This was my first time at Bamboo house and it did not disappoint! My table of 4 definitely over ordered but we were so hungry! Not pictured, we got beef lo mein and spicy crispy chicken and both were so good! The Peking duck was on every table and was sold out by 7:30pm on a Friday night. Service was pretty good, smooth and quick to bring the food out. Ambiance is also nice for small families and friends but might be loud for date night. The staff are also very good about keeping up with the ticketing system. There was a group that walked in and thought their number got called and followed the waiter to the table. Austin in the last few years has seen the arrival of at least 10 exceptional Chinese restaurants. While no one will ever confuse Austin with Vancouver or Flushing Chinatown, We have gone from being Chinese Challenged to being Chinese Serious. Bamboo House is one of the restaurants of distinction that is giving Austin nontrivial street cred as a place to get Chinese food. The clientele is 90 percent plus Chinese. At a recent weekend lunch, there was a one hour waiting list to get in. People do not wait one hour in line to eat at restaurants that are terrible. Okay - the weather was cold, so they did not have their customary patio seating available. But with warm weather - it would have been a forty minute wait to get in. Even if it was a two hour wait, it would absolutely positively be worth it. * * * Bamboo Hut serves Northern Chinese Beijing-Shanghai food, rather than the Southern Cantonese food we usually see. There is an additional fillip. They also serve non-Chili-Oil Szechuan specialties. American Szechuan food is basically all red colored dishes with chili oil, chili oil, chili oil, and for a change of pace, twice as much chili oil. Those chili oil dishes are divine ... But that is like saying all Texas food has jalapenos. Just like there is Italian food that is not red sauce Italian There is Szechuan food that is not red sauce Chinese. They serve those dishes at Bamboo House. * * * About 1/4 of the menu involves unique dishes you can only get at Bamboo House. 3/4 are very good renditions of other Chinese dishes you have had elsewhere. Staples such as Lo Mein and Generic Sauteed Vegetables are outstanding in their Bamboo House Version. They do a lot of dishes which are batter fried in an egg breading. Those dishes are super filling and super addictive. We got the equivalent of Sweet Potato French Fries with the special egg coating. We have been eating off that one order for several days. It was good times on Day One. It is still good times on Day Four. They do what they call Spicy Fried Chicken which is a superior version of a Chong Qing Chicken. Any kitchen can saute whatever in a wok with 600 zillion dried red chilis. The dish vastly improves when you do a superlative job on the chicken chunks and you make those both large and magnificently tasty in their own right. They don't bother with the usual garlic and ginger bits here - and they don't need to. The chicken carries the day. They have a lot of dishes that they serve "Szechuan". This neither means spicy, nor does it involve chili oil. This means sauteed in a savory brown sauce unlike the brown sauce dishes you get in American Chinese restaurants. Their lo mein dishes have a distinctive taste too ... So I wonder if the Szechuan brown goes in both dishes. Either way - Szechuan style is super good here. Get it with what ever meat or vegetables you feel like having. * * * Their drunken chicken is to die for. This is steamed chicken chopped into random small pieces with a meat cleaver, marinated in shochu and served cold. It is obscenely good. * * * I am giving all this praise and I am ignoring two of the most important house specialties. The house specializes in Peking Duck. Avian flu has put dramatic restrictions on the supply of ducks that can be Peking-ed. So they limit how many ducks can be ordered by a given party. The ducks are pricy but they are probably worth exploring. They also maintain a live lobster tank. Every lobster dish they serve has two complete lobsters, and those lobsters are not small. The lobster dishes looked intriguing ... Even if my credit card was saying "You aren't really going to do this, are you?" * * * Practical note to keep in mind about Bamboo House. Portions are about two thirds larger than you are used to. These are not exactly double servings - but they are not far off either. I typically order the same number of dishes I order at other top of the line Chinese restaurants. I take home way more from Bamboo House than I do from more traditional establishments. Prices reflect the fact that you are getting more. Since what you are getting is pretty damm fine, Think of the tab at the end of the meal as an investment. We came here with our neighbors the other night (they're already devotees) and had a great meal. It's good we arrived relatively early because the place was packed and a line was forming by the time that we left. FYI there is no alcohol served here, but you can pick up some beers at the market down the street, which is what we did. The food comes out FAST. Like, 5 minutes after you order! All the dishes that we had were great. Our favorite one was the green beans, eggplant, and potato dish which had a great sauce on it, and the potatoes were cut in this super funky way. The beef cumin had the perfect kick of spice and we appreciated the shredded veggies it came out with. The salt and pepper shrimp was fine, nothing special, and we thought the bell peppers that accompanied them were a bit undercooked. No matter. We also got a massive pot of spicy boiled fish that one of us thought was only OK, but that the other one really enjoyed. You definitely get the tongue-numbing chiles with it--unfortunately it ate super greasy. Our daughter loved the wonton soup (a sizable portion) that had a respectable broth and a good amount of accoutrements in addition to the dumplings. All in all, this is an unfussy establishment slinging out some very good Chinese food in central Austin, kind of how Asia Cafe *used* to be back in the day. We were generously treated to dinner, but noticed that prices were slightly elevated while not being outrageous. And portions are generous. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back again, for take out or dine-in whenever the craving for this kind of cuisine strikes. The orange chicken was ok, I was thrown off how it's done, it's thin, super thin chicken meat and then it's battered and fried. The orange flavor is amazing, very citrusy but I will mention I couldn't taste the meat, just the batter. Not a fan of it, I won't order it again. The fish fillets are a great dish, flash fried with a thin and light crispy batter with tender white fish meat on the inside. It tasted more salt and pepper like. Awesome dish. The star of the show is the crispy spicy chicken. Awesome tender meat, coated in light batter. Then it had a nice spicy aroma with the peppercorns. Once you bite into it, flavorful bite of Asian flavors with low oil taste. Overall I wasn't expecting to have soo much fried food. I made that mistake so next time I won't have soo much fried food but the vegetables helped cut through all the fried flavors. Get the duck! Came here for their lunch special but they didn't offer their lunch special so I ordered the full size entree of their three meat Kung Pao. It was good Kung Pao dish and they give you plenty of rice. However, clearly the go to dish here is the duck and an entree of the Kung Pao is around $20. So I'm kicking myself for not getting 1/2 duck. Pay the extra $10 and you get duck soup and all the accouterments to make a duck crepe. If you look at almost all of the tables, everyone is getting the duck so don't make the same mistake I did. Also if you want the duck get here when they open. I've been here once but it was a long time ago, and I've gotten food to-go here as well but they don't allow the duck on to-go orders. I came here with a friend who mainly wanted the duck, so we ordered light. Vegetable spring rolls - yummy, very nice and crispy. Half Duck - best quality peking duck in Austin. The skin is crispy and the meat is very juicy, and the fat is rendered so you don't get the fatty slices. The only thing is that the quantity is or feels smaller than you would get at another peking duck spot (you don't get the drums either). The duck does come with duck broth, so that's nice as well. Snow Pea Leaves - well cooked and very fresh. I few of the stalks were undercooked and too fibrous but otherwise well done. I do have a small complaint about our service here though. They mentioned that the duck would come out in 30-35 minutes, but it came out in like 15 minutes. Normally, that would be a good thing (which is why we ordered spring rolls), but actually the duck came out super fast, and then the veggies with rice came out like 20 minutes after the duck. We had thought they had forgotten about it at that time and were nearly finished with the duck. Just a bit odd to get veggies way after the main course. Tofu with Crab Meat: this was alright to me, I didn't really taste the crab meat. Couple Beef Slice: I love this appetizer and I love that it comes cold. Super flavorful and not too heavy. Green Beans w/ Minced Pork: I love stir fried green beans and this one did not disappoint. Boiled Fish Fillets in Chili Sauce: This was one of my favorite dishes. The fish was so tender and the soup was so flavorful. There was lots of veggies inside which I loved and it was the perfect amount of spice. Definitely a must order. Bamboo is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Austin. The portions are MASSIVE and are perfect for family-style eating. The flavors are delicious and the menu is quite expansive. The pecking duck is their speciality and almost always runs out so be sure to get there early if you want to order. They offer a lunch special on the weekdays that is large in quantity and cheap in price. My favorites are the kung pao chicken, mapo tofu, sechuzan chicken, and the vegetable fried rice. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in town. The food is delicious and the portions are huge! My go-to dishes are the Beef slices with sauerkraut, Boiled fish fillets in chili oil, Spicy/crispy chicken, Maoxuewang, Basil eggplant, Minced pork with long beans, Steamed chicken in chili sauce, Couple's beef slices, Sauteed pea sprout, Mixed vegetables with tofu, and of course the Peking duck. I'll typically order some combination of these depending on party size. When you get seated, be sure to go ahead and put in the order for the duck as it does take a while for them to prepare. Depending on your party size, you can either get a half or a whole order. Also depending on your party size, I'd say the duck and 2 dishes or so would feed 3-4 people easily. I like coming here in large parties so we can order more things, but pretty much every time I come here there's leftovers. If you're like me and enjoy things like pork blood/intestines, the maoxuewang is done really well here. That and dishes like the beef slices w/ sauerkraut and boiled fish fillets come in to-go containers already that they just seal up for you to take home. I like taking these home cause I'll typically throw it into a pot and add noodles or bean thread noodles the next day for another delicious meal or two. There's not many good vegetable options (and I'm by no means a vegetarian), and a lot of their entrees are just kind of adequate versions of familiar stuff. There's more "authentic" dishes on the menu like boiled fish in chili sauce or stewed beef tongue in sauerkraut, but these aren't really my bag. Wow! My son brought us here for our Christmas present. Boy were we happy!!! The food is amazing. Came for lunch because we like smaller portions and the variety of soup and vegetable spring rolls included with the meal. Let me say I still brought home enough for another meal. I ordered Lunch, Kung Pow Three Ways, subbed the beef for broccoli. It was awesome! The veggies include jalapeños which makes is spicy. I like spicy, especially jalapeño spicy! The peanuts help offset the spice but I had to pull off the red peppers and jalapeños so I didn't burn a hole in my stomach. The hot and sour soup was legit filled with mushrooms and tofu. The vegetable egg roll was perfectly crispy and flavorful. Hubby ordered Schezuan Chicken and loved it. He didn't get soup but liked his egg roll appetizer too! My son ordered Teriyaki Chicken and subbed lomein noodles for rice for $3 more. It was worth it. He shared some with me and there were plenty. After driving around trying to find somewhere that didn't have lines out the door on a Saturday afternoon, the family ended up at Bamboo House out of luck and a confirmed good Yelp score. This feels like a hidden treasure and we will be bringing friends and family who visit to here soon. It felt nice to be in a space that was not overly fussy or trying to be too cool.
