in the early afternoon and surprisingly, there was no line. However, the traffic picked up later in the day. You can't make reservations here, so depending on when you're visiting, be prepared for a wait as I saw after our meal. I was sad to see that the brunch menu is no longer available, which is what I was really hoping for here. My friend told me about their brunch items, and even said that the brunch was better than the all-day/dinner menu. Yet, Ba Sa must've gotten rid of the brunch menu and now only offers the all-day/dinner menu. So I was stuck with that. The menu had a good amount of entrees to choose from, with some small plates and a cocktail menu. I ordered the rib eye pho. I love rib eye, but I wouldn't know this was rib eye had the menu not said so. It tasted like any other kind of beef pho that I get from anywhere else. Also, my biggest complaint was that the rib eye was already cooked down in the pho, so there was no red color/blood, which is how I like all my beef. Broth was nice though. I liked the Chinese donut to soak up the pho. There was also a side of two jalapeno slices, a lime wedge and some hoisin and sriracha. The pho had a shitload of onions in it, so much so that I had to work my way around them when I wanted to eat some beef and noodz. Overall, the pho was good, but it doesn't taste like $21 pho. I ate here in October 2023. The food overall was very good but I am specifically writing this review in regards to the SIZZLING LEMONGRASS LAMB that was on the menu at that time. That was the greatest dish I have ever had the honor to consume. And I think it's important to add that I live in Las Vegas and make it a point to eat at all the best restaurants. But I think about this lamb almost daily, it haunts me. Not to be graphic but following the consumption of the meal that day I looked forward to each and every burp because they gave me the opportunity to relive it. Since then, I have searched Vietnamese restaurants where I live and have googled recipes but to no avail have I found a dupe. I have seriously contemplated making the pilgrimage back to Bainbridge just for this lamb. Now, I have kept tabs and see that the menu changes periodically. This place is a nice spot in bainbridge with indoor and outdoor seating, we sat outside and it was perfect with covered seating. The service was really nice and great. As for the food, I wasn't impressed. To me it's just fancy Americanized "Vietnamese" but really just Asian inspired food, but maybe that makes sense for bainbridge. We ordered a bunch of dishes and shared family style. Most of us ordered cocktails which were good, I got the berry bliss and after trying all of my friends drinks I do think that was one of the better ones as well as the passion fruit lemondrop. I def wouldn't choose to come here again, but if you want a nice asian inspired food on bainbridge then it could be a good choice. To me it's just too expensive and it's too fusion for me and I appreciate more authentic and classic Vietnamese food, it didn't have the flavors I wanted or expected with Vietnamese cuisine. Decided to take a quick day trip away from Seattle and visit this island. Walked around and smelled the aromas coming out from this place and knew I needed to check it out. We got the calamari and spring rolls which were bomb. We also got the pho, lemon grass beef and bahn mi. Everything were super yummy and plated beautifully. Our waitress checked in on us frequently. It was 4:00, before the dinner rush, and after the lunch rush, so I found it annoying. But received great, friendly service from the other staff members. Chicken Buns $15: It comes with 2 buns and was my favorite of the items I tried. Kizuki Ramen still holds my top spot for best chicken karaage. Dry Aged Eye of Ribeye Beef Pho $24: The beef was tender but a little too chewy for me. It has thicker noodles when I usually prefer thin. The broth wasn't that memorable to me, but I liked that it came with Chinese donut for dipping. Duck & Arugula $31: I tried a slice since we got it for the table. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday, around 4:30. The wait was only about 15 minutes and that was just because it was a really nice afternoon and we wanted to sit outside. Our first server was very attentive. Due to a shift change, we got a new server after we ordered and he did a great job as well. The food was very good. We had the egg rolls as an appetizer. My wife had the short ribs with tumeric noodles, I had the beef vermicelli bowl. Both dishes were very good. I agree with a lot of the other reviews that it is a little pricey for Vietnamese food but they have a great location, the food was excellent and you are on Bainbridge Island. Expect a long wait on the weekends but the food is worth it. We waited 40 minutes for a table of 2 at 1pm on Sunday. The restaurant is quite packed and tables were very close to each other. Once we got seated, we placed our orders and our food came real quick. Service was great! The prawn chili oil was probably my favorite, the noodles and prawn combo were delicious. I do wish the bok choy had more flavor but it cut all the oil in the dish real well. The prawns were so crispy on the outside and so juicy on the inside. The chicken bun was yum too. Ba Sa is a nice fusion with many Asian inspired dishes As long as you remember this, you can appreciate this place. Most of their dishes are on the more savory side so you'll probably be drinking a lot of water. We got taro egg rolls, mussels in coconut cream with a side of baguette, pork fried noodles, butter beef with garlic fried rice, and simple pho broth with noodles (not pictured) Taro egg rolls were crispy and you could mildly taste the taro. Not bad and an interesting twist. Mussels in coconut cream were very delicious and the baguette to soak up the leftover coconut cream is just *chef's kiss* the baguette is extra, but I definitely recommend because it was fresh, warm, and crispy. Alternatively, you can opt to get rice to soak up the leftover coconut curry. Pork fried noodles were the crowd favorite. While the name and ingredients aren't like super unique, Ba Sa does an awesome job with this dish. Buttered beef with garlic fried rice was a bit disappointing at $36 a plate. The meat was delicious and would be amazing if it could be ordered as a side. The garlic fried rice was just okay and almost a bit too mushy. I probably wouldn't order this dish again next time. Simple Pho broth with noodles is exactly what it sounds like. Comes with all the condiments, you'd expect, but the broth is already super salty so if you usually put hoisin sauce in to season more, maybe hold off. Overall, the pork fried noodles and mussels in coconut cream would be my recommended if you were just stopping by. read more

We came to Bainbridge Island on our recent trip to Seattle. We came here for an early dinner because we wanted to catch the sunset on the ferry back to Seattle. Luckily it wants crowded at all and we were able to eat outdoors. Love the ambiance of the place- both indoors and outdoors. Admittedly, we did a wine tasting right before and skipped lunch, so we were HUNGRY. We ordered a few dishes to share: Spicy Truffle Wonton, Chicken Buns, Butter Beef with Garlic Fried Rice, and Pork Fried Noodle. They food came out pretty quickly. The first two came out one-by-one and the 2 entrees came together. The only bummer was the egg on the Pork Fried Noodle didn't have a runny yolk. It was cooked more medium. And the Spicy Truffle Wontons had zero spice- that was fine but just misleading. Overall we liked everything we ordered. Everything ate fresh and colorful with great textures. This restaurant is a unicorn on Bainbridge island, it's definitely a must try place if you're on the island. The owner is super sweet and cares deeply about the quality of her dishes.
