I had all of the so-called top bagel places in New York on my list to hit. But I was trying to do too much in two and a half days which is impossible in this beautiful city. So I just counted my losses and said the next time I came I would do the bagel thing. And low and behold......... Right next door to Joe's Pizza was this place. Maybe I'm not a bagel expert but I don't understand how they only got three stars. They had at least eight different kinds of spreads. And they were diverse. From the savory to the sweet. They had at least a dozen different kind of bagels. They had three kinds of salmon that looks so good. These guys had a full menu of everything. Pretty good customer service which is hard to find in the city. Every place you go is like hurry up and go dude. Lol. I finally got my salmon bagel it didn't look as pretty as the place I wanted to visit with all the nice dill and makings that I wanted but it was definitely good enough. I brought the spread home and got so much cool points for my mom. So the other bagel spots must be perfect because they sure felt like it. I think I'm almost an official New Yorker. Lol. UGH! I'll get right to it. No beating around the bush here. Bagels sucked. Can I say sucked and not violated TOS? I started with an everything with cream cheese, I ordered it un-toasted cause that's the way you can truly evaluate a bagel. Toasting hides so many flaws. The bagel was or at least seemed to be stale. Hard and very difficult to chew. Yeah, that bad. Just to make sure, I went back and got a poppy with butter. Double ugh!! Barely any butter. We hadn't planned on stopping at Bagels on the Square, but when our first choice, Joe's Pizza, didn't have any slices ready, we decided to make a detour next door. It was around 10am when we walked in, and it wasn't crowded at all. There were several staff members ready to take our orders, and the menu had so many options to choose from. I have to admit, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the variety of cream cheese flavors. I know it's a New York thing, but it was new to me. Eventually, I settled on a plain bagel with scallion bacon cream cheese. The price seemed reasonable, and my order was ready in no time. We decided to take our bagels to go and found a park bench across the street to enjoy our breakfast. The bagel was tasty, but I have to say, it had a ton of extra cream cheese. Several times a year, I bring people to New York to experience the city. I always include a stop at Bagels on the Square because you need a true New York bagel experience, and this is a great place to get one. The staff is great. If I'm there with one friend, we get great service - same as when I bring 20. If you're unsure, ask them what bagel is freshest and what they suggest with it, and they'll help you out. When you walk in, you see all the fresh bagels in bins and the amazing cream cheese options in the case - there are other sandwiches and stuff, but I only have eyes for the bagels and cream cheese. My favorites are everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and cinnamon raisin bagel with walnut cream cheese. read more

I would give a 3.5 for this place. It's not the best but it's decent. I come here often since I live so close and the prices are fine. A plain bagel with lox spread and tomato just under $6 but when my friend got an almost $9 bacon egg and cheese, I thought that was pushing it. Make sure you emphasize "toasted" when you're ordering. I've asked for it a couple times before and they usually forget to. The guys making the bagels are really nice and there are two girls who ring you up. One is nice and the other is kinda rude. (Yes, H&H Bagels are good, but no way in heck am I going more than 5 blocks from my house when the bagel craving calls). Bagel on the Square is the best bagel spot in Greenwich Village. My go-to order: everything bagel, not toasted, jalapeño cream cheese with a slice of tomato and onion. (Perfection!) The online ordering system is a pain to use, so I always call in my order for delivery. Super tasty. Super fast. These were very sub par bagels, bagels that do not really deserve to occupy real estate in New York City. The bagels themselves were flavorless, and had the texture of bread. The inside of the store is very no frills, very much like a deli counter. The staff were really nice, but I wouldn't say this is a cute or charming spot by any means. read more

Right next to Joe's Pizza, which I think has the best pizza in the city, so does Bagels on the Square measure up to it? The short answer is... no. Yes, the bagel is crunchy and chewy, yes it is a good size (maybe a tad too small). However, that also seems to be the problem with it. It is basic. Perhaps a little too basic. There is no real flavor to the bagel. It is rather... too plain for a plain bagel. It might as well wear a Gingham dress with flats. That is how ordinary it is. At least it is filled well. I got lox and eggs and each come through nicely, neither one overpowering the other. If you are in Washington Square, and you are torn between Joe's or this place, it is a no brainer, get the pizza. read more

This is the saddest most depressing NYC bagel I have ever encountered in my entire existence of life. It's despicable to the entire island of Manhattan; so bad you'd think they imported them from Pennsylvania. It was ate out of pure hangover necessity. The bagels themselves are fluffy and delicious; if you're able to get them fresh don't toast them, they're really good. Otherwise toastes is the way to go. You can get a wide variety of bagels, bagel sandwiches, and other deli traditions including a BLT, a turkey club and so much more. They also have a ton of cream cheese flavors to choose from, so if you're feeling fiesty i suggest you try their jalapeno spread. The quality of these bagels is amazing and speaking with some locals it hasnt changed in almost 20 years. Bagels on the Square reminds me of Bagel Talk on the UWS. It's probably underrated on best-of-NYC lists, as it's clearly a fresh product, just the right size, with a decent crust and enough chew for credibility. I believe it's baked fresh on premises. Like Bagel Talk, all that goodness is somewhat undermined by the fact that it is undersalted (in our view), a situation not helped by the fact that everything bagel seasoning is only sprinkled on top. It's on par with Zucker's, Brooklyn Bagel, better than Bagel Bob's. My last visit was about 6 years ago, so I was pretty thrilled to see this institution still hangin' tough through it all. Neighbor Joe's Pizza has shuttered, as have Rocco's, Stolle, Royce, Keste, and so many other lovely stores and restaurants nearby. Perhaps I'm too senile to remember, but prices are close to what they were when we last lived in the neighborhood and I don't think there's been any change in quality at all. A completely solid option for bagels in NYC. Sandwiches are popular with the many NYU students in the area. The staff have always, in my experience, been nothing short of lovely. read more

Bottom Line: A great carry-out spot for bagels, cream cheese and Boar's head deli sandwiches. Bagel's on the Square was the closest bagel shop to my SoHo hotel that had at least four stars on Yelp. So, my husband and I jumped on an early morning subway to find fresh bagels. We both had the French toast bagel which was sweet, cinnamon-y and toasty. It was a great way to start the morning. While our bagels were being toasted I eyed up the beautiful display of different flavored cream cheeses. I've never seen such a lovely display of cream cheese. They also had a very, large, fresh piece of brined salmon, better known as lox in a bagel shop, in the case. Also, I always appreciate establishments that carry quality Boar's Head meats and cheeses. For drinks, they have many glass-front refrigerators with many options including water, soda, tea, milk and juice. They also serve coffee. Service was prompt and friendly; however, they did mess up our order. (One bagel was supposed to be toasted without cream cheese but it had cream cheese on it, and we were charged for it.) Not a huge deal but next time I'll be more attentive. There isn't anywhere to sit at Bagels on the Square so plan to take it to go. read more

I grew up around the corner from this place. I have been coming here regularly since I was in middle school (I am now nearly 30), and the quality of these bagels have not changed the entire time. They are always HUGE and fresh, doughy and flavorful. In all the years I've been eating here, I haven't had a single complaint. This place is a true neighborhood classic. The bacon cheddar cream cheese is absolutely to-die-for, and I have yet to find another place that can replicate it. The nearly-one-year period where this place was closed and the neighborhood was uncertain whether or not they would return, was truly awful. If you don't mind a big line on a Saturday or Sunday morning, this place is absolutely worth it. Even if you do mind the line, their Door Dash service is impeccably quick, and they always pay close attention to modifications. What would we do without you, Bagels on the Square?! read more

Even with at least four orders in front of me, I was out in 10-12 - near a shaded square with benches where you can hang out and eat your bagel in peace - literally around the corner from a west 4th station entrance Tips and things to consider: - standard quality bagels - as in I get bagels from here often and enjoy them, but there are better bagels in New York (e.g. if you only get one chance while you're here, or if you have to go out of your way to get to it) - Lox is probably the most expensive thing here. Expect the bagel to cost ~10, maybe more, but you'll get plenty. If you're a connoisseur, though, just pass. - if you order iced coffee, ask for light ice. It's also best with milk or creamer. I'm definitely in the minority here but even though I feel that the bagels are well made dough-wise, the seasoning was a bit lacking. I got an everything bagel the few times I've been here and the bits of seasoning on it just didn't taste very flavorful compared to other places. I didn't get that strong onion or garlic kick that I normally would which made it disappointing. The morning rush can get quite busy here but they know how to keep customers moving in and out in an efficient manner. Also the prices are VERY good for the Village area and they don't skimp out on the filling making it a very filling bagel.
