We've been coming here for years, and it's always a great spot with reasonable prices. I'm surprised to see some of the negative reviews about the waitstaff. We've had Dupree as our server several times, and he's always been great!

Service was terrible, the drinks for happy hour deal was misleading, parking is rough, only one bathroom, all the tables were wobbly or broken. Will not be returning.

They have huge margaritas for $21-22, and you can even get them to go! If you take one with you, you're supposed to keep it "sealed" with the sticker they place over the straw hole. But of course, you "don't have to" , you can always take a sip and "reseal" it ;)

Solid place! Got a breakfast burrito, think it was $15? Not terribly priced because it was absolutely ginormous. The food came out super quickly, service was great. The burrito could've used a sauce or something but the ingredients seemed really fresh and the tortilla rocked. Did I mention it's right on the beach? Great vibes, someone was drinking a mega margarita, looked great! I'll be back

This place is an absolute SCAM happy hour doesn't apply to all drinks as advertised. The bartender asked my friend if she wanted the "big one" and she replied sure which she had no idea meant a MEGA marg which was NOT included in happy hour and resulted in an $80 bill. There was an automatic service fee added to the bill as well as a "flavor up" fee for the margs. They were disgusting. The nachos we ordered were half burnt tortillas. Our tacos sucked too, but not as bad as the margs and nachos. This place SUCKS. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.

I love this place, giant margs and right next to the beach, but the surcharge is outrageous. I'm always glad to tip but surcharge is always like another added 20%.

Baja Beach Cafe is an absolute gem in San Diego! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming, fun, and full of energy. The staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel like valued guests throughout our visit. The food was outstanding--fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. Every dish we ordered was packed with authentic taste, and the portions were generous. The drinks were equally impressive and paired perfectly with the meal. What really stood out was the combination of great food, excellent service, and the relaxed beachside vibe that makes Baja Beach Cafe such a memorable experience. Whether you're a local or just visiting San Diego, this is a place you don't want to miss. We left already looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommend Baja Beach Cafe to anyone looking for delicious food, great drinks, and a fantastic atmosphere! 5/5 - A true San Diego favorite!

Friendly staff, great location for a sunset pic, huge margaritas and the food was tasty. The server recommended a few items to order and they were fantastic. Wish I remembered his name but if your reading this..thank you The only bad thing I would say is that they hold your credit card while sitting on the patio. These days with all the credit card problems we didn't like giving them the card to hold. I guess they have their reasons. So we went along with it. We definitely recommend this restaurant.

    Boardwalk Breakfast

Ended up at this place after an event that was going on in the morning- we were hungry and this was the first place that we saw- rather we smelled breakfast and couldn't walk away.  Despite there being a lot of people, and with no reservations, we were sat pretty quick.  We are sure they are used to the rush of people as it is on the boardwalk.  We sat outside to enjoy the ocean view and the weather. The waitress got us our coffees and had our order taken right away. I didn't get anything too fancy- just Boardwalk Breakfast which consisted of two eggs, hickory smoked bacon and a side white toast.  I also go a side of the chicken apple sausage- the bacon was the better choice! The food was good and hit the spot- wasn't looking for anything too heavy so this was exactly what it said it was and it was perfect! We would definitely come back. The vibes of this places what you would expect from a local beach spot.  The service was fast and friendly. The weather was great. What else can you ask for?

    Watermelon Margarita
    Maryellen S.

My friend and I went here and had a good time. We got the extra large watermelon margaritas which were better than I expected...didn't taste like they were from a Slurpee machine at 7-11. Tacos were okay...food is average but you can't beat the right on the beach location. My friend asked the server if he could get tacos ala-carte and she said she didn't know what that meant because it was her first week there...which we both found very amusing.

    Coconut margarita
    Shannon B.

The location here cannot be beat. Come during 4-6 for happy hour and get 2-1 drinks in *to go* cups. Huge selection of margaritas: we tried the watermelon, Baja & coconut. I personally love all things coconut so that one was my favorite, but all were delicious. We did the triple crown dip which had queso, bean dip, salsa & guc. All were super mid. Fish tacos with the creamy spicy sauce were perfect. Husband loved his surf & turf burrito. Kids bean & cheese burritos were devoured. I'm not going to hype this up as the most authentic, best Mexican, but with some killer margs and the people watching: elite.

    Margs
    Melanie M.

My friend and I came here. We seated ourselves. We started with some margs. They were huge and good. We both got surf & turf tacos and shared chips & guac. The tacos were just ok. The chip to guac ratio was off. The chips were good but the guac needed seasoning. Service was alright but it seemed like there was only one waitress for the whole place. I would come back again.

Great recommendations, super genuine and fun, had the best energy and was CONSTANTLY checking in on us; however, a couple of the other workers could have been a little bit more open with communication. We were sitting against the window at the high top wraparound bar tables (feels like an extension of the bar), so the bar is easy to order from and was our go to as soon as we arrived. The bartender took our order, but was standoffish as if we were doing something foreign or a big "no no". Finally the server in charge of our area told us that the bartenders are in charge of the bar and there are other servers for all the other tables/zones. If we were told that from the beginning, we would have made sure to follow the order of the place and order from the correct server. A few of us truly felt bad, but now we know when we go in next time what to expect. Barleymash is always a great time, so we always want to make sure we are doing it right! I truly recommend sitting anywhere else but that window/wall on a packed night, but sometimes you have to deal with what you are lucky enough to get!

When I entered the restaurant around 7:00 PM, I was stopped and questioned extensively by security regarding my service animal. Rather than being asked the limited ADA-compliant questions permitted by law, the interaction became prolonged and uncomfortable while staff repeatedly attempted to determine whether my dog was a "real" service animal or simply an emotional support animal. I remained waiting at the entrance while this was repeatedly discussed back and forth. What made the situation especially humiliating was that another patron openly laughed at me during the interaction while walking outside for a cigarette. I later realized this same patron had her own dog inside the establishment in a stroller the entire time. Staff members appeared very familiar and comfortable with her, and multiple employees, including my waitress- referred to her as a "regular." Although her dog was eventually moved to the patio area, the contrast in how the situations were handled made me feel singled out, embarrassed, and unfairly scrutinized. I later spoke with management in hopes of resolving the matter respectfully. During that conversation, I was surprised and concerned to hear that neither management nor staff were familiar with psychiatric service animals or their protections under the ADA. Psychiatric service animals are legally recognized service animals when trained to perform disability-related tasks, and this lack of awareness was deeply concerning, especially in a city like San Diego with a large disabled and veteran community. I fully understand that businesses are allowed to ask limited ADA-compliant questions regarding service animals, and I also understand that many establishments have dealt with individuals falsely claiming pets as service animals. However, there is a significant difference between appropriately verifying a service animal and making a disabled customer feel publicly interrogated and humiliated. The overall handling of this interaction lacked professionalism, sensitivity, and basic understanding of ADA service animal protections. No customer should feel mocked, scrutinized, or publicly embarrassed simply for entering a restaurant with a legitimate service animal. I sincerely hope this situation can serve as an opportunity for additional ADA education and proper service animal training for staff moving forward so that other disabled guests do not experience similar treatment. I would appreciate being informed of any steps the restaurant intends to take regarding ADA compliance and staff training before I determine how I would like to proceed further. Thank you for your time and attention.

From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by an uplifting open-air environment, truly a breath of fresh air that felt like stepping onto the observation deck of the USS Enterprise. The amazing views of the bay were nothing short of spectacular, bringing a serene beauty that rivals the finest star systems. Over the years, my wife, her girlfriend, and I have become frequent travelers to this culinary haven, beaming back for nearly 15 years--a testament to its enduring allure. The selection of IPAs and mixed drinks is impressive, catering to even the most discerning palates in the galaxy. The choices are vast enough to satisfy anyone embarking on this flavor exploration, whether you prefer a refreshing drink to toast a successful mission or something bolder, like a phaser on stun! The menu features a delightful array of options, including fresh salads, tantalizing finger foods, and, of course, their famed burgers. My wife's enthusiasm for the offerings has always been infectious, and during this visit, she and her girlfriend were on a culinary adventure of their own, indulging in the flavors that have made Nicky Rottens a local favorite. The burgers are truly out of this world--juicy, flavorful, and expertly crafted to ensure a warp-speed experience with every bite. You'll find that each dish is prepared with precision, as if overseen by a skilled chef with the abilities of a Vulcan and the passion of a true culinary Starfleet officer. In conclusion, Nicky Rottens is a prime destination for anyone seeking a vibrant atmosphere, stunning views, and a solid meal. I can confidently say that if you ever find yourself in Coronado, this establishment is a must-visit. After all, it's just one small step for man, and one giant leap into deliciousness!
