I was peeping in because I didn't see any signs about rice combos but the gentlemen working inside welcomed me to come in and they showed me the menu. I ended up ordering the roasted pork belly wirh rice and added a side of duck. My to go order was ready within minutes. I couldn't wait until I got home. So I started eating it in my car. The skin on both the duck and pork belly was still crispy and had a good ratio of meat and less fat. It was very good. I would recommend getting both but it wasn't cheap. I spent $22. It had the perfect crunch and the rice was garnished with cilantro and dried shallots. Also came with a side of sauce to dip your meat in. Bolsa Bao - (5/5) - This bao was huge. I think one would fill me up. I loved the crispy pork. What really made this bao so good was the garnishes of the cucumber, pickled carrot and onion, green onion, fried shallots, sesame hoisin sauce and sriracha garlic mayo. All of the orders were good serving sizes, but the duck in the rice order was a little skinny and meatless LOL,, nonetheless very yummy and the huge piece of duck in the bao made up for it :') The roast pork was crispy and juicy,, very good! I will say it is very expensive for what you get. It's crazy how one bao is more than $5. This is coming from a Chinese family and eating these at a restaurant! When it comes to the food itself, it was okay. The chia siu was on the dry side and tasted old and the roasted duck in the bao and rice was extremely oily and had majority fat and bone versus the actual meat. The baos themselves were more on the soggy side. Really wanted them to be fluffy! I was kinda disappointed by this meal. The rice and cucumbers were probably the best thing out of the whole order. Came here for the first time during dinner and ordered to go. I got the duck and crispy pork belly baos with the Hainan chicken rice dish. The baos were HUGE! I wasn't expecting them to be so large but appreciated the generous portions. I recently started eating duck again after disliking it for many years due to overly oily dishes in the past. The chunk of meat was hugeeee and proportionate to the also hugeeee bao bun (compared to some places that give the tiniest little speck of meat in the bun- grab your magnifying glass) hahaha the thick cut could have used some more flavor though. I loved the sauce that came with it and the duck def needed some extra lovin'. The crispy pork belly bao reminded me exactly of lechon! For all my Filipino food lovers hahah unfortunately, I don't like lechon that much and knew I should've gone with the braised pork belly! Next time I'll listen to myself‍ the pickled veggies and cucumbers helped to balance out the fattiness. Overall, it was still a good bao! The hainan chicken rice I only tried a little of. While looking for other local food spots, I happily came across Baos Hog in Garden Grove. This fast-casual focuses on a slightly modern take on baos and rice dishes with Chinese bbq meats. The store is a bit intimate in size with a handful of metal tabletops and seats available inside. Through a glass partition, you are able to see them busily prepare your order through an assembly line process. The posted menu on the wall sort of reminds me of the split-flap display in classic subway stations. My first ordered item is the Roast Pork Rice ($12.50). This rice box comes with a scoop of rice topped with fried garlic, refreshing sliced of cucumber, and a generous amount of thick, crunchy pork pieces. While the pork has terrific flavor, admittedly, some of the chunkier skin pieces had a bit of a tougher, difficult bite to them. I'm a steamed bun maniac, so I had to pick up some of their baos. The first bao I order was their Duck Bao ($5.50). Within a fluffy steamed bun are a few pieces of juicy duck meat, along with their their thin, crimson, glossy, crispy skin. This is then topped with slices of green onions, pieces of fried garlic, and a spread of hoisin sauce. I really enjoyed the flavors and textures on this one. I also got their Boss Bao ($5). This bun comes with a fatty piece of pork, slice of cucumber, tangy pickled onions, cilantro, fried garlic, and a house sauce. Just be aware that the pork does have quite a fatty layer on it. It was also enjoyable although it is quite a heavier, rich item. To wash this hefty meal down, I also picked up their refreshing Lychee Black Tea ($3.50). A delightful amount of lychee sweetness in a black tea base. Overall, I enjoyed the baos immensely. I think I may aim for a different rice dish next time (they were out of the Hainan Chicken Rice that day, which is what I actually wanted). Baos were ready in just a few minutes. The pop chicken took a little longer to make. Baos and chicken were more than what I expected. The duck bao was tender. This is like Peking duck but on steroids. The bao was soft and fresh. Pickled veggies and sauce complimented the duck. Delicious. The crispy pork bao was tougher to eat. The skin was hard to bite through and meat wasn't as tender. It also didn't taste fresh like it's been sitting out but still tasted great regardless. The pop chicken was hot, crispy, and delicious. Loved the seasoning and dipping sauce. Generous portion for $6! Vietnamese coffee was perfect, not too concentrated. Lady who took my order was very nice and fixed my order no problem. The way the place is painted and decorated can be updated a bit as there are scratched marks on the walls from the chairs and the walls painted with the texture looked 'aged' not in a good way. New coat of paint of just plain white will do wonders. Anyways, on to the food. There was only one person who was multitasking with chopping the meat and packing for to-go orders. She took time from the preparations to take my order. I ordered 2 Duck Bao, 1 Bolsa Bao, 1 Boss Bao, and 1 Cow Bao. Thinking the portions would be small, I also ordered Hainan Chicken rice. 3 lemonade sweet tea to drink. She took my orders promptly and went back to her chores. I love the concept of this fast-casual spot, but in terms of execution, it was just okay. The baos were fluffly and warm, but I felt like the protein and toppings that came in the baos didn't stand out to me. My friend and I shared a bunch of the baos (cow, duck, bolsa, cha siu, and boss) and boss hog fries, so we gave the menu a thorough try, but we didn't fall in love with any of the baos because we felt like we've tasted better duck, roasted pork, pork belly, and cha siu. If I had to pick a favorite, I think I'd say the cow (beef) one was my favorite. Honestly, everything started to taste the same because each of the baos were garnished the same. In the menu pictures, it looked like each of the baos were garnished differently, so that was a little deceiving. I will say the baos are pretty filling since they are generously loaded. The fries were good, but they were garnished the same as the baos...so it started to taste like the baos.
