Friend canceled morning of so I went solo to avoid the cancellation fee. I sat at a high table over the bar because I wanted to read. It was unfortunately way too dark to read, and honestly too dark to see the menu or the food. My server was lovely and very welcoming. I ordered the polpettone, one giant meatball in a very flavorful sauce. It was delicious. I should have ordered a different pasta because I hate squash but I thought the gnocchi would have enough mushrooms to distract from the damn squash. My mistake. I also ordered the verdure which was delicious, salty and crunchy with toasted breadcrumbs. I took the gnocchi and greens home and will combine the two and toss that damn squash. I came here for an early dinner/drinks and we forewent our reservation for a couple of seats at the bar. It is a quaint little spot that had great vibes and a fantastic drink and food menu. The volume was energetic, but not too loud to carry a conversation. There were hooks under the bar to hang your bag without it touching the ground. The bar tender was attentive and we never had to wait long. We ordered food through him and it was out fairly quickly. To start, I had the Autumn Negroni, which was good, and I am not the biggest gin fan, so that says a lot. I ended up getting a second one it was so good! For food, we started with the kale salad, which had an anchovy dressing that I wasn't sure about, but again, it turned out great. What a disaster. I finally get to NY and one of my idols...John Waxmans restaurant. Service: Seated by hostess (super nice). The one and only time we saw the Waiter was when he took our drink order.....see you later. Never saw him again. Tall good looking dude that wanted to spend his time flirting with the Female Bartender. I personally walked up to the bar, brought my empty glasses and got another round of drinks....TWICE. I went to the bus station for an extra napkin and salt and pepper. Food : I had the Dungeness crab pasta. Pasta was way to thick...I lost the crab. Sauce was delicious but not enough of it because the pasta was so thick. My Girl got the world famous Waxman Chickin and Potatoes. I don't know if there is such a thing as "over basting" but this chicken was dry dry dry. The potatoes cooked to perfection. But no seasoning. Bland bland bland. We passed on dessert because no one offered. So since we had no service all night long. I had to pull an old school truck stop diner move. I had to walk up to the hostess (super nice) and pay my ticket. Let's get this straight....I'm an over-tipper. These people work hard. I left 5.00 on a 200.00 tab. I visited Barbuto twice. Once for a team dinner at a failed startup, once likely after walking the High Line and desperately needing food at an awkward time of the day. Both times I was left thinking that this was a decent restaurant. Portion size necessitates double entrees which is expensive when a failed startup is not footing the bill. We were so excited to finally eat here and it did NOT disappoint. It's a nice vibe inside; pretty casual. My only disappointment was that we sat next to the bar and people kept bumping into us or awkwardly standing next to our table and talking. The food, though, was amazing. We started with the meatball appetizer and the focaccia, both of which were fantastic. The focaccia was the perfect doughy texture with flaky sea salt on top and delicious olive oil for dipping. For entrees we had the Tagliatelle and the chicken, which they're known for. Again both were phenomenal. The chicken was absolute perfection. The crispiest outside with the most moist inside. TLDR: A high recommendation for a peaceful weekend lunch! Starting with the location, Barbuto is about as west as you can go before hitting the highway and it still remains elegant and quaint. The service was excellent, I recommend going at their first seating to enjoy the restaurant to yourself for a bit. The pizza was a light, airy and fluffy masterpiece. Definitely one of my favorite neopolitan pizzas in NYC. However, the star of the meal was the Gnocchi. The blistered tomatoes with the softest (while completely maintaining their structural integrity) gnocchi I've ever had. My wife and I ate at Barbuto for the first time last night. Nice atmosphere with good energy. The shredded kale salad was delicious, unlike any we have ever experienced. The problem occurred when I requested our waiter to wait on firing the entrees so we could enjoy a slower pace of dining. He understood my request and told me to notify him when I wanted him to signal the preparation to the cooking staff. This did not happen. A few minutes later, a runner brought the entrees to the table. The waiter stepped in and told the runner to return the food to the kitchen. I indicated to him that I did not want a reheated $50 steak and he assured me it would be recooked. When the entrees did arrive they were obviously reheated. The food was tepid at best. There was good flavor in both the steak and the red snapper but it was like eating leftovers. The last time I was at Barbuto was at their former location before they closed. Ever since they reopened, I have not been back. My cousin requested that we make a visit and I was able to snag us reservations for a Saturday at 12:15pm. I was actually surprised we managed to get them, since they're booked solid for dinner for a month. I won't question the Resy gods though! We arrived on time and was seated immediately. Our waitress was amazing - super friendly and very nice. She checked in on us often and we felt very well taken care of. To start, we split the breadsticks and bread, which was solid. I had the Gnocchi and everyone else had their signature Sauteed Chicken. My cousin had their special of the day, which I believe was a sauce-less white pizza with Stracciatella cheese and prosciutto. I would call it more of a flatbread than a pizza, because I always think of sauce with pizza. But everything was very good. The gnocchi was perfectly cooked and the sweet corn was amazing. My husband was excited to eat at Barbuto since we are both foodies and have seen Waxman on several food network shows so we decided to eat at his restaurant for our anniversary. We started out with focaccia with oil and a side of oils. They were good but honestly, you can't mess that up. We also shared the kale salad which was delicious BUT also hard to mess up. When our courses came out we were both extremely disappointed. I ordered gnocchi. My fork could barely pierce it. They had terrible flavor and texture and the vegetables they served with it were barely seasoned and not cooked enough. My husband had the papardelle with duck and it was so over seasoned with salt. I thought I was going to have to check his blood pressure when we got home. Our server walked by our table several times and didn't bother to ask if everything was okay. I also didn't get a refill of water. Finally, when I asked for the check I explained what happened and they didn't charge me for my dish (since it wasn't touched and at that point the fork couldn't cut the gnocchi at all). We started with the Kale Caesar salad, it's a 5 star for sure can't remember having a better salad and neither of us are kale fans but I'm glad we took the suggestion and ordered it. This is the first time I have been back to Barbuto since they moved. Waxman was there so it was a super celebrity sighting for the foodie in me! We had a long day at a media event and Barbuto was the perfect spot to unwind. Our waitress was in a bit of a rush to get our order in, but I suppose given its popularity, she needs to do it. We had: +Olives +Focciccia +Insalata Crudi +JW Gnocchi +Cavatelli Two of us had wine and one a martini. The olives and Focciccia are outstanding and a perfect way to start your meal and wind down the day. It's comforting and flavorful and makes you happy to be right where you are. The Insalada is in season, wonderfully light and the perfect balance of bitter and savory. Only small issue - a little sweet would have helped offset the bitterness of greens and radish. The JW Gnocchi - pretty much perfect. I only have Gnocchi at restaurants that are truly Italian and JW's was amazing. The spring ingredients made it feel lighter (sometimes gnocchi can feel like a little bomb just dropped into your stomach). I didn't try the Cavatelli but heard amazing reviews. We did have some VERY loud WS finance guys behind us who clearly overindulged in martinis and couldn't read a room if their life depended on it - but after they left, it was a beautiful night watching the sun set and eating amazing food! read more

The best roast chicken I have eaten in years. The best crunchy roast potatoes. Absolutely delicious flavors in every dish. The food here is outstanding. It's a gorgeous space. A tad noisy but definitely vibey. If you're hard of hearing then not a great choice. But if you can just watch the people and not need to listen to anyone, then this place is a winner. TL;DR - Decent food and a stunning venue. Food (3/5) - The food may have been massively overhyped for me, it was all decent. Since we were a large party, we tried a large range of dishes. Calling out a few favourites: Kale salad was light, the anchovy dressing is a nice touch and gave it a little more depth and a kick. Tagliatelle in a red sausage sauce had good flavour, though the sauce was breaking in parts and the pasta was a little too well done for my liking. Branzino was fresh and the sauce was nutty, a decent mix of savoury / sweet. I liked the hangar steak, but some members of my party thought it was a little too raw. The roast chicken of course, was the one dish that I'd been waiting the whole night for. I loved the skin - it was crispy and flavourful, and the dark meat (drumstick especially) was very juicy and as I expected. But the rest of the chicken was somewhat tasteless unless heavily paired with the salsa verde. though perhaps that's the point. Ambiance (5/5) - the place is beautiful. Floor to ceiling windows and high ceilings, it was a really nice place to sit and watch the sun set. Service (4/5) - place was busy, and while the waitstaff were attentive, it took over 3 hours for all of our food to come out. It was a nice place to sit and enjoy the food and time though. I came with friends and family to celebrate a birthday. At first, I was nervous about the fact that there were plenty of people not wearing masks, but I was relieved to see that they required a photo id and proof of vaccination for guests to enter. The restaurant was beautiful and the food was delicious. Even though there was a fixed menu and I was nervous about my allergies being taken care of, every course that had gluten and dairy was replaced by a substitute dish. I was amazed by how many dishes were served and how delicious everything was. The service was also quick and efficient. I'm hoping that I will have plenty more visits in the future. I first heard of Barbuto on New York Live, the NBC morning show segment, and recognized Jonathan Waxman who was also a guest judge on Masterchef! We were so lucky to see both Jonathan Waxman and Aaron Sanchez during our dinner on a random Thursday night in January -- seems to be a normal occurrence because they were completely unbothered (also probably a New York thing). Besides the celebrity sightings, the food was absolutely amazing! Barbuto is right next to the Hudson river (it's at the end of the block), easy to get to from the 2,3 train or a simple Uber up the West side. The ingredients were fresh, food came out warm. The only qualm I had was that the potatoes came out after the appetizers and entrees, almost 10 mins after the last entree came out. We didn't get to eat the potatoes with our entrees as a side, more like after we finished our entrees. But the up side is the potatoes were extra crunchy, barely any oil on them and incredibly well-seasoned, which is hard to come by. Also, we brought some home and reheated it in the air fryer and it tasted just as good as when they first arrived on our table! We ordered: -Pizza Salmone Affunicato (aka smoked salmon pizza with avocado and creme fraiche, $24) - my husband's favorite dish of the night. The crust is fluffy but the pizza is crisp -Insalata di Cavolo (Kale Salad, $17) -Strozapreti (seafood cream pasta, $27) - generous portions of crab and shrimp. A touch too salty IMO but overall one of my fav dishes of the night -Fettuccine al Castagna (Chestnut pasta with mushrooms, $26) - love the chestnut pasta, great reheated as leftovers! -JW potatoes ($10) Our bill was around $100 for two people before tax/tip for 5 items -- great quality and price for a high-end New York restaurant. Our first visit was an excellent experience. The industrial loft decor ambiance is only enhanced by the views out of the floor to ceiling windows of the Hudson River and the Hoboken cityscape. We were lucky enough to have as our server, the charming Matt, who only made our visit that much better. I chose as my cocktail the Pig On A Mission: Whistelpig 6-year rye, antique pelinkovac, aztec chocolate bitters. We started with mix of kalamata, castelvetrano and taggiasca olives. Next we had the Insalata Di Cavolo: kale, pecorino, breadcrumb, and anchovy vinaigrette. This was absolutely delicious, definitely in my top three salads ever and quite possibly the best ever. The kale was sliced thin and had been the recipient of a generous massage as it was as delicate as raw kale gets without being "baby" kale. The anchovy flavor was a subtle whisper, but yet present with each bite. The breadcrumb and pecorino served as almost a crumble on a fruit pie; it was that tasty. I will never not order the kale salad on any future visits. Our daughter selected the Jw Gnocchi, which came with sun-chokes, winter pesto, and parmesan. This was creamy with almost a hint of smokiness to the gnocchi; definitely worth reordering. My wife selected the Tagliatelle ai Funghi, featuring chantarelles, black trumpets, yellow foot's mushrooms. The tagliatelle was barely layered with a sublime mushroom "juice"; it was both subtle and comforting. I opted for the Strozzapreti with a Berkshire pork ragu. Imagine aldente pasta laced with juicy finely pulled pork, now imagine yourself with a bunch of tastebuds doing their happy dance. All this while looking out the floor to ceiling windows at the Hudson River and the lights of Hoboken in New Jersey. Our entrees let us full, but we had read too many positive reviews about the Torta Pistacchio, or the pistachio cake with lemon curd and topped with chopped pistachio. We split desert and were quite happy with our decision; it was perfectly moist and seriously delicious. It wasn't cheap, but very few places are in NYC. It was a very enjoyable meal and we are coming back. If it doesn't fall within your budget, perhaps consider it for a special occasion. If you don't drink alcohol, you can probably cut almost half of your cost. It is surely worth a visit. read more

We booked a reservation for Barbuto online via Resy. It was New Year's Eve weekend and the traffic from midtown was even more hectic on Jan 1st than I had expected. The Music Man performance on Broadway had just let out and it took forever to get an Uber. I called the hostess and she confirmed a late arrival was ok. She said, "I'll see you when you get here." I was not notified or asked about any restrictions or time limits on tables for being late. The Uber arrived and I received a text a half hour after. I confirmed and said, I'm on my way. The traffic was beyond bad and I had the car drop us off not too far away or so I thought. The walk was about 20 minutes longer. When I arrived, Sofia, the hostess, who knew we were running late, asked us to wait or have a drink at the bar. I didn't expect red carpet treatment, especially after being late. however, I did call and let her know that traffic was really bad. She could have explained their late policy if they had one or asked me to rebook for another time. She didn't do either. Instead, when we arrived after running down the streets of the west end, she greeted us with a haphazard smile and you'll need to wait. If the restaurant was full with a line out the door, I would understand the rationale behind her policing. But, Barbuto was half empty with plenty of tables available in the dining room --- there was no line out the door-- no VIPS waiting to get in. Since we ran over 10 blocks to get there, we were gonna eat! We worked for it. Sofia wasn't going to stop us. We took the invitation to sit at the bar and waited another 10 minutes to get served our drinks. What a night! I mean for a slow Sunday night, things were going nowhere and fast. From the hustle and bustle of Broadway's best and brightest to the dark gloomy dining Barbuto room. What a buzz kill on all levels. When we got a chance to order, after seeing hostess Sofia talk to every waiter and member of the team about the encounter I had just had with her at her post (like I said, what an ambiance), our food arrived burnt and cold. The manager who was bartending and wearing multiple hats for a slow night, hard work noted, took the pizza off the check. We didn't want anything taken off the check, we wanted to be treated with courtesy and understanding. If there was a policy about late arrivals, then it should have been explained when I called. Treating tourists (daughter of 1940s Village native) on New Year's Day with a bad attitude and rude service is not only a bad omen for the start of the year but it's a reflection of your brand. Service was impeccable, with rarely empty water glasses and a clearly dedicated server who took pride in his job. I would say it has become a rarity to get service like this anymore, so it was greatly appreciated. I started with the calamari salad and the smoked salmon pizza. This was probably enough for a meal on its own! Portion sizes were generous. I thoroughly enjoyed the salad - I liked the smoked salmon enough but came away thinking in the pizza format it just didn't fit. The next portion served was gnocchi and Capone. Barbuto sits along the West Side Highway around the corner from the Meatpacking District in an expansive industrial space that's always bustling with people come dinnertime. Barbuto focuses on good Italian dishes, but there are a few that are classics for the establishment, including their kale salad and their half chicken. Both are solid--the anchovy vinaigrette with the kale salad has great bite without being overly salty, while the chicken is juicy and lifted by the herbaceous and acidic salsa verde. I wouldn't say the food here is anything to call home about, but I would come back solely for their pistachio cake. Extremely moist with a great lemon curd and perfect crunch from the raw pistachios topped with powdered sugar, it is always a lovely close to a meal. Also would come back for their focaccia bread--super light and fluffy, I could eat this all day. Nice space but I thought the service was weird and pushy. I got the calamari salad and it was so soggy and overly salty. Food also took a while to come out. read more
